Stay the course with the 7FDM engine

7FDM engines from GE are designed to power workboats, tugs, towboats, offshore supply vessels, ferries, dredges, fishing vessels and other marine transport applications. Dependable and durable, these medium-speed engines are among the best in their class for fuel efficiency and low life cycle costs. Engines areavailable in 8-cylinder, 12-cylinder and 16-cylinder designs.

The right supportright when you need itWith more than 18,000 medium-speed diesel engines

in service worldwide, its critical we have the parts andservice to support them. And we dothrough a networkof parts distribution centers and service representativesavailable 24/7 around the globe. Were a leader in theon-time delivery of parts and services.

GE has been designing and building high-performance diesel engines for more than 30 years.Today, were one of the worlds leading manufacturers of engines for medium-speed duty from

1,400 to 4,100 continuous horsepower. With exceptional reliability and the lowest operatingcosts in its class, the 7FDM engine from GE is the right choice for dependable, efficient power.

It works harder. The 7FDM is a high-compression, four-stroke, medium-speed, turbocharged, electronic fuel injection-equipped,class-approved engine designed and built for rigorous marine applications. The GE medium-speed engine isproven reliable, with over 150 million hours of service. It is also among the most fuel-efficient engines in its class.

It goes longer. With rugged construction and quality-assured parts, the 7FDM engine will operate cost-effectively for more than20 years. Most components can go without overhaul for up to 40,000 hours of typical marine duty cycles in

the most demanding environments. Among medium-speed engines on the market, the 7FDM offers one ofthe lowest life cycle costs.

It runs smarter.A high-capacity turbocharger, electronic fuel injection and efficient combustion management combine tomake the 7FDMs fuel and lube oil consumption as well as its emissions among the lowest in the industry. The 7FDM complies with MARPOL Annex VI, U.S. EPA Marine Tier I and ECU standards and is capable ofmeeting EPA Marine Tier II standards as well.

The easy-to-maintain engineModularized construction of the 7FDM engine makes iteasier to maintain than engines of the past. Among themaintenance-friendly features of the 7FDM are largeaccess doors on the engine mainframe to reach bearingsand other crankcase components. The segmented cam-shaft, sectional exhaust manifold and unitized powerassembly are features that simplify removal and replace-

    ment of components.

7FDM componentsDesigned for high reliability and low life cycle costs

    Rigid Cast Mainframe

The 7FDM mainframe featureshigh-strength, monobloc, nodularcast-iron construction. All water, fuel and exhaust piping is externallymounted, eliminating the potential forinternal contamination. Large accessdoors allow for easier maintenance, and generous casing and ribbedcross-members dampen vibration.

    High-Performance Turbocharger

GE expertise in gas turbine technol-ogy contributes to an industry-leadingdesign for performance in the 7FDMsturbocharger. A high compressionratio improves efficiency across theload range. Dual modular pulse pipingpreserves exhaust pulse energy formaximal thermal efficiency, and thestainless dual exhaust pipe exhibitslong component life.

The low-emissions solutionProven EFI technology, integrated with GEs PowerStarengine control module, makes the 7FDM the naturalchoice for environmental compliance. Without exhaustgas treatment, NOx emissions from the 7FDM engineare below MARPOL Annex VI regulatory standards. Theengine complies with U.S. EPA Marine Tier 1 and ECUstandards as well.

    Heavy-Duty Crankshaft

The engines one-piece crankshaft isforged from high-quality steel, nitride-hardened for long life. Hefty journalsand crank pins minimize surface loads, and large radii fillet welded counter-weights reduce stress for longercrankshaft life.

    Segmented Camshaft

The camshaft in the 7FDM engine isarranged in individual sections foreasy inspection and maintenance.Forged and hardened cam andjournals promote reduced wear.Oversized end bearings decreaseloads for longer camshaft life.

    Unitized Power Assembly

Four-stud mounting makes assemblyremoval fast and easy. Electron-beamwelding of the steel liner to the forgedhead prevents leakage. Stainless steelvalve seats, inconel exhaust, chromedintake valves and valve rotators extendoverhaul intervals and component life.

    High-Strength Pistons

Forged steel crowns with oil splashcooling promote heat reduction forlonger life. A three-ring arrangement, distributing pressure more evenly, anda cut-back design decrease lube oilconsumption. A lightweight aluminumskirt offers high heat resistance. Themaster and articulated rod sharea common journal, minimizingengine length.

    Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI)

    Our EFI systems ensure compliance

to all major regulatory standards.Precise fuel management and controlalso yields fuel savings. The reliabilityand performance of electronic fuelinjection technologies from GE havebeen proven with more than 150million hours of engine service overthe past decade.

    Tolerant Tri-Metal Main Bearings

The main bearings are oversized to

reduce pressure while providingexceptional oil-wedge formation forlow wear. A sacrificial run in overlaypromotes rapid conformity at start-up.A nickel barrier ensures superior heatresistance, while a lead tin overlayserves as a high-tolerance contami-nant trap for particles and degraded oil.
