April 8 Easter Sunday Pastor Bob Hanna

Easter Sunday. Throughout Lent we have been using the Gospel of Mark to outline the last week of Jesus' life. The Easter story, in the Gospel of Mark ends with "They said nothing to anyone, because they were afraid (notation in NIV bibles: "The most reliable early manuscripts and other ancient witnesses do not have Mark 16:9-20). Even though Jesus was resurrected from the dead, they continued to live as if there was no resurrection. Do we really live like Christ has been resurrected?

April 15 Pastor Bob Hanna Numbers 13 The tax deadline in 2012 has been extended to April 17. If you have not yet filed your taxes, this sermon might be just for you...it is on procrastination. Throughout the scriptures we find that the message is to "choose this day". The scrip-tures give us many thoughts on how to overcome this common habit.

Bites of Bread from Bob In church, we often skip from Palm Sunday to Easter without spending enough time contemplating the meaning and the power of the cross. Speaking for myself, I enjoyed having time to spend a Sunday on each day of Holy Week and especially to be able to focus on the cross. Herschel H. Hobbs has written a poem titled, "The Sign of the Cross."

To many it is but an ornament to be worn about the neck.

To the architect it is a symbol, adorning churches.

To the scholar it is a goad, driving him on in intellectual pursuits.

To the preacher it is a sermon, filling the need of the hour--and of eternity.

To the skeptic it is a superstition, clouding men’s souls.

To the Roman it was an instrument of execution, obnoxious and hated.

To Constantine it was a sign in which to conquer, turning defeat into victory.

To Paul it was a symbol of glory, pointing he way to heaven.

To Mary is was a memory of agony, piercing her soul.

To the motley mob on Golgotha it was a holiday, carnal and cursed.

To one thief it was the door to perdition, horrible and eternal.

To the other it was the gate to Paradise, wondrous beyond work of men or angels.

To Christ it was a bier and a throne, paradox of time, predestined to eternity.

To multiplied millions of storm-tossed souls it is an anchor, offering a haven or rest.

For Children and YouthFor Children and YouthFor Children and YouthFor Children and Youth A Little Light from Laurie HAPPY EASTER! As a Sunday School teacher, my hope is that sometime in the past month and in the next few weeks, your children come home excited about Easter, in a new way: beyond eggs and bunnies. My prayer is that the children are excited about how much Jesus loves them and wants to be part of their lives and maybe even share what Jesus did for all of us because He thinks we are special.

Please take a moment with your children to pray for their teachers and to thank God for His dedicated servants. While you are praying, if God puts it on your heart to help your Sunday School teachers in some way, please let me know. We would like to give our teachers a Sunday off from teaching this month while parents or grandparents spend some time creating a gift of appreciation with the children. Please pray soon, angels are standing by.

Hugs of gratitude go to Joanna Brown, Kim Resch, Betty Charnholm, Nancy Stebbins, and Christine Sinibaldi for stepping in every week to teach your children. A ‘heavenly high-five’ goes to Billy Strehlow for portraying Jesus during our historical reenactment of the Last Supper. We are truly blessed to have such great teachers. Parents and teachers, it is important to fill out a background check for our records. Thank you to those who have already filled them out.

JYF (grades 3-5) Trip to the Oregon Garden is on Saturday, April 21. We will leave the church at 11:00 am, have lunch at the Dyer house in Silverton, then head to The Oregon Garden. Flurries from Chris Last Sunday I was blown away by a comment a youth made during Sunday School. At the beginning of class we begin with an activity designed to get everyone talking. This youth received the question: “What is better ice cream or cake? Why?” His response was ice cream, because you don’t need a special event in order to have ice cream, and you can eat it no matter what type of mood you are in. I thought about this, and it is true we typically wait till we have a reason to celebrate to have some cake.

Later on we were talking about the difference between when God tells us to do something and when the church asks us to help with something. Such as in John 21:15-19, Jesus is telling Peter that if he loves him then Peter is to feed, and tend his sheep, versus when the church asks for help with a Service Sunday. The instructions from God/Jesus are not a request while we perceive the petitions for help from the church as requests.

This train of thought led to one of the significant comments of the day. So often the church waits for a special event to do mission work and do it well. We should treat the mission work as ice cream instead of cake.

We should not wait for special occasions to take on mission projects, but rather look for what God is calling us to do here and now and go forth in service.

30 Hour Famine during Regional Assembly All Middle School students are invited to participate in a 30 Hour Famine at Albany First Christian church on May 18-20.

This will be a great opportunity to learn about hunger in the world and discover ways to make a dif-ference. For more information see the youth bulletin board or talk to Chris Snow.

Women’s Fashion Show Luncheon on Saturday, May 12, at 12:00 pm for all women of the church. The ticket cost is $6 per person.

Food, entertainment, and a special program highlight-ing Spring fashions as supplied by Christopher and Banks, a well-known purveyor of sprightly women’s clothing. Featuring our own First Christian Church models.

Check It Out! “The One Year Book of Hope” by Nancy Guthrie has been donated to your church Library by Ione Adolf.

This is a book not to be read in one sitting, but a book to be checked out repeatedly. Each chapter contains devotions, reflections and scripture for study on sub-jects such as death, forgiveness, waiting, suffering, comfort, joy and so forth.

Peruse the table of contents of its 52 subjects and check it out as needed. Find “The One Year Book of Hope” in the Prayer section of your library.

Liberty House Wish List Look for the flower pot with children’s cute photo flowers and paper leaves at church. The leaves describe items Liberty House needs to carry on its mission as a child abuse assessment center.

Pick a leaf and purchase the item. Fill in the your information on the leaf and return the item and the leaf to FCC. It’s like a giving tree.

The items need to be returned by Sunday, April 29, and we will dedicate the items at Service Sunday. Bless you all for helping Liberty House “where a child’s voice is heard.”

Service to Go Volunteers will be doing arts and crafts projects that benefit local non-profit agencies.

Union Gospel Mission Volunteers will be serving lunch to those in need.

CCTV Volunteers will be washing news vans for Salem’s only non-profit television station.

Wallace Marine Park The homeless residents will clean up the park and the FCC volunteers will collect the trash bags and deliver them to the dump.

SE Salem Neighborhood Garden Volunteers will help build benches so the garden has places for volunteers and gardeners to sit and relax.

A.C. Gilbert’s Discovery Village Pressure washing and basic maintenance.

Tierra Rose Senior Living Community Volunteers will be visiting with residents and making holiday cards with them.
