Bites of Bread from Bob The Washington Post ran a story about a lady who was a housecleaner in White House for 24 years. Her name was Ema Daniel Grey. She died in 2009 at the age of 95. For 24 years, her job was to clean the Oval office. She cleaned more than just the Oval Office, but that was the big job. She retired in 1979 after working under six different presidents, starting in 1955. She was also a Christian. She would dust and vacuum and take out the trash in the Oval Office, but the last thing that she did at night before she turned off the lights and walked out of the room would be to go behind the president’s chair, put her arms on the back of it and pray: “Lord, bless the man who sits here, he is going to need your help. Please guide him and lead him. Bring good things in his life. Take care of him I pray.”

She said she did not vote for all of those people who occupied that office. Some of them did not support civil rights in the way that she thought they should have. Some of them, she did not vote for them when they came up for re-election. But she sought to care for every one of them. And to pray for them and to pray for good in their lives. At her funeral, the preacher said she was one who always saw the possi-bilities. And when she looked at those presidents she looked at what they could be, what they might be by the help of God.

In the next couple of weeks the Election process will be ramped up. Our mailboxes are filled with political material. TV and radio ad as well. Unfortunately, much of the material ends up being negative informa-tion about the other side of the issue or the politicians opponent. It is good for Christians to make well in-formed decisions in the voting process, but once the elections are behind us, we need to do like Ema Grey and stand behind our leaders in prayer.

Mark your calendars and shop the rummage sale; $5 for all you can put into a grocery bag with some priced items; jewelry, collectables, large items, small furniture. Yummy food along with pie and beverages will be available to purchase both days of the sale. Be sure to invite all your friends, family, and neighbors.

Time is running out if you have donations for the Rummage Sale, hurry and gather them up and bring them to the Fellowship Hall by November 2. Any large items can be donated from October 30 through November 3, they need to easily fit in the elevator and not be overly heavy. Please understand that the following items will not sell and are not wanted: televisions, computers/components, electronics over 4 years old, exercise machines, golf clubs and bags, skis, broken/soiled items, wire clothes hangers, glass jars, and book (hold for the book sale).

Women of CWF: your assistance in sorting rum-mage on Mondays and Thursdays from 9:00 am until noon is needed and appreciated. Please check your schedules and donate your time for the sale dates and times, we need help!

Proceeds from the Rummage Sale are used in support of Christian Women’s Fellowship (CWF) missions and projects. Bless each of you for your generous donations and support.

Condolences Catherine Hazelwood passed away on October 18. She will be greatly missed by her loved ones, friends and church family. Our heartfelt prayers and sympa-thies go out to her husband Lee; son and daughter-in-law Kent & Mary Lou Hazelwood; and the rest of her family.

Catherine’s memorial service will be November 2 at 3:00 pm in the Sanctuary. Thomas Meyer LaDuke passed away on August 28. Born in Salem to Tom & Jane LaDuke who were long-time members of Salem FCC. His sister is Yvonne LaDuke. Thomas loved Lake Tahoe, Crater Lake, fishing and golfing. Our sympathies and prayers go out to Yvonne and the rest of his family.

Congratulations upon Baptism On October 19 Kennedy Bigham, Ashlyn Bigham and TaMichael Scott were baptized. Kennedy and Ashlyn have been raised in this church and are the daughters of Scott & Robin and granddaughters of Wayne & Mary Ann Smith.

TaMichael has been a regularly attending our 9:30 am service for quite some time. TaMichael and his fiancee, DeeJay, plan on getting married this coming June.

A Warm Welcome Annie Kelley transferred her membership to Salem First Christian Church on October 12 at the 11:00 am service. Annie recently moved to the Salem area to be close to family. She comes from San Diego, CA were she was an active member of the Disciples of Christ Church.

Children and Youth A Little Light from Laurie Walking through the leaves the other day, I saw where someone had cleared them from the sidewalk, but some of the leaf impressions had been left behind. The sidewalk was very pretty with leftover leaf “shadows” stamped into the cement. As I thought about those impressions, the more I wondered what kind of impression we as a church will leave on our children.

When I was little, I remember going to a church with a particularly stern Sunday School teacher who criti-cized my prayer. Everything about that church was stale, stern and cold; a place where children were tolerated not embraced. Those people left a very negative impression in my young mind about church and I wanted nothing to do with it for many years. Being a shy child, I retreated even further inside my-self for fear of being judged and criticized instead of loved and nurtured.

As the Children’s Ministries Director, I am in a posi-tion to be that nurturing person who shares the love of Jesus with the children, and I love my job for that reason, but as they say, it does take a village. Jesus commissioned us to bring the children to him. That was not a message for one person, but a message to everyone. It is up to all of us to embrace our young ones so we can lay a positive foundation with which to build their faith on. Young families need support now more than ever. What can you do today to welcome our families and children and leave a good impression? If you open up to our children, their impressions will forever be stamped on your hearts!

ON THAT NOTE….. Please help at the HARVEST PARTY on OCTOBER 26. Many talents needed.

Also, JYF FAMILIES, please meet at the church this Saturday, October 25, at 11:00 am with a sack lunch, $5 and any extra $$ for snacks or other activi-ties at Bauman Farms. This is a FAMILY event.

Ramblings from Riane The youth had a great time at Bauman’s this week-end! The weather was beautiful and we enjoyed par-ticipating in activities, sampling apples, and enjoying some tasty treats!

Food for thought – “A person without self-control is like a city with bro-ken-down walls.” –Proverbs 25:28

We are constantly tempted on a daily bases in multi-ple ways. It is what we do with our temptation that matters. Each person has their own area where they struggle with self-control. For some it can be un-healthy eating habits or even letting something con-sume too much time which could be devoted to strengthening our relationship with God. I challenge you to join me in recognizing an area where personal self-control can be improved and develop a strategy where self-control triumphs over temptation. Recall-ing this verse and our commitment to honor God in all we do may help encourage us to practice self-control in certain areas of our lives.

Things to Know and Do Rebuilders’ Coast Field Trip All Are Welcome At the recent Rebuilders gathering we chose to have the October 28 gathering on the road to the beach. We will gather in the parking lot at 9:30 for a depar-ture to the Oregon beach.

Please sign up at the Information Center -- we are opening this adventure to any and all of the church.

Sign up -- bring a sack lunch -- a few dollars for gas reimbursement -- desire to spend time with each other AND "rebuilding" your relationship with the God of creation!

Giving Envelopes The dedicated Sunday Counters are requesting that regular givers who are not using the e-giving process, use offering envelopes to make the counting easier and more efficient.

What members may not know: loose checks not in an offering envelope, must be recorded on a separate page to provide an end-of-the-year total for each per-son or family. If your giving is in the form of cash and you do not use a numbered envelope, there is no way to provide a record of your giving.

New 2015 giving envelopes will be available in last December. There is an option of weekly or once-a-month envelopes. Call FCC Treasurer, Arty Day, at 503-581-1206, to add your name to the offering enve-lope list or drop a note in the offering trays.

CinderBlue in Concert Sunday, November 9 2:00 pm, Sanctuary

Our band will be finishing our second annual West Coast Tour and we are delighted to be back with an afternoon of gospel, blues, country and a bit of blue-grass music which is always family friendly. We call our style "Americana" because we don't fit into any one genre. Hopefully we will have something for everyone and we can share a fun afternoon together!

Best of all it is an honor for Jeff & Marlene Stevens, Rex Gatton and Steve Fine to perform in Steve & Marilyn Fine's home church! Put it on your calen-dars now! A free-will offering will be received at the concert.

Thanksgiving Special Offering This is your over and above gift that benefits the Col-leges, Universities, Seminaries, and Divinity Houses affiliated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). These learning communities are an extension of the church, challenging students to understand and respond to God’s call to serve. Your support pro-vides scholarships, church relations programs, and chaplaincy officers. A good example of someone currently benefiting from the Thanksgiving Offering is our own Zane Ridings.
