S u m m a r y

Theethnic map of a part of Old Serbia at a scale of 1:300.000refers to a part

of the historic Old Serbia, particularly Kosovo and Metohia, with the addition of theKurumlija nahiya(district). It is based on three volumes of traveloguesby Milo S.Milojevi, who traveled through this area in the 19th century - at the end of 1860sand the beginning of 1870s. The map clearly shows the ethnic picture at that time bynational and religious affiliation, through the composition and distribution of the

population by settlements. It also shows the demographic-statistical structure ofSerbs and Albanians immediately prior to the Serbian-Turkish wars of 1876 and

1877/78, at a time when the Serbs were still the majority population in the area ofKosovo and Metohia, and the Albanians a minority.

Beside the direct effect of revisiting the ethnic-demographic situation in thatpart of Serbia from almost 150 years ago, this map also verifies and reemphasizesthe originality, straightforwardness, synchronicity, richness, complexity, multidi-mensionalism and other values of Milojevi's travelogue, which has been somewhatunfairly neglected and even contested in our historiography. This paper represents aninterpretation of the results of the author's cartographic work.
