IEVADS
un pašaudzināšanas kā izglītības līdzekļu atbilsme laikmeta prasībām ir tikusi izvērtēta visos laikos;
neilgtspējīgas izglītības paradigmas analīze tiek veikta I.Salītes (Salīte, 2008, 2015, Pipere, Veisson
sistēmas noslēgšanās, atteikšanās no dimaniskas attīstības, egocentrisma apliecinājums,
apzināts savas pastāvēšanas galīgums (apzinoties to, ir vieglāk būt godīgam), tiek kopts ķermenis.
Lasot tekstus un veidojot precīzu izteikumu (rakstot), skolēns mācās iepazīt sevi un precīzi paust
savu viedokli, atsakoties no sociāli marķētām klišejām.
laureāta I.Prigožina (Пригожин, 1960, 1985, 2001, 2005) izstrādāto pētniecisko pieeju.
1) personības un patērētāju sabiedrības attieksmes aktualizējuši Ž.Bodrijārs (Bodrijārs, 2000;
Baudrillard 1998; Бодрийяр, 1999, 2000 A, 2000 B, 2000 C, 2000 D, 2000 E, 2003, 2006 A, 2006 B,
2007, 2012), P. Burdje (Burdieu, Wacqant, 1992; Бурдье 2002, 2004, 2005, 2007), T. van Deiks
(Ван Дейк 1989, 2013) un I.Iļjins (Ильин, 2008);
2) diskursa un pašrūpju filosofiskais aspekts atspoguļots M.Fuko (Фуко, 1994, 1996A, 1996B,
1998A, 1998B, 2004, 2005A, 2005B, 2007A, 2007B, 2010A, 2010B, 2011A, 2011B; Fuko
2001),T. van Deika (Ван Дейк 1989, 2013), Ž. Otjē – Revju (Отъе-Ревю, 1999), P.Serio
(Серио, 1999), A.Fjodorova (Федоров, 2004), L.Dž. Filipsa un M.V.Jorgensa (Филипс, &
6
darbos;
3) personības un valodas attieksmes atspoguļotas M.Heidegera (Heidegers, 1998; Heidegger, 1967;
Хайдеггер, 2000, 2001) filosofijas koncepcijā;
J.Kristeva (Kristeva, 1987, 1988; Кристева, 2003, 2004), Ž.Lakāns (Лакан, 1995, 1997, 1999,
2000, 2002, 2004, 2006A, 2006B, 2008, 2009, 2010A, 2010B, 2011))
5) pašaudzināšanu ir pētījuši A.Špona (Špona, 2006), Z.Čehlova (Špona & Čehlova, 2004) un
I.Čamane (Špona & Čamane, 2009).
kontekstu?
3) Kā precīza izteikumi maina vidusskolēna pašaudzināšanas diskursu?
Pētījuma uzdevumi:
1. Analizēt pašrūpju un pašaudzināšanas diskursa mijsakarības filosofiskajā, metapsiholoģiskajā
un pedagoģiskajā aspektā.
2. Izveidot mācību priekšmetu „Latviešu valoda” un „Literatūra” programmas un to īstenošanas
metodiku, aktualizējot pašrūpes vidusskolēnu pašaudzināšanas diskursā.
7
3. Aprobēt izstrādātās mācību priekšmetu „Latviešu valoda” un „Literatūra” programmas un
metodiskos materiālu.
4. Izstrādāt ieteikumus skolotājiem vidusskolēnu pašaudzināšanas diskursa izkopšanas
veicināšanai mācību priekšmetu „Latviešu valoda” un „Literatūra” mācību procesā.
Pētījuma metodes:
Teorētiskā metode:
literatūras analīze;
Empīriskās metodes:
kvalitatīvās un kvantitatīvās skolēnu aptaujas;
skolēnu rakstu darbu (eseju, domrakstu) analīze, izmantojot diskursa analīzes metodi
(kontentanalīzi);
tiešā pedagoģiskā novērošana.
Atslēgas vārdi – vidusskolēns, pašrūpes, pašaudzināšanas diskurss, vidusskolēnu vērtības,
postmodernisma paradigma.

1. PAŠAUDZINĀŠANAS DISKURSA IZKOPŠANAS TEORĒTISKAIS PAMATOJUMS
1.1. Pašaudzināšanas diskursa izkopšanas filosofiskais aspekts
Izkopjot pašaudzināšanas diskursu, ir būtiski apzināties to filosofisko kontekstu, kura
ietvaros ir aplūkojams diskursa un pašrūpju jēdziens. Pašaudzināšanas diskursa, kura pamatā ir
pašrūpes, filosofiskā aspekta analīze un izvērtējums tiek veikts, lai a) raksturotu to kontekstu, kādā
pamatā ir J.Kristevas (Kristeva, 1987, 1988, Кристева, 2003, 2004), M.Fuko, (Фуко, 1994, 1996A,
1996B, 1998A, 1998B, 2004, 2005A, 2005B, 2007A, 2007B, 2010A, 2010B, 2011A, 2011B; Fuko
2001), Ž.Lakāna (Лакан, 1995, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006A, 2006B, 2008, 2009, 2010A,
2010B, 2011), Ž.Delēza (Делез, Гваттари, 1998, 2007; Делез, 1998, 2002, 2003, 2004), F. Gvatari
12
(Делез, Гваттари, 2007), T. van Deika (Ван Дейк 1989, 2013) un citu domātāju darbi. Izkopjot
1999). Šajā laikā tiek formulēti koncepti, kas tiek aktualizēti veiktā pētījuma ietvaros: 1) personība
gan uztver pasauli, gan pašrealizējas ar valodas starpniecību (Макаров, 2003; Филипс &
Vidusskolēnu pašaudzināšanas diskurss, kura pamatā ir pašrūpes, tiek a) likts opozīcijā
patērētāju sabiedrības diskursam, b) distancējas no tā, atsakoties no klišeju nekritiskas pieņemšanas.
Tas realizējas a) leksikas izvēlē (klišejas un oriģināls, asprātīgs izteikums), b) sintakses (vienkāršota,
vēlmēm, bet nosaka tās. Valoda ir tā, kas runā caur cilvēku tad, ja tas ir iemācījies klausīties valodā;
Būtisks ir J.Kristevas (Kristeva, 1987, 1988; Кристева, 2003, 2004) priekšstats par to, ka
J.Kristeva (Кристева,
1986, 1990, 1994) definēto dialoga situāciju. Cits/Citādais ir a) sarunas partneris
Bodrijārs (Baudrillard, 1998, Bodrijārs, 2000; Бодрийяр, 1999, 2000 A, 2000 B, 2000 C, 2000
D, 2000 E, 2003, 2006 A, 2006 B, 2012) raksturo patērētāju sabiedrību kā kopienu, kurā attieksmes nosaka
sabiedrības cilvēka reakciju uz nepārtraukto patērēšanas pienākumu (Бодрийяр, 2006 A).
XX gadsimta otrās puses Eiropas kultūrā mainās vērtību sistēma, tiek apliecināta tolerance un sapratnes
nepieciešamība, tiek aktualizēta Cita/Citādā vēlamība sociumā. Citādais ļauj uz sevi paskatīties no iepriekš
neaktuāla aspekta, izvērtēt patērēšanas ieradumus.
1998A, 2011A), pakļaujot to stingri reglamentētam noteikumu kopumam.
vērtību sistēmas paradigmu, spēj to kritiski izvērtēt, nepakļaujoties tās radītajiem mītiem; c) spēj
2005A, 2005B, 2007A). Izkopjot pašaudzināšanas diskursu, būtiski ir akceptēt tieši
pašdisciplīnu, kura var veidoties, ja vidusskolēns a) apzinās sevi kā kultūras daļu un b) apzinās to,
polisemantika (Фрейд, 2004, 2008B).
I.Žoglas (Žogla, 2001) darbā „Didaktikas teorētiskie pamati” rakstītais par mācību procesa ietvaros
veicot teksta lingvistisko analīzi, kā arī daiļdarbus, kas tiek analizēti literatūras stundās;
plānojot stundu skaitu katrā no tēmām un darbu katrā konkrētā mācību stundā.
Katrā no klasēm, veidojot mācību priekšmetu „Latviešu valoda” un „Literatūra” programmu,
uzmanība tika pievērsta noteiktam izziņas darbības aspektam:
10. klasē literatūras stundās tika aktualizēts literatūrteorētiskais materiāls;
11. klasē teorētiskie postulāti, jēdzieni tika integrēti personiskajā pieredzē, tika padarīti
par vidusskolēna aktīvās leksikas daļu;
tika aktualizētas Z.Rubenes, A.Krūmiņas, I. Vanagas (Rubene, Krūmiņa & Vanaga, 2008)
darbā „Ievads mediju pedagoģijā” iekļautās atziņas;
tika akceptēts priekšstats par to, ka mediju fenomens XXI gadsimta kultūrā tiek uztverts
kā kaut kas īpaši aktuāls;
tiek analizēta mediju struktūra un semantika;
tiek aplūkota to ietekme uz patērētāju;
tiek veidotas mediju realizācijas stratēģijas;
tika akceptēts mediju izglītības kontekstā būtiskais P. Burdjē (Бурдье 2004, 2005, 2007)
viedoklis: sociums, ir sākotnēji polisemantisks, pastāvēšanu un reprezentāciju nosaka a)
materiālo resursu sadale un sociālās vērtības, b) priekšstati, domāšanas shēmas un
19
padarot to pieejamu ikvienam atbilstoši viņa interesēm un iespējām.
3. PĒTĪJUMA GAITA UN REZULTĀTI
3.1. Pētījuma dizaina metodoloģija un bāze
Veidojot pētījumu, tika izvērtēta vide, kurā vidusskolēns izkopj savu pašaudzināšanas
diskursu, kura pamatā ir pašrūpes, bija būtiski izvēlēties atbilstošu pētījuma stratēģiju. Pamatojoties
Daugavpils mazākumtautības vidusskolām no 2013. gada 1. septembra līdz 2016. gada 13. maijam,
kad vidusskolēni pabeidza skolu (tas ilga sešus semestrus). Pētījuma sākumā 2013. gadā tajā
piedalījās 10. a un b klases 45 vidusskolēni. 2014. gadā (11. klasē) divi skolēni mainīja skolu, viena
skolniece atgriezās no apmaiņas programmas, kuras laikā mācījās ārzemēs, – tādējādi pētījumā
pašaudzināšanas diskursā, ir a) oriģināls, kultūras tradīcijā sakņots vidudusskolēnu izteikums (satura
21
10. klases pirmajā semestrī teksta lingvistiskai analīzei vidusskolēniem tika piedāvāti R.Barta,
Ž.Bodrijāra, A.Bretona, N.Berdjajeva un J.Brocka darbu fragmenti. Uzmanība tika pievērsta tam, lai
vidusskolēni paplašinātu savu aktīvo leksiku. Formulējot teksta galveno domu, tematu, mērķi un
aktualitāti, skolēniem jāpauž savs viedoklis par tekstā ietverto ideju sistēmu (jāizmanto tās leksēmas,
terminus, kategorijas, kuras izmanto analizējamā teksta autors). Vidusskolēni mācījās saskatīt tekstos
atšķirīgas nianses, atslēgas vārdus. Nianšu pamanīšana un atspoguļošana tekstā vidusskolēniem 10.
klases pirmā semestrī sagādāja vislielākās grūtības. Teksta analīzes kontekstā tika aktualizēta autora
atbildība par izveidoto tekstu – vidusskolēni 10. klasē, veidojot savu izteikumu, izmantoja nevis
pirmās personas vietniekvārdu „es”, bet aizstāja to ar daudzskaitļa pirmās personas vietniekvārdu
„mēs”. Pirmā semestra laikā gandrīz visi vidusskolēni pieņēma to, ka viņiem ir jāuzņemas atbildība
lapas teksta lingvistiskajā analīzē, vidusskolēniem tika piedāvāti I.Bergmana, H.Ortega i Gaseta,
M.Heidegera, H.L.Borhesa, Epikūra, H.Heses, D.Hjūma, A.Kamī darbu fragmenti.
11. klases pirmajā semestrī teksta lingvistiskai analīzei vidusskolēniem tika piedāvāti A.Kamī,
To vidusskolēnu, kas pieņēma
Blekbērna, R. Akutagavas, K Armstronga, M. Mamardašvili, A. Loseva, H. Ārentes, V. Mikuševiča,
Dž. S. Milla, B. Rasela, A. Robs-Grijē, R. Barta darbu fragmenti.
Akutagavas, K.Armstronga, A.B.Olivia, S. Blekbērna, M.Merlo-Ponti un B.Rasela tekstu fragmenti.
Encenberga, K.Heina, I.Šlāpina, M.Zandera, P.Kropotkina, V.Sīļa darbu fragmenti. Vidusskolēni
23
atkal aktīvi pievērsās klišeju lietojumam, tikai „labi – slikti” vietā tika likta opozīcija „personība –
nekritiski domājošs patērētājs”, vidusskolēni zināšanas līmenī bija pieņēmuši, ka būt „personībai” ir
„labi”, bet būt „nekritiski domājošam patērētājam” ne īpaši labi. Daļa vidusskolēnu it kā pieņēma
aktualizēts priekšstats par to, ka tieši valoda atspoguļo personības īpatnības.
būtisks, gan to, kas nav pieņemams. Pedagoģiskā vērojuma laikā iegūtās informācijas analīzes un
24
iekļautās ideju sistēmas izvērtējumu: viņi saskatīja to kopīgo, kas vieno mūsdienu cilvēka pasaules
poēmu „Mūžības skartie”, J.Ezeriņa darbus „Iegātnīša” un „Mērkaķis”, A.Upīša tekstus „Aiz
E.Raupa, I.Jansones, J.Elsberga un K.Vērdiņa, I.Gailes un P.Draguna tekstus.
jāatsakās no klišeju lietojuma valodā.
3.4. Vidusskolēnu pašaudzināšanas diskursa, kura pamatā ir pašrūpes, izkopšana
ārpusklases pasākumu laikā
Izvērtējot vidi, kurā vidusskolēns izkopj savu pašaudzināšanas diskursu, kura pamatā ir
pašrūpes, būtiski bija sistematizēt informāciju, kas iegūta veicot tiešo pedagoģisko vērojumu
ārpusklases pasākumu laikā. Iegūtās informācijas analīzes un sistematizācijas mērķis bija veidot
priekšstatu par to, vai a) vidusskolēnu pašaudzināšanas diskurss tiek realizēts ārpusskolas vidē, b)
jo a) teātra izrādes laikā skanēja skaista dzīvā mūzika, b) izrādes pamatā bija aizkustinošs mīlestības
naudas līdzekļi, vidusskolēni nebija gatavi to darīt. 11. klasē vidusskolēni vēlējās nevis mācīties no
kultūras tekstiem, bet reprezentēt sevi. Daļa vidusskolēnu labprāt piedalījās dažāda līmeņa
konkursos. Pirmā semestra laikā, piedaloties pilsētas un valsts līmeņa konkursos, būtiskākais
sasniegums bija pirmā vieta Eiropas Savienības mājas un Eiropas Kustības Latvijā organizētajā
konkursā „Eiropas pēdas Latvijā”. Vidusskolēni veidoja videomateriālu par savu pilsētu.
11. klases 2. semestra laikā vidusskolēni turpināja iesaistīties dažāda līmeņa Latvijas un
Eiropas Savienības konkursos. Vidusskolēni piedalījās Eiropas Savienības Sociālo lietu komitejas
organizētajā konkursā, kura ietvaros bija jāveido Eiropas Savienības himnas interpretācija, parādot
to, kā videorullīša autori jūtas Eiropā. Tika izveidots videoklips, kas konkursā, kurā piedalījās 50
videoklipu no visām ES valstīm, ieguva septīto vietu.
aktualizāciju: a) vidusskolēni veido/neveido precīzu, oriģinālu, ar kultūru sabalsotu izteikumu; b)
pieredzes.
definē to, balstoties uz zināšanām.
nevis uzņemties atbildību, bet pārlikt to.
iespēja veidot sevi, ņemot vērā situāciju, gan iekļaujoties tajā, gan veidojot to.
nevajadzētu atteikties no paša definētajām idejām.
jebkura darbība ir iespēja „nolasīt” personību, saprast to. Atbildība tiek izvērtēta melu un patiesības
kontekstā – atbildēt nozīmē nemelot sev. Atbildība tiek saistīta ar paškontroli. 12. klases 2. semestra
beigās atbildība tiek definēta kā viena no personības pamatpazīmēm. Atbildība tiek saistīta ar
31
situācijas modelēšanu – vispirms tā tiek izvērtēta, analizēti iespējamie modeļi, tikai tad realizēta.
Atbildība tiek pielīdzināta tekstveidei, tāpat kā autors nevar atteikties no sava teksta, arī personība
nevar atteikties no savas dzīves, jo tad tā tiek pakļauta destrukcijai, tiek iznīcināta no iekšpuses.
10. klases 1. semestra sākumā vidusskolēni raksta, ka nav gatavi uzņemties atbildību par to,
kas notiek ap viņiem. Atbildība tiek saistīta ar kontroles situāciju; vidusskolēni raksta, ka nav gatavi
kontrolēt citus. 10. klases 2. semestra beigās atbildība par apkārtējiem netika pieņemta, atbildība tiek
aktualizēta savas nākotnes kontekstā. Atbildība tiek saistīta ar citu rīcības, uzvedības izvērtējumu,
neuzņemoties atbildību par citiem cilvēkiem, norisēm sabiedrībā.
11. klases 1. semestra beigās vidusskolēnu viedoklis ir daļēji mainījies. Daļa vidusskolēnu ir
gatavi uzņemties atbildību par to, kas notiek ap viņiem. Pie tam atbildība netiek saistīta ar sadzīvisku
līdzāspastāvēšanu, tā ir filosofiski pamatota pozicionēšanās sociumā. 11. klases 2. semestra beigās
tiek rakstīts par to, ka atbildība ir saistāma ar to, ko personība ir radījusi pati, nevis to, ko ir izdarījuši
citi.
saistīta ar to, ka pastāvot noteiktā telpā, tiek apjaustas tās likumsakarības, līdz ar to izpratne rada
kopumā, atbild par to.
Septītais jautājums („Vārda „pašrūpes” nozīme man saistās ar...”) deva iespēju raksturojot
iespēja to izprast un integrēt savā pieredzē.
Dominē pozīcija – man ļoti
gribētos, lai mani līdzcilvēki arī saprastu to, ko esmu sapratis es, taču zinu, ka tas nav iespējams. 11.
34
aprakstam: cenšas izvērtēt sevi, sabalsojot ar kultūru, cenšas vispārināt, veidot sistēmu. Taču
joprojām saglabājas trafaretas atbildes, vidusskolēni vēl nav gatavi domāt par sevi pašu.
11. klases 1. semestra beigās vidusskolēni vērtības nosauc formāli, tiek rakstīts, ka
pastāvēšana mainīgā pasaulē, liedz definēt vērtības. Atbildēs joprojām nav izvērstu skaidrojumu; ir
vārdi, kuru semantika netiek precizēta. 11. klases 2. semestra beigās tika sniegts pārdomāts vērtību
raksturojums: tiek nosauktas a) sociālās iemaņas – prasme izmantot dažādus sociālus kodus
izvērtēt, kurš no pašrūpju aspektiem šķiet būtisks.
35
2. Pašaudzināšanas diskursā aktualizētās pašrūpes ir dzīves mākslas aspekts – filosofiska
prakse, kuras ietvaros vidusskolēni pieņem, ka, veidojot sevi, ir a) jārūpējas par savu garīgo
pasauli (lasīšana, rakstīšana, patiesības teikšana, domāšana par nāvi, pārmaiņu sevī
fiksēšana), b) fizisko ķermeni (fiziski vingrojumi, sevis ierobežošana). Vidusskolēni, izkopjot
savu pašaudzināšanas diskursu, apzinās sevi kā a) kultūras daļu (brīvi izmanto kultūrā
aktuālas zīmes, zina to nozīmes sinhrono un diahrono aspektu), b) veido savu izteikumu, kurā
tradicionālās zīmes gūst jaunu semantisko nokrāsu.
36
pamatojas uz kultūras tekstu izvērtējumu;
izvērtējumu, refleksiju;
spogulis parāda personību, ļauj būt ceļā uz sevis saprašanu;
saprast citādo, atšķirīgo);
e) ja patērētāju sabiedrību veido „klusējošais vairākums”, kas nav gatavs paust un aizstāvēt savu
viedokli, tad pašaudzināšanas diskursa, kur pamatā ir pašrūpes, ietvaros tiek pausts pamatots,
argumentēts, kultūrā sakņots, precīzs izteikums, kurā tiek izteikta šī brīža patiesība.
kas pastāvētu ārpus kultūras pieredzes konteksta;
esamība;
c) fiziski objekti pastāv, taču tie savu nozīmi, semantiku iegūst tikai pastāvot diskursa
ietvaros; diskursa maiņa ir sociuma, personības pašaudzināšanas vides transformācija;
d) diskurss nevar būt pabeigts, līdz galam izveidots: diskursa analīzes mērķis nav parādīt
patiesību kā tādu, bet to, kā tā tiek uztverta analīzes brīdī;
37
e) personības identitāte veidojas, reprezentējoties diskursā: izteikumu vaido oriģinālas vai no
citiem tekstiem aizgūtas zīmju virknes; diskursu veido zīmes, mīti, cēloņsakarības (kas
nosaka zīmju aktualizāciju), jēdzieni, kas ir saistīti ar identitātes meklējumiem;
nosacījumi);
g) veidojot savu diskursīvo pozīciju, personība sabalso to ar varas un politisko diskursu,
kuram raksturīgs:
sastingums, nomināciju hierarhisks kārtojums;
agresivitāte – tiek izmantota manipulācijas nolūkā;
ir nominālas;
dominē lietvārdi un īpašības vārdi: esamības elementu nominācija, neņemot vērā to
procesuālo iedabu;
paredzamība – patērētājs vēlas, lai nebūtu jāsaskaras ar pārsteigumu;
h) diskurss tiek uzskatīts par komunikatīvu notikumu;
Ja kultūras paradigma tiek uztverta nekritiski, tad a) personība var
kļūt par diskursa ruporu (runā atspoguļo tikai svešu izteikumu), b) izteikumā plaši tiek
izmantotas klišejas, stereotipiski vārdu savienojumi, sadzīves metaforas (norāde uz
piederību noteiktam diskursam, izteikumam netiek piešķirta individuāla semantika);
jādiferencē zīmes, kas aizgūtas no dažādiem kultūras tekstiem;
38
k) nav sākotnēji gatava vēstījuma, tas veidojas dialogā (autors un teksts); diskurss nevar būt
sākotnēji piemītošs, tas veidojas nepārtraukti, integrējot sevī šī brīža pieredzi un mainot,
pārvērtējot diskursa ietvaros aktuālās zīmes un simbolus;
Izkopjot
pašaudzināšanas diskursu, kura pamatā ir pašrūpes, vidusskolēns apzinās jebkuras parādības,
notikuma polisemantiskumu, intertekstuālo iedabu, saprot to un var rast risinājumu sarežģītās
problēmsituācijās (modelējot vairākus variantus).
toleranci un sapratni – citādais, atšķirīgais ļauj uz sevi paskatīties no iepriekš neaktuāla aspekta;
ir izdarījis;
tiek uztverta kā sevis iepazīšanas un mainīšanas iespēja;
paštēlu – realizējas virtuālajā un reālajā telpā, to veido zīmes, kas precīzi izsaka personības
iecerēto vēstījumu;
interesantu, oriģinālu viedokli, privātas komunikācijas iespēju – saistāma ne tikai ar
reālo, bet arī ar virtuālo saziņu, iespēju uzticēties;
sevi ar noteiktu korporatīvu vidi;
īslaicīgumu, fragmentaritāti – darbība prasa maksimālu atdevi un koncentrēšanos, tikai
tad personība atbildīs pieprasījumam – būs interesanta citiem.
7. Pētījuma laikā, pārbaudot izveidotās mācību priekšmetu „Latviešu valoda” un „Literatūra” programmas
un didaktisko materiālu, tika secināts, ka
mediju izglītības konceptu aktualizācija dod iespēju veidot mācību un audzināšanas vidi, kurā
vidusskolēni izkopj pašaudzināšanas diskursu, pastāvot dialogā ar komplicētiem kultūras tekstiem,
sabalso ar tiem savu vērtību sistēmu un veido attieksmi pret pašrūpju fenomenu;
39
komplicētu tekstu (filosofu darbu fragmentu, zinātnisku tekstu) izmantošana mācību procesā ir
pamatota, jo tādējādi tiek izkopts vidusskolēnu pasaudzināšanas diskurss, aktualizējot precīzu
izteikumu kā personības izkopšanas un reprezentācijas iespēju;
pasaulē valdošās likumsakarības;
b) sarunas partneris, kas atrodas līdzās personībai, kas realizē pašaudzināšanas diskursu, kura
pamatā ir pašrūpes – komunikācija, kurā notiek personības atspoguļojums Cita/Citādā
apziņā;
vienlaikus apliecināt pretējus (vienlaikus pastāvošus) parādības aspektus;
pašpietiekamību un neļauj personībai iet uz kompromisu ar sociālo gaidu horizontu;
c) jāmācās veidot abstrakts (prāta konstrukcijā sakņots) izteikums, kas pastāv ārpus
sadzīviskas pieredzes robežām;
40
d) jāatsakās no tukšvārdības un klišejām (ko rada sociāli marķēti stereotipi), vēsturiskiem
un sociāliem mītiem;
e) jāņem vērā gan izteikumā izmantoto zīmju semantika, gan tas, ka katram diskursam
piemīt savas iekšējas likumsakarības;
vienu reizi, tā atkārtojums ir plaģiāts;
diahronais aspekts), taču izteikumā tās gūst jaunu nokrāsu;
5. Veidojot vidi, kurā tiek aktualizētas pašrūpes, tiek definēta noteikta vērtību sistēma, kura
realizējas trīs līmeņos:
a) sadzīves līmenis, kurā tiek vērtības tikai iezīmētas, tad tās iziet noteiktu apstrādes ciklu;
b) sabalsojums ar tirgus ekonomikas pieprasījuma un piedāvājuma diskursu;
c) vērtības realizācija simbolā: tiek definēta tās specifika, kas reizē darbojas a) personības
realizētājā dzīves mākslā, b) pozicionējoties ekonomisko procesu kontekstā, c) mentālajā
dzīvē, kura ir vērsta uz sevis paša iepazīšanu (turklāt vērtība vieno visus trīs līmeņus vienotā
veselumā).

INTRODUCTION
The school of the 21st century is a dynamic system which has to keep in step with the
changeable social economic situation as testified by a post-modern paradigm of culture. The
conformity of the education system, including self-education as its constituent part, with the
requirements of the epoch has been assessed in all times; it has frequently come under fair
criticism, indicating that the structure, teaching methods and end-product of the system do not
comply with social and economic requirements of the time. This criticism is frequently valid:
when the society and economic relations change, the requirements set out for the education
system also change. As the value of freedom in European culture grows, it is essential to accept
this freedom as a dynamic development and diversity within the framework of the system of
education as well.
Postmodern culture (Sokolova, 1998, 2006, 2008a, 2008b, 2009) is based on dynamism
and changeability: the perception of the world, human attitude to information, mutual relations,
and also the way how the educational process has to be implemented at school have undergone
changes. The secondary school learners develop their own system of values and their own vision
of the world which reflect the concepts of contemporary cultural paradigm. One of the values of
postmodernism culture is a creative personality ready to take responsibility for the results of
one’s activity. Therefore, during the educational process, particularly during the secondary
school stage, self-education becomes essential, and within the frame of self-education attention
is focused on the development of a responsible personality who recognizes the necessity of
developing self-discipline.
However, a discrepancy in the contemporary education system of Latvia is apparent: on
the one hand, to join the labor market a person is required to be able to find unconventional
problem situation solutions; on the other, the consumer society and quite often our education
system, too, are oriented towards using clichés, which does not create a situation that would
teach learners to search for original situation solutions.
The discrepancy that has arisen between the necessity to use clichés as required by a
consumer society and the environment necessary for the personality to exist in changeability
could be overcome as follows: at developing the self-education discourse, a learner activates
self-care, works with oneself both mentally and physically, pays attention to changes that occur
to him as a personality, and assesses them. During the educational process, at creating the
situation where learners can develop their self-education discourse, a schematic consumption
42
text should be contrasted with a complicated narrative. By activating self-care, learners engage in
a dialogue with a complicated text, become aware of, analyze and develop themselves.
The doctoral thesis is devoted to the issue of how to create the environment where during
the educational process the secondary school learners could develop their self-education
discourse at studying the subjects “The Latvian Language” and “Literature”. Self-care provides
such an opportunity. At reading texts and structuring precise utterances (in writing), learners
learn to get to know themselves and to accurately express their opinion, abandoning socially
marked clichés. At assessing the events, telling the truth and reflecting on death, learners enter
into a dialogue with those culture texts.
The contexts of problem situations brought into focus in the doctoral thesis have been studied
in works by the philosophers, meta-psychologists and pedagogues of the 20th
and 21st centuries:
6) The possibility of studying and solving synergetic problem-situations has been represented in
works by I.Prigožins (Пригожин, 1960, 1985, 2001, 2005);
7) The pedagogical aspect of self-education has been studied by A.Špona (Špona, 2006),
Z.Čehlova (Špona & Čehlova, 2004) and I.Čamane (Špona & Čamane, 2009);
8) The relations between a personality and a consumer society have been brought into focus by
J.Baudrillard (Bodrijārs, 2000; Baudrillard, Бодрийяр, 1999, 2000 A, 2000 B, 2000 C, 2000 D,
2000 E, 2003, 2006 A, 2006 B, 2007, 2012), P. Bourdieu (Bourdieu, Wacqant, 1992;
2002, 2004, 2005, 2007), T. van Deik (Ван Дейк 1989, 2013) and I.Iļjins (Ильин, 2008);
9) The philosophical aspect of a discourse and self-care is reflected in works by M.Fuko (Фуко,
1994, 1996A, 1996B, 1998A, 1998B, 2004, 2005A, 2005B, 2007A, 2007B, 2010A, 2010B,
2011A, 2011B; Fuko 2001),Tena van Deik (Ван Дейк 1989, 2013), Ž. Otjē – Revju (Отъе-
Ревю, 1999), P.Serio (Серио, 1999), A.Fjodorov (Федоров, 2004), L. G. Philips and
M.V.Jorgens (Филипс, & Йоргенсен, 2004), J. Habermas (Хабермас, 2008) and

The above mentioned problems determined the choice of the theme of the doctoral thesis: Self-
care for the development of secondary school learners’ self-education discourse.
Research object: the development of secondary school learners’ self-education discourse.
Research subject: designing of “The Latvian Language” and “Literature” curricula oriented
towards the development of secondary school learners’ self-education discourse, and providing
the learning process with didactic materials.
Research aim: to study the process of the development of self-care-oriented secondary school
learners’ self-education discourse.
Research questions:
1) How does focusing on self-care influence the development of secondary school learners’
self-education discourse?
2) How do secondary school learners define their relations with the cultural text as the
context of their personality existence?
3) How does a precise structuring of utterance affect secondary school learners’ self-
education discourse?
Research tasks:
1. To study the philosophical, meta-psychological and culturological basis of the
development of self-education discourse.
2. To design “The Latvian Language” and “Literature” curricula and provide the didactic
materials, bringing the self-care into focus of secondary school learners’ self-education
discourse.
3. To verify the designed “The Latvian Language” and “Literature” curricula and the
didactic material.
4. To produce recommendations to teachers on the creation of the environment promoting
the development of self-education discourse in “The Latvian Language” and “Literature”
during the learning process.
Applied research methods:
Critical analysis and assessment of theoretical literature;
Qualitative and quantitative questionnaire survey of learners;
Analysis of learners’ written works (essays, compositions) by applying a discourse
analysis method;
44
Direct pedagogical observation.
Key words: secondary school learners, self-care, development of self-education discourse, value
system, consumer society paradigm.
Research base:
To study the current situation, a longitudinal quantitative and qualitative research was carried out
in one of Daugavpils minority secondary schools from September 1, 2013, to May 15, 2016. The
research revealed how, by creating the environment where secondary school learners develop
their self-education discourse based on self-care, 1) learners’ feeling of belonging to culture
changes; 2) secondary school learners’ dialogue with culture texts develops; 3) the structure and
active vocabulary of learners’ utterances changes.
During the research the phenomenon of self-care was brought into focus. The self-care
(Foyle & Hostad, 2010; Roger, 2005) may manifest itself in different ways; within the
framework of the doctoral thesis, attention was paid to the hermeneutic and meta-psychological
aspects of the phenomenon. Self-care is a philosophical practice to be implemented daily, and it
consists of such components as: reading (reading is done every day, and complicated texts are
being read), writing (what has been understood, known about oneself and the world is fixed
every day), thinking about what has changed during a specific period of time (during a day), the
truth is told, death is being reflected upon (being aware of the finitude of one’s existence it is
easier to be honest), one’s body is taken care of. Manifestations of self-care as a phenomenon
unfold in the self-education discourse which is opposed to the discourse of a consumer society.
Within the frame of the research: a) the inductive method is applied, providing the
opportunity of examining the phenomenon within the context of the contemporary education
system and thereby bringing the perception of education as care about oneself and the
environment into focus; b) activity- and experience-based approach was made topical,
implemented as a lasting cooperation between secondary school learners and teachers. Within
the framework of the research, at developing the philosophical, literary-theoretical and cultural
substantiation of self-education discourse, the synergic approach was applied. An essential
experience of different science branches was activated within the context of pedagogy, thus, the
context of secondary school learners’ discourse was extended.
In the research, the secondary school learners’ self-education discourse was developed by
making use of the hermeneutic and meta-psychological approach to the language, assuming that
45
a language is an open system providing a personality with the opportunity of both being reflected
in it and developing oneself in the dialogue with language and culture. Thereby, a complex
approach was implemented – focusing on self-care in the secondary school learners’ self-
education discourse may yield different results (this may be the level of acceptance, or
informative level).
A postulate – at acquiring “The Latvian Language” and “Literature”, secondary school
learners’ self-education discourse is developed by employing self-care – is innovative.
Scientific novelty of the research:
1. The philosophical, cultural, psychological and pedagogical substantiation of the
development of secondary school learners’ self-education discourse has been provided.
2. During a long period of time, by integrating quantitative and qualitative research
methods, secondary school learners’ attitude to self-care and culture was elucidated, and
the analysis was carried out indicating how a precise utterance was formulated within the
context of reflecting secondary school learners’ self-education discourse.
3. It was also clarified what kind of complicated texts affect secondary school learners’ self-
education discourse, what values are topical for learners in their works and questionnaire
surveys, and which problem issues the learners want to find answers to.
Practical significance of the research:
1. During the research, “The Latvian Language” and “Literature” curricula and didactic
materials for a secondary school stage have been developed and verified. By applying the
discourse analysis as a teaching method, it is possible to help learners to successfully
prepare for the centralized examination in “The Latvian Language”.
2. Recommendations to teachers on the creation of the environment promoting the
development of secondary school learners’ self-education discourse in “The Latvian
Language” and “Literature” during the learning process have been produced.
Structure and restrictions of the doctoral thesis:
The structure of the doctoral thesis includes introduction, three chapters, conclusions, list of
literature, and 14 appendices. In total, 240 literature sources in Latvian, English, German, French
and Russian have been analyzed.
Theses for the defense:

1. A discourse is a representation of a phenomenon (in an utterance or in a sign system)
which implements the unity of content and style, indicating to the nature of the
phenomenon and taking into consideration the context it is implemented in – an open,
dynamic system. The discourse includes both aspects – content and form, activating J.
Kristeva’s (Кристева, 2003, 2004) defined relations between a phenotext and a genotext
on both levels.
2. A self-education discourse is a learner’s deliberately formed representation in a language,
bringing into focus a culture-rooted polysemic system of signs whose task is to convey a
specific message, interacting with the social and cultural situation, assuring the self. The
self-education discourse is implemented in accordance with the conception about self-
care as an aspect of art of life – a philosophical practice based on the conception that at
developing oneself care should be taken of both – the development of one’s spiritual
world and the development of one’s physical body.
3. Focusing on self-care during the self-education process provides the secondary school
learners with the opportunity of gaining and evaluating experience, attuning it to the texts
of culture, and thereby recognizing themselves as responsible participants of culture,
which is an open, dynamic system.
4. In an educational environment, which is favorable for learners to develop and represent
themselves in a language, secondary school learners can develop their active vocabulary,
get free of stereotypes and clichés in their language, can develop a critical attitude to
one’s own and others’ message, develop their discursive position. The development of
self-care-based self–education discourse provides the secondary school learners with the
opportunity of fitting into the context of sustainable education, accepting personality’s
assessment and transformation as an opportunity for a spiritual existence.

Chapter 1 THE DEVELOPMENT OF SELF-EDUCATION DISCOURSE:
THEORETICAL BASIS
1.1. The Development of Self-Education Discourse: Philosophical Aspect
At developing the environment where secondary school learners develop their self-
education discourse based on self-care, it is essential to recognize the philosophical context
within whose framework the concepts of discourse and self-care are discussed. The analysis and
assessment of the philosophical aspect of self-education discourse are aimed at studying and
marking that context material within which the material of the curriculum is to be treated, as well
as the didactic material which is being designed within the frame of the subjects “The Latvian
Language” and “Literature” and is aimed at developing the environment where secondary school
learners could develop themselves as personalities, realizing that they are active and responsible
participants in processes of culture as an open system.
Self-care was brought into focus by the philosophical tradition of the second half of the
20th century based on works by J.Kristeva (Kristeva, 1987, 1988,
1989, 2013) and other thinkers. At developing a self-education discourse based on self-
care, the system of concepts worked out by meta-psychology is very essential. It is based on the
assumption that just the language is personality’s opportunity for self-realization, which
materializes as a mechanism of analysis and a possible instrument of the development of the self.
Developing their self-education discourse, secondary school learners work on their
utterances, getting rid of social and verbal clichés, seeking for the style (choose the active
vocabulary and syntactic categories) corresponding to the world outlook of their personalities.
Self-education discourse consists of deliberately chosen language means activated in learners’
verbal self-realization and signs (Лотман, 1994, 1998, 2000) which characterize the link of a
visual image created by a secondary school learner’s personality with a definite cultural
tradition. Within the framework of art of life, by practicing self-care, a personality is perceived
as a self-sufficient phenomenon who deliberately develops oneself, incorporating one’s own
50
experience into the diachronic and synchronic context of the already defined experience of
culture (Фуко, 2007B).
When creating the environment where secondary school learners can develop their self-
education discourse based on self-care, the concepts defined within the frame of discourse
analysis were brought into focus. The origins of the discourse analysis as a discipline of text
analysis go back to the 60-s in France, where it emerged from the unity of linguistics, neo-
Marxism, and psychoanalysis (Серио, 1999). At this time, concepts used in the research were
formulated: 1) a personality both perceives world and self-realizes through language (Макаров,
2004); 2) there is no utterance which would exist outside the
context of the experience of culture, outside the attitudes of personality and power (Серио,
1999); 3) not only what already exists is reconstructed through language, but also being itself is
created through it (Филипс&Йоргенсен, 2004); 4) the different is a) language clichés borrowed
from an uncritically taken discourse, b) culture signs integrated into personality’s system of
conceptions (Отье Ревю, 1999).
At creating the environment where secondary school learners develop their self-education
discourse based on self-care, we must take into consideration the fact that such discourse is
opposed against the discourse of a consumer society, or at least disassociates from it, avoiding
uncritical acceptance of clichés. This principle is applies to the levels of both the choice of
vocabulary (clichés and an original, witty expression), and syntax (a simplified, unclear and
complicated, but structured sentence structure).
1.1.1. Language as an Opportunity for Self-Understanding and Self-
Development
When creating the environment where the secondary school learners can develop their self-
education discourse based on self-care, it is vital to define the philosophical aspect of the
language as the means of personality’s representation and development. The analysis and
assessment of the interrelations between language and personality are aimed at defining the role
of the language as an open system in the context of the didactic material (which is worked out
within the frame of the subjects “The Latvian Language” and “Literature”), so that on
developing their self-education discourse the secondary school learners would activate not only
the functional, but also the hermeneutical and meta-psychological interpretation of the language,
To perceive a language as an opportunity for self-representation, which is not only
functional (is used for achieving definite social goals), but also testifies to the secondary school
learners’ perception of the world, the vision of the language offered by M. Heidegger
51
(Heidegger, 1967; Heidegers, 1998; Хайдеггер, 2000, 2001) is essential. Language is compared
to a transcendental formation which determines the human’s wishes rather than obeys them.
Language speaks through a human, if the latter has learnt to listen to the language; a human is
viewed not as a creator and measure of all things, but rather as a means through which the
existence of being, the home of language, materializes (Хайдеггер, 2000, 2001).
Vital is also the conception of J. Kristeva (Kristeva, 1987, 1988;
assuming that personality involves self-analysis and listening attentively to the self, as well as
holding a conversation with oneself and with culture. J. Kristeva (Кристева, 2003, 2004)
assesses the phenomenon of language in the context of M. Bahtin’s (Бахтин, 1986, 1990, 1994)
dialogical word, writing that a language situation influences the process of personality’s self-
development, as well as that a personality is fully reflected in one’s language – in the text, both
oral and written (Кристева, 2004).
J. Lakan (Лакан, 1995) introduces the category of The Other/The Different which also is
to be related to a dialogue situation defined by M. Bahtin (Бахтин, 1986, 1990, 1994). The
Other/The Different is a) a partner in a conversation (The Other/ The Different is the one who is
with a personality, who develops a self-education discourse (then it is a communication where a
personality gets reflected in the consciousness of The Other/The Different)); b) a personality
himself (The Other/The Different is the one who develops the self-education discourse and is
estranged from oneself, so that would not only develop, but also assess care of the self); c) the
processes of sub-consciousness (The Other/The Different is the one who holds a dialogue with
consciousness in dreams, nightmare, art works, creating texts by specific signs which indicate to
work of sub-consciousness). Within the framework of self-education discourse a personality
becomes part of a cultural space as uses a language a) to integrate the information accumulated
in personal experience into culture, b) to fix one’s assessment of experience, where a personal
emotional experience and culture intertwine, c) to fix one’s dialogue with sub-consciousness,
analyzing the utterance created by oneself from such an aspect.
The Different is to be associated with the role of irony in the text described by J. Deleuz
1998) - what is essential is located on the boundary of perception, it cannot be directly
perceived, a discourse is only a sign indicating to it, or a linguistic construction where the ironic
deconstruction of the essential takes place. Within the context of self-education discourse, irony
has to be related simultaneously to a) telling the truth as an ironic deconstruction of a situation
and b) development of an ironic discourse, witticism, nonsense, paradox – this provides a
personality with the opportunity of understanding oneself by telling oneself the truth.
52
At creating the environment where secondary school learners develop their self-education
discourse based on self-care, a game situation is brought into focus: secondary school learners
use signs which correspond to social expectations of some specific social group or of those
involved in the situation, and by combining them, imparting certain nuances to them they
develop original utterances which show both personality’s features and personality’s attitude to
socially marked clichés. By getting involved in this game, a personality learns to develop the
social capital defined by P. Burdieu (Burdieu & Wacqant, 1992; Бурдье, 2002, 2004, 2005,
2007).
1.1.2. The Mutual Relations between a Personality and a Consumer Society
On creating the environment where secondary school learners develop their self-education
discourse based on self-care, it is important to analyze the paradigm of a consumer society. The
aim of the analysis of the dialogue between the phenomenon of consuming and a personality is
to mark the mutual relations between the education of a consumer society and media, by
activating in the didactic material designed within the frame of the “Latvian Language” and
“literature’ the conception about the competence of media and their attitude to information.
J. Baudrillard (Baudrillard, 1998; Bodrijars, 2000; Бодрийяр, 1999, 200A, 2000B, 2000C,
2000D, 2000E, 2006A, 2006B, 2012) characterizes a consumer society as a community in which
attitudes are determined not by people, but by things; a human is not a self-sufficient personality,
but is a function that joins in the process of consuming. A self-care-based self-education
discourse can be developed, if a personality is aware of a discourse accepted by a consumer
society which is based on consuming associated with a) spiritual experience, b) body as the
economic capital and a self-representation opportunity, c) spending leisure time for relaxation, d)
tiredness as a reaction of consumer society’s member to the duty of consuming continuously
In European culture of the second half of the 20th
century, the system of values changes, the need
for tolerance and understanding is emphasized, the desirability of the presence of The Other/The
Different in the socium is recognized. The Different allows taking a look at itself from a
previously neglected aspect, to assess consuming habits.
1.1.3. Personality’s Positioning, Assuring the Self
When the environment where the secondary school learners can develop their self-
education discourse based on self-care is created, it is essential to study the experience of those
intellectuals who have been in opposition to a consumer society. The value system analysis,
made in the works by the intellectuals of the second half of the 20th
and the beginning of the 21st
53
century, is aimed at defining values discussed in the didactic material designed within the frame
of the subjects “The Latvian Language” and “Literature”.
The secondary school learners position themselves in the socium, showing their attitude to
categories and values topical within the framework of postmodern culture. To define their own
system of values, secondary school learners have to define the relations between a personality
and power, since any socialization is related to the assessment of relations between a personality
and power (Фуко, 1998B, 2007A, 2011A). If a secondary school learner develops a self-
education discourse based on self-care, then he critically assesses the discourse of power (Фуко,
1994). The discourse of power is oriented towards imposing restrictions and exercising control
over a personality; self-care is an opportunity to preserve and develop oneself as a personality in
the situation where the structures of power (the system of education as well) are inclined to
control personality’s life (Фуко, 1998A, 2011A), making them obey strictly regulated
instructions.
At developing the self-education discourse, the definition of the nature of the intellectual,
given by M. Foucault (Фуко, 2010A, 2010B) at the end of the 20th
c. (it refers also to the 21st
century), is important: an intellectual is a personality who a) is well aware of the processes
taking place in the society; b) is aware of the paradigm of value system in postmodern culture (a
consumer society), is able to critically assess it, disregarding the myths cultivated by it; c) is able
to develop oneself and control, analyze this process. Secondary school learners who have
decided to develop their self-care-based self-education discourse accept the position of the
intellectual. The discursive positions of a personality and power find interface in intellectual’s
discourse – the common thing for them is discipline. The position of power tends to accustom to
discipline personality’s physical existence: a personality disciplines oneself, one’s mental work,
thereby gaining freedom that can be opposed to non-freedom imposed by power (Фуко, 2005,
2005B, 2007A). On developing self-education discourse, it is of vital importance to accept just
self-discipline which can develop, if a secondary school learner a) is aware of himself as part of
culture and b) is aware of the fact that he is not just an element of a consumer mechanism, but is
rather a self-value.
Freedom is one of the most significant values which get activated at developing the
environment where secondary school learners develop their self-education discourse. Just the
desire to be free allows a personality to oppose the discourse of power and consuming (Фуко,
1996A, 1998B) and enter into the dialogue with culture. Freedom is a way towards knowing
oneself, including also establishing personality’s unpleasant aspects.
54
1.2. The Development of Self-Education Discourse: Meta-Psychological Aspect
At creating the environment where secondary school learners can develop their self-
education discourse based on self-care, language is to be taken as a material manifestation of
personality’s analysis and development: a personality can assess oneself, if a personality
analyzes one’s utterance, and, by changing one’s utterance a personality may change the mutual
relations with The Different. The assessment of a meta-psychological aspect of self-education
discourse is aimed at integrating the language conception worked out by meta-psychology (work
with utterances) into the didactic material designed within the frame of the subjects “The Latvian
Language” and “Literature”.
Of vital importance is the conception accepted in psychoanalysis (Фрейд, 1992; Freids,
1994, 1998, 2000, 2007) about the influence of the level of human instincts on the assessment of
the motivation of actions, the opinion that it is personality’s use of language that indicates to the
processes of sub-consciousness and problems rooted in memories stored in sub-consciousness. In
relation to the development of self-education discourse based on self-care, within the context of
language, essential is S. Freud’s (Freids, 1994, 2007) theory about the interaction between
consciousness and unconsciousness, representation of Eros and Tanatos, as well as the notions
about the significance of totems and taboo in primeval cultures and their role in a consumer
society. In order to understand a phenomenon, you have to find and understand its cause, you
have to accept the polysemy of the phenomenon (Фрейд, 2004, 2008B). It is vital to accept the
fact that any phenomenon, situation is an aggregate of specific elements; on analyzing a specific
utterance, it necessary to define a) why these and no other lexemes and syntactic constructions
have been used, and b) what causes the appearance of socially marked clichés in some fragment
of the utterance.
S. Freud (Фред, 2003) expresses the opinion that psychoanalysis can be used (in
perspective - viewed) as a part of a pedagogical process when the analysis of a personality is
made: it offers a greater opportunity for understanding oneself, for understanding the reasons for
one’s action. Language is a mirror of processes in psyche which fixes the nuances of
personality’s changes, thus testifying to the fact that a personality develops one’s relations with
peers and culture texts.
1.3. The Development of Self-Education Discourse: Pedagogical Aspect
In the research, conducted on the development of secondary school learners’ self-education
discourse, a synergetic approach is applied – the experience of various sciences is synthesized,
and common to this experience is pedagogical findings, the aim of whose assessment pertains to
55
the didactic material developed in the frame of ‘The Latvian Language” and “Literature”, as well
as to the pedagogical and didactic provision. Pedagogical findings create the framework for the
previously discussed scientific concepts, uniting them into an open, dynamic system.
The self-education discourse based on self-care is to be discussed within the paradigm of
the 21st century education. During the education process, the synchronic and diachronic
experience of education system have to be combined; this process should comply with the
requirements of the epoch and simultaneously should accept the principle of historical
gradualness, which H. G. Gadamer speaks about in his work “Truth and Method” (Gadamers,
1999). The 21st century education is learner-centered: the focus of its attention is learner’s work
and responsibility, a learner chooses the way he/she would learn and would develop their self-
education discourse based on self-care, the task of the education system is to create favorable
conditions for learning and self-education.
The subject of education is human’s spiritual-moral development which is manifested in
human’s ethical attitude towards the world, the other and the self (Špona & Čehlova, 2004). The
development of self-education discourse based on self-care is supposed to begin the process
which a personality would then continue the whole life – it is the desire to self-improve (Špona,
2006). Self-education is a purposeful, will-related process which a personality of any age
deliberately manages on the basis of self-analysis (Špona & Čamane, 2009).
The dominants of learner-centered education are values essential for a personality – the
flexibility of postmodern society values which, by accepting The Other/The Different, form the
attitude to the situation rather than proclaim abstract general values in slogans (Čehlovs, 2008).
School should accept the value system which meets the requirements of postmodern culture
(Broks, 2000): school must not be isolated from the society, it must align with general processes
by assessing the given situation and offering possible solutions, variants of the vision of future.
School should accept the assumption that the system of education has to be holistic (Ласло,
2011), since only the process oriented towards life-long personality’s self-learning and self-
education, molding oneself into a rational and emotional personality, can oppose bifurcation
(Laszlo, 1991) which is to be linked with the consumer society’s superficial attitude to issues of
ontology.
Chapter 2 THE DEVELOPMENT OF SELF-CARE-ORIENTED SECONDARY
SCHOOL LEARNERS’ SELF-EDUCATION DISCOURSE: DIDACTIC ASPECT
At creating the environment where secondary school learners can develop their self-
education discourse based on self-care, producing of an adequate didactic material is important.
The aim of the analysis of the didactic substantiation of curricula in ‘The Latvian Language“ and
56
“Literature” is 1) to study those pedagogical findings which may apply to designing
contemporary subject curricula and teaching materials, and 2) to analyze the designed didactic
material as an open, dialogic system.
While working on the designed didactic material, the researchers gained valuable
experience which was reflected in the self-education discourse. The didactic material and self-
care activated in it were correlated with the learners’ needs. The results obtained from the
qualitative and quantitative research were correlated with self-care as the desirable. Since on
finishing Class 12 secondary school learners take the centralized examination in “The Latvian
Language”, the produced didactic material was intended not only to help the learners develop
their personality and reflect it in their language, but also to assist them to prepare for this
examination. Therefore all didactic materials covered three basic aspects: basic skills and
knowledge, understanding a text and creating a text.
When designing “The Latvian Language” and “Literature” curricula, the three types of
cognition, observed within the frame of a teaching/learning process and spoken about by I. Žogla
(Žogla, 2001) in her book “Theoretical Basis of Didactics”, were taken into consideration.
The first of them is practical cognition, which relates to learning by doing. In “The Latvian
Language” curriculum, learning by doing concerns themes within the framework of which a
linguistic text analysis is made. To implement the content of education incorporated in these
themes, work sheets were designed. In “Literature” curriculum, learning by doing was
implemented by analyzing compositions of specific authors; presentations for the use at lessons
were produced (both in Powerpoint and ActiveInspire).
The second way of cognition – scientific cognition – is a typically purposeful, intensive
discovery of objectively new relationships. To implement this kind of cognition, learners’
preliminary preparedness is necessary. This kind of cognition has been integrated into “The
Latvian Language” and “Literature” curricula by making use of the theoretical (literary theory)
material which is offered to the learners.
The third aspect of cognition is a subjective discovery of something new. This is an
intensive way of cognition which takes place by making use of purposefully prepared teaching
aids, this aspect was accepted at
selecting fragments from thinkers’ works which are used at the lessons of the Latvian
language when the linguistic text analysis is made, and choosing fiction works which are
analyzed at literature lessons;
planning the number of lessons for each theme and work at every specific lesson.
57
When designing the ‘Latvian Language” and “Literature” curricula, in every class attention
was given to a definite aspect of cognitive activity:
during lessons in Class 10 literary-theoretical material was discussed;
in Class 11, theoretical postulates, concepts were integrated into the personal experience,
they were made part of secondary school learners’ active vocabulary;
in Class 12, secondary school learners’ world view is being developed, as well as the
nuances of its representation, and individual style.
Designing “The Latvian Language” and “Literature” curricula, media education concepts
were integrated into them:
the findings included in the work “Introduction to Media Pedagogy” by Z. Rubene, A.
Krūmiņa, I. Vanaga (Rubene, Krūmiņa, & Vanaga, 2008) were used;
the idea that the phenomenon of media in the 21st century culture is perceived as
something especially topical was accepted;
the structure and semantics of media are analyzed;
their influence on a consumer is considered;
strategies of media realization are developed;
P. Bourdieu’s (Бурдье, 2004, 2005, 2007) opinion, essential within the context of media,
was accepted: initially socium is polysemious, the existence and representation are
determined by a) the distribution of material resources and social values, b) perceptions,
thinking schemes and behavior, emotional assessment (a symbolic capital – prestige,
fame, respect) which in the contemporary culture are the equivalent of material values
(Bourdieu & Wacqant, 1992).
When designing “The Latvian Language” and “literature” curricula, the assumption was
accepted that the media environment has a direct bearing on the use of contemporary
technological achievements and information technologies, in order to make the learning process
more diverse and it would meet the secondary school learners’ needs. The use of technologies
gives the opportunity to diversify the teaching/learning and self-education process, thus making
it accessible to anyone according to anyone’s interests and possibilities.
Chapter 3 THE PROCESS AND RESULTS OF THE RESEARCH
3.1. The Methodology and Base of the Research Design
When undertaking the research, the environment where the secondary school learners
develop their self-education discourse based on self-care was assessed, since it was important to
choose an appropriate research strategy. On the basis of an activity approach and on the
58
experience-based approach to a specific case study, during the research a lasting cooperation
between the secondary school learners and a teacher (the author of the doctoral thesis) was
ensured. During the process of a longitudinal research, a common self-care-based platform was
formed whose elements changed during the research. The changes in secondary school learners’
discourse were analyzed: the structure (vocabulary and syntax) and semantics (expressed ideas)
of secondary school learners’ utterances were assessed. The longitudinal research provided the
opportunity of not only observing, creating and describing the environment during a three-year-
long period, but also of receiving feedback – to obtain the material about secondary school
learners’ opinion and potentialities at developing self-education discourse. The strategy of a
longitudinal case study research (Pipere, 2011) was chosen due to the fact that it enabled to
analyze the way how during a three-year-long period the secondary school learners develop their
self-care-based self-education discourse.
Both the qualitative and quantitative research methods were applied in the research, which
ensures the triangulation of the research. The longitudinal case study research was conducted in
one of Daugavpils minority schools from September 1, 2013 up to May 13, 2016 when
secondary school learners finished school (this lasted six semesters). At the beginning of the
research in 2013, 45 learners from Class 10 A and B took part in the research. In 2014 (Class
11), two learners changed a school, one learner came back from the exchange program to a
foreign country, - consequently, altogether 44 learners were involved in the research. In 2015
(Class 12), the number of secondary school learners did not change.
During the research, at creating the environment where the secondary school learners
develop their self-education discourse based on self-care, it was elucidated how a) learners’
feeling of belonging to culture changes, b) the structure and active vocabulary of learners’
utterances change.
To get feedback from learners about their attitude to self-care at developing self-education
discourse, an open questionnaire survey was offered to them, which was conducted in Class 10 at
the beginning of the first semester, and at the end of the second semester, in Class 11 at the end
of the first and second semester, and in Class 12 at the end of the first and second semester.
The method of direct pedagogical observation was applied during the research. During the
lessons of the Latvian language and literature, as well as during out-of-class activities, the direct
pedagogical observation was aimed at elucidating how secondary school learners’ attitude
towards the implementation of self-care and culture texts changes. The teaching/learning process
at lessons of the Latvian language and literature was organized so that the aspects of self-care
would be activated.
59
The results received in the centralized examination were taken as the objective result; secondary
school learners go in for the final examination in the Latvian language when graduating from
Class 12. The learners’ performance in the examination in “the Latvian Language” is assessed by
specialists not involved in the research. It was agreed that the research must not be divided into
parts: it lasts for six semesters. The research results obtained at the end of each semester were
described as a part of a pedagogical process. The criteria, indicating that self-care is being
implemented in the self-education discourse, are a) an original, cultural tradition-rooted
secondary school learners’ utterance (content level), b) clichés and verbal stereotypes are not
used (form level). In form and content, such utterance corresponds to the skills of text
understanding and text creation tested at the centralized examination.
3.2.The Development of Self-Care-Based Secondary School Learners’ Self-
Education Discourse within the Framework of the Subject “The Latvian
Language”
During the research, the environment where the secondary school learners develop their
self-education discourse based on self-care was assessed; it was important to systematize the data
obtained from the analysis of secondary school learners’ essays written as home assignments, as
well as those received from the direct pedagogical observation during the lessons. The aim of the
data analysis and systematization was to check how pedagogical findings activated at designing
didactic materials in “The Latvian Language” can be put into practice.
On developing self-education discourse at the lessons of the Latvian language, the
secondary school learners learnt how to construct a precise utterance (work on one’s active
vocabulary and syntactic constructions): during three years, tasks identical in form, but different
in content were fulfilled. This enabled mastering within the frame of definite parameters the
basic skills (skills of text understanding and text creating) specified in the requirements of the
subject standard, as well as developing self-care-based self-education discourse. The secondary
school learners fulfilled assignments oriented towards developing a) skill of text understanding
and b) skill of text creating.
On creating the environment where secondary school learners develop their self-education
discourse based on self-care, and fulfilling the curriculum requirements, during the lessons of the
Latvian language secondary school learners must be able to precisely formulate their opinion on
a specific theme – work sheets were worked out within the context of a linguistic analysis of the
text.
60
In Class 10, fragments from works by R. Bart, J. Boudrillard, A. Breton, N. Berdyaev and
J. Brodsky were offered to learners for the linguistic text analysis in the first semester. The
attention was focused on learners’ broadening their active vocabulary. At formulating the main
idea of the text, its theme, aim and topicality, learners have to express their opinion about the
system of ideas in the text (they have to use those lexemes, terms, categories which the author of
the text uses). The secondary school learners learnt to find in the texts different nuances, key
words. Spotting and reflection of nuances in the text created the greatest difficulties for the
learners in the first semester. In the context of text analysis, the author’s responsibility for the
created text was discussed – in Class 10, when constructing their utterances the learners did not
use the 1st person singular pronoun “I”, but instead - the 1
st person plural pronoun “we”. During
the first semester almost all learners accepted the idea that they had to take responsibility for
what they had written, and organically “we” replaced “I”. In Class 10, during the second
semester secondary school learners were offered fragments from works by I. Bergman, J. Ortega
y Gasset, M. Heidegger, H. L. Borhess, Epicurus, H. Hesse, D. Hume, A. Camus. For the
majority of learners, the dynamics of their text analysis was positive: inadequate words appeared
more seldom in the sentences, the idea was expressed more precisely.
The secondary school learners developed their skills of text creating also by writing essays
as their home assignments; the essays were written on a computer. The home assignment essays
displayed the same tendencies as the linguistic text analysis on work sheets. Part of secondary
school learners actualized self-care, integrated what they had read into their experience, provided
an original interpretation of the latter, while others tried to fix what they had heard in the
classroom and simply retold it in their home assignments without offering their own opinion in
the essays. A desire to be in keeping with the horizon of expectations was observed – the ideas
which might be liked were mechanically expressed; the suggestion that at analyzing home
assignment quality, an original idea would be most interesting, was ignored.
In Class 11, fragments from works by A. Camus, J. Liotar, M. Mamardashvily were
offered for text analysis to the learners in the first semester. The secondary school learners
managed to create precise utterances more frequently, there were fewer unnecessary words in the
sentences, and they accepted the idea that one sentence expressed one causal relationship. The
choice of vocabulary still presented certain difficulties: a pronounced lexical momentum was
observed; in writing, clichés did not disappear, while in speech they were deconstructed and
eradicated. Accepting the system of terminology offered in the texts, one and the same term was
frequently used for characterizing different systems. Certain complexities arose at stating one’s
opinion. Learners wanted to self-realize by criticizing a consumer society rather than by
61
demonstrating their own world view, where they would not only express independent ideas, but
would also make references to texts of culture.
In Class 11, at the beginning of a school year, plural constructions were again observed in
home assignment essays; instead of one’s own opinion the opinion of some conditional group
was expressed. The experience obtained by secondary school learners in the primary school was
much stronger than the material acquired in Class 10; it had been acquired, but not accepted to a
full extent. The essays of those learners, who had accepted the development of self-care-based
self-education discourse as a dialogue with culture, had become more complicated, they
demonstrated interesting ideas, and the syntax they used also had become more complex. Part of
learners had treated the development of self-education discourse as unimportant, assuming that
this approach was too time-consuming and did not suit them.
In Class 11, during the second semester, fragments from works by S. Blackburn, R.
Akutagava, M. Mamardashvilli, A. Losev, H. Arente, V. Mikushevich, G. S, Mill, B. Russell and
A. Rob-Grijē were offered to learners for the linguistic text analysis. The learners were
instructed to try to find in the fragment those things that were topical, and then they had to be
related to what already existed in the experience. The learners had to be able to identify key
words typical just of this text. At doing text linguistic analysis, learners discussed the text in
groups, together searched for key words, tried to clarify terms they did not understand well. The
secondary school learners continued with writing home assignment essays, and their essays
showed two tendencies – in fact, no verbal clichés were used in them, learners created their own
utterances; and in works by part of learners the number of mistakes diminished (which testified
to the fact that learners were working on their grammar and on the choice of active vocabulary).
In Class 12, during the first semester fragments from texts by R. Akutagava, C. Armstrong,
A. B. Olivia, S. Blackburn, M. Merlot-Ponti and B. Russell were given to the secondary school
learners for the linguistic text analysis. Basically, secondary school learners successfully coped
with the formulations of the main theme, main idea and the aim, while the formulation of
topicality created certain difficulties for them. On formulating the topicality, they either used
general words that can be applied to any text of culture, or they wrote very specifically, making
use of personal pronouns, speaking about themselves in the current situation. The text the
learners had produced showed that the learners know how to work with information, but they did
not always manage to integrate it into their own experience. In Class 12, during the first
semester, at giving the learners home assignment essays, they were asked to think of fragments
of those poets which had been discussed at literature lessons. This caused some discomfort
among part of the learners at the beginning of the semester: it was said that to write about poems
62
was much more difficult than about quotations from philosophers’ works. In the course of the
semester, situation gradually changed: the secondary school learners expressed a well-
substantiated, interesting and original opinion.
In Class 12, during the second semester, learners were offered fragments from works by H.
M. Encenbergs, K. Heins, I. Šlāpins, M. Zanders, P. Kropotkins and V. Sīlis. Cliches were again
actively used, but instead of “good – bad” the opposition “personality – uncritically thinking
consumer” was used; on the level of knowledge, the secondary school learners had assumed that
to be “a personality” is “good”, while to be “an uncritically thinking consumer” is not quite
good. Part of learners seemed to have put on masks of intellectuals which, to their mind,
guaranteed them successful social self-realization. The learners, who had accepted that the
intellectual self-discipline is valid, were successful in writing about their attitude to art work
when assessing the texts. The structure of utterances in essays had not basically changed:
learners who engaged in a dialogue with culture texts – poetry – spoke about their empathy;
those learners, who could not or did not wish to be open to the influence of the text, structured
their utterances on knowledge they had acquired during the previous semester.
During a three-year-long period of learning the Latvian language, secondary school
learners developed and perfected their skills of producing precise utterances and of adopting
their position by using specific linguistic means; the perception that it is just the language that
reflects personality’s characteristic features was made topical. Those secondary school learners
who had adopted self-care as the basis for the development of their self-education discourse
succeeded in developing their utterance, learnt to demonstrate their strengths, learnt to listen to
language and enter into a dialogue with it, assuming that a culture text is a partner of a dialogue
providing a personality with the opportunity to improve oneself.
That the environment oriented towards the development of secondary school learners’
self-education discourse, which had been paid much attention to during the lessons as well as
during out-of-class activities, is productive testifies the learners’ performance in the centralized
examination in “The Latvian Language” – the mean assessment for learners was 71.4%. For the
first part of the examination, where the basic skills and knowledge were tested, the assessment
was 74.5%; for the second part, where the understanding of the text was checked – 63.2%; for
the third part, where the learners’ skills of text creating were tested – 76.5%. Six learners had
passed the examination in “The Latvian Language” on “satisfactory” level, twenty eight - on
“optimal” level and ten learners – on “high” level. The mean indicators on the national level was
51.30%, in Daugavpils – 49.43%. According to the ratings of schools, the secondary school
63
learners of Daugavpils minority school involved in the research had passed their examination,
taking the eleventh place in the country.
3.3. The Development of the Self-Care-Based Secondary School Learners’ Self-
Education Discourse within the Framework of the Subject “Literature”
At assessing the environment where the secondary school learners develop their self-
education discourse based on self-care, it was essential to systematize the data obtained by
carrying out the direct pedagogical observations at literature lessons. At literature lessons, on
analyzing literary texts, secondary school learners speak about both things really essential for
them and those that are not acceptable to them. The analysis and systematization of information
accumulated during the pedagogical observation were aimed at verifying how pedagogical
findings activated at developing the didactic material in “Literature” are put into practice.
When creating the environment where secondary school learners develop their self-
education discourse based on self-care, a certain aggregate of texts was evaluated, allowing to
gain a perception about literature as a process. Following the standard and curriculum in
“Literature”, in Class 10, at the beginning of the first semester, a corpus of literary-theoretical
texts was made use of during literature lessons, thus allowing secondary school learners to
acquire a range of concepts for text analysis. In the first semester, Class 10, the Latvian fairy-tale
“Kurbads” and the second part of the book “Latvieši” [The Latvians] by G. Merķelis were
offered to the learners for reading and analysis. The scientific vocabulary was extended in
learners’ active vocabulary; and throughout the whole school-year it was supplemented and
evaluated.
In the second semester, Class 10, the secondary school learners were given works by E.
Veidenbaums, Aspazija and R. Blaumanis, thus broadening their knowledge about the
development of Latvian literature at the end of the 19th
century and at the beginning of the 20th
century. At analyzing these texts, learners successfully coped with the evaluation of the system
of ideas in the texts: they could identify what was common between the world perception of a
contemporary man and the ideas expressed in literature of the end of the 19th century and the
beginning of the 20th
century. However, the cultural context presented serious difficulties:
actually, the secondary school learners did not know about the social relations in the period
under discussion nor about the culture of social life.
During the first semester, Class 11, secondary school learners were offered to read and
analyze the plays “Uguns un nakts” [Fire and Night] and “Spēlēju, dancoju” [I Played, Danced]
by J. Rainis and literary fairy-tales “Kā es braucu Ziemeļmeitas lūkoties” [How I Went to Court
64
the Northern Maids] and “Bendes meitiņa” [Hangman’s Daughter] by K. Skalbe. In order the
learners could make a literary text analysis and provide their interpretation, much attention was
paid to the analysis of a context material (at the beginning of the semester the learners were
asked to read one New Testament book). The learners successfully analyzed the system of space
and ideas of texts, and identified interconnections between modernism and contemporary culture.
During the second semester, Class 11, secondary school learners were reading and
analyzing A. Čaks’ poetry and his “Mūžības skartie”, works “Iegatnīša” and “Mērkaķis” by J.
Ezeriņš, texts “Aiz paradīzes vārtiem” and “Kailā dzīviba” by A. Upīts, E. Virza’s work
“Straumēni” and were also introduced to the novel “Aija” by J. Jaunsudrabiņš (both by reading
fragments from it and watching its screen version). Making the literary text interpretation,
learners managed to create an original vision of the text. It should be emphasized that clichés
were avoided in the analysis made by the learners; if some occasionally appeared, they were
usually deconstructed in the group. The secondary school learners were aware of the fact that the
text analysis they had made characterized their own discursive position, that every utterance
conveyed information about their vision of the world and their ability to judge the situation
described in the text from the aspect of culture.
In Class 12, learners were offered to read and contemplate on the Latvian poetry of the
second half of the 20th
century and the beginning of the 21st century. Texts of poetry provide a
concise and maximally precise utterance, and, consequently, secondary school learners can learn
how to create maximally concentrated utterances. In the first semester, Class 12, learners were
offered poetry written by V. Belševica, I. Ziedonis, O. Vācietis, R. Mūks, V. Sniķere, J. Helds, P.
Brūveris. At the beginning of a lesson, learners were shown video fragments demonstrating
either interview fragments, or poets reading their own poetry. The task of the analysis of video
fragments was to create the feeling of presence. Learners succeeded in analyzing poetry texts;
decoding of images and symbols of poetry texts was easier for them, while formulating thoughts
and ideas of a poem was much more complicated.
In the second semester, Class 12, learners read and analyzed texts created by L. Briedis, G.
Godiņš, E. Raups, I. Jansone, J. Elsbergs, K. Vērdiņš, I. Gaile and P. Draguns. At literature
lessons the discussion was organized to attract learners’ attention to the way how a precise
utterance is formed in poetry. The idea that only through holding the dialogue with culture it is
possible to learn to precisely express one’s thoughts was emphasized. In order to enter in
dialogue with culture, a personality has to learn to be open to impressions, has to abandon using
clichés in one’s language.
65
During a three-year period, secondary school learners had a dialogue with literary texts,
and they became open to unknown emotional experience. True, not all learners manage to be
open to text. Part of learners, either deliberately or non-deliberately, did not create their own
utterances, but instead made use of traditional clichés which do not require any reflection and
provide only a simplified assessment for the characterization of the situation.
3.4.The Development of Self-Care-Based Secondary School Learners’ Self-
Education Discourse during Out-Of-Class Activities
On assessing the environment where secondary school learners develop their self-
education discourse based on self-care, it was vital to systematize information obtained from the
direct pedagogical observation during the out-of-class activities. The aim of the analysis and
systematization of this information was to find out whether a) the secondary school learners’
self-education discourse is carried out in the out-of-class environment, b) values declared by
school are put into action.
In order secondary school learners could gain a clear perception of Latvian culture, they
were offered to participate in educational excursions, during which they attended different
cultural events and theatre performances in Riga. Since the environment dominating in
Daugavpils is multicultural and there are not many elements of Latvian culture, such educational
excursions and attendance of cultural events and theatrical performances would contribute to the
development of secondary school learners’ perception about the Latvian culture.
In the first semester, Class 10, the school trip to the performance “Austrumvējš,
rietumvējš” in Riga Jaunais Teātris was organized, and the learners also had the opportunity to
see the annual “Staro Rīga” light installations. After the excursion, the learners wrote that the
attendance of the performance might be considered as successful, since they had gained a
valuable cultural experience. They also mentioned the opportunity of getting in touch with the
Latvian culture, which is not very characteristic of the cultural environment of Daugavpils.
The second trip for educational purposes was organized in the second semester, Class 10:
the learners were offered to attend the performance “Parīzes Dievmātes katedrāle” in Riga
National Theatre. When evaluating the performance, the secondary school learners wrote that
they considered the attendance of the performance successful because a) they heard good music
during the performance; b) the performance was based on a touching love story. They also noted
that they had been to a contemporary opera performance for the first time, and this had
broadened their cultural experience; it was even of minor importance whether you liked the
performance or not, it was an impulse that made you think about what you had seen.
66
During the first semester, Class 11, the attitude to attending cultural events had changed,
the attempts to organize the attendance of a theatre performance failed, since there were too few
learners who wished to go. The discussion revealed the problem situation: attending cultural
events involves spending money, and the secondary school learners were not ready to do it. In
Class 11, learners did not want to learn from cultural texts, but rather to represent themselves.
Part of the learners willingly participated in different competitions. During the first semester, the
most essential achievement was the first prize won in the competition “Eiropas pēdas Latvijā”
[Traces of Europe in Latvia] organized by the EU Home and European Movement in Latvia. The
learners had produced a video material about their city.
During the 2nd
semester, Class 11, the secondary school learners continued participating in
competitions of different level organized in Latvia and the European Union. The secondary
school learners participated in the competition organized by the EU Social Affairs Committee,
where they had to produce the interpretation of the European Union Anthem demonstrating how
the authors of the video-clip feel themselves in Europe. In the competition, with 50 video-clips
sent in from all the EU countries participating in it, their video-clip was given the seventh place.
During this competition, the learners learnt to work in a team, to take responsibility for
themselves and others, to feel themselves as part of their city, state and Europe. Secondary
school learners acquired the skill of working with mass media, giving interviews. Class 11 was
finished with an ecologically-oriented field trip: learners went to the DU study and research base
“Ilgas” where they spent two days. It was important not only to become part of the cultural
environment, but also feel oneself as a personality belonging to the environment.
During the first semester, Class 12, a part of learners attended the performance “Mazais
princis” [Little Prince] in Youth Theatre and the performance “Pūt, vējiņi” [Blow, Winds] in
Liepāja Theatre. The discussions held with the learners after the performance and their home
assignment essays testified to the fact that the themes explored in the theatre performances had
been vital for the learners. Some secondary school learners considered that in order to express
one’s own opinion culture texts were necessary as sources of inspiration. A team of learners
“Generatio” participated in the competition “Traces of Europe in Latvia” organized by European
Movement in Latvia; they reached the final and were awarded a trip to Stockholm. In the second
semester, Class 12, the secondary school learners had to get ready for their examinations and
therefore the participation in competitions was not topical for them. In February, thanks to
Sandra Kalniete’s support, those learners, who had participated in the competition organized by
the EU Social Affairs Committee, went for a trip to Brussels.
67
The out-of-class activities, which the learners participated in during a three-year period,
broadened their vision, gave them the opportunity to gain the perception of cultural traditions in
Latvia and Europe, enabled them to understand the place of every participant in this process.
Secondary school learners learnt by doing, developed their perception of certain behavioral
models applied in different situations, developed their self-education discourse by analyzing and
coordinating horizon of their expectations with the actual situation.
3.5.Analysis and Interpretation of the Results Obtained from Secondary School
Learners’ Questionnaire Survey
At assessing the environment where secondary school learners develop their self-education
discourse based on self-care, it was vital to create a mechanism of feedback within the frame of
which learners could express their opinion on different aspects of self-care. The analysis and
systematization of the obtained information were aimed at clarifying whether and how secondary
school learners’ perception of self-care changes.
On analyzing and interpreting learners answers received from open questionnaires, the
method of qualitative analysis (discourse analysis) was applied. The qualitative analysis method
was chosen due to the fact that within the self-care-based self-education discourse it reveals
more precisely essential parameters: a) secondary school learners create/do not create a precise,
original, with culture correlated utterance; b) language clichés are/ are not used in the utterance.
The first two questions of the open questionnaire are: “In my opinion, a personality is…”
and “I don’t consider myself a personality, because…”
At the beginning of the 1st semester in Class 10, providing answers to these questions,
secondary school learners tried to define themselves by employing usual, everyday situations.
They used the experience gained at a primary school as the basis: everyday situations were used,
such lexemes as “society”, “other people’s opinion”, “the same as other people” were important.
Personality was related to the skill of becoming part of some social group by interacting with the
society. At the end of the 2nd
semester in Class 10, a personality was no longer linked with an
everyday life situation: a personality was viewed as being a self-value which is to be related to
culture. Though the answers revealed elements of genotext, they had become more personal. The
opinion was expressed that for the time being it was difficult to say whether a secondary school
learners are personalities since they do not completely understand reasons for their actions, they
do not have sufficient cultural experience. Secondary school learners actively use the new
vocabulary acquired during the school year.
68
At the end of the 1st semester in Class 11, the terminology, which had become organic for
them during a three-semester period, was integrated into secondary school learners’ utterances;
the majority of learners had broadened their reading experience. The learners write that they
deliberately put themselves in opposition to the discourse of a consumer society, they are not
afraid to express their own opinion because they take it for a self-value. The development of
their own originality is essential for secondary school learners, which is possible at being attuned
to texts of culture. At the end of the 2nd
semester in Class 11, the secondary school learners write
using concepts rather than characterizations of a situation. Learners create their utterance
deliberately, they have learnt to speak about themselves without feeling uneasy about their
feelings, instead language clichés they choose language means typical of them.
At the end of the 1st semester in Class 12, secondary school learners write that to be a
personality implies going through a definite process and achieving results – it is defined as
developing and achieving aims set to oneself. Personality is related to such skills as an extended,
deep analysis, as non-compliance with the determination of conditions, as the ability of self-
realizing in various situations, of expressing a substantiated opinion and adequately responding
to the events in the society. Secondary school learners consider themselves personalities since
their experience is rooted in cultural text they have analyzed: it gives the opportunity to be self-
sufficient, defining one’s opinion. At the end of the 2nd
semester in Class 12, the learners write
that a personality is ready to gain, assess and analyze the experience. A personality has a definite
attitude towards events and phenomena, this attitude is precisely defined. A personality makes
their judgments on the basis of knowledge rather than on emotions, a personality is rational
rather than spontaneous and is aware that he exists in a changeable world, but defines it on the
basis of knowledge. Personality is related to the skill of critically perceiving what is happening
around you, to the skill of being able to become part of the system finding there your own place
and improving the system. A personality wants to become a professional.
Secondary school learners have accepted a definite cultural code as knowledge, and
knowledge has been developed during a three-year time; learners know how the concept of
personality is interpreted in the context of contemporary European culture. Answers given to this
question characterize just the secondary school learners’ knowledge.
The third question of the open questionnaire “In my opinion, freedom is…” gives the
learners the opportunity to define the category of freedom.
At the beginning of Class 10, freedom for them implies the opportunity of not listening to,
of acting without anybody’s consent, of being independent. They express a view that freedom is
relative, that the only freedom possible is inner freedom, since a personality is always
69
determined by the society. At the end of the 2nd
semester of Class 10, secondary school learners
write that freedom can be differentiated – physical, if the value is an opportunity of unlimited
action, and spiritual, if the value is the independence of thoughts and opinions. Learners
differentiate between inner and external freedom, they do not treat a human like a system, but
rather like a dual formation. They speak about the category of responsibility, however, they do
not express a desire to take responsibility upon themselves, but rather to lay it on other people.
At the end of the 1st semester in Class 11, secondary school learners correlate freedom with
time, freedom is linked with conscious existence, with living through the present moment. The
conception of freedom is related to one’s own existence, secondary school learners are ready to
be in opposition to a consumer society. Freedom is the desirable, it is the opportunity of self-
realizing, of developing the self. At the end of the 2nd
semester in Class 11, the given definitions
of freedom are interesting and original. In different contexts, the learners write about self-
confidence, responsibility, opportunities of self-development. Freedom implies the possibility of
not making use of clichés and elements of geno-text when creating one’s own texts, it is an
opportunity to produce a clear message, to think first of the semantics and structure of the
utterance and only later about the target audience.
At the end of the 1st semester in Class 12, secondary school learners write that freedom is a
possibility to accept and employ the opportunity of choice. Freedom is viewed within the context
of dialogue and cultural environment – it is an opportunity of developing one’s personality
without succumbing to alien ideas, an opportunity of shaping one’s ideology; the implementation
of personality’s freedom does not inconvenience other people. Freedom is a possibility of
implementing different cultural archetypes – those of a Trixter, a rebel, the Other.
At the end of the 2nd
semester in Class 12, freedom is linked with personality’s skill and
ability to change. Freedom implies the possibility to implement your ideas yourself, without the
assistance of others, the opportunity to exist without wearing a mask, without adapting to alien
images, freedom is creating one’s own space where you would feel comfortable. Freedom
attracts and inhibits simultaneously, and a personality both tends towards it and shirks it.
At characterizing the category of freedom, a part of learners made use of their knowledge
about cultural code acquired in the secondary school when analyzing literary, scientific and
philosophical texts. The vocabulary establishing inter-textual links with thinker’s works was
used.
Giving the answers to the forth question (“I can/cannot make a free choice, because…”)
secondary school learners evaluated their opportunities of making a choice.
70
At the beginning of the 1st semester in Class 10, learners treat themselves not like
autonomous personalities but like elements of the society who constantly adapt their actions to
the opinion of others. Secondary school learners write that the opinion of other people is
important for them. At the end of the 2nd
semester in Class 10, secondary school learners
maintain that the opportunity to choose is determined by the fact that they have not yet
developed as self-sufficient personalities and therefore their choice is determined. When you
become a personality, freedom of choice is present automatically. They write also that freedom
of choice is initially inherent, it is a way to personality. Choice depends on whether a personality
is confident of oneself, is ready to act without coordinating one’s actions with the opinion of
others.
At the end of the 1st semester in Class 11, free choice exists in the space of formal
restrictions, imposed by the regulations of the establishment, national laws, and it is
implemented as a condition for the development of self-discipline, as an opportunity to develop
oneself, taking into consideration the situation, both becoming part of it and shaping it. External
factors are still dominant. At the end of the 2nd
semester in Class 11, free choice is implemented,
if the assessment of the action is not expected, it is the expression of an original opinion. Free
choice bears on self-realization, on achieving certain results, it is a free text-creation, choice of
definite signs and code and one’s identification with it.
At the end of the first semester in Class 12, a free choice can be made due to the fact that
certain cultural experience has been already obtained. Choice is being linked with the category of
responsibility, will – will determines existence. Among factors that hinder making a free choice
they mention feeling sorry for oneself. At the end of the 2nd
semester in Class 12, free choice is
related to the category of responsibility: to assume responsibility the situation should be analyzed
and understood first; free choice is linked with a rational assessment rather than with an
emotional response. Free choice is an opportunity to overcome fear and doubt. To be able to
make a free choice, you should learn not to think about how much you meet the horizon of other
people’s expectations, you should not think about definite social standards.
When the answers to the fifth and sixth questions were provided (“I am/am not responsible
for what I myself do…”, “I am/am not responsible for what is happening around me…”), the
secondary school learners were offered to evaluate the category of responsibility, first relating it
to themselves, then to the context within which they exist.
At the beginning of the 1st semester in Class 10, responsibility is linked not only with the
reflection on what has been done, but also with the situation of punishment; punishment is
considered synonymous with responsibility. Learners assume that those are not they who analyze
71
their mistakes, but rather somebody else punishes them for these mistakes. At the end of the 2nd
semester in Class 10, responsibility is taken on only for one’s own actions or for what is
happening in the nearest vicinity. Responsibility is perceived as what is necessary, what is
habitual, and what is not really worth reflection or discussion.
At the end of the 1st semester in Class 11, secondary school learners are ready to assume
responsibility, since they are aware of causes and consequences of their actions; they are an
active part of culture who, by developing themselves, develop also a cultural text and influence
the society. At the end of the 2nd
semester in Class 11, they note that responsibility for one’s own
words and deeds is a compulsory prerequisite for the existence of a personality, since a
personality himself is the author of his life/text who should not abandon the ideas defined by
himself. Responsibility is linked with the style of adult’s existence, coming of age changes the
social status and self-confidence.
At the end of the 1st semester in Class 12, responsibility is related also to personality’s
representation in deeds – any action is a possibility “to read” a personality, to understand it.
Responsibility is evaluated within the context of lies and truth – to be responsible implies not
lying to oneself. Responsibility is related to self-control. At the end of the 2nd
semester Class 12,
responsibility is defined as one of the basic features of a personality. Responsibility is linked
with modelling of the situation – first it is evaluated, possible models are analyzed and only then
it is implemented. Responsibility is compared to text creating, just like the author cannot give up
his text, a personality cannot give up one’s life because this leads to personality’s destruction,
personality is destroyed from inside.
At assessing their responsibility for what is existing next to them, secondary school
learners state their opinion as to the relations between a personality and environment, which
bears on the statement “I am/am not responsible for what is happening around me…”.
At the beginning of the 1st semester in Class 10, learners write that they are not ready for
assuming responsibility for what is happening around them. Responsibility is related to a
control situation; secondary school learners write that they are not ready for controlling other
people. At the end of the 2nd
semester in Class 10, they still do not express wish to take
responsibility for what is happening around them, responsibility is spoken about within the
context of their future. Responsibility is linked with the evaluation of deeds and behavior of
other people, without taking responsibility for other people and processes in the society.
At the end of the 1st semester in Class 11, the learners’ opinion has partly changed. Some
learners are already ready to assume responsibility for what is happening around them. Besides,
responsibility is not related to a trivial coexistence, it is philosophically based positioning in the
72
socium. At the end of the 2nd
semester in Class 11, learners write that responsibility should be
linked with what a personality oneself has created, rather than with what other people have done.
We should be responsible for those who coexist with us within the frame of one system, since
the existence of the system depends on actions of any personality.
At the end of the 1st semester in Class 12, secondary school learners write that they are
responsible for what is happening around them, since they too are participants of the situation
and, consequently, set the course of the situation development. Responsibility for other people is
related to the assumption that while existing in some space, one becomes aware of its
regularities, and the understanding involves responsibility. At the end of the 2nd
semester in
Class 12, secondary school learners are able to take responsibility for what is happening around
them: they are ready to assume responsibility for those who coexist with them because they build
up relationships with peers, influence the process on the whole, they feel responsible for it.
The seventh question (“I relate the meaning of the word “self-care” to…”) gave the
opportunity to learners to interpret the process at characterizing the word “self-care”.
At the beginning of the 1st semester in Class 10, the learners were asked to speak about the
associations the word evokes for them. At the beginning of the 1st semester in Class 10, self-care
is linked with everyday duties, with the existence of one’s body. At the end of the 2nd
semester in
Class 10, the trivial interpretation of one’s existence is observed in fewer cases, however this
opinion still exists. Answers of some learners show that a personality is perceived as a system
formed by the mental and physical existence, however, either only the mental or only the
physical aspect of personality was mentioned, assuming that a personality is dual.
At the end of the 1st semester in Class 11, secondary school learners positioned themselves
as being physical and intellecual beings, and they should be developed by paying attention to
both aspects. They especially focus on a conscious existence of their being in time: they
emphasize the analytical activity, the necessity of creating their own original utterances, of
developing pheno-text and analyzing the geno-text. At the end of the 2nd
semester in Class 11,
self-care is linked with the development and preserving of one’s individuality. Self-care is
related to the category of work, which testifies to the growth of a personality, and also to the
category of independence – a personality should create a system of perceptions, has to focus on
self-education, must not succumb to certain ideologies.
At the end of the 1st semester in Class 12, self-care implies collecting oneself and
analyzing, an opportunity to gain experience and analyze it. Self-care is linked with the situation
of everyday cognition – you should analyze yourself as particularly and deeply as a cultural text.
At the end of the 2nd
semester in Class 12, self-care associates with doing everyday mental and
73
physical work. Some learners have accepted self-care as the opportunity for their existence.
During private talks, they mention that they are not able and they don’t always know how to
analyze the causes of their actions, and that they think they do not do sufficiently intensive
mental and physical work.
To give answers to the eighth question (“I take care of myself by…”), secondary school
learners were asked to think about what they are doing to develop and change their personalities.
In answers given at the beginning of the 1st semester in Class 10, learners associate self-
care with organization, planning of their daily work, with daily activities. At the end of the 2nd
semester in Class 10, some learners note that for the present moment self-care is not sufficiently
emphasized, that for the time being they gain experience from everyday situations rather than
from culture texts.
At the end of the 1st semester in Class 11, secondary school learners write that changes,
self-development take place in a situation where you feel safe, cozy and comfortable. Self-care is
related to an analytical activity, to identifying causes, to self-understanding and positioning in
the context of culture texts. At the end of the 2nd
semester in Class 11, they write that self-care
materializes as a balance between a daily mental and physical existence, self-care should be
regular. Self-care is linked with the situation of choice, creating the environment for one’s
existence which is supposed to facilitate rather than hinder the development of personality.
At the end of the 1st semester in Class 12, important for the learners is analysis which
enables to understand oneself, to realize one’s existence within the frame of a social and
economic system, understanding the causal relationships that exist in it. Self-care is associated
with broadening of one’s experience: when you face an unfamiliar culture, you have the
opportunity to explore it and integrate it into your own experience. At the end of the 2nd
semester
in Class 12, self-care is very essential, it is related to both mental and physical work. The
learners write that taking care of oneself implies identifying one’s shortcomings and trying to
overcome them. It is vital not only to analyze the situation, but to model it beforehand, to avoid
unpleasant impressions and frustration.
In the ninth question (I can/cannot take care of other people…), at expressing their opinion
about how they could take care of other people, the learners were asked to reflect on expanding
the sphere of their influence.
At the beginning of the 1st semester in Class 10, learners wrote that they are able to take
care of other people in everyday situations, that taking care of other people is more complicated
than taking care of oneself. At the end of the 2nd
semester in Class 10, they write that care should
74
be first taken of oneself and only then of other people, and that other people should be taken care
of only, if they wish it; and whether their wish is true is difficult to say.
At the end of 1st semester in Class 11, the learners mention that they strongly wish to help
other people to understand something, to help them to give up the utilitarian vision of the world,
but it is impossible. The dominant position is – I wish my peers could understand what I have
understood, however I know that this is impossible. At the end of the 2nd
semester in Class 11,
the learners write that if you are taking care of another person you should create a united system
with this person, which would destroy the initial system. A model based on a deliberate
estrangement is being created; it enables you not to undertake the duty of taking care, and not to
experience anguish at the same time.
At the end of the 1st semester in Class 12, the learners write that other people can be taken
care of as far as they are not inconvenienced by it, any care involves a selfish desire; in everyday
situations care may manifest itself as a support, but it cannot materialize as a lasing mental
process. At the end of the 2nd
semester in Class 12, secondary school learners mainly maintain
that they cannot take care of other people, since they cannot influence other people’s life,
opinions and thoughts. They mention self-care as a possible variant of personality
transformation, however any individual must make his own choice.
Within the frame of the open questionnaire, the secondary school learners were asked to
mention and characterize the basic elements of their value system – the ninth question (“I
consider my values…”); it was indicated in the questionnaire how the values should be
mentioned: the instructions given before filling in the questionnaires told the learners that it
would be desirable to characterize the values, but the characterization depends on learners
themselves.
At the beginning of the 1st semester in Class 10, the syndrome of “a very easy task” was
observed; in the primary school, values were often talked about, frequently about what the
“right” values were. When characterizing their values, the learners interpret them on the
everyday life level, linking them with daily situations; they don’t display a tendency of viewing
values as an axiological system. At the end of the 2nd
semester in Class 10, secondary school
learners basically mention values rather than characterize them in detail. Less attention is given
to the description of everyday situations: they try to assess themselves attuning to culture, they
try to generalize, and develop a system. However, stereotyped answers remain still, secondary
school learners are not ready to think about themselves.
At the end of the 1st semester in Class 11, learners mention the values formally, they write
that the existence in a changeable world does not allow defining values. The answers lack
75
extended explanations still; there are words whose semantics is not specified. At the end of the
2nd
semester in Class 11, a well-considered characterization of values was provided: they
mention a) social skills - a skill of using different social codes in the communication with
various social groups; b) psychological skills – overcoming one’s fear, ability of controlling
one’s emotions, clarity of thought; c) responsibility and self-care – if a person is unable to take
care of oneself, he would hardly be able to help other people.
At the end of the 1st semester, Class 12, learners write that a value must be changeable so
that it would not interfere with enjoying life, so that it would help a person to understand oneself
and change. Learners are often anxious about whether they would manage to remain as
personalities, whether they would manage to resist the life style of a consumer society. At the
end of the 2nd
semester in Class 12, learners provide extended value descriptions or mention
those which they have formulated in the result of reflection; education is mentioned as a
possibility to become a professional, a possibility to enter the labor market and realize one’s life
as a story of success.
In the eleventh question of the open qualitative questionnaire (At defining the self-care
process, reading, writing, assessing one’s own daily actions, reflection on death, on taking care
and developing one’s body are frequently mentioned as the most essential components. Which of
the mentioned elements would you consider the most essential, why?), several self-care aspects
were mentioned, and secondary school learners were asked to assess and tell which of them
seemed essential for them.
At assessing this question of the qualitative questionnaire, learners’ answers given in the
questionnaires (“I and culture text”, “I and creation of the text”) were used as a context. To
have a full notion about the feedback provided by the closed and open questionnaires, the
method of quantitative and qualitative data analysis was applied. Within the frame of the
research, a qualitative method was primarily applied. As the scope of the doctoral thesis is
restricted, the analysis and interpretation of the material provided by the quantitative
questionnaires are given in the appendix.
At the beginning of the 1st semester, Class 10, learners express the idea that a personality
should be perceived as a system: this idea evolves within the context of taking care of one’s body
– learners write that one’s body must be looked after, and one’s visual image must be attractive
for other people. Learners’ answers show a dual approach – body and spirit are taken separately.
At the end of the 2nd
semester in Class 10, there emerges the idea that a human should be viewed
as one system where the body and mental development are a united process; the learners’
76
answers reveal that they pay more attention to looking after their body than to their intellectual
development.
At the end of the 1st semester in Class 11, secondary school learners write also that to
single out one of the elements is not quite right, because, if a human is assumed as a system, then
taking care of all elements of the system is equally essential. Care about one’s body is compared
to the development of form, while other self-care elements – to the development of the content.
At the end of the 2nd
semester in Class 11, self-care is interpreted as an opportunity of adapting
to conditions, of implementing the compliance with the horizon of expectations. The answers
testify to the fact that learners are still in the process, but they are not sure whether self-care is
the way suitable for them.
At the end of the 1st semester, Class 12, learners assess the aspects of self-care and choose
those which are most essential for them. They mention the analysis of one’s deeds as one of the
most important aspects. At the end of the 2nd
semester, Class 12, learners note that they try to
analyze every action, identifying their causes and trying to understand their mistakes in order to
avoid them in future. Learners express the opinion that activating self-care in one’s experience
creates inner and external peace and stability, harmony with oneself, it helps to exist in the
changeable world, in the changeable cultural situation.
CONCLUSIONS
Having summarized the results obtained from the analysis of theoretical literature and
information gained from the empiric research, the following conclusions have been made during
the process of writing the doctoral thesis;
1. Self-education discourse based on self-care is related to secondary school learners’ self-
realization in a language, assuming that a discourse is a) language means; b) signs characterizing
a visual image. Language can be considered a mirror of a personality: if a personality changes,
personality’s representation in a language also changes (in detail). At analyzing the form and
content of utterances, it is possible to evaluate what has changed in learners’ self-education
discourse during a specific period of time.
2. Self-care brought into focus in the self-education discourse is the aspect of art of life – a
philosophical practice within whose frame secondary school learners accept that at developing
oneself a) care should be taken of one’s spiritual world (reading, writing, telling the truth,
reflecting on death, fixing changes in oneself), b) of one’s physical body (physical exercises,
restricting oneself). At developing their self-education discourse, learners are aware of
themselves as of a) part of culture (freely use signs topical in culture, know their synchronic and
77
diachronic aspect); b) develop their own utterances in which the traditional signs obtain a new
semantic shade.
3. Within the context of self-education discourse based on self-care the concepts of media
education are made topical, and this allows a personality to deconstruct the discourse of a
consumer society (consuming as a life style):
a) a consumer society is oriented towards consuming things and processes (consuming is end in
itself), while a self-care-based self-education discourse is oriented towards developing a
personality; secondary school learners avoid using clichés (by deconstructing stereotypes and
simulacra), seek for their own way of expression which is based on the assessment of culture
texts;
b) a consumer society is a community where things not people coexist (like things, people
become a function), while a self-care-base self-education discourse is oriented towards the
assessment, reflection;
c) in a consumer society information is consumed, accepted, while within the frame of a self-
care-based self-education discourse information is analyzed in order to know oneself: like a
mirror culture texts show a personality, allow a personality to be on the way towards
understanding oneself;
d) a consumer society consumes understandable, simplified art (social strata have become
materially independent enough, and are interested in satisfying not only their primary
physiological needs, but also in art), while a self-care-based self-education discourse is based on
the analysis of complicated texts and art works (this expands the limits of personality’s semantic
field, allowing to understand the other, the different);
e) a consumer society constitutes the “silent majority” which is not ready to express and defend
one’s viewpoint, while within the framework of a self-care-based self-education discourse a
valid, well-substantiated, culture-rooted, precise utterance is expressed, stating the truth of the
present moment;
4. On designing “The Latvian Language” and “Literature” curricula, developing the didactic
materials and analyzing learners’ utterances, discourse analysis method was applied and the
following theoretical conceptions were accepted:
a) a personality perceives the world and also self-realizes through language means: there is no
utterance that would exist outside the context of cultural experience;
b) by means of language not only what already exists is reconstructed, but the existence itself is
created;
78
c) physical objects exist, however they take on their meaning only when they exist within the
frame of a discourse; the change of a discourse implies the transformation of a socium,
personality’s self-education environment;
d) a discourse cannot be finished, and completely developed: a discourse analysis is aimed not at
showing the truth as such, but at revealing how the truth is perceived at the moment of analysis;
e) the identity of a personality develops by being represented in a discourse: the utterance
consists of a string of original or borrowed signs; a discourse consists of signs, myths, causal
relationships (which determine making signs topical), concepts, which are related to searching
for one’s identity;
f) a discourse analysis is directly related to knowledge organization (devising of a specific
strategy): when developing their self-care-based self-education discourse, secondary school
learners select language means, cultural signs of which the identity consists. During the process
of positioning, the relationship between the though and its verbalization, determined by the
pragmatic context, is expressed in a discourse (the pragmatic context consists not only of social
and cultural, but also of biological conditions);
g) at developing one’s own discursive position, a personality coordinates it with the power and
political discourse which is characterized by:
stagnation, hierarchical order of nominations;
aggressiveness – is used for manipulating;
desire to create an illusion of invariability and stability: knowledge that initially is
nominal is being activated;
nouns and adjectives dominate: nomination of elements of being, not taking their
procedural nature into account;
predictability – a consumer does not wish to face any surprise;
h) a discourse is considered to be a communicative event;
i) in the discourse, the different is being made topical (may materialize as language clichés
borrowed from an uncritically accepted discourse or cultural sign, which have been deliberately
integrated in personality’s value system). If a culture paradigm is taken uncritically, then a) a
personality may become a mouthpiece of a discourse (reflects only the utterances of others in
speech), b) clichés, stereotyped word combinations, trivial metaphors are extensively used in the
utterance (a reference to the belonging to a certain discourse, the utterance does not have an
individual semantics);
79
j) a discourse has developed as a system of historically affected utterances, accepted in a
language as clichés and incomprehensible without the knowledge of the context - consequently,
at developing their self-education discourse as a representation of their search for identity, the
secondary school learners should differentiate signs borrowed from different culture texts;
k) there is no initially ready message, it develops during a dialogue (the author and text); a
discourse cannot be initially inherent, it develops continuously, integrating into itself the present
moment experience and transforming, re-evaluating signs and symbols within the frame of the
discourse;
l) a discourse and utterances have their own typical syntax, whose constructions get their
semantics even without their lexical expression.
5. A self-education discourse is oriented towards the acceptance, analysis and integration into the
experience of a complicated cultural product, thereby creating a perception about causal
relationships prevailing in any field of human activity, and enabling to elucidate the real rather
than formal causes. At developing a self-education discourse based on self-care, learners become
aware of a poly-semantic character, inter-textual nature of any phenomenon and event,
understand it and can find solutions to complicated problem situations (by modelling several
variants).
6. For a learner who develops a self-education discourse based on self-care values are:
tolerance and understanding - the other, the different can be looked at from the aspect
unessential before;
freedom and responsibility – freedom provides the opportunity of choice: this is a cause
for the consequences of which responsibility is taken on by a person who has made a
choice;
a dialogue with culture – the discourse of a consumer society and power is deconstructed;
a cultural tradition is perceived as an opportunity for getting to know and transforming
oneself;
self-image – it materializes in a virtual and real space, it consists of signs which precisely
express the message intended by a person;
an interesting, original viewpoint, a private communication possibility – which pertains
not only to the real, but also to virtual communication, possibility to trust;
relations with the economic situation – considers oneself a participant rather than an
employee, and does not associate oneself with some definite corporative environment;
80
transitoriness, fragmentariness - the action requires maximal efficiency and
concentration, only then a personality would be able to meet the demand – would be
interesting for others.
7. During the research, on verifying the designed “The Latvian Language” and “Literature”
curricula and didactic material, the following conclusions were drawn:
the introduction of the concept of media education provides the opportunity to create the
environment where secondary school learners develop their self-education discourse by
holding a dialogue with complicated culture texts, correlate with them their own value
system and shape their attitude towards the phenomenon of self-care;
the use of complicated texts (fragments of philosophical works, scientific texts) in the
educational process is justified, since thereby learners’ self-education discourse is
developed, focusing on a precise utterance as an opportunity for the development and
representation of a personality;
in secondary school learners’ self-education discourse, self-care is implemented
assuming that culture and personality are open systems which, assuming a language as an
opportunity for transformation and representation, exist in mutual relations, moreover,
secondary school learners recognize their responsibility for cultural processes.
RECOMMENDATIONS TO TEACHERS
1. To create the environment where secondary school learners can develop their self-education
discourse based on self-care, a language is to be perceived as a dialogue with The Other/The
Different in which The Other/The Different is
a) cultural tradition, reflected in which a personality may have an impulse to understand the self
and the regularities prevailing in the world;
b) a partner in a conversation who is beside a personality implementing a self-education
discourse based on self-care – a communication during which a personality is reflected in the
consciousness of The Other/The Different;
c) processes of sub-consciousness which engage in dialogue with consciousness in dreams,
nightmare, works of art, text creation, using certain signs which indicate to work of sub-
consciousness.
2. Texts, the learners correlate their experience with, must be complicated, such that encourage
thinking about ontological and axiological issues.
81
3. Language used by the secondary school learners represents the self-education discourse based
on self-care; it is both a possibility for developing a personality and the material enabling to fix
changes in a personality, therefore a language is treated taking into consideration the fact that
a) we should use a polysemous utterance based on paradox, nonsense as an opportunity to
acknowledge opposite (but existing simultaneously) aspects of a phenomenon;
b) we should realize that important are irony and witticism which deconstruct personality’s self-
sufficiency and do not allow to make a compromise with the horizon of social expectations;
c) we should learn to create an abstract (intellect construction-rooted) utterance existing outside
the limits of daily experience;
d) we should avoid idle talk and clichés (created by socially marked stereotypes), historical and
social myths;
e) we should take into consideration both the semantics of signs used in the utterance and the fact
that any discourse has its own internal regularities;
f) we should accept that any sign system is to be perceived as a single unique utterance whose
author is responsible for what he has created; any act of creation may take place only once, the
repetition of it is plagiarism;
g) we should realize that a discourse is the acceptance of relations between the chosen signs, the
utterance involves signs having definite semantics (synchronic and diachronic aspect), but in the
utterance they get new nuances;
h) we should be aware of the fact that mortal are not only people , but also words; the life of a
word incorporated in the utterance is limited in time.
4.At developing self-education discourse based on self-care, the fact that within a post-
intellectual culture, history and tradition are not an unquestionable authority has to be taken into
account; however, the development of one’s discourse is impossible, if diachronic and
synchronic aspects of the semantics of cultural signs are not accepted. At developing their self-
education discourse, learners do not take information as the source of truth, they deconstruct it
taking from it things that they themselves need, since meaningful and broadening personality’s
experience are only those things that you empathize, analyze and make your own.
5. At creating the environment where secondary school learners develop their self-education
discourse based on self-care, a specific system of values is defined which materializes on three
levels:
a) a daily level on which values are only marked out, then they go through a processing
cycle;
b) correlation with the discourse of market supply and demand;
82
c) implementation of a value in a symbol: value’s specificity is defined which acts
simultaneously in a) art of life implemented by a personality; b) positioning in the context
of economic processes; c)mental life oriented towards knowing the self (moreover, a
value unites all three levels into one whole).
