April Is the Month When “Nendo” Starts in Japan

◆A Year in a Japanese school

In Japan, the new “nendo” starts from April. “Nendo” means one business year starting from April to March. Students go on to the next grade, and many people also change their workplaces. In this article, we introduce the schedule of one year of public schools in Japan. Most Japanese schools have three terms. The first term is from April to the end of July. Then summer vacation is one month from the end of July to the end of August. The second term is from the end of August to the end of December. The third term is from the beginning of January to the end of March.

Entrance Examination for High School Some people may be starting school in Japan from this spring. Those who enter middle schools need to think about not only their everyday classes, but also which high schools to enter.

◆How to enter high school in Japan

In Japan, entrance exams are not required when going to public middle school. However, because Japanese compulsory education is until middle school, entrance exams are required to go on to the high school, both public and private. Taking the entrance exam for high schools is generally called “Koko-juken”. In their school classrooms, students may not feel the pressure of the high school entrance exam, even in 3rd grade. But in actuality, some students go to cram school to study for the entrance exam after school or club activities. Consultations start with teachers and guardians about which high school to attend. second term, students can choose the high school where they want to enter and visit the school. Applications for entrance exams start in the third term. In Osaka, the entrance exam of private schools is held in February and the entrance exam of public schools in March. The public high school entrance exam has special entrance criteria and/or considerations (the condition changes every year) for students who have returned from abroad or have international nationalities and need Japanese language support. Therefore, please consult with teachers or MAFGA as soon as possible if needed.

◆ The entrance exam information for international

residents Osaka Prefectural Board of Education provides information on high school entrance exam for international residents on their website in 11 languages (English, Chinese, Korean, Indonesian, Russian, Vietnamese, Portuguese, Spanish, Tagalog, Thai, easy Japanese). The website is http://www.pref.osaka.lg.jp/shochugakko/kikoku/. “Consultation about entering high school for children with international backgrounds” is held around the beginning of every November. Multilingual consultation with an interpreter can also be provided. For further information, please contact MAFGA. If you are feeling anxious about going to high school, please request the multilingual consultation service of MAFGA as soon as possible. MAFGA also has programs for children with international backgrounds to study, “SAPORUTO” and ”KODOMO MOTTO”.

in Osaka City. She graduated from that school and now is a student in the fourth year of Kansai Gaidai University. We interviewed her about Japanese school and her experience related to entrance exams for high school and university. (Interviewed by Natsuko Konishi-Attwood) -- Looking back on your school life in Japan, what did you want the people around you to do for you? I was surprised by how often we had Physical Education lessons at middle school in Japan while we had one lesson only once in few months in China. All students seemed to be very good at sports. had known what I had been learning at school in China, it would have been easier for me. -- Did you have anybody to talk to when you had problems? There was a volunteer group at Osaka University, which supported international students. The lead teacher in that group supported me. I always talked to him. I consulted with him about choosing high school and the exams too. -- How did you collect information about the entrance exams for high schools and universities? The lead teacher helped me for high school. He found the high school which allowed me take the entrance exam specially provided for students from abroad. I researched about universities by myself. -- Is there anything you would like Osaka Prefectural Board of Education or MAFGA to do for the students who are in the same circumstance? I would like them to inform international students about educational systems in Japan at an early stage. When I came to Japan, I was at the age which was supposed to be in the 2nd grade of middle school but I started from the 1st grade. That was because I couldn’t understand Japanese much. The people of the educational board and I discussed about it and decided to do so. However, if I had gone into the 2nd grade, I would have been eligible to take entrance exams for high schools in a special way as an international student. I found out about that later. I wished I had known that when deciding which grade which I would start in. -- Please give advice to overcome the school entrance exams for the children who came to Japan from abroad? If you would like to go on to university, you yourself have to try hard. There is something I also would like to tell children like me, who have parents who can’t understand Japanese. I think that it would be good idea to tell your parents about exams for entering schools in Japan, which school you would like to go and what the school life would be like as soon as possible. I was in the position between “the school and society” and “parent”, as their liaison. On top of that, I had to study for the exams. I had so much difficulty, both timewise and mentally. My mother was very worried with lots of things she didn’t understand then. My mother and I had lots of arguments over the entrance exams. Looking back, I should have explained to her earlier so she wouldn’t have had to worry so much. -- What is your plan after you graduate from your university, which is coming soon? I’m planning to go to a graduate school. I would like to study Japanese culture deeper making comparisons between Japan and China.

● Medical Expenses Subsidies Available to Eligible Minoh City Residents As the Osaka Prefecture modified their medical expense

subsidy programs on April 1, 2018, Minoh City’s

corresponding subsidy programs have been modified.

Minoh City residents (except those receiving welfare benefit)

who are enrolled in any type of public health insurances

and meeting any of the following criteria can apply for the

Minoh City’s subsidy covering a part of medical expenses

(their monthly co-pay burden will be up to a ceiling of ¥2,500

under Program (1) or (2) and ¥3,000 under Program (3) or (4)

below). Please contact the following Office for documentation

requirements or other qualification details, such as household

income threshold.

(1) The program for children’s medical care (except those

eligible for Program (2) or (3)):

-- Children aged 0 to 18 (until graduating from high school:

those born April 1 are eligible until March 31 in the year of

their 18th birthday)

(2) The program for single parent families’ medical care:

-- Children aged 0 to 18 (until graduating from high school:

those born April 1 are eligible until March 31 in the year of

their 18th birthday) of single parent families

-- Single parents (father or mother) who are raising such children

-- Others (including grandparents or relatives) who raise

such children

(3) The program for severely disabled people’s medical care:

Disabled people who are

-- Holders of a “Physical Disability Certificate (Shintai

Shogaisha Techo) Level 1 (or Level 2)”,

-- Holders of a “Rehabilitation Certificate (Ryoiku Techo) A”,

-- Holders of both a “Rehabilitation Certificate B1” and a

“Physical Disability Certificate” (any level is ok).

-- Holders of a “Certificate of the Mentally Disabled

(Seishin Shogaisha Hokenfukushi Techo) Level 1”

-- Holders of a “Recipient Certificate for Designated

Intractable Disease (Specific Disease) Treatment (Shitei

Nambyo (Tokutei Shikkan) Jukyushasho)” who are eligible

for “Disability Pension (Shogai Nenkin) Level 1” or “Special

Child-rearing Allowance (Tokubetsu Jido Fuyo Teate) Level 1”.

(4) Program for old-adults’ medical care:

This program was abolished but elderly people who were

qualified this program as of March 31, 2018 will continue

to receive the benefit until March 31, 2021. (Elderly people

who are eligible for Program (3) are to receive the benefit

●Notice for the Payment of the Nursing Care

Insurance Premium If you are receiving the national pension for the first time from April 2018, the payment of the nursing care insurance premium will be automatically deducted from your pension benefits. How to Dispose Raw Garbage ＆ Keep Crows

Away The food that crows like most is the raw garbage that we

throw away. A crow finds raw garbage and calls a flock of

crows in a loud voice. And more crows gather for the raw

garbage. In order not to attract crows, it is very important

to take precautions when disposing of raw garbage.

Crows’ breeding season is from April to June. In this

season, crows are always looking for food like raw

garbage to breed their babies. Please make sure to follow

3 rules below. Please take special care from April to June.

(1) Follow the date & time of the collection day!

Don’t put out garbage before the collection day.

(2) Wrap the garbage with a net and put a weight on it!

When putting out garbage, cover the garbage bags with a

net and tuck the end of the net into under the garbage.

Place weights on top to prevent crows from taking it away.

(3) Clean up immediately!

Clean up immediately if the garbage has become

scattered. If left as is, a lot of crows will rapidly gather.

Don’t drive away crows with a stick and so on because

crows may attack humans. Crows hate strong light. It is

possible to drive away crows by shining light on them with

a mirror or a flashlight.

●Big Earthquake! A “Yellow Handkerchief”

(Yellow Cloth) to Inform “Our Family Is All Right!”

In Minoh City, “yellow handkerchiefs” are used to quickly confirm if residents are safe. Please put up a “yellow handkerchief” (a big eye-catching yellow cloth or towel) in front of your house, at the entrance for instance, if everyone in your family at home is safe without injury after a big earthquake. It informs neighbors, “Our family is all right!” at the time of disasters such as earthquakes. If there are no “yellow handkerchiefs”, persons in charge of

the safety confirmation of the resident association have to visit all houses, meet the residents and ask if they are safe. This takes a lot of time. If we use “yellow handkerchiefs”, persons in charge can confirm the safety of the resident quickly
