I wanted to publish this issue earlier, but I just didnt make it. In the moment Im writ-
ing this, Im sitting in my room in OK, center or contemporary art in Linz, Austria, pre-
paring or the paper toy exhibition I have as part o Next Comic estival. At the sametime Im also working on new ye-boT animation, as part o artist in residence program,
or the same institution. Its really a lot o work, I already transormed one room into a
big installation or ye-boT toys and Im building all the customs and all the exclusive
toys eatured in II LOVE editions, this number included.
Thereore, I would like to thank all the artists who joined my ye-boT initiative, this is
already the second ye-boT show and the whole project is getting bigger. And here I
have to mention also a new project by Robo Bear rom Boonika, called I3Dyou, who
modeled some o the ye-boT customs in 3. ( Images on right, more about this soon!)
And o course, thanks to all the artists who enriched this magazine with their exclu-sive toys! This exhibition in OK center is also your exhibition!
And special thanks to Nick Knite, who helped me out with ew parts o this issue, so I
could have nshed it in time! This is not the reason hes eatured in II LOVE again :)

About Mecha:
How did you came to the idea of Mecha Bunny?
There actually is a neat little story behind that:
I showed pictures o my other papertoys to a riend, who then told
me to do her avorite animal, a bunny! I instantly had an idea o whatit could look like, did a sketch and then worked out the template in I
think 2 days.
What success did you have with this toy? Seems that youre putting more in this toy than in
others...
The response or that one was kind o overwhelming. Even Castleorte was kind o mad at
me, that I instead o him, thought o that character... I mean, he IS nicebunny!
It seemed to get more attention rom people than my other creations, so I obliged. So, all in
all, with the now three Mecha6 series out there, the SNNC-series (black and white-edition)and our customs that were released out o the series (Xmas-Bunny, a color variant by ABZ,
another custom by Type01 and the latest two customs by Kekli) there were 30 versions o
MechaBunny over the time-span o just a year!
One more thing about why I like MechaBunny so much: it really needed very little to almostno eort to realize that project. It kind o came to me. All the parts seemed to t right away,
I have never had such an easy time to assemble a character.

About the show:
I met the guys who did a book on just black and white styles, mostly grafti, called
Schwarz au Weiss - Style needs no color. They liked my work as well and I was asked to
participate in some shows they did. Because o that, the idea sprung to my head to doa series with just black and white customs. It turned out great, the guys loved it and the
show was a huge success!
The customs or that were amazing and it proved to me that style really does need no
color.
Big Mecha and commercialization:
I would like to have some commercial success with it! But, I did the big versions, because
I also very much like the shape and I wanted to see it huge! Plus, the riend who asked
me to do the Bunny in the rst place wanted to have a
giant one or her place..
Do I want to mass produce them? Yes, o course! But I
will probably start by making them on demand. I thedemand would be big enough though, I would gladly
go ahead and produce them.
I made three big MBuns, one is around 90cm tall and
the two smaller ones are around 75cm.
I am also planning three very cool non-paper versionsor the uture: one made out o Plexiglas with some lights
on the inside; one made out o wood together with Tou-
gui where I want to laser-engrave his rst version on it;
and one as an ipod-dock, with the eet as loudspeakers
and the body as a sub wooer... that kind o thing. ^
That would take a lot o planning, as you might imag-
ine. When I do it, I want to do it right. So, it would prob-
ably be hand made, depending on the material it would
probably be cut by machine (CNC), but the rest would
have to be put together by me and/or somebody whohas more knowledge in that eld o then wiring, etc.

Future plans for Mecha:
The uture plans are almost all in the past now, so I have to rewritethis paragraph and come up with something new! ^
I have just released the Mecha6.3, and already have the rst entry
to the ourth series.
I also just sent a custom version o my own to celebrate the Chi-
nese year o the bunny and the sixth birthday o the toysRevil-blog
and it is available through his site now. As it is the year o the bunny,
I am planning to make it the year o the MechaBunny! I am hopping
or many more customs to come and maybe even another themed
series in the uture like the b/w one, plus the above mentioned spe-cial versions.

When did you discovered paper toys and what wasyour rst paper work?
Id been into vinyl toys or a while (not seriously though,
I wasnt going to drop 40 pound on a piece o plastic,
I have a amily to support.), when a I came across the
cardboy gures by Mark James, the ones with the vi-nyl body, and the packaging olded inside out to create
a cardboard head. Im not sure i the pixel ninja (game
o death) was my rst model, or i I made a model o
one his sneaker heads characters. Either way that wasthe denitive, Eureka moment when it clicked. Ater
that thanks to the internet, I came across the papercrat
community, mainly the highly complex eastern paper-
crat, which I respected as skilul, but didnt really appealto any Urban sensibilities I may have. Eventually I was
coming across more and more original character based
papercrat, until I contacted Ben the illustrator, to see i Icould do a custom or his speakerdog series. Ater that
custom, Ben recommended me to Matt Hawkins or theUrban Paper book, and rom there I linked in to Brian
Castelorte and the Nice Paper Toys network.
What place do the paper toys have in your life and
how much time do you dedicate to them?
For me, paper toys are just a creative distraction, an-
other outlet or ideas that I may have. Sometimes just
a orm o 3d doodling, other times a more planned ex-
ecution o an idea that has come rom elsewhere. I am
proud o the paperwork I have done, although I wouldsay I release less than 50% o what I do, whether that
is because I eel a piece isnt working, or because I loseinterest in it.
Your shapes are specic and very well studied. What
is the inuence of vinyl toys in your work?
An interest in vinyl toys may well have kick-started my
interest in papertoys, but I eel now that vinyl toys are
oversaturated, the quality control in designs has gonedown, and its only occasionally that one will catch my
eye. I am now more interested in what other papertoy
designers are coming up with, although I will always
have a sot spot or the Mad L gure, or me that em-bodies the total grati aesthetic.
What is your process of working? Do you work ondierent paper toys at the same time or you dont
move to another model before nishing the one
youre working on at the moment?
My usual working method consists o doodling away in
a sketchpad, occasionally Ill come up with a design that
I think might make a good paper toy (although I maynot be aiming to make a paper toy). The next step is to
build the model in 3DS max ( a 3D modelling package),
to see i it has a pleasing orm. At this point I discardloads o models as not good enough, or too complicat-
ed to build. I I like a model, I will then unold it in the3D program and add the tabs and old lines. Ater this I
will export the line art to Adobe Illustrator, and add thegraphics to the template, and size it to A4.
The only test ater that is to release them on to the in-
ternets.
How do you see your progress in all this years of
paper crafting?
I can denitely see a progression in my understanding
o paper, its limitations, and its possibilities, and as mycondence has grown, I eel able to make more com-

plex silhouettes, but make their construction simple.
What are the benets of sharing your creations, af-ter all the work you put in them?
The biggest benet, is the buzz you get knowing that
people liked the toy enough to build and download it.
Is customizing other peoples paper toys challeng-
ing you?
I nd customizing other peoples toys hard, as I justdont seem to have the time, and also I work all day in
a creative job (games artist), and sometimes the last
thing I eel like doing is more art when I get home. I
dont want to give some one a hal hearted custom, Ihave too much respect or the other designers to do
that. I also think that because I havent got a concrete
graphical style, my skinning work may not be as good, I
am more into the orm o designs.
What is the dierence between the works you shareand the works you would never share?
The only things I wouldnt share, are the models that
may impinge on another designers copyright, or dam-age their intel lectual property, such as the paper mad-L
I made.
Could you tell us something about your grati
background? What does grati mean to you andhow do you compare it to paper toys?
I rst got into grati about 1985 at the age o 13, ater
seeing the lm Stylewars, (I can honestly say that was
a lm that changed my lie), I was amazed at these art-
ists painting whole subway cars. Ater seeing this lm Ibegan to devour everything to do with hip hop culture.
I rst started writing with riends seriously about 1988,
although we were more interested in piecing than tag-
ging or bombing. It was my interest in grati that led to
me going to art school to study graphic design, by thistime I realised that I couldnt go out painting illegally,
as having turned 18 I would be open to ull prosecutionby the law, so I tried to channel my interests into other
directions.
Ater dropping out o a graphic design course in Bris-
tol, I worked various odd jobs until a riend put me onto a job at a computer games company. From 95 until
now thats what Ive been doing, though I would say
those ormative years writing grati still inuence ev-
erything I do to this day. I believe you can see it in theBBoy stance o most o my characters.
Your halfsharkalligatorhalfman is one of my fa-
vorites paper toys. How did you came up with thistoy?
The halsharkalligatorhalman is based on a charactercreated by Kool Kieth on his Doctor octagon album the
DR Octagynacologist its a character Ive been drawing
or years, I nally decided to make a paper toy o it. I
would denitely say the design is inuenced by the Sab
Kaze shark that eatures in the Subway Art book.
What paper toy are you most proud of and why?
I guess my avourite one has to be halsharkalligatorh-
alman, I eel his orm is just right or my style, Ive man-aged to capture the aggressive bboy stance in him, and
it look more complex than it is.
Do you follow whats happening in the world of pa-per toys? What do you think, what could change in
the future?
I regularly check into nicepapertoys.com, to see whats
happening within this part o the paper toy community,and also the blogs paperkrat, paperorest and paper-
cratparadise to get a wider overview o papercrat ingeneral. My biggest ear or papertoys is that they be-
come too big, and then we get people making them
just because its cool to be making them, rather than
because they love making them. Sort o what happenedwith street art, where it became cool to label yoursel a
street artist as a promotional tool. I already see some pa-

per toy designs that have nothing to do with the com-munity, and graphic design pricks getting paid or it,
when theres plenty o talented people in this commu-
nity who would like to make a living rom it. Although
having said that I know some people wont even knowa community exists.
Do you think its harder to start making paper toystoday, when most of basic shapes are already used
in many dierent ways, then it was when you start-ed?
It may be harder to be totally original, but i someone
has an idea or cool graphics, they should look as good
on a simple cube, as on some complex paper sculpture,
I mean look at dolly oblongs totem series, a simpleshape, but it has inspired some o the best, most cre-
ative graphics Ive seen on paper toys. I know some art-
ists may jealously guard some o their shapes, but I eel
i someone can take what Ive done and re use part o
it creatively then good luck to them. Just remember togive credit where its due, and no wholesale rip ofs. I did
nd someone had ripped of a yeti character that I haddone, slightly altered the shape, and they were passing
that of as their own.
On what paper toys are you working on at the mo-ment? What could we expect from you in the fu-ture?
I dont have any toys on the go at the moment, but thatdoesnt mean there are none on the horizon, my work-
ing method means, that when inspiration strikes itll
only take a ew days rom the initial idea to a nal model,
I like to work ast, it means I dont lose interest in a proj-ect. Im currently interested in pin-up art, tattoos, wood
block printing, zombies, samurais, traditional painting,
so any o these could turn up in uture designs, or may-be all in one design .

From Brussels with Love...Papertom exhibition
Stphane is an artist rom Belgium going by the name o Papertom. Be-
ore getting into designing papertoys he majored in Industrial Design and
has been working as an graphic-designer or 14 years. I began to old and
glue paper 2 years ago and then ound out that there was a huge commu-
nity o papertoy-passionates around the world, he says. Stphane was
ascinated by the mix o technic and the creation that the medium paper-toys oers, their low costs and the ease o sharing them via the internet.
On December 16th in Brussels at a Gallery called St-Mdard he started
his frst solo-exhibition. There he displayed his papertoys, but he also cre-
ated 4 cardboard giants made especially or this event and the gallery. Theconcept behind this Paper-Giants was massive characters with heavy ap-
pearance built with light materials. He made them expressionless to let
the people imagine their own stories about them. The invitations or thatevent were also something special, as a surprise or everyone there was
the template o one o the letters o the word Papertom on the back.
That way everybody could build their own papertoy and get into it as
well, Stphane says. He also made reduced versions o his Giantsor peo-ple to buy, so they have a kind o souvenir o the show. Also available was
a screenprint he made exclusively or the show o his cowboy-character
Bualo Tom.
About the experience o his frst own exhibition, he says: It was a great
experience or me to see the reaction o the people who went through it,and seeing smiles appear on the aces o the people who passed in ront
o the shop-window.
Stphanes uture plans involve experimenting with other materials as
well, while still creating papertoys.

How and when did you start making paper toys?
I started making paper toys close to three years ago.I rst learned about them several years prior; a riend
o mine built some Readymechs and brought them to
a get together or each o us to take home. I was asci-nated by them and downloaded all the templates but
or some reason I never built them. A ew years later I
watched an episode o Toy Break dedicated to paper
toys and saw all the great toys that were out there. Fromthe show I learned about NPT (Nicepapertoys.com) and
once I joined the site, I was hooked.
What is it about the medium that fascinates youmost?
The creativity, the communal aspect, the accessibility.
For artists and or collectors, whether youre designinga paper toy or building one, youre doing something
creative. I love that its not conned to just one person
or group o people or specic to a certain location. Any-one, anywhere can enjoy paper toys. And not only are
the toys easily accessible but I think most paper toy art-ists are as well. Paper toys have sort o become this cat-
alyst to a great online community where people share
their art.
Whats more challenging for you, skin or model de-
sign?
For me, model design is denitely more challenging.
Thats why I love to do customs, the mechanics have al-ready been worked out. All I have to do is the un part,
decorate the model.
Is there any dierence in your approach when do-
ing customs? Do you choose them or they choose
you?
My approach to a custom really depends on the model
itsel. Some shapes are very specic so I build a char-
acter around them. Other shapes are a bit broad and
become a springboard or a remix so to speak. Some-times the name o a model can dictate the design. The
MechaBunnies or the ye-boT or example, it seemedtting to create robotic characters. As ar as whether
I choose the customs or them choosing me, it can be
a little bit o both. With the IMPS customs, what Jason
Harlan (Harlancore) had created with Series Nine reallyspoke to me. I ell in love with the characters and the
theme. I was so inspired that I had to make my own lit-
tle monsters.
Have you got any paper toy project you would liketo realize, but you cant for some reasons?
Lucky, that hasnt happened yet. You have to tell your-sel that youre smarter than the paper. You control it, it
doesnt control you. Glue on the other hand
What are the benets of sharing your creations, af-
ter all the work you put in them?
Being able to inspire people to make art. Its always
great to see people build or customize a paper toy Ive
created. Ive also enjoyed being able to connect with
paper toy ans rom all over the world. O course, havingthe opportunity to connect with amazing artists who I
admire and respect is priceless. Receiving positive eed-
back is also great. It arms that what I do has a purposeor has made an impact in some way.
Do you share any other creations?
Paper toys and a ew desktop wallpapers are the onlyworks I have online or people to download or ree.
How do you earn your corn and would you prefer if
you could make your living out of paper toys?
Im a designer/illustrator at a small design company
on Maui. I think in a perect world, it would be great to
make a living out o paper toys. I think the ideal situa-

tion would be that paper toy artists or paper toys in general would be re-
garded similar to conventional art. We would be able to do gallery shows
and sell the pieces (one-ofs) or a air amount o money. Or i we werecommissioned to do commercial work, we would have creative reedom to
do what we wanted. Who knows, it could happen some day.
Did paper crafting enhanced your wider reputation as a designer?
Most denitely! Never would I have thought that doing something that I
love to do or un would bring me the recognition that Ive received. Its soawesome and Im truly grateul. Im happy to make art that others beside
mysel can enjoy.
What paper toy artists inspire you most?
There are so many! There are a ew artists whose art I really connect to -
Sal Azad, Jason Harlan (Harlancore), and Jack Hankins (Horrorwood). Im
always drawn in by their styles and the details they put into each piece. Ilove that sort o thing. O course there is the always inspiring Matt Hawk-
ins, Brian Castleorte, Marshall Alexander, Shin Tanaka, Maarten Janssens
(3EyedBear), Christopher Bonnette (Macula), Dolly Oblong, Tougui, MarkoZubak, Johanes (Saltnpaper), Nick Knite, Matthijs C. Kamstra (mck) and
Bryan (Paper Foldables) to name a ew. All the wonderul artists that Ive
had the opportunity to collaborate with I really could go on and on.

Do you think that paper toy boom is still to come
or its going to remain more or less like nowadays?
I dont know. Speaking as someone rom within the
community, Id say paper toys are booming. There are al-
ways new toys and artists popping up on NPT. Its greatto see more people joining in. I think with the books
released by Matt Hawkins, Brian Castleorte and Louis
Bou, more people around the world will learn about pa-
per toys.
If you ever stop making paper toys, for what rea-
son would it be?
For me to stop making paper toys, my hands would lit-
erally have to all of. Preerably while building a paper
toy.
What are your projects for the future?
I plan to continue working on a new series o robotscalled Zealot Guard. I guess I have a thing or robots
that I never knew about until I started making paper
toys. There will denitely be more customs and maybea ew other things so keep an eye out.
If you got the opportunity to fulll you dreams,
how would it look like and where in the world wouldit be?
I would love to travel some day. Visit several countries,
rock out at some concerts and hopeully participate inan international paper toy gathering were I could meet
up with other paper toy art ists and ans. That would be
awesome.

For those who dont know, who stands behind the
Cubeecraft and what do you do?
My name is Chris Beaumont. I am an artist living in
Brooklyn, New York. When Im not working on Cubee-
crat I oversee game development on a special projectat the Sesame Workshop.
How long have you been papercrafting and what
attracted you to this way of expression?
I can remember making little paper dice in elementary
school, making a rocket pack out o a cereal box ater Isaw The Rocketeer... Ive generally always been keen on
crat projects especially i they were un to do. The rst
paper model I remember making was a StarFox Arwing
that came in an issue o Nintendo Power - I remember itbeing a bit rustrating to assemble...
craft paper toy and what was your rst idea behind
this shape?
I had come up with the idea back in college o creatinga designer paper toy that was easy to assemble. The
idea came to me during a packaging design class while
at Pratt. We had a project where we had to choose roma number o objects and create a piece o packaging or
it. I chose matches and built a matchbox which lookedlike a little retruck. It had a bay in the back that dis-

awesome customs I was seeing online were one-ofs. I
thought it would be cool to nd a way to do toys onthe cheap and also inject some crat into it. By the time
I gured out what I wanted to do though I had ound
there were already a bunch o olks doing this with pa-
per toys - very inspirational! Thinking back I think the
rst ones I saw were the Ready Mech series.I wanted to make something simple and remembered
the dice I had built back in elementary school. I alsothought it would be good to make it glue-less some-
how so theres wasnt a lot o materials or investment
involved.
I went through a lot o designs - diferent proportions,sizes, ways o connecting pieces - but ultimately settled
on the one you see on the site.
What success did this character brought you and
how did you achieved it?
When I started the site I really just did it or mysel... it
was a challenge to do something non-work related andI challenged mysel I would do a new one each week. I
wanted to share with riends without spamming their
e-mail with look what I did! every week so I put the sitetogether.

Is putting free paper toys on your site enough forself promotion, or you have to work it out the other
ways as well?
Meeting people and building a network are very im-
portant i you are an artist. The site certainly helps but Ido it more or un than anything else. Im happy people
like the work but at the end o the day i I wasnt enjoy-ing it I wouldnt do it.
There are really lots of Cubeecraft customs on your
site. How many models have you made?
There are a lot o great guest artists with work on the
site - in act about 1/3 o the site is guest artist work.Ive personally done something close to 300 at this
point.
Is your Cubeecraft available for customization? Do
you plan an artist series?

Yes - there is a blank template available on the site, but
it is not in the most obvious place. This hasnt stopped
people rom doing their own customs - in act there is
an entire category or Cubeecrat customs on Devian-tart.com. I have been working on more originals lately,
and there is a stable o originals rom a variety o artists
already available. Original designs trickle into my mail-box but I dont really try to put together a series.
I am planning a couple o shows later this year and willlikely be putting out a call to artists very soon.
Lots of your designs are inspired by video games.
What role do the games have in your life and what
are your favorites?
I dont watch a lot o TV, I dont drink or do any drugs... I
just play a lot o video games. I have a sot spot or the
NES/SNES era. I currently play a lot o Xbox Live and iOS
games.
Is your paper toy work based strictly on this char-acter or you make also other types of paper toys?
I have been branching out lately doing more custom
templates. In act I have a book I worked on with a pa-
per engineer named Michael Caputo coming out later
this year that is almost all original templates - Sponge-bob Squarepants: Spongebob and Friends.
Other recent non-template work includes the NESR.O.B., Robot Unicorn Attack piece I did or Adult Swim,
and the Grrrnade piece I recently released.I plan to do a lot more non-template work. Well see
how it goes. Maybe Ill start another site, ha!
Looking from commercial aspect, is making papertoys protable for you?
The site generates some ad revenue - certainly enoughto cover the loty bandwidth the site generates. Ive got
a lot o reelance work rom my paper toy work, in actI just nished three books (Batman, Green Lantern and
Spongebob Squarepants)... but honestly I dont think Illbe quitting my day job anytime soon. I think once it
becomes work, it will eel like work and I wont enjoy it
anymore. I know o at least one other successul paper
toy designer who recently quit taking on commercialprojects because o this, and I can totally see where hes
coming rom. Generally I only pick up the jobs I think Ill
What is your process of creating? What kind of tools
do you use? Do you construct all of your toys?
I have to have an idea or be inspired in some way and
rom there I start sketching. I always work out how things
will look with pencil and paper beore I set to work onanything digitally. Creating the art in the template or
creating a new template is usually done in Photoshopor Illustrator.
Since you share your work for free, what kind of
permissions do you use for it? Could copying digital
material be considered a theft?
I ask that people do not sell the work, I ask that i you use
the blank template you keep the Cubeecrat logo, URL
etc on there. Certainly copying digital material could be
considered a thet.
Do you enjoy customizing other peoples paper
toys?
I have only done a handul and Ive never released them.
I do like it - especially trying to nd a way to do some-
thing with it the original artist may not have intended.

I would like to do more original work. I have 2 shows lined up or later in the year
that will be excellent excuses to work on new original pieces.
Can we ever expect any rounded paper models from you?
I I had a good idea or something that would call or it denitely - but the orm I ul-
timately went with was to me a balance o aesthetic and ease o construction. I havebeen tempted to do some more complex things lately so i I get the time I might give
it a shot.
How do you see the future of paper toys?
I believe they are becoming more popular every day.
