PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE BESKJED FRA PRESIDENTEN
Gree8ngs fellow members and friends –
Here’s hoping that everyone had a great Christmas with family and friends and that 2015 will be a healthy and produc8ve year filled with numerous blessings. It seems like yesterday when we welcomed the new century but I think we can all agree the years since have been filled with unique 8mes. From our lodge perspec8ve, we have grown and are the largest lodge in Florida and we have had significant achievements from both a Sons of Norway and community perspec8ve including our hos8ng the 2014 Interna8onal Conven8on.
So we are ready to plan another lodge year – our 41st. Our focus the past two years has been the SON Conven8on, so 2015 will be a year to think differently about our lodge goals. We always want and welcome new members and we’ve been blessed in maintaining an even flow. But we need new ideas for programs, cultural ac8vi8es and community service during 2015. To that end we will hold a Strategic Planning session Saturday, Jan. 10 that is open to ALL members. These ideas must come from our lodge members as to what makes them want to con8nue membership and aWend mee8ngs. We also have to think of ways to bring children into our lodge ac8vi8es.
Our Jul Fest Dec. 7 held at the Omni Hotel, our partner in hos8ng the successful Interna8onal Conven8on, included great food and service and holiday tunes performed by our own Bonnie Hardman. The visit from Santa is always a hit, but the Santa Lucia procession was terrific. Thanks to CharloWe Fluker for coordina8ng and to the children for par8cipa8ng. And thanks to our Santa Bill Large.
On behalf of our membership I want to applaud our steadfast “boat boys” and other volunteers who decorated Helga for presenta8on as a Viking Warship in two area Light Parades and then par8cipated as rowers. Decora8ng Helga is very 8me consuming, but it gives Sons of Norway tremendous visibility in these parades. You may have seen Helga’s photo in the Sunday, Nov. 27 Florida Times Union, the only boat to be featured in the FTU. We par8cipated in the Julington Creek Light Parade Dec. 6. Special thanks to our Sports Director Eugene Yerkes and Stewart Svendsen for untold volunteer hours for the boats. I also want to thank Eric Nord for housing our two boats in his business warehouse for an extended 8me where they are decorated. Our lodge has been very fortunate to have our boat enthusiasts who for many years have handled our very robust boat program.
Welcome Tom and Jean Amundsen as well as the Tod and Carol Knutson family as new members. We look forward to having you as part of our Sons of Norway family. And we look forward to having a great 2015 where we celebrate our members and our Nordic culture which is paramount to our organiza8on.
Kent M. Larson, President Gateway to Florida Lodge 3-‐541
As we bid farewell to the Old Year, Let's welcome in the New, With hopeful expecta8ons and an op8mis8c view.
Let's put the past behind us and concentrate instead – On a promise of a future with beWer 8mes ahead.
Let's think of each new morning as star8ng of the day That we can make rewarding in some very special way.
Let's put some laughter in our lives, Revive a dream or two. Have faith that if we try enough, there’s nothing we can't do.

Lodge members aWended the Empty Bowls Charity lunch: Sharon White, Rita Tweed, Judy Silvey, Anna-‐Rita Perkins, Evelyn & Pete Hopkins.
One out of every 6 adults and 1 out of every 4 children in North Florida are hungry or food insecure. The Empty Bowls Luncheon is an effort to help the hungry popula8on through the Nourishment Network. At this year's 30th annual lunch Mayor Alvin Brown spoke and students from Jacksonville Country Day School performed a song highligh8ng the "We Nourish Hope" mission.
The Nov. 18 event was sponsored by Winn-‐Dixie, featured a light lunch, live music from student performers and a short program about local hunger. Our SON Lodge donates $300.00 a year to sponsor a table for 10 people to aWend the 30th annual Empty Bowls Luncheon, a fundraiser for the Nourishment Network food bank. It is a charitable func8on for our lodge and also helps the hungry popula8on here in North Florida. Un8l you aWend, you do not realize how many people are going hungry in Jacksonville. It has been a privilege for me to go for the past 4 years. Anna-‐Rite Perkins Judy Silvey, Sharon White, Rita Morrison and Pete Hopkins aWended this year and some other members have been there in previous years, too. We have room for more. We get to select a bowl that has been handcraoed by students. Please come with us next year.

HELGA IN LIGHTED BOAT PARADES by Eugene Yerkes, Sports Director
This year we decided to par8cipate in two lighted boat parades: the City of Jacksonville parade (Nov 28) and the Julington Creek parade (Dec. 5). Our entry was Helga the Viking Long Boat. We began by having a number of work sessions at BFE (an industrial warehouse owned by Eric Nord) to check the lights on the oars, dragon head and tail, sides, shields and sail. We were lucky that only a few of the lights had to be replaced. Helga (Eric Nord’s 30 foot pontoon boat) was being stored at the Lakeshore Dry Storage on the Ortega River in West Jacksonville. Therefore, we transported our lights to Lakeshore to install them on Helga. This was an outside loca8on and the north wind made the installa8on process a cold effort. One of the major problems was getng our generator to start. We finally had to rebuild the carburetor. This one generator powers the over 20,000 LED lights that we had on Helga. It take a lot of wiring to connect the lights to the generator.
We also used black lights to illuminate the 14 rowers so the viewers could see them. The crew wore florescent smocks and Viking helmets with flash lights in the horns.
The final assembly of Helga was completed at the Jacksonville Metro Park Marina in the St. John’s River adjacent to the Jaguar stadium. Helga was manned by Captain Eric Nord, Santa Claus (Kent Larson) and 14 rowers: Rich Brew, Eugene Yerkes, Tod Knudson, Franklin Morrison III, Frank Morrison II, Eric, Ian Pate, David Fluker, Stewart Svendsen, Chris8an, George Sarkese, Rita Tweed, Bonnie Hardman, and Marci Larson. Other riders included Ruth Morrison, Katrina Fluker and Po Chu Svendsen. Before the parade, we had a meal of Sloppy Joe’s prepared by Kent Larson and Hagar beer. The parade was successful with two loops performed in front of the Jacksonville Landing and the judges. All rowers pretending to row were in unison and the oar salutes were impressive.
Aoer the parade, the party for all boat crews included food and beverages. Approximately 70 boats par8cipated. Helga did not win a prize, but was considered to be the “crowd choice” for the favorite lighted boat. Helga was the only lighted boat to have its picture featured in the Jacksonville Times-‐Union newspaper.
The Julington Creek Lighted Boat Parade was similar to the Jacksonville parade. The major difference was that we had to shorten the mast to get the sail under the Julington Creek/San Jose Bridge. Many of the houses along the creek had dock par8es and saluted us with fireworks. The residents of Westminster Woods Re8rement Home loved when Helga gave them an oar salute. During the parade the night air was cool and the waters calm.
I would like to thank Eric Nord for allowing us to use his warehouse and pontoon boat as well as everyone else who helped make this event successful. It was great fun and our Sons of Norway Lodge got some good publicity.

SONS OF NORWAY CELEBRATES FOUNDER’S DAY
January 14 marks Founders Day within Sons of Norway; It was on this day in 1895 that 18 Norwegian Immigrants came together to form a mutual assistance organiza8on that would one day become an interna8onal organiza8on. Prac8cal, cau8ous, and driven to find solu8ons to the financial problems many Norwegian-‐American families faced, the founders looked to their homeland for answers. Several of them had lived in Trondheim, where for a small weekly fee, members and their families acquired free medical care. Borrowing from that plan, the men designed a mutual assistance organiza8on to provide members with security against financial crisis, a forum to celebrate Norwegian-‐American na8onalism, and a means to preserve the treasured literature, music, art, foods and customs of Norway. The founding charter describes the founda8on of Sons of Norway and also provides a glimpse of what Norwegian newcomers strove for in America at the turn of the 20th century: This corpora8on is organized upon fraternal principles, for the purpose of crea8ng and preserving interest in the Norwegian language by its members insofar as compa8ble with the loyalty they owe the United States of America, to labor for the development, enlightenment and progress that conduce to honest ci8zenship, in order that the Norwegian people in their country may be properly recognized and respected; to aid its members and their families in case of sickness and death, by according them financial assistance of such magnitude and upon such condi8ons, as may be determined by its bylaws. Over the next 15 years the organiza8on grew, first within Minnesota and then the West Coast of the United States (Washington State). In the 120 years since its founding, Sons of Norway has grown into a Fraternal Life Insurance company serving more than 60,000 members in nearly 400 lodges throughout North America and Norway. In celebra8on of our Founders’ Day, all members are encouraged to wear their membership pins and any Sons of Norway clothing items you have. This is a day to celebrate your membership, so be sure to tell your friends and family about Sons of Norway and all the great things its doing in your community. Then, be sure to share your Founders’ Day stories with Sons of Norway on Facebook at: facebook.com/groups/sonsofnorway
