The Greater China Scholars program is a key part of the University of Notre Dame’s expanding commitment to internationalization, which includes developing international partnerships, supporting faculty research, and providing students with unparalleled learning experiences, both on the Notre Dame campus and internationally. Like other peer universities with an international reputation, the University of Notre Dame attracts potential undergraduate students from around the world who have already demonstrated the highest caliber of academic excellence. But while success in the classroom is critical, it is not the only criterion for admission to the University. Notre Dame looks for students who also will contribute to the University community with their strength of character, capacity for leadership, and commitment to the common good. Through the Greater China Scholars program, the University is able to identify and provide support to high-achieving and hard-working students who, building on these core attributes and competencies, can most benefit from the unique Notre Dame experience. As students, these young scholars are immersed in the University’s academic and residential life. In countless ways, they enrich the campus community by sharing their experiences, perspectives, and ideas. After graduation, they continue to engage with the Notre Dame family as members of our international alumni network. They also go on to distinguish themselves in the community more broadly as civic and business leaders.

I am genuinely proud to witness the many ways in which this program helps the Greater China Scholars and the entire University, my own alma mater, to flourish.

The University of Notre Dame was founded in 1842 as a result of Rev. Edward Sorin’s journey from France to the American Midwest. Establishing a place of higher learning in a foreign land required strong conviction and a bold vision. As it grew, Notre Dame soon became a beacon of higher learning for Catholic immigrants and their children. Rev. John I. Jenkins, the University’s 17th president, is boldly advancing the vision of Notre Dame as a “powerful force to heal, unify, and enlighten our world.” The University can only make progress in fulfilling this mission through continued international engagement and exchange. The Greater China Scholarship (GCS) program was created to encourage exceptional students from throughout China to attend Notre Dame. The University not only aims to attract the region’s brightest, but also those who demonstrate global leadership and commitment to the betterment of society. The Greater China Scholarship Program is humbled to have received annual support from the Li Ka Shing Foundation and the HS Chau Foundation. In addition, many alumni and parents of Notre Dame students have also contributed to the scholarship program. We are humbled by both the excellence of the scholarship applicants and the generosity of the Notre Dame community. I would like to briefly highlight a few vital statistics on our program’s success:

• The number of applicants from Greater China has increased from 220 in 2010 (prior to the scholarship program) to 630 in 2016.

• In 2011, 20 finalists were selected from a pool of 371 applicants. The median SAT score for finalists was 1465. In 2016, 20 finalists were selected from a pool of 630. Their median SAT score was 1550.

• Scholarship finalists are among the most competitive students to apply to Notre Dame from Greater China. Over the six-year period, 58 of the 118 finalists have chosen to enroll at Notre Dame.

• The scholarship recipients are from 19 cities in China, representing significant geographic and economic diversity.

• Among the cohort of currently enrolled Greater China Scholars, 80% have achieved a grade point average (GPA) of 3.5 and above. The eight full scholarship recipients received a median grade point average (GPA) of 3.91.

• The program has already committed over US$ 2.6 million in support of 45 students.

• Eight students have graduated from the Greater China Scholars Program. Two are pursuing graduate degrees at excellent universities, such as Harvard and MIT, and six are pursuing careers at organizations and corporations such as at the United Nations, Prophet, and Deloitte.

All Greater China Scholars receive a Summer Enrichment Award (SEA) to support their research, service, international study or internship experience for one summer. The awards enable Greater China Scholars to discover their interests, develop their passions, enhance their leadership potential, and strengthen their commitment for a better society.

Ce Liang, an international Economics and ACMS major, volunteered at the China-Dolls Center for Rare Disorders (CCRD) Beijing Office for two months in summer 2016. She provided services for children with Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) and conducted an independent research on the living conditions of those with rare disorders.

“I started the service after I finished my first theology course at Notre Dame, and what I learned in class—suffering, human vocation, and the concept of love and death—helped me get through some experiences. This program brought a vivid demonstration of these concepts and greatly helped my spiritual growth.”

Yilong Yang, a junior physics major conducted research at the Nuclear Science Laboratory with Professor Umesh Garg and his group during the summer of 2016. He worked on extracting the centroid energy of the compressional mode giant resonances by performing multipole decomposition analysis (MDA) in order to better constrain the nuclear incompressibility, a key parameter governing the equation of state (EOS) for infinite nuclear matter.

Yi Lok Tsang, a junior in Philosophy and Economics, conducted philosophical research at the Notre Dame London Global Gateway last summer. She was mentored by Prof. Christopher Shields, George N. Shuster Professor of Philosophy. The research surveyed the similarities between Aristotelian virtue ethics and Confucian ethics, including Eudaimonia and Dao, Virtue and De, Zhongyong and the Aristotelian Mean, and the metaphysical importance in the ethics of Aristotle and Confucius.

物理专业大三学生杨熠龙于2016年暑假期间在核子物理实验室跟随优

曼什·加戈教授及他的团队围绕核巨振（GR）开展研究工作。在这期

间，他致力于通过多级分解分析（MDA）的方法提取特定核巨振模式

的中央能量级，从而更精确地测量核物质状态方程(EOS)中的不可压缩

性这一关键参数。

曾怡乐，哲学与经济学双专业大三学生，去年夏天师从克里斯托弗﹒希

尔兹教授在圣母大学伦敦国际中心开展了一项哲学研究。她的研究比较

了亚里士多德的德性伦理思想和儒家伦理观，包括幸福主义和道、美德

与德、中庸和亚里士多德的折中，以及亚里士多德和孔子伦理理论在形

而上学中的重要性。

其他成长机会

大中华奖学金项目主管马兰组织着暑期富集奖学金的使用和学年当中

的各项活动。

学年当中，大中华奖学金项目与校牧部、海斯伯格-尤斯科学者项目、

刘氏亚洲研究院、社会问题关怀中心、本科生科研中心合作，举办讲

座，社交活动和社区服务项目。大中华学者们聚集在一起学习圣母大

学的天主教传统，庆祝华人佳节，与业界校友领袖分享经历，进行智

慧的碰撞。这些活动旨在加强大中华学者的社群凝聚力，培育领导

力，指导社区服务

大中华学者们受邀参加了圣母大学亚洲领袖论坛，与台湾前任领导人

马英九先生共进晚餐，深入交流，得到了对领导力的最直接领悟。

大中华奖学金的同窗辅导项目将低年级学生与高年级学生一对一分

组，以分享经验、资源, 促进友谊。大中华学者们还可以参加教授导师

项目，与分配的教授导师定期见面，得到他们的学术和职业建议，了

解可能的科研机会。

OTHER ENRICHMENT OPPORTUNITIES

Miranda Ma, who manages the Greater China Scholars Program, coordinates the summer enrichment awards and the ongoing campus programming for the Scholars.

Throughout the academic year, the Greater China Scholars Program, in collaboration with various campus units including Campus Ministry, Hesburgh-Yusko Scholars Program, the Liu Institute for Asia and Asian Studies, the Center for Social Concerns, and the Flatley Center for Undergraduate Scholarly Engagement, organize lectures, social activities, and community service projects. The Scholars learn about the Catholic faith, celebrate Chinese holidays together, and meet with invited alumni leaders who share their insights and experiences about Notre Dame, leadership, and service. These activities aim at strengthening the Greater China Scholars community, nurturing leadership, and guiding community service.

The Greater China Scholars experienced a cherished opportunity to learn about leadership firsthand from the esteemed Ma Ying-jeou, the former president of Taiwan, in a special dinner and conversation during his visit to campus for the Asia Leadership Forum.

All Scholars are invited to participate in a Peer Mentorship Program, in which the first year students are partnered with upperclassmen, to share experiences, resources, and enhance their fellowship. The Scholars can also participate in a Faculty Mentorship Program that provides the Scholars with a regular connection with faculty who can provide them with advice and access to academic and research opportunities.

THE GREATER CHINA SCHOLARS WEEKEND 大中华奖学金周末会

Each year twenty scholarship finalists will be selected from Greater China (mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan) to attend the Greater China Scholars Weekend in Beijing. The Selection Committee, comprised of Notre Dame faculty, administrators, alumni and parents evaluate the scholarship finalists through interviews and group activities that aim to assess the finalists’ capacity for global leadership and their commitment to the betterment of society.

The Greater China Scholar finalists also meet faculty and alumni, and along with their parents, gain a better understanding of the University’s educational mission and global community. Many Scholars and their families are warmly welcomed to join the University of Notre Dame family during the Greater China Scholars Weekend.

我是董翔宇，现在在圣母大学读大一，同时攻读计算机科学和物理专业。我来自天津市第一中学。在高中期间，我

创办了美式辩论社团，待毕业时，社团的人数已经达到了一百二十人。另外，由于我对物理的热爱，我还到天津大

学流体力学实验室完成了流体阻力的独立实验。

在圣母大学，我不光加入了行进乐队来增进我对于萨克斯演奏的能力，还在大一上学期成为计算机学院教授的实验

助理，协助研究软件安全方面的问题。此外，我还找到了创意园的老师来发展自己在网络编程方面的能力，并参加

了两次编程比赛。在空余时间里，我还在年鉴拍摄照片。目前我在学术上的兴趣更偏向于基础物理研究，因此现在

在Chia Chang教授的实验室里进行纳米孔的制作和学习。

在未来的三年多里，我计划加入设计社团来实践工程课上所学到的内容，参加更多的公益活动来回馈社会。在学术

方面，我计划学习更先进的算法来模拟宇宙的最初模型，来进一步探索宇宙的形成。

My name is Xiangyu Dong, and I am a first-year student at Notre Dame majoring in computer science and physics. I am from Tianjin No.1 High School. In high school, I founded a public forum club that grew to 120 members by the time I graduated. Due to my passion for physics, I also completed independent research on fluid resistance in the fluid laboratory of Tianjin University.

At Notre Dame, I have joined the Marching Band to develop my saxophone performance abilities. During my first semester, I served as a research assistant to a professor in the Computer Science Department doing work on software safety. In addition, I was able to develop my website programming abilities and participate in two hackathons at Innovation Park. During my leisure time, I take pictures for the yearbook. This semester, my academic interests have shifted toward fundamental physics research, so I have begun working on nanopore construction in Professor Chia Chang’s lab.

In the next three years, I plan to participate in design clubs that will allow me to apply what I have learned in my engineering classes to the real world. I also plan to participate in more humanitarian activities to give back to society. Academically, I hope to learn more advanced algorithms so that I can model the early stages of our universe and explore its formation.

我叫陈荟莅，是一名圣母大学2016届毕业生，主修计算机科学和心理学，辅修和平研究。我来自中国贵州，毕业于

贵阳六中。

在圣母大学期间，我利用假期到美国较贫穷的地方做义工。2012年暑假，我和四位圣母大学同学一起来到贵州，与

贵州师范大学的同学们进行文化交流。而这个交流项目现已变为圣母大学社会关怀中心的长期项目，每年都会有两

名学生被派至贵州交流学习两个月。

在大三下学期时，我到苏格兰的圣安德鲁斯大学留学了一个学期，还在哥斯达黎加的一间野生动物收容所工作了一

个月。在毕业后，我又去到赞比亚做非洲农村基础教育的实习工作。

现在，我是麻省理工学院媒体实验组全额奖学金的研究生，参与到把科技与人文关怀结合到一起的跨领域研究中。

我的研究方向是搭建社交机器人来帮助孩子们更有趣地、更有启发性地学习语言和锻炼口头表达能力。

My name is Huili Chen. I graduated from Notre Dame in 2016 with bachelor’s degrees in computer science and psychology, and a minor in peace studies. I grew up in Guizhou, China, where I attended Guiyang No. 6 High School.

At Notre Dame, I volunteered in several economically underprivileged areas of the U.S. In the summer of 2012, four other students and I started a cultural memory program in my hometown and collaborated with students from Guizhou Normal University. Now this program has turned into a social service learning program at Notre Dame’s Social Concern Center, which sends about two students to Guizhou each year for two months.

In the second semester of my junior year, I went to study abroad at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland for a semester. I also went to Costa Rica, volunteering in an animal sanctuary for one month. After graduating, I had an internship in Zambia, and worked on improving education in rural Africa with the Impact Network.

I am now a fully-funded graduate student in the Personal Robots Group at the MIT Media Lab, working on interdisciplinary research topics that integrate technology and humanity. My research goal is to build socially intelligent robots that interact with children to help them learn storytelling and language skills more deeply and creatively.

在高中，作为毕业生代表和学生会主席，我有幸与同学们、学校领导和家长一同举办了各类学生活动。为了鼓励

学生了解时事、参与慈善，我参与组织了一系列的活动，包括：旨在提升学生对国际性贫困问题的理解的第一届

PovertyX（贫困体验）；毕业生给低年级学生分享大学申请经验的平台Peer Mentor；还有将所有收入捐赠给特殊儿

童教育的大型校际嘉年华。

在圣母，我希望利用大中华奖学金项目和海斯伯格·尤思科学者项目所提供的丰富资源，通过国际游学，来充分探

索我对教育的兴趣。感恩节假期期间，我作为首届燕京社会创新论坛代表，到北京大学燕京学堂参与了为期三天

I am Xinhui Hong, a graduate from Shenzhen College of International Education and a member of the Notre Dame Class of 2020. I am from Dongguan, Guangdong.

As valedictorian of the graduating Class of 2016 and Chairman of the Student Union in high school, I had the opportunity to work with my peers, the school administrative team, and parents in organizing events for students. Aiming to provide educational opportunities and promote participation in charity, I hosted a series of events, including the first PovertyX, a poverty simulation educating participants on global issues related to poverty; Peer Mentor, a consulting program where seniors assisted juniors and sophomores in the college application process; and Raise and Give Day, a fundraising event to sponsor special education for children with developmental disabilities.

At Notre Dame, through the resources offered by the Greater China Scholars Program and the Hesburgh-Yusko Scholars Program, I intend to explore my passion for education through international travel. During Thanksgiving break, I traveled to Beijing as a delegate for the Yenching Social Innovation Forum hosted by the Yenching Academy of Peking University and participated in a 3-day forum on the theme of “Bridging China’s Education Gap.” As a member of FUEL, the branch of the Student Government for first-year students, and through the Center for Social Concerns, I hope to be involved in the issues taking place here at Notre Dame and in the community beyond.I have been extremely blessed to join the Notre Dame family. As such, I hope that through my education here at Notre Dame, I will be a blessing to others.

我是梁册。我在圣母大学读大三，攻读国际经济学，日语和应用数学。

在圣母大学学习不仅给予了我广泛探索学术爱好的机会，也潜移默化地塑造了我对未来职业道路的规划。在圣母大

学语言文化研究中心的支持下，我有幸在大一暑假于日本北海道留学八周，深入学习语言的同时，与寄宿家庭相处

体会地道的当地文化。我这个学期在东京庆应义塾大学交流学习，在继续提高日本语能力的同时，参与有关近代日

本经济史、东亚语言文化、以及东亚财政与货币政策的课程。

在大中华奖学金的支持下，我于去年暑假在中国瓷娃娃罕见病研究中心作为全职志愿者工作了两个月，并进行了独

立研究。主要为罹患郎格罕细胞组织增生症的患儿提供一对一的志愿服务。在圣母过去两年中所感受的天主教信仰

在很大程度上促使我做出了这一决定。

在圣母大学的体验是我人生中宝贵的财富，我由衷地为迄今为止我在这里经历的一切而感恩。

CE LIANG 梁册 Class of 2018 2018届 Nanjing Foreign Language School 南京外国语学校毕业生

I am a junior studying international economics, Japanese, and Applied and Computational Mathematics and Statistics (ACMS) at the University of Notre Dame.

At Notre Dame, I have been offered many opportunities to explore my academic interests, as well as to prepare for my future career. Through the Center for the Study of Languages and Cultures, I was able to participate in the Hokkaido International Foundation summer language and culture program with the homestay experience in Hakodate, Japan for eight weeks, during which time I studied the Japanese language and experienced authentic local culture. I am currently enrolled in the Notre Dame - Keio University exchange program, where I study the Japanese language, culture and history, as well as East Asian trade and monetary policies in Tokyo.

During the past summer, via the GCS Summer Enrichment Award, I was able to serve as a full-time volunteer at the China-Dolls Center for Rare Disorders Beijing Office, where I helped children with Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) and conducted independent research. This research project was largely inspired by the Catholic spirit I have been immersed in at Notre Dame for the past two years.

I am grateful for the experience, skills, and fond memories I have been granted as a member of the Notre Dame community. This has been the most significant personal development experience I have been through.


我叫刘雨桐，来自中国北京，现在是圣母大学大二的学生，主修生物，辅修哲学。

过去一年半在圣母大学的生活学习非常激动人心。我大一的时候有幸跟随教授在实验室中做有关斑马鱼肾元再生机

制的研究，让我有机会学习更高级的实验技巧并对生物科研有了更清晰的认识。

大一暑假，我用十周的时间在乌干达六个不同的城市帮助当地的临终关怀机构建立基于智能手机的数据收集网络。

在那期间，我对乌干达的文化以及国际医疗都有了更深的理解。与临终的病人的接触也是我对于人类的生命与尊严

有了更深刻的认识。现在我是一名Take Ten项目的学生管理员，并负责两所学校的教学任务，帮助学生和成年人学

习如何有效进行冲突解决。

My name is Yutong Liu. I am originally from Beijing, China, and I am currently a sophomore at the University of Notre Dame studying biological science and philosophy.

The last year and a half I have spent here at Notre Dame has been inspiring and exciting. During my freshman year, I was able to participate in undergraduate research on renal-regeneration in zebra fish, which allowed me to acquire different lab skills and gain a deeper understanding of biological lab research.

In the summer of my freshman year, I spent 10 weeks in six different cities in Uganda facilitating the construction of a palliative care data collection system based on smart phones. During my time there, I learned more about Ugandan culture and global health, and I developed a deeper appreciation for human life and dignity. Today, I serve as a student coordinator and team leader for two sites for the Take Ten program, which endeavors to empower children and adults with knowledge in effective conflict resolution.

At Notre Dame, I was not only inspired intellectually in the classroom, I was challenged to engage with communities and real life problems. I am very grateful for the opportunities Notre Dame has offered me.

I am Wisdom Mak from Hong Kong. A proud member of the Class of 2015, I graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Business Administration, double-majoring in finance and film, television & theatre. In the summer of 2016, I moved back to my hometown and began to pursue a career in something I was really passionate about, which was made possible through the comprehensive multi-disciplinary experiences I obtained during my four years at Notre Dame.

As an associate consultant at Prophet, a global brand and marketing consultancy firm, I work with a world-class team every day to bring innovative and insightful brand solutions to clients around the world. Prior to that, I interned and worked at global companies including Ernst & Young, Disney, and Citibank. My time at the Mendoza College of Business played a pivotal role in shaping me into the conscientious business professional I strive to be today. Mendoza has provided me with invaluable guidance throughout the years and has continuously reminded me to ask more of business.

During my free time, I continue to assist local communities through various non-profit organizations, building upon my volunteer experiences at Notre Dame serving children and their families. I am currently working with the Council of Early Childhood Education and Services to bring extracurricular programs to underprivileged young students in Hong Kong.

My name is Jenny Ng, and I am from Hong Kong, China. I graduated from King George V School. My time at Notre Dame has enabled me to fully explore my interests and better understand myself. When I first came to Notre Dame, I intended on majoring in finance, as I thought it would be a good vehicle for me to eventually pursue social entrepreneurship. Due to my interest in finance, I participated in an internship with the Social Entrepreneur Corps in Ecuador during the summer following my freshman year, and then with Deutsche Bank in New York City during the summer after my sophomore year. However, these two experiences showed me that my true interest lies not in business, but in conflict resolution. I am currently studying political science and minoring in Portuguese. I am writing my senior thesis on Chinese-Latin American relations. Through the Greater China Scholars Program and the Center for Undergraduate Scholarly Engagement, I have conducted research in Beijing, Turkey, Iceland, Morocco and England. Next year, I hope to work with refugees and pursue a master’s degree in public policy. I am also working with Education Bridge to build a school in South Sudan. In my free time, I enjoy rock climbing. I am grateful for the support of the Notre Dame community and for the many opportunities I have to explore my interests.

My name is Qingling Wang and I was born and raised in Beijing, China. Notre Dame, with its rich international opportunities, strong academic support, and wide extra-curricular selection, has empowered me to pursue my dream of becoming a liaison between the East and the West. On campus, I served as an International Ambassador, working with foreign students. In addition, my interest in business and commerce led me to examine accounting and consulting case studies. Beyond campus, I seized cross-cultural opportunities, including business case competitions in Canada and China, summer school in Israel, and an exchange program in England.

While I was studying abroad at the University of Oxford, I worked for the Student Consultancy and completed a consulting challenge with students from different countries. Interested in international business and financial markets as well, I conducted research on American cross-border trade legislation as well as banking regulatory systems in the United States and the United Kingdom. In conversations between the East and the West, I see three major impediments: language, culture and law. Notre Dame has helped me work through the first two. Currently a student at Harvard Law School, I am exploring career opportunities that would allow me to contribute to conversations between China and the United States. The skills and values I acquired from Notre Dame continue to support me in this journey.


我叫王欣毅，是圣母大学计算机系一名大四的学生。圣母大学的四年时光对我有十分深远的影响。我是计算机专业

的学生，但是也需要上一些哲学，神学，文学等必修课。这使我可以了解到很多专业以外的问题，也让我成长为一

个更全面更智慧的人。

圣母大学的教授和同学非常愿意帮助他人。如果没有教授和朋友们的帮助，我永远也不可能在四年中学到如此多的

东西。在上大学之前我并没有接触过很多编程的知识，所以一开始学习的时候我十分害怕。我的教授给了我很多鼓

励，帮助我学习。在我大二的时候，尽管我并没有很多编程基础，很多计算机系的教授还愿意让我参与他们的研究

项目。他们的指导让我的技术和其他很多方面更快地进步。我在大学期间在参与了两个研究项目，其中一个的成果

今年刚刚发表。我也有幸在两个暑假中分别在谷歌和领英公司实习。

圣母大学氛围很好。同学们愿意互相帮助，而且大家不光看重金钱事业方面的成就，更会思考自己的社会责任和自

己所做工作对社会的意义。在圣母大学的经历会永远激励我不断提高自己。

我是吴康馨，是圣母大学建筑系大二学生。

圣母大学提供了我很多深入探索专业的机会。大一暑假我在大中华奖学金的帮助下进行了道家思想对中国园林和赖

特建筑的影响的研究。在大一担任建筑学院计算机房咨询员工作的基础上，这学期我获得了建筑学院图书馆的工作

机会，并参与了图书馆中南本德历史建筑模型重现和可触摸圣母大学盲人地图项目。通过这个工作机会，我对建筑

软件的理解加深了，接触了3D打印技术，也对自己大学的周边环境有了更好的了解。此外，我还参加了”仁人家园”

志愿者活动，在南本德建造经济适用房。我感到我在圣母的生活非常充实。

不仅是专业上，圣母大学还使我保持并拓宽自己的兴趣爱好。跟随校爵士乐队老师，我能够继续学习玩了七年多的

爵士鼓。在大二我还上了一直很喜欢的日语课。我计划在下个暑假前往日本探索当地建筑和风土人情。

My name is Xinyi Wang and I am currently a senior majoring in computer science. Notre Dame has greatly shaped me as a person. Though a computer science major, I have needed to take core requirements like philosophy, theology, and literature, which have introduced me to many important problems outside of my field of study, making me a more well-rounded person and informed citizen.

People at Notre Dame are extremely helpful and kind. I could have never become who I am now without the help of my professors and friends. I had never coded before college, so I was really scared when I started taking computer science classes my sophomore year. My professors gave me a lot of encouragement and support. Their patient mentorship improved my skills as a computer science student, and their work ethic and kind encouragement greatly influenced me as a person. I worked in two labs, and one had its results published this year. I was also able to intern at Google and LinkedIn during two of my summers in college.

The environment at Notre Dame is very supportive and accepting. People love to help each other, and we are encouraged to be socially responsible. One distinct characteristic of a Notre Dame student is that they do not simply pursue success as defined by money and status, but also think about the meaning of their work to society. My experience at Notre Dame will always encourage me to keep improving myself.

I am Kangxin Wu, a sophomore at Notre Dame studying architecture.

Notre Dame has offered me many opportunities to dive into my major. Last summer, with the help of GCS summer enrichment funding, I completed independent research about the influence of Daoism on Chinese Gardens and the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright. By working as a student computer consultant in the Bond Hall computer lab my freshman year, I got the chance to work in the Bond Hall library, where I joined in the Building South Bend and Campus Tactile Mapping architecture library projects. These projects helped me improve my knowledge of architectural computer programs. They also helped me learn about 3D printing techniques and the environment surrounding my university. In addition, I participated in a weekly volunteer activity called Habitat for Humanity, where I helped construct affordable housing in South Bend. I feel my life at Notre Dame has been interesting and fulfilling.

Aside from my academic work, I have continued old hobbies and explored new interests at Notre Dame. I have continued learning how to play the drums, a hobby I have had for over seven years. Furthermore, I am taking Japanese classes. I am planning to visit Japan next summer and enjoy the beautiful culture and architectural design there.

上高中時，我是學生會董事，負責組織各項活動。我與我的團隊一起解決各種因紙張浪費和食物垃圾所帶來的環保

問題。作爲學校田徑隊的隊長，我帶領我的團隊參加了在台北，新加坡，和印度尼西亞舉辦的賽事。此外，我也是

學校英式橄欖球隊的球員，是學校西班牙語榮譽學會的成員。

我現在是Design for America工作室領導團隊的一員。我們是全國性的設計工作室聯盟，主旨是利用設計理念解決社

會問題。在這個工作室里，我和同伴們成立了“數碼宿舍”網站。這個網站通過虛擬現實技術讓大學生們可以了解他

們將來的宿舍是什麼樣的。我們在學校的商業點子挑戰賽中獲得了第二名，現在正在參加學校吉戈創業中心的麥克

I am Jonathan Xu. I am a member of the Notre Dame class of 2019, majoring in computer science.

In high school, I was an executive officer in the Student Government, where I worked to organize events such as Field Day and Spirit Week. In addition, I worked with my fellow officers to tackle environmental and nutrition-related problems within our school. As the captain of the varsity track and field team, I led my team to competitions in Taiwan, Singapore, and Indonesia. In addition, I was a member of the varsity rugby team and the Spanish honor society.

As a sophomore at Notre Dame, I am a member of the leadership team in the Design for America studio. We are a nationwide network of design studios that use innovative design to solve local and social problems. Through the club I co-founded digidorm, a website that allows current and incoming college students to learn about and experience their future dorm rooms through virtual reality. We placed 2nd in the on-campus Business Ideas Challenge, and we are currently participating in the McCloskey Business Plan Competition through the Gigot Center for Entrepreneurship. I also spend my time during the semester participating in intramural sports, Student Government, and mentoring freshman in the Greater China Scholars Program.

Last summer I interned at General Electric Aviation, which I secured via the University’s outstanding career resources and the help of my mentors. I am excited to see where my Notre Dame journey will bring me next.

My name is Nuohan (Naurin) Zhang and I’m from Beijing. I currently work as an analyst at the United Nations Environment Programme Inquiry into the Design of a Sustainable Financial System. I provide research and logistical support to the newly created G20 Green Finance Study Group. Istudied International Economics and French at Notre Dame and graduated in 2015.

Thanks to the amazing opportunities Notre Dame has provided, I worked as a journalist assistant for the New York Times Paris Bureau in Summer 2014. Since early 2013, I have worked as a student researcher for a National Science Foundation funded research project on trader networks in conflict zones. In Winter 2015, I conducted field research in India, with focuses on gender equality and economic prosperity. I speak English, Chinese, French, and Arabic.

At Notre Dame, I was also awarded several competitive and merit-based grants, including funding from the Summer Language Abroad (SLA), Nanovic Institute for European Studies, Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP), and special project funding from the Provost’s Office. Notre Dame provided me with an amazing education with endless opportunities. Most importantly, she helps me to stick firmly to the faith of “go forth and do good.”

My name is Yuchen Zou, and I am a junior majoring in economics, Applied and Computational Mathematics and Statistics (ACMS) and political science at Notre Dame. In addition to the Greater China Scholars Program, I am also a member of the Hesburgh-Yusko Scholars Program and the Glynn Family Honors Program.

In school, I am actively involved in the Student International Business Council (SIBC), where I served on the Board of Directors and completed multiple finance, consulting and international economic exchange projects. With the help of my peers in SIBC, I was able to secure an investment banking internship at J.P. Morgan in New York City for Summer 2017. In addition to business, I did a volunteering internship at the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office last semester, where I assisted in the non-profit legal aid process for child abuse and domestic violence victims. The Greater China Scholarship and Hesburgh-Yusko Scholars Program (HYSP) have inspired and supported me to explore the world, reflect on my passion, and give back to local communities. In the summer of 2015 I traveled to Ecuador and interned for an economic empowerment non-profit called Social Entrepreneur Corps. Last summer I traveled to Panama and did a case study on the local mining industry.

I am studying abroad in Dublin, Ireland for a semester in Spring 2017. This is a dream come true. I am grateful for the opportunities and support I have received from Notre Dame and the Greater China Scholars Program.

My name is Zhixing Zhang. I am from Beijing. I am currently majoring in mathematics and history. As a member of the Notre Dame History Honors Program, I am writing an honors thesis on Medieval/Early Modern East Asian History under the supervision of Professor Julia Adeney Thomas. Over the past summer, I was fortunate enough to have received generous research funding from the Liu Institute for Asia and Asian Studies, the Kellogg Institute for International Studies, and the Center for Undergraduate Scholarly Engagement, which allowed me to travel to Japan and Korea to conduct archival and field research towards my thesis. As a mathematics major, I have enjoyed and benefitted tremendously from exploring fundamental and analytical mathematical principles.

In terms of extracurricular activities, I served as Vice President of the Notre Dame History Club for two years, I was an international ambassador at the International Student and Scholars Affairs, I served as an officer in the Notre Dame Chinese Student and Scholar Association, and I have worked as a tutor at the Center for the Study of Languages and Cultures since my sophomore year.

I have recently been admitted to Harvard Law School, where I hope to devote myself to the study of international and comparative law. Words cannot adequately express my gratitude to Notre Dame and the Li Ka Shing Foundation for granting me the honor of the Greater China Full Scholarship. 大中华奖学金项目为大中华地区的圣母大学申请人提供择优录取的奖学

金。符合条件的申请人必须是中国内地、香港、澳门或台湾的公民或居

民。项目也支持学校在大中华地区的其他交流、联系活动。

大中华奖学金不仅为有突出成就的学生提供财务支持，而且是获奖者大学

时代得到的重要荣誉和认可。竞争激烈的选拔过程能为获奖者简历增添华

彩，有利于其毕业后就业或继续深造。

大中华奖学金的捐助人给予中国优秀学子宝贵的机会就读全美排名前20位

的圣母大学。捐款人可以捐助可支用资金，也可以建立不同金额的基金，

MAKING A GIFT TO THE GREATER CHINA SCHOLARS PROGRAMThe Greater China Scholars Program provides merit scholarships for applicants to the University of Notre Dame. Eligible applicants must be residents or citizens in Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, or Taiwan. Additionally, the Program sponsors activities that further the University’s contact, engagement, and exchange with the Greater China region.

Merit-based scholarships provide financial aid to students who demonstrate extraordinary achievement relative to their peers. Beyond financial aid, these scholarships bring a level of prestige and recognition to the recipient’s college career. The highly competitive nature of the application and selection process provides recipients with a distinguished profile in the pursuit of employment or graduate school admission.

By underwriting tuition and related expenses, benefactors to the Greater China Scholars Program ensure that exceptionally qualified Chinese students have the opportunity to attend a Top 20 University. Benefactors may make one-time contributions or they may endow scholarships at various funding levels. Endowments above predetermined amounts will be named at the donor’s behest. Appropriate recognition will be offered with the donor’s consent, including the listing of the benefactor’s name on the Scholarship and Fellowships Recognition Wall on campus, invitations to special recognition events, annual reports, and regular correspondence with scholarship recipients.
