Introduction

The primary purpose of the teachers pack is to help both teachers and students alike to get as much as possible out of their participation in the interactive performance of GULLIVER.

The pack has been designed as a tool to help students understand the play, learn new vocabulary and improve their listening and speaking skills. Once they have done the activities, students will understand better both how the story develops and the lines the actors deliver so they will get more enjoyment out of the performance. This CD contains some introductory material where youll find texts corresponding to the plot synopsis and the characters, some dialogues from the play and the original songs performed in the play. Also, youll find some suggested activities we recommend you to do before the play, pre play activities and some post-play activities which have been designed to check if students have understood the play correctly. The activities also enable the students vocabulary, expressions and grammatical structures to improve.

Pre-play and post-play activities include instructions for the teacher and the corresponding student worksheets, as long as the activity requires them. Some of the activities have an extension part (extension activity) which makes it possible to study the contents in depth, depending on the groups ability. Both the introductory material and the suggested activities may require the corresponding audio material to make better use of them. In this case, we provide you with the corresponding track number from the audio CD.

A new feature includes the possibility for teachers to see the choreography of a song on our website and therefore offers the opportunity of teaching it to the students prior to the show, thus allowing them to fully enjoy the dance on the day of the show.

Conceptual contents

ListeningVarious activities such as listening and repeating

words as well as having to fill in the gaps to certain dialogues and songs, helping to sharpen the students ear and encourage them to repeat all they hear in English.

Reading and writing There are numerous moments where students

have to read and understand the sentences and dialogues within this dossier. It helps them to hone in on their reading skills and then gives them the opportunity through writing to practice what they already know as well as developing a greater knowledge of the language.

ConversationThe main focus when learning a language should

be on the ability to communicate. Here, students are given the opportunity to develop this important skill by involving them in dialogues, conversations, songs, and pair-work set specifically to encourage conversation in English. At this stage students should have already developed a certain level of understanding and speaking to enable them to deploy their first English communicative manifestations, and to consolidate the basic grammatical categories of this language, and ensure their awareness and approach to the Anglo-Saxon cultural tradition. The teaching materials in GULLIVER will allow you to study the following conceptual contents in depth:

- Simple Present tense. Auxiliary verbs in negatives and questions. Third person singular.

- Past simple tense. Verb conjugation. Affirmative and negative sentences. Used to.

- Third conditional sentences, prepositions, the passive, Present Perfect tenses, etc.

- Personality Adjectives (nervous, impulsive, knowledgeable).

- Phrasal Verbs (to end up, to get on).

- Vocabulary: History, geography, traveling, cultural knowledge and other useful vocabulary mentioned in the story.

- Irregular verbs, sentence formation.

The educational interests of this activity will focus on helping students start developing the four basic skills of any foreign language: listening, speaking, reading and writing. All this with an approach based on communication, which aims to encourage students, involving them in dialogues, conversations, songs, etc, and other forms of communication that are essential to the teaching and learning of a foreign language process. At this stage students should develop a certain level of understanding and speaking to enable them to deploy their first English communicative manifestations, and to consolidate the basic grammatical categories of this language, and ensure their awareness and approach to the Anglo-Saxon cultural tradition. Plot synopsis

Its the year 1699 and the young Lemuel Gulliver, a doctor by profession, decides to sail and travel to other countries in search of adventure and fortune

One stormy night at sea, his ship is wrecked. Gulliver is an excellent swimmer and swims for many miles before he reaches shore. Gulliver is very tired and decides to sleep. He will look for food after having sufficient rest.

Gulliver is shipwrecked in the land of Lilliput. When he wakes up, the sun is beating down upon him. He tries to move, but he cant. His hair, hands, legs and body are tied to the ground. He sees a little person running around him. Her name is Lilo. When Gulliver asks her where he is, she says: You are in the land of Lilliput, giant; I am a Lilliputian. Gulliver laughs. I am not a giant, he says. You are to me, she replies. Gulliver laughs again when she tells him that Lilliput is the most amazing place in the whole world and Lilo gets very upset, although she has a bad temper anyway.

She offers to help Gulliver fix his boat to try to return to his native England. When the boat is finished, Gulliver, thanks Lilo for showing him her wonderful land and for helping him fix his boat and he sets sail again.

There is another stormy night and Gulliver is shipwrecked again. But this time he is washed up on a different island. Everything on the island seems very big compared to him.

He hears a deep booming voice asking him who he is and what he is doing there. Again, same as before in Lilliput, Gulliver asks where he is, and the deep booming voice, which belongs to a giant named Goliath, laughs and answers: You are in Brobdingnag!. Brobdingnag? Where is that?, Gulliver asks amazed. The most wonderful land in the whole world, replies Goliath. That is what Lilo said, says Gulliver. Lilo?, Goliath asks. Yes, the Lilliputian, Gulliver explains. After a while Goliath tells Gulliver to stop talking and says he is very hungry. Gulliver says he is hungry too and asks Goliath what there is to eat in Brobdingnag. Goliath tells him that he, Gulliver, is on the giants menu. Gulliver doesnt panic and tells Goliath he

can prepare something even better. Then he sets about making a sleeping potion to make all the giants sleep so he can escape from Brobdingnag. He fixes up his boat and leaves the island.

After many days at sea and no more shipwrecks, Gulliver follows a giant bird all the way back to England.

Finally, he arrives home and tells all the people about his wonderful adventure.

This is an exciting story told by two curious sailors who collect all kinds of objects from the bottom of the sea and take care of them at the sea museum. With them, you will find out all about Gulliver, the sinking of his ship and his accidental arrival in the distant lands of Lilliput and Brobdingnag.

Join him as he meets the strange inhabitants of these two worlds, the Lilliputians and the Giants, a race of very suspicious beings so different to Gulliver. Join Gulliver as all his great adventures come to life.

Meet the characters

James Cook, the explorerHe is a famous explorer who collects all kinds of objects

from the sea. He navigates around the world on his boat always looking for what he calls sea treasures. Thanks to this navigation, he has found, among other things, the Pirate Blackbeards treasure, the shell containing the Little Mermaids voice, a tooth from the Loch Ness Monster, Captain Nemos wet suit, a violin from a musician travelling on the Titanic, the doors of the submerged Atlantis... And a bottle containing a very mysterious piece of treasure... But what does it contain?

Matt, the sailorHe works in the Sea Museum with Clare and is responsible

for collecting and classifying all the objects that James Cook sends them every day. Matt is clueless but funny and he loves to hear a good story, especially one concerning the sea and all its mysteries.

Clare, the sailorAlong with Matt, she works at the Sea Museum. She is

efficient, intelligent and knows all the treasures the museum has, but also knows the history of each piece perfectly. She loves her job and has a good relationship with Matt, who she is a little in love with.

GulliverHe is the true protagonist of the story. He is a doctor

by profession and decides to sail his boat in search of treasure. He experiences an amazing adventure when he is shipwrecked and wakes up in Lilliput. His second shipwreck takes him to Brobdingnag, the land of the giants. Gulliver is brave and always ready for adventure. Finally, he gets back home to England.

Lilo, the LilliputianShe is an inhabitant of the small country of Lilliput, i.e., she

is a Lilliputian. She has a bad temper and is always angry and in a bad mood. But even being so small she is very strong and agile. She loves horseriding and her job in Lilliput is in the personal guard of the King of Lilliput. She is not afraid of Gulliver, although he is much bigger than her.

Goliath, the GiantHe lives in Brobdingnag, the land of the giants. He is a

giant with a deep voice, but moves very slowly. He is always hungry and eats everything he finds, even people. Logically, Gulliver is very afraid of him.

It was found in the area of Teachs Hole and consists of a chest full of gold coins and precious objects, like necklaces, rings, bracelets, candlesticks, glasses... - that belonged to Edward Thatch, better known as Blackbeard, one of the most feared pirates in history. This pirate was popular because of the peculiar garb he wore when making attacks. It has prominent teeth, but it is unknown whether it is dangerous or not.

OPTIONAL: To prepare a stronger potion, add the other dried herbs (oat straw and hop flowers) to a bowl and pour over the water.

Put a label and date on the jar, so everyone knows its a giants sleeping potion i.e. GIANTS SLEEPING POTION 01/01/2016.

Fasten the lid tightly and store somewhere away from direct sunlight.

Leave this to infuse for about 20 minutes.

The aim of this activity is to give students the chance to practice affirmative and negative sentences. Most of the sentences are in the 3rd person singular, so students will have plenty of practice with the s.

Explain to the students that all the statements are false and that they can be corrected by simply changing the verb from negative to affirmative, or vice versa.

Draw students attention to the first sentence which has been done as an example and ask them to say what has changed (there is an auxiliary verb to make the negative and the main verb has no s. Remind students that no auxiliary verb is used with the verbs to be or can. In this activity we propose that each of the students imagine they are going on a spectacular trip by boat and, due to bad weather, are shipwrecked on a deserted island. They have the opportunity to write a letter and put it in a bottle and then throw it into the sea ... What would they put? Who would they write the letter to?

Gulliver reaches Lilliput and meets Lilo, the Lilliputian, who he notices is wearing a peculiar hat.

We suggest you make your own Lilliputian hat using a sheet of newspaper; to do this, simply follow the instructions below.

You can then also add colour to the hat by painting or colouring it.

Bring your new hat to the show to support Lilliput.

Fold the paper in the middle.

Then fold both ends inwards.

Make the bottom part by simply folding

Stick the sides with a little bit of adhesive tape or glue so that it does not come apart.

Heres your Lilliputian hat; colour it how you like and bring it to the show.

Extra-Activity 3:Gulliver the game

We invite you to test your knowledge about Gulliver playing Gulliver the game. It is a singular version of the traditional game of the goose, in which only your command of the vocabulary related to the play is used. The first thing you have to do is to assemble the game board, which is divided into four parts. Once the game board is ready, get into groups of 2 - 4 players and appoint a spokesperson for each group. The teacher will explain to the students the instructions corresponding to each space, and, when needed, will choose and ask the students the questions.

Rules of the game:

Throw using only one dice

The objective of the game is to move spaces forward according to the throw of the dice and to follow the instructions given for each space. To win you must be the first one to reach england. The game board pattern is a spiral of 40 fields, numbered from 1 - 40. 24 Fields have special hazards or benefits for players who land on them:

From boat to boat: (there are 8 fields with a boat) whenever you land on one of these fields you are in the right direction, move to the next boat and roll again.

Lilliputian target: fields 6 and 23. Good shot!! You can move to field 23 (and vice versa) then roll again.

The water well: field 15. If you land on this field, you lose a turn.

Brobdingnag: field 18... You are lost. You cantt play again until another player goes past that space.

The dungeon: field 27. Bad luck. Whenever you land on this field you lose two turns

Goliath the giant: field 33. He is the evil character in the story. Bumping into him is the worst thing that could have happened to you. You go back to field 1.

England: you are in england, but you need to arrive using the exact number required on the dice. If you overthrow the required number, you must move backwards the surplus number of spaces.

Question fields: there are 14 question fields. Whenever you land on one of them, you will have to answer correctly a question that your teacher will ask you about the vocabulary in the play. If you answer correctly, you can roll again, but if you dont, you wont move and you will have to pass your turn to the next team.

Note: There are more than 100 words of vocabulary for the teacher. All the words are in english with their corresponding translations in spanish. Its up to the teacher to decide which words to choose as there are different levels of difficulty and to ask the students for their translations in english or in spanish.
