CHAIRMAN’S REPORT 2016/2017 It is a pleasure to present to you the Annual Report on the Rynpark Association for the Aged for the period ended 31 March 2017. Please take time to read through the report as it contains valuable information regarding the operations of Rynpark and the different Sub-Committees Chairman’s reports, as well as the legislative/regulatory changes that impact Rynpak and possibly you as a member. Changes to the format of the Rynpark Finance Report In the effort to communicate more effectively the Board decided that the financial information will be communicated on a half yearly basis to members and published in all the parks. The report itself has also been restructured after valuable input from members, the Finance Sub-Committee and Auditors to ensure that relevant information is provided to all our members without duplicating information that may be contained in other communications. Operation of the Association As in the past, we remain pleased with the general service delivered to our members and to Rynpark by all the Service Providers. Rynpark Management and the Board will continue to identify aspects of service delivery where we can improve in order to provide all stakeholders of Rynpark with a pleasant experience. I want to acknowledge the valuable input of the Board’s Sub-Committees, Finance, Property and Maintenance, Security and Gardens, as well as Health Care which deal with most aspects of governance, operations, finance and communications of Rynpark. We also acknowledge the service by our executive and management team who raised the bar the past year and we know we will see another increase in service delivery by them. A BIG thank you on behalf of the Rynpark Board and members. Acknowledgements The role of a Board member is very onerous, especially in a significant large and complex retirement association such as Rynpark Association for the Aged. I would therefore like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to my fellow Board members for the acumen and enthusiasm they displayed during their tenure as Board members. Frikkie (FJ) de Jager Chairman

EXECUTIVE MANAGER’S REPORT 2016/2017 During the 2016/2017 financial year the board, management and staff have all worked diligently towards our vision to be the preferred Life Style choice for Retired Citizens with every action directed to improve the wellbeing of Residents in Rynpark Association for the Aged. In order to achieve our goal of becoming one of South Africa’s best places of retirement we need to make bold strides and continue our research towards best practice in the industry. It should be evident that the board and management will not tolerate mediocrity or any complacency and consequently the quality of our staff and service providers need be of the highest standing. In this regard, we have continued with people development through implementing a full time training position and we motivate and improve staff performance through various training workshops and seminars. We have made changes to our organisational structure within the nursing and the maintenance departments and are proud of the improving results. Colette Jansen van Vuuren was promoted to her position as Nursing Services Manager and she instantly unleashed new energy with a spectrum of new initiatives. The 2017/2018 financial year will see three new Professional Nurses in Care Coordinator positions that will take leadership of our frail care facilities. The Maintenance Manager will be supported by three supervisors within the different parks. We are excited with the prospect of building a dedicated activities and recreational team through the work of a new occupational therapist assistant. The management model of working with various sub–committees supported by the board capture the essence of Rynpark. In addition to the Board sub–committees the Park Representatives with their own park member committees actively encourage optimum collaboration. Well done to all the sub–committees and a special welcome to Ella Kapp, new chairperson for Rynpark 5. Capital projects approved for the next fiscal year amount to R 2,3 million. The Capital Budget for the three years 2017 – 2020 makes provision for a further R 6.7 million. We are faced with a record number of new retirement facilities in our sector and in response we should ensure comprehensive value through well maintained structures. Between April 2016 and March 2017 more than 1 100 individuals called Rynpark their home. We have another 300 plus persons waiting to be part of this dynamic retirement association. We must seize the moment and not let one opportunity slip by as together we seek an improved future for Rynpark Association for the Aged. Marius H. Botha Executive Manager

FINANCE COMMITTEE: Chairperson Les Trollip It is very pleasing to report that Rynpark realised a surplus of R 8,688,346 for the twelve months ended 31 March 2017 versus R 4,837,523 for the previous year. Whilst Rynpark is strictly a non-profit organisation, this surplus ensures that much – needed maintenance and capital expenditure can be proceeded with. During the past financial year, the Board decided on certain accounting amendments:

· Previously the “Sale of Cottages” (new Life Right Agreements) were recognised as “Income” only when the cottage was occupied by the new member. Note this had no bearing on cash flow but did reflect as a current liability in the Balance Sheet. This is no longer the case, the sale is now brought to revenue immediately the contract is signed and paid for by the member. The effect of this is an increase in revenue of R 2.8m in the sale of 41 cottages this past financial year, 6 of which strictly relate to the previous financial year.

· Secondly, the refund due to “First–time buyers” in Rynpark 5 and 6, as and when they exit the scheme, has now been brought to account and is now reflected as a liability in the Balance Sheet and is no longer regarded as a Contingent Liability. The effect of this is a reduction in revenue of R 725,750.

· As regards short–term investments, we are pleased to advise that where in the past, call monies were earning a mere 1.5% pa, these funds are now invested in a new product (Liquidity Plus) which yields 6.5% pa on daily basis.

In closing, the Board would like to convey special thanks to the Financial/Accounting team ably directed by Jackie Smit and also the Auditors (Baillie, Koseff & Grobler) and specifically Nico Grobler who is always available for guidance and advice to Rynpark.

PROPERTY COMMITTEE: Chairperson Terence Bezuidenhout It has been a very busy year with a new Maintenance Manager starting and a record number of Life Right Sales in Rynpark. The upgrading of Snyman Home and Living Inn was completed in August 2016 and both facilities are now fully occupied. Water tanks and Generators were added to Snyman Home and Harmony Home during the year and they are of huge value to our Frail Care Facilities. The task of upgrading our Life Right houses have been made easier by caring outside Contractors, working with the new residents to transform their new homes to their requests. The Contractor who is busy with waterproofing of houses and repairs to the outside wall at Rynpark 7 is doing an excellent job. We have sold all the available units and still maintained a waiting list of over 300 names. The popularity of our Retirement Village and what it offers to the retired community speaks for its self.

SEKURITEITSKOMITEE: Voorsitter Willie Olivier

Gedurende die Finansiële jaar was die Komitee betrokke by verskeie sekuriteits

opgradeeringsprojekte.

waghuisies ge-installeer.

ambulans dienste ongeveer ‘n verdere 35 minute neem.

1) RP 1 hek B Waghuis;

2) Kameras met infrarooi nagvisie en zoom-kapasiteit vir alle hekke;

3) Elektriese motors vir alle hekke;

4) Elektriese heiningpaaltjies instandhouding.

GARDEN COMMITTEE: C N Webber & Willie Olivier

Besides plants like flowers and shrubs, our larger trees are a priceless asset.

1. What is a large tree? We will regard any tree taller than 5 m to be a large tree.

2. What type of trees do we want to preserve? Any tree that contributes to the beauty and

richness of the Rynpark environment, provided it is not on the Alien Invader Species List.

Desirable trees include both indigenous & exotic trees, although Rynpark would like to

encourage more indigenous tree plantings in the future.

3. What is an alien invader plant? Since 1983 the South African Department of Agriculture (Act 43 of 1983) has classified undesirable plants in this country in published laws with three schedules recognised, viz: Schedule 1: listed plants are illegal in South Africa and must, by law, be eradicated. This

list includes oleanders and others found in Rynpark. Schedule 2: listed plants can only be grown in South Africa if a licence is obtained from the

Dept of Agriculture. Our gum, pine & wattle timber plantations managed by Mondi & Sappi belong in this group.

Schedule 3: listed plants may not be replaced once they die. Jacarandas that beautify cities like Pretoria & Johannesburg fall into this category.

In the past year attention was given to various aspects relating to trees & shrubs in Rynpark

grounds. A start was made to removing some of the alien (Schedule 1) plants that grow in

Rynpark. Eighteen Oleander plants were removed, many from Rynpark 2 & 3. These,

according to law, have to be eliminated from South Africa. A continuing procedure will occur

in coming years to rid alien listed plants from Rynpark to make us law-complient.

4. When will Rynpark eradicate a large tree? Only if there is a good reason (see below) for this, e.g.: · If a tree in listed as an Alien Invader Species in South Africa. This is required by law. · When a large tree interferes with the functioning of the solar geyser efficiency. · When a part of a tree grows over a cottage/building & therefore poses a potential

risk/threat to the building. · If the roots of the tree cause damage to structures, e.g. walls, roads, paving, pipes etc. · Any other reason regarded as sufficiently important, when discussed by the RP Board, to

warrant the trimming or felling of such a tree. As a matter of policy though, Rynpark will resist removing large trees.

5. What is the benefit of large trees in Rynpark? · Trees produce oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide from the air. · They produce shade to moderate excessively high surface temperatures during hot

weather and they counteract excessively low temperatures during freezing weather. · They provide essential shelter and nesting places for wildlife. · Tree roots contribute significantly to binding the soil, thereby resisting soil loss by erosion. · They contribute significantly to the beauty of an area. · Falling leaves enrich the organic and nutrient content of the soil. · Leaf mulch preserves soil moisture for longer. Action will also be taken to improve road visibility within the parks where plants have grown

large & impede visibility.

HEALTH COMMITTEE: Chairperson DR Phill Erasmus

According to the WHO's World Report on Ageing and Health, the proportion of South Africa's population aged 60 years or older will double from 7.7% to 15.4% of the country's total population over the next 35 years. Presently, the number of South Africans 60 years or older sits at around 4.209 million people. In 2050, this figure will rise to 10.06 million people. The WHO estimates that 38.4% of South Africans between the ages of 65 and 74 have limitations in eating, bathing, dressing, getting in and out of bed, or using the toilet. The growth in life expectancy offers new opportunities but it also creates challenges for the future. According to Rowe (1991), the health of older people has been approached from two different perspectives. The biomedical gerontological and geriatrics model, commonly held by physicians and other medical personnel, defines health in terms of the mechanisms and treatment of age-related diseases and the presence or absence of disease. The functional model, on the other hand, defines health in terms of older persons level of functioning. Health in the elderly is best measured in terms of functioning. Degree of fitness rather than extent of pathology, may be used as a measure of the amount of services the elderly will need. Most of the diseases that afflict older persons are the so-called lifestyle diseases, conditions like lung cancer, diabetes and heart disease, which are strongly linked to risk factors such as cigarette smoking, poor nutrition, lack of regular exercise and chronic stress. Simple preventative measures can significantly reduce the negative impact of lifestyle diseases on older people. The highest rates of accidental death and injury occur among older people. Relatively simple and inexpensive accident-prevention measures can significantly reduce the risk of accidental injury and death among older people. Dementia is a syndrome, usually of a chronic or progressive nature, caused by a variety of brain illnesses that affect memory, thinking, behavior and ability to perform everyday activities. The number of people living with dementia worldwide is currently estimated at 47 million and is projected to increase to 75 million by 2030. The number of cases of dementia are estimated to almost triple by 2050. The rights of older persons need to be respected.

NURSING SERVICES MANAGER: Colette Jansen van Vuuren The Health Care Team is committed to provide quality care to focus on holistic caregiving addressing the physical, psychological, and spiritual needs as one. Rynpark Health Care Services has appointed three Care Coordinators who are committed to deliver quality health care that is provided by a professional workforce, and health services that are safe, comprehensive, continuous and respectful of the residents we serve. We understand that our Residents do not just need assistance with the physical aspect of daily living, but need assistance with their emotional needs as well. An Occupational Therapist Assistant was appointed to lead our Lifestyle team, she was joined by two new Lifestyle Planners to focus on culture change and enhancing the Eden Alternative Principles and thereby preventing loneliness, helplessness and boredom. A special care unit was opened in Harmony Home to address the care needs of our residents with impaired mental capacity. The Fountain Garden was created especially for our special residents to address their wondering in a safe and secure environment. The Aviary at Rynpark 6 has been extended for the amusement and pleasure of the residents. Care homes are not only places of work but are also homes for our residents. It is therefore important that they are pleasant places where the freedom and dignity of residents are respected, and where everyone’s health and safety is sensibly and effectively managed. Health and Safety is our main concern and we show our commitment in partnership with Ekurhuleni Fire Department by Emergency Evacuations drills at regular intervals. Power is vital, two permanent standby generators are backup power systems that were installed as part of the facility’s power strategy. These will automatically activate seconds after a power failure, and shut itself off once the utility source is restored. The generators were installed at Harmony and Snyman Home. It was necessary for the Care Centers to have access to it in order to continually maintain high quality of care for our residents. Our new Trainer will ensure that our nursing staff are learning new skills that can improve rendered care, reduce accidents, build confidence and create a better working environment. An investment in our employees’ skills is an investment in our Association. Our clinic staff provides primary care that is a comprehensive range of curative and preventative interventions, friendly faces and welcoming attitudes show our residents the love we have for them and our dedication in providing excellent healthcare. My most sincere appreciation goes to the Health Care Team who are dedicated to providing compassionate care.

OPERATIONS MANAGER: Andries van Zyl

Our Open Garden Day was definitely a highlight, organized by Rynpark 4 residents, involving all the other parks and personnel. Our contractors also contributed to the day. This event is of immense value to Rynpark as it allows people from outside to see our beautiful facilities.

Christmas lunch was again very successful with all personnel participating in the preparations. Other special events were the opening of the Fountain Garden and the garden at Snyman Home. This just shows the generosity and commitment of our residents.

Generators were installed at Rynpark 6 Harmony Home and Rynpark 4 Snyman Home as emergency back up. Water tanks have been installed at Rynpark 4 Snyman Home and Rynpark 6 Harmony Home for emergency back up. Maintenance managed to work down a substantial backlog, and I want to thank every member of the team for their effort.

Our Park Representative Committees are working well and have improved the communication immensely. My thanks to every committee member for their support and guidance.

We have focused more on Health and Safety and have upgraded our fire fighting equipment. We have also given First Aid and Fire Fighting training to our employees. Emergency evacuations were done in the care centers. We are in the process of rolling out evacuation procedures in the parks with the help of the Park Committees.

Fedics is our catering contractor providing service to our care centres, they appointed a new contract manager Ilze Reed. Rencharm is keeping Rynpark facilities clean and has appointed Sibongile Humalo as contract manager. Our residents are kept safe by URM with excellent access control.

CMS our response unit delivers excellent service. Our panic buttons are tested regularly and more of our residents are making use of the cellphone call system also available. The electric fence is monitored by AAA alarms and kept in working condition. The security cameras are kept in working condition by maintenance. Tip Top our garden service contractor keeps our lawns neat and trees and shrubs trimmed.

Our telephone systems are now looked after by SPOC. We are looking at cable repairs or replacements that may be needed to get the system to optimal performance.

At Rynpark we face new challenges everyday with the knowledge that we have excellent leadership on our Board and Management team with personnel that always go the extra mile. I am proud to be part of the Rynpark family.

‘n Jaar waarin daar so baie hoogte punte en uitdagings was.
