ThemeRingstorpsvägen displays a very varied buildingmorphology, typical of a dispersed innersuburban settlement, giving excellentopportunities for new housing environments.Although a lot of people move through the area,there is however a lack of urban intensity and aneed for an upgrading of the public spaces andthe commercial activities. The existing park is animportant resource in the area and its relation tothe new dwellings is a crucial issue.

ConurbationHelsingborg has its roots in the end ofthe 11th century when the town ismentioned in contemporary sources forthe first time. The town can offer veryattractive living environments, a finelocation for businesses and goodaccess to the rest of the Öresundregion. The harbour is Sweden's secondlargest and the shipping traffic over thestraight to Denmark is a visible featureof town life.

SiteThe study area includes two separate sites. The northernsite is the area around Ringstorp-platsen, a roundaboutbordering a small centre containing commercial and publicservices in rather dilapidated conditions The southern sitestreches along the eastern side of the road from aschool/daycare-centre with derelict sporting-grounds.

The site area is bordered by the Ringstorpsvägen road andthe existing settlements to the west and north, a mix ofafter-war tenement buildings, row-houses and detachedprivate homes. To the east of the road is today untendedgrounds and an allotment area for private agriculture andleisure-time, surrounding a fortress-like water reservoirfrom the turn of the century. To the south is a businessarea.

ProgrammePlanning for the Ringstorp area should be in line withthe overall strategic plan for the development ofHelsingborg, aiming at a multinuclear urban structurewith people at its core. All development areas are to becharacterised by an urban spirit in which all aspects oflife, housing, work, leisure and movement contribute tothe whole.

The objective for the northern site is to upgrade thearea into an attractive and fully functioning localcommercial centre, also containing some additions ofnew housing.

On the southern site there is to be built housing in thepark along the street, relating to the present greenery asa structuring element.

Issuesfunctional : The traffic should be surveyed and co-ordinated,making circulation around the area more efficient. The aim is to reducethe total traffic density in the area and to improve street architecture.

social : The aim of the programme is the will to densify an areasituated very centrally in the town, to supplement the neighborhoodwith new housing and supplying people with a pleasant livingenvironment. The sites should at least contain 150-200 new dwellings.

perceptual : The area offers access to good link roads, services andgreen areas. In the centre there is the old water tower, and a memorialof the battle of Helsingborg in 1710, which add an exciting historicaspect to the area.
