We are having a Valentine’s Day fundraiser for Mission to Mexico. Tickets are being pre-sold after each service for $15 or can be purchased for $20 at the door. You have a choice of stuffed pork loin or fish and chips for dinner. Childcare will be provided and youth will be serving.

We will be taking song requests for the dance. You may do so at the time of purchasing your ticket or place your song selection on the bulletin board near the Chapel.

All are welcome: singles, couples and groups. Come support those going on Mission to Mexico by enjoying a delightful evening of tasty food and fun dancing!

Bites of Bread from Bob Do you have anyone in your neighborhood who still has their Christmas lights up? As I write this (on January 22 as I will be out of town when this Church Scroll is published), the garland and lights are still up in our Fellowship Hall. My neighbor was outside the morning after Christmas taking his lights down.

How long should Christmas lights stay up? Some say until New Years Day. Others say until Epiphany (Twelve Days after Christmas). Still others would say until they get around to it. Some refer to those who continue to leave their Christmas lights up into February and beyond as Christmas stragglers.

Personally, I hate to see all the Christmas decorations put back in their boxes and stuffed away into storage. Our homes and the church look so bare after the decorations are gone. I think we should be Christmas stragglers....slow to put away that Christmas spirit of love, joy, peace, hope and generosity.

Jesus is the light of the world, but he also called us to be the light of the world. Charities depend on the generosity of Christmas to maintain their ministries. Some family and friends only make contact (even if it is just a card) at Christmas. At our house it seems that as soon as we have put all the Christmas storage boxes up in the attic, we inevitably find several items that we forgot to include.

Maybe there should always be some straggling elements of Christmas left around to remind us of Jesus, the light of the world, and our mission to reflect that light.

Chapel Stained Glass On the back cover of the most recent pictorial direc-tory you will find a picture of the stained glass win-dow located in the Chapel of the church. According

to information found in the 150th Anniversary Book, complied by Hank Arends, “This window is the only part of the old Frame Church incorporated into the present building.” The inscription on the window states: “IN MEMORY OF OUR MOTHER, MRS. ELIZA WALLACE .”

On January 12, 2014, Tom Kay came to worship with us. I noticed Tom in the Chapel and asked him if Eliza Wallace was a relative. The window was pur-chased by his maternal grandmother in the memory of her mother, Eliza Wallace.

In the summer of 2013 this window was restored by Gary Swanson of Mill City, OR. Additional lighting was added behind the window. What joy to know the story of this wonderful focal point in the Chapel.

就秃了。我想我们应该做圣诞节的掉落，

慢慢储存圣诞节爱、欢乐、和平、希望和

慷慨的灵。

Super Bowl Party Fun! We had a wonderful time and turnout for the Super Bowl party. We had around 55 people at the party enjoying and fellowshipping together. Thank you to everyone that attended and made this such a great event.

A special Thank you” to Arty Day for helping with the wonderful food everyone brought. Another special “Thank you” goes out to the adorable little girls (Elizabeth Hirsch, Thalia and Kinzie Lazarus) who performed during half-time. I think the girls stole the show!!!

The winner of the gift certificate was Samantha Gorman. She had a perfect score on the question-naire, followed closely by Becky Johnson who missed only one.

For a first-time event, this was such a blessing and success. This may turn into an annual event.

Children and Youth A Little Light from Laurie “He has told you, Oh man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God.” (New American Standard Open Bible)

Micah 6:8 was the verse we learned on Sunday. Presenting the children with various unfair rules based on color of eyes, height, or whether they were wearing zippers or buttons, I asked them to decide if the rules were “just” and “kind.” Even though the idea that those wearing zippers get to have sundaes every day was kind of cool, whereas those with but-tons only get spinach, they agreed it wasn’t very fair. Actually, they didn’t think any of the so-called rules were very fair because they were based on physical attributes. As we discussed other ways people are treated unfairly, I discovered your children have a very keen sense of justice and kindness. You should be proud.

This lesson is part of a series of lessons on caring for others. Last week we read Matthew 25:34-40 where Jesus talks about the sheep and goats. We discussed ways to be “sheep”: to see Jesus in others and to help the “least of these.” At the end of that lesson, the group decided to donate snacks to our Helping Hands cupboard. (Parents, there will be a letter sent home about this.)

While preparing for these lessons, I was struck by some thoughts: as a child, when I learned that God made Adam in his image, I just thought it was Adam but have since realized that we are all made in His image. With that in mind, I ended our lesson with these thoughts and challenges: “Imagine, if you are arguing with your sister or brother and you picture them as Jesus, how will that change your heart?” “Imagine if you see that homeless person, and you think of them as made in God’s image, how will that change your heart?” We are all precious in His sight.

Ramblings from Riane As a youth group, we began a series on the Life of Jesus. The youth learned how Jesus was both human and divine during his time on Earth. We discussed how Jesus was tempted as a human, just as we are, but He was also God, so He never gave in to tempta-tion and never sinned. Students wrote letters to them-selves about what they already know about Jesus, how they feel about Him, and what questions they have about Him. They will receive their letters at the end of the series for discussion and reflection.

Thank you to everyone who brought calendars to the church for the youth to distribute to those with Alzheimer’s disease. With the leadership of Kim Resch, we went to the Brookstone Alzheimer’s Special Care Center where we mingled with patients. We shared our calendars, listened to stories, and prayed with Judy, a patient who was not feeling well. They loved our calendars and the youth that took the time to brighten their day. A little spread of God’s love goes a long way.

Have any plans for Valentine’s Day? Come to the Valentine’s Day Dinner and Dance in the Fellowship Hall on Friday, February 14! Doors open at 6:30 pm. This is a fundraiser for those going on Mission to Mexico during Spring Break. A delicious dinner will be served with your choice of Fish N’ Chips or Stuffed Pork Loin prepared by JD & Arty Day. Tick-ets are $15 and can be purchased at the Information Center. Bring the whole family for a fun, classy eve-ning. Childcare will be provided and youth of all ages will be serving. Come one, come all, and let’s have a ball!

An Evening in Tuscany Salem Pastoral Counseling Fundraiser Saturday, March 8 5:30 pm at Our Savior's Lutheran Church 1770 Baxter Rd SE

Proceeds from “An Evening in Tuscany,” the sixth annual benefit for the Client Assistance Program, help provide SPCC professional counseling for individuals, couples and families.

Appetizers, dessert and auction. Tickets: $25 per person until Saturday, March 1. $30 after March 1. $175 for a table of 8.

Friendship Day Quilt Circle The Quilt Circle would like donations of cotton or cotton/polyester material in any size for making quilts. Plain colors and kid prints especially needed. Lightweight polyester batting pieces of at least 1 yard would also be welcome. These items can be left in the CWF storage room in the northeast corner of the Fellowship Hall. Check It Out! A new book, “Kingdom Woman” by Tony Evans and his daughter, Chrystal Evans Hurst, has been placed in our Church Library because of Claire Widener’s kind work. Claire reviews books for the Pacific Northwest Association of Church Libraries and as a result the books are donated to our library.

In “Kingdom Woman” the authors explore the Pur-pose, Power and Possibilities revealed in a woman’s life as she seeks God’s will and is transformed by His Truth. In each chapter Dr. Evans presents a scriptural illustration of a prominent woman in the Bible and Chrystal offers an insight from her everyday life experience.

Claire suggests “Kingdom Woman” would be “especially valuable for young believers needing assurance and direction in their walk with God.” Find “Kingdom Woman” on the New Book Shelf in your Church Library.

Volunteer Opportunity – Van Driver HOME’s Youth Empowerment Program has an up-coming field trip. They are requesting a volunteer driver to drive the church van for their field trip.

Field trip information: Tuesday, March 25, from 12:00-4:00 pm The day will be centered on establishing a relation-ship with the local workforce and higher education. Exact itineraries are still being made, but activities such as tours of Don Pancho’s, Head Start, and Che-meketa Community College are in the works; perhaps a local restaurant as well. All sites would be local in Salem/Keizer.

If all youth attend as planned, we will have 13, in-cluding the chaperon.

This is a wonderful way to show at-risk teenagers someone cares. If you are interested in volunteering for this ministry or have questions, please contact Michelle Gorman at 503-363-9273 or 503-932-1840.
