Dear Parishioners,

As these days grind relentlessly towards our annual celebration of the Nativity of the Lord, the crowd’s words in response to John the Baptist’s preaching from today’s Gospel passage can seem all too real: “What should we do?” Ask almost any one of us in our assemblies today this same question, and we are likely to get a long list of things that must still be accomplished before the imminent December 25th deadline: more shopping to be done, decorations that must be put up, cards to be sent, packages to be mailed, baking and cooking to be done, travel plans to be confirmed, house to be cleaned, parties that, well…, we just HAVE to attend! It’s all a wonderful, festive burst of chaos, isn’t it?

But John’s preaching called for a different kind of response from the people who gathered by the Jordan River a millennia ago, hearing his call to repentance. Rather than focusing on the past—and the burden that past deeds often placed on them, John called the crowd to live rightly and justly in their present circumstances. If you were a soldier, be a good soldier and treat those you deal with justly and fairly. If you are a tax collector, don’t take more than what is owed. If you are wealthy, share what you don’t really need for yourself with others who do not have even the basics, and so forth and so on. John’s words and his very present-minded approach gave people who might otherwise have been written-off by others great hope and expectation, because this yet undefined, yet alluring, promise of salvation was something that was suddenly very possible for them, if only they lived their life justly moving forward.

It is not a hard concept, really, when you think about it. We cannot jump in a time machine and go back to fix all the things we have done wrong. Even if we could, it is highly possible that we would make things worse, or at least make other mistakes in their place. So, all we have is the present. But how awesome a gift the present moment is! Here, today, at this very moment, we can make a difference and start anew. John’s words were life to a people who had dwelt in the darkness of sin and the notion that nothing changes, that I cannot change. He said: “Yes, you can. Today. Right here. Right now. Go forward and do not look backwards. Live your life as rightly as you can in your present reality, and you will ready yourself for the One who is coming, who is mightier than us all.” In the end, it will not be our own efforts that will bring about Salvation, but rather, our specific task is to make ourselves, and our world ready to welcome the Lord when he comes.

So, what are we to do?

Let us answer this question well, for time is short!

Fr. Tim Harrison

This Week in Our Collaborative

The “Pink” Candle This weekend we celebrate the third Sunday of Advent, also known as Gaudete Sunday. We light a rose candle on the Advent wreath and the priest may wear rose vestments at Mass. Gaudete is the Latin word for “rejoice.” Since we are now halfway through the season of Advent, we rejoice. Our preparation is now half over and we are getting close to Christmas. We are encouraged on our journey to Christmas with this uplifting color. (usccb.org)

Youth Ministry Youth Mass

Sunday, December 13, Holy Redeemer, Merrimac at 6pm.

Serving God by Serving Others

This is our Youth Ministry theme this year. We have donated to Our Neighbor’s Table in Amesbury and to The Pettengill House in Salisbury. It is time to give more.

We are teaming up with Pentucket Cares. Pentucket Cares is taking care of the homeless directly. At our youth Mass on Sunday, December 13 we will conduct a hat, glove, and scarf drive. We prefer them brand new. However, “gently used” are acceptable too. Particularly prized are home-made knitted items. All sizes are needed—men and women—with the greatest need “large” sized gloves for men.

All donations are delivered directly to those who are homeless, those living in shelters, and the poor in the Merrimack Valley. Nothing ends up on a thrift store shelf. We will collect these items and they will be delivered directly to the homeless through the Pentucket Cares initiative. View their Facebook page at: www.facebook.com/events/474802176012883/

Worldwide Marriage Encounter Does the way you live your life and especially your marriage give praise and glory to God? Let God transform your marriage relationship. The next Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekends are January 23–24 2016 and April 1–3 2016. For more information call Steve and Michelle O’Leary at 1-800-710-WWME,

visit our webpage at www.wwme.org, or at https://www.facebook.com/Wwmema

Offertory Envelopes Did you know that you can attend Mass at any worship site in our collaborative and use your usual offertory envelopes? Just drop your envelope in the collection and we will make sure it gets delivered to your home Parish.

Blue Christmas Prayer Service

A Prayer Service of Comfort and Hope The Catholic parishes in Amesbury, Merrimac, Newburyport, Salisbury, and West Newbury extend an invitation to those who are lonely, broken-hearted or grieving to join us in prayer on Sunday, December 20, at 4:00pm . We will pray and sing together at Saint Ann Church, 300 Main Street in West Newbury . Our prayer time together will help us to feel the true meaning of love and hope that this season gives to each one of us. The Christmas Season, highlighted by the birth of Jesus, helps us to discover hope, that light does shine in the darkness even though it may not feel like it at times. All are welcome.

Cursillo Cursillo offers us the opportunity to deepen our relationship with Christ. Jesus said, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.” (Rev 3:20, NKJV). A life lived in faith is a life lived in joy!

2015–2016 Cursillo Calendar

All are welcome to attend our IC Ultreya Meetings on the Friday of each Cursillo weekend in the St. James Chapel in the IC Parish Center at 7:00pm. If you need a ride, please contact Valerie Murphy at 978-462-7534.

currently giving to four programs: Emmaus, Inc. in Haverhill, The Holiday Helper Program for the Pentucket area, Pregnancy Care Center in Haverhill and Newburyport areas, and Lazarus House Ministries in Lawrence. Some of the tags on the trees are for specific items that the groups are requesting, including toys, clothing, and food pantry items. Please return the unwrapped gifts with the tags to the churches by the weekend of December 12–13 so we have time to deliver to the programs in time for Christmas. Centering Prayer for Advent As the days shorten and we enter the darkest season of the year, we light advent candles and anticipate the coming of our Savior Jesus, the light of the world. In the business of preparing for Christmas, we may miss the gifts of Advent. Waiting with trust in God’s promise of love that saves deepens our faith and we become people of true hope who, loved by God, are able to love.

During Advent please consider joining us weekly for Centering Prayer. As we enter the silence of God’s love we assent to God’s presence and action within us. We say “Yes” to His invitation to be transformed into people of true hope. Simply resting in God in silence, we surrender and come to know in our hearts God’s unmerited, unconditional love for us and, transformed by this grace, we can share His love in daily life.

All are welcome to join us as we pray in this ancient Christian tradition and together prepare this Advent to welcome the Savior into our hearts and our lives. The Centering Prayer group meets every Wednesday evening from 6:00–7:00pm in the IC Charity Dining Room. For more information contact Elizabeth McCarthy: 978-462-7483.

Pope Francis: Year of Mercy ( 2013)

We find Jesus’ wounds in carrying out works of mercy, giving to our body–the body–the soul too, but–I stress–the body of your wounded brother, because he is hungry, because he is thirsty, because he is naked because he is humiliated, because he is a

slave, because he’s in jail, because he is in the hospital. Those are the wounds of Jesus today. (7/3/13)

True mercy, the mercy God gives to us and teaches us, demands justice, it demands that the poor find the way to be poor no longer. It asks—and it asks us, the Church, us, the City of Rome, it asks the institutions—to ensure that no one ever again stands in need of a soup-kitchen, of makeshift-lodgings, of a service of legal assistance in order to have his legitimate right recognized to live and to work, to be fully a person. Online Giving Online Giving is a convenient and safe way to make a one-time or a recurring (weekly) donation. Getting started is easy—you need to be a registered member of our parish community. Registration forms are available in the foyer of the churches or at the parish offices. Once you register, visit our Website and click on the Online giving link. There are different funds you can contribute to, you choose: Monthly Offertory, Monthly Collection, Restoration, or Grand Annual. If you manage your other bills online, why not give to your church online? It is safe and secure and you get to decide exactly when and to where your gift will be made. Any questions? Contact Donald Alunni, Collaborative business manager at 978-462-2724 x 7351.
