Dear Members and Friends of HSK, What wonderful weather we had last week! Not too hot and not too cold! A summer with this weather would be so nice but…it’s going to get hotter. Anyhow, I hope you have been in good health. I have had a summer cold for about 3 weeks but I think I am almost at the end of it. Last week I watched part of a Sunday morning service at a church in Honolulu. Ruth and I have passed that church several times and always thought about visiting it but….not yet. And the You Tube video revealed that several hundred people may be attending the meetings. The church stage has many beautiful lights and the musicians play skillfully. The pastor’s message was very easy to understand. And when I told my wife about that church, again I said to her, ‘I wish God would make a big church in Japan.’ But can you imagine what I also thought? I thought churches can be like ships. A big ship doesn’t move very much when the waves are high and the wind is strong. But a little ship cannot be kept still in high waves and a strong wind. Similarly, big churches move steadily forward while little churches may often struggle to exist. Conclusion: (1)The best captain is extremely wise. (2)Reaching the destination with no losses is what really matters. In response to Joshua’s question about whose side a ‘man with a sword’ was on, the ‘man’ replied, “No, rather I indeed come now as captain

of the host of the Lord’(Joshua 5:14). Another conclusion: I must be careful about how I lead you. The size of the ship will be determined by God! Today we will learn another new song. Yes, we learned two new songs last month and this year we may have learned more than 5. I think that someone probably wishes we could review more of what we have learned and….we will. But let me add this idea to your thoughts: When you hear a new song, please go home and find someone singing that song on You Tube. Then sing the song over and over again. And what will that accomplish? Ans: You will return to the church with a stronger desire to worship the Lord! ‘And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord’(Ephesians 5:18-19). I have come to church today expecting to meet several people for the first time. I have come to church today wanting to know our Heavenly Father better. I have come to church today hoping to encourage all who feel badly. Why have you come to church today? Please think carefully about your answer. This is the truth: ‘Now you are Christ’s body and individually members of it’(1 Cor. 12:27). Your pastor……Ben

Next Sunday(30th)…there will be a big BBQ in the church parking area after the morning meeting. This BBQ will be delicious Japanese food plus something

that everyone also seems to like…Chili Hot Dogs! Your friends are welcome to this event. It will be special! (And if it rains, we will eat inside!) Adults meals will be ¥500 and yochien meals will be ¥400. First time visitors are free!

All songs that are sung at HSK…can be found on You Tube in English and most of them can be found in Portuguese. Please search, listen, and learn to sing these songs

with passion. Your pastor is convinced that if singing at HSK is simply what we do once a week, we are not really going to enjoy singing!

To all parents with young children: Please do not allow your children to run inside the church build-ing. Please teach them to walk. There are o lde r v i s i t o r s and members who could suffer serious injury if they were pushed over. Let’s keep our church a safe place for everyone.

If you have not been water baptized…our pastor is waiting for you to ask him for this experience in the church baptismal pool. You do not have

to be a member of this church in order to receive this experience. But, this experience is neces-sary in order to become a

member of HSK.

If you did not know this: There are two boxes in the main room for financial gifts to HSK. The larger box is at the front of the main room and a small white box is located at the back of the main room. You may use either box. The contents of both boxes are given to the church secretary each Sunday which she deposits in the bank as soon as possible.

The air conditioning will be on…each Sunday for the next few months. It is difficult to have the right tem-perature for everyone therefore…if you feel too cool, please bring anything which you think will keep you warmer. Also, unless you are asked to change the air conditioning thermostat, please do not touch it! Thank you.

…………………………………………….. 1 Thessalonians 523 Now may the God of peace

Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

24 Faithful is He who calls you, and He also will bring it to pass.

If you want to escape a great deal of trouble and misunderstanding in your life, learn to distinguish between conviction, opinion, prejudice, and taste. It has well been said that an opinion is something that you hold, but a conviction is something that holds you. Most of us have very few convictions, but the ones we do have are important to us. Convictions are the compasses of life—they keep us moving in the right direction. There are usually no convictions without convulsions. You can pick up new opinions at a coffee break, but true convictions come out of real conflict and suffering. Just as Isaac had to dig again the wells that his father dug, so each new generation has to discover for itself the power and reality of spiritual convictions. A secondhand faith is not faith at all. There is a well-known story told about an evangelist named, George Whitefield.

He asked a man what he believed, and the man replied, “I believe what my church believes.” “What does your church believe?” Whitefield asked. “My church believes what I believe,” was the answer. “Well, what do you both believe?”. “We both believe the same thing!” That man thought he had convictions, but all he really had were secondhand opinions. We get our convictions with difficulty, but opinions are easy to obtain and easy to change. There is no explaining why we hold the opinions that we do. Some are carefully thought out and defended, but no opinion should grip us the way a true conviction should hold us. Opinions are debatable, but convictions are not. We may certainly discuss our convictions and dig deeper into the basic principles of the faith, but we do not debate whether these principles are true or false.
