Q: How do I make a comprehensive finite

element analysis on nozzles I design with

    COMPRESS?

    A: Ctrl + Click

    FEA-Nozzlescalculates and reports

Stress The actual stress developed on the nozzle and in the shell as aresult of internal pressure and applied loads for various load cases.

Stress Intensification Factors (SIFs) FEA calculated stress divided by

stress calculated by ordinary methods yields this factor which is useful inpredicting stress in other load cases. The pipe stress analysts want thisnumber.

Code compliance Do the developed stresses exceed those permitted bythe Code?

Allowable operating, expansion, sustained loads These are the maxi-

mum loads which can be applied to the nozzle.

Fatigue stresses Repeated pressure cycles can cause a nozzle to fail. You can input your own cyclic history or use a Code default.

MAWP This MAWP calculated numerically finds that pressure which will

bring the nozzle to the maximum allowable stress.

Stiffnesses This determines how the nozzle will react to an applied

piping or other load. ASME VIII Div 2 primary stresses and allowables In Div 2 you can

consider secondary, temporary, and peak stresses, not defined in Div 1.

    FEA-Nozzlesa module in COMPRESS

FEA-Nozzlesis a module of FEPipe, the excellent finite element analysis programfrom Paulin Research. FEA-Nozzles receives a data set from COMPRESS and in

about ten minutes generates a complete finite element analysis.

It cant get any easier than that. Once you havedesigned a nozzle in COMPRESS and specifiedany applied loads you are one click away from FEA.

The reports from FEA-Nozzles are extensive and compre-hensive. These reports are stored in HTML files and are

accompanied with bitmap plots of stresses and displace-ments. They are included as a part of the COMPRESS

    report.

FEA-Nozzles automatically meshes the model and checksthe mesh to confirm that it will give a satisfactory solution.

The objective in writing this program has been to make itas automatic as possible. You do not have the flexibility to

adjust parameters as in FEPipe, but you do have incredibleease of use. If you also have FEPipe you can retrieve thefile generated by FEA-Nozzles and make adjustments.

The above calculations have practical value because

FEA-Nozzles offers an alternative to WRC-107 and WRC-297.

Large nozzles can be analyzed, not depending on Appendix1-7band U2-g.

Nozzles on knuckles can be analyzed.

Nozzles on cones can be analyzed.

True MAWP can be calculated, not depending on Code rules. Anozzle inadequate by Code rules may sometimes be shown byanalysis to be acceptable.

Effects of fatigue can be analyzed to predict useful life.

With stiffness you can use your favorite pipe stress program tomore accurately design a piping connection to the vessel.

FEA-Nozzles can pay for itself the first time it isused. Go figure that return on investment!
