Tuesday Evening Prayer Service - 6:45 pm, Chapel Each week will have a different approach to prayer. Tuesday, March 19, we will have a contemplative prayer service - “a time of peace and prayer.” It will be a time of prayer in song, silence, listening and candlelight as we seek the presence and peace of God in our lives.

Sundays during Lent The focus is on the Spiritual Disciplines of Prayer and Meditation, Fasting, Simplicity, Solitude, and Service.

Palm Sunday - March 24 A grand celebration of Jesus’ entry into the city of Jerusalem.

Maundy Thursday Symbolic Seder Meal - March 28, 7:00 pm We will gather around the symbols of the Seder, the meal at which the Jewish people recall their deliverance from Egypt.

Bites of Bread from Bob In her psychology class one evening, Elaine took a personality test. When she arrived home, she eagerly told her husband about the test. He listened intently as she explained that she had learned why she had been such a procrastinator all her life. Bill asked, “So, does this mean you plan to quit putting things off?” “Well,” Elaine answered, “I’m certainly going to think about it.”

Too much thinking and not enough action is a problem associated with many of us. I often wonder what it is that I or this congregation could accomplish if good intentions produced great results. It makes me believe there would be no limits to what our congregation could accomplish for God in our community.

If good intentions produced great results we would not have enough space for all those who would be here on Sundays. It has been explained that over 80% of first-time visitors came to church on an invi-tation by family, friends or neighbors. Jim Blackwell has shared with me a statistic that says 82% of the people invited will come to church. That statistic is especially true around Christmas and Easter. Unfor-tunately, when it comes to extending that invitation,

procrastination too often takes over.

We are now just a little over three weeks away from Easter. Plan now for whom you would like to invite to join us for the celebration of the resurrection.

We will have all three worship services (at their usual times) each focused upon the joy of Easter. Below are 5 lines. Go ahead...right

March 10– Spiritual Discipline of Solitude/Silence. Our preacher on Sunday will be a surprise guest speaker who grew up at Salem First Christian Church.

March 17– Pastor Bob Hanna Spiritual Discipline of Service. Matthew 5:13-16 A recent study shows one of the best ways to pass on your values to your children is to be involved in a service project together. As we are involved in the ministry God calls us to do, it is one of God’s best ways of passing the values of God’s kingdom to us.

Fasting with a Difference Give up a meal and make a contribution. The cost of one meal, given to Marion-Polk Food Share, can make a meaningful difference to a hungry family in our community. Think of it. One meal, one dona-tion, from our tables to theirs. During the Lenten Season Salem First Christian is actively pursuing the practices known as Disciplines of the Spirit. Fasting is one of them. We invite you to consider this form of worship as we seek to grow together toward spiri-tual renewal.

Food items and cash donations for the Food Bank can be made during the week of March 10-17, followed with a dedication celebration during the March 17 worship service. Food barrels are in the church for collection convenience. Check the 10 Most Wanted Foods posters. Cash donations increase the dollar clout for the Food Bank, allowing bulk purchases from wholesale suppliers.

Members may also want to consider making a Sustainable Giving Pledge to Marion-Polk Food Share, in any dollar amount. Forms are attached to the bulletin board display.

Daffodil Mystery Solved Twice a day, Monday-Friday, I am guaranteed a smile walking by the daffodils coming up at the parking lot/alley entrance of the church. I wondered for weeks who this marvelous mystery daffodil planter was. I found out it is Paul Specht.

Thank you, Paul, for planting those daffodils that are bringing smiles to all who see them.

Baptism and Baby Dedication Kyle Ross was baptized during our 11:00 am service. Later in the service, Kyle and his wife, Katie, had a parent and child dedication for their daughter Chloe. In attendance was extended family and godparents.

Welcome Raymond Moya On March 3 Raymond came forward at the 11:00 am service to make a declaration of his faith in Jesus Christ. We are currently planning a date for his baptism. Raymond has been attending with his fiancée, Brandy Schippers. They plan on getting married at the church on August 3. Welcome, Raymond!

Service Sunday– April 7 On April 7 we will be taking part in our next Service Sunday. My team and I are actively planning the ser-vice projects we will have available for all of you to take part in. We are currently in conversation with Salem Interfaith Hospitality Network, and Marion- Polk Food Share for hands-on projects outside the church. We are also working with the CARA ministry team to see if any individuals we know about could use some hands to take care of yard work or other jobs around their home. Some of our music leaders are working on taking music out to a number of nurs-ing homes and care facilities. We will also have a hands-on project here at the church making a variety of greeting cards. Please keep a look out at the Infor-mation Center for sign-up sheets as well as the church website under Local and Global Missions.

For Children and YouthFor Children and YouthFor Children and YouthFor Children and Youth A Little Light from Laurie Many people think they have to have or do more in order to be happy. In our lesson this week, the kids and I talked about how more does not necessarily mean better, and instead of happiness, it often leads to emptiness. The Bible says we can’t worship two Gods; we can’t love things and love God. Filling our-selves with Jesus leads to true happiness. In Chil-dren’s Church, we practiced making our bodies still, stopping the head chatter, and breathing slowly so we can give God a chance to come in and hang out with us for a few minutes. I challenged the children to try that exercise every day and then tell me next week what they experienced. Last week the 3rd, 4th and 5th grade children went bowling for our monthly outing. It was fun watching them toss the balls down the lane willy-nilly then see-ing the balls bounce side to side. (We had bumpers up) Thank you to the adults who enjoyed this time with us: Mark Ridings, CJ Dyer, and Emily Snyder. The next JYF outing is April 20 to the Oregon Gar-dens. The 1st-5th grade children have been practicing with Christine Sinibaldi at 9:45 in order to sing with the choir and bell choir on Sunday, March 24, for Palm Sunday. On that day, all children are invited to help carry the palms down the aisle to begin our time of worship. Did you know some members of the congre-gation do not get to see many of our children and therefore believe we have very few in our church family? It’s a blessing to all when our children can minister to others by sharing in worship. Thank you, parents, for allowing your children to participate.

Flurries from Chris Each year I like to set aside at least one youth group meeting to experience prayer in a variety of ways. This past Sunday night was one of these experiences. It was a time for our youth to use most of their senses when entering into prayer. We had a total of seven activities for the youth to take on, as they wanted: 1) Simply sit on some pillows and rest and meditate. 2) Write a prayer to give to God on a piece of fabric and place it in the water. As the fabric sinks it begins to disintegrate and eventually disappears. 3) Use Play-doh to sculpt a prayer or manipulate the dough as we pray. 4) Use markers or crayons to draw a prayer on a piece of paper. 5) Use a writing implement to journal a prayer to God. 6) Write a short prayer on a small piece of paper and then attach it to a portable wall. 7) Walk through a labyrinth on the floor in the Fellow-ship Hall. As the youth made their way to the center, they were invited to think about things that they wished to give up to God. As they returned by the same path, they were asked what they were going to take on to continue to draw closer to God.

Many times we do not realize how much we are in need of the opportunity to slow down and be with God without any interruptions or distractions. If you look at the calendars of our youth you may agree that they need to slow down, but oftentimes we look at our own calendars filled up day after day and don’t realize that we, too, need to take time to slow down and be with God. I would encourage you to look at the list I have provided of ways to pray and try it out and see how it makes a difference in your life.

EasterEasterEasterEaster Preparing Easter Breakfast for Union Gospel Mission Easter is coming and we need your help to share God’s love and joy of the resurrection with Salem. We are recruiting volunteers and asking for donations for an Easter breakfast project at Union Gospel Mission. For the fourth year, we will provide breakfast for about 200 men and women on Easter morning. This year Easter Sun-day is on March 31. Last year was a great success, and this year is to be no different. Sign-ups and donations need to be received by March 24.

We need the following people for the following times (You are welcome to sign up for more than one slot.):

5:00 – 6:00 am Pancake Prep (5 people) 6:00 – 8:00 am Cooks and Food Prep (5 people) 6:20 – 8:10 am Room Servers (10 people) 7:00 – 8:30 am Dishwashers and Kitchen Help (4 people) 7:00 – 8:30 am Clean-Up Crew (6 people)

We need the following food items and/or money given by March 24:
