Attention Thai SMEs -Are you prepared for the AEC

Currently there are over 3 million SMEs in Thailand.

Unfortunately many still face challenges from

domestic factors and government regulations,

especially regarding minimum wage policy.

SMEs need to adjust in order to enhance their

competitive capabilities and create a strong

business foundation ahead of the upcoming

AEC (ASEAN Economic Community) in 2015.

While the challenges of external factors have

been considerable, there are also fl uctuations in

the world economy to contend with. However,

Thailand’s upcoming entry into the AEC is

projected to be a big positive. But SMEs must

be ready to take advantage of the opportunities

which will also bring increased competition from

other ASEAN countries.

Thai SMEs are fortunate to have the advantage

of a sound industrial and manufacturing base.

The Kingdom is one of the world's major

agricultural producers and has recently grown

to be a powerful player in industries such as

automotive, auto parts, electronic components

and electric appliances. Thailand is also in a

prime geographic location, at the heart of the

AEC. This will provide excellent opportunities

to link with other AEC members along with

the rest of Asia. Another strong advantage is

the country’s skilled labor force. Compared to

other AEC members this is a big plus for SMEs.

Together these opportunities and strengths will

give Thailand a solid foundation for success in

the new economic trading bloc which will be

the third largest in the world.

The Automotive industry will be one of strongest benefi ciaries in the new AEC. Currently Thailand is on track to break into the top 10 of the world’s

biggest auto producing countries and output is expected to reach 3 million units by 2015. The AEC will off er excellent business opportunities for

Thai part-makers who will be able to expand their markets to cover other ASEAN countries. Thai part makers will have ample opportunities to form

joint ventures with local and regional partners. Tier-1 Thai part makers may adopt a business model similar to multinational fi rms which allocate and

exchange their part production among various ASEAN countries. Doing this helps them boost their economies of scale production and also helps

enhance distribution channels in those markets.

“Thailand’s investment trend is based around the

importance of the country as a manufacturing

base. Only a minority of investors relocate out

of the country and the majority continue to

use Thailand as their production base. Some

companies relocate to the North East and others

open new factory locations locally, but generally

this is to diversify risk. Application numbers for

Thai investment from January to August are

already 700 billion THB according to the BOI.

This is up signifi cantly compared to August of

last year which had only 300 billion THB. As

you are probably aware there are problems

between China, Japan and Europe and many

companies are now looking to ASEAN. Thailand

has better opportunities for foreign investors,

and the majority of Japanese investors turn to

the Kingdom.” said, Mr. Narucha Ruchuphan,

Director of the BOI Unit for Industrial Linkage

Development, Thailand Board of Investment.

Here are some of his views…

“The mission of BUILD is to provide business

opportunities for Thai entrepreneurs in supporting

industries, especially for foreign investors including

large manufacturers, and buyers of industrial

parts from home and abroad. There are two key

goals: 1st - Enhance and develop competitiveness

for entrepreneurs; 2nd - Help locate new

markets and opportunities for entrepreneurs.

The tools to enhance competitiveness however

are limited. It is usually only seminars help that

can educate and introduce new technology to

assist entrepreneurs. One of the most eff ective

activities we provide is the Vendors Meet

Customers (VMC) program. This helps fi nd new

markets and link vendors and entrepreneurs across the country. In addition we assist Thai entrepreneurs to participate in both domestic and international trade shows.”

“With the launch of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) companies can either gain or lose industry support.” the Director said. “This is a challenge in many industries but the AEC will open and increase competition so industries will face both positives and negatives. Disadvantages will be in areas of communication, and logistics particularly

textiles. The advantages are in the Auto parts, Electronics and Machinery industries. Overall, however, the market will expand to provide

more business opportunities, but entrepreneurs

need to consider what they must do to maintain

leadership and maintain their customer base.

For example, seeking foreign partners, sharing

know-how and including new technology and

automation that can help reduce costs and

increase productivity is very important.”

SUBCON Thailand is organized by the Thailand

Board of Investment, the Thai Subcontracting

Promotion Association and UBM Asia (Thailand).

It is held in Bangkok in May each year. Over

the last 6 years the event has become one of

BUILD’s most popular activities. Its successes

เพราะเมื่อเปดเออีซีจะเกิดการแขงขันกันอยางชัดเจน ซึ่งมีทั้งอุตสาหกรรมที่เสียเปรียบและได

เปรียบ ที่เสียเปรียบนาจะเปนดานการสื่อสาร

สิ่งทอและโลจิสติกส สวนที่ไดเปรียบแนนอนก็คือ

ชิ้นสวนยานยนต อิเล็กทรอนิกสและเครื่องจักร

เพราะตลาดจะเปดกวางขึ้นมีโอกาสมากขึ้น แตผู

ประกอบการตองกลับมามองวาจะทําอยางไรจึง

จะรักษาความเปนผูนําในตลาดและรักษาฐาน

ลูกคาไวได ยกตัวอยางเชน การแสวงหาพันธมิตร

Mr. Chanathip Surachaisittikul, President of the Thai Subcontracting Promotion Association

We asked questions about the Thai Supporting Industry and its readiness for the coming ASEAN Economic Community (AEC). Mr Chanathip said: “Our research has divided industry into fi ve groups; some will benefi t and others will not, but overall we found that groups using high quality products also use advanced technology and are sure to benefi t because they are able to manufacture top quality items - more so than any other country in ASEAN.”

“Many foreign investors are now interested in investing in Thailand,” the President said. “Europe for example where, there have advanced technology but falling demand. They are looking to invest in production in Thailand and sell back to their own country to reduce costs and also expand into this region. After the launch of the AEC, entrepreneurs that do not adapt will have operational diffi culties and face many challenges. It's important to diversify and create unique selling points with

other companies. Another way is to fi nd an opportunity to enter a joint venture with foreign partners. This will result in improved technology and a broader image.”

Mr. Chanathip continues to fi nd new markets for members of the association. “Large enterprises are employing many workers and producing OEM for numerous brands, but if competitors have lower labor costs then it isn’t possible to compete. In this case, marketing provides another venue e.g. exhibiting at trade shows to meet new clients, and inspect new technologies that can help to improve products and meet market demands.”

"Other than normal sales channels, our members are able to trade with each other in groups and we also have our major annual event: SUBCON Thailand which is co-organized with the BOI Unit for Industrial Linkage Development (BUILD), BOI and UBM Asia (Thailand). SUBCON Thailand is ASEAN’s leading international industrial subcontracting event for the procurement of industrial parts and has now been operating for seven consecutive years. ตอคําถามถึงความพรอมของอุตสาหกรรมสนับสนุนรับประชาคมเศรษฐกิจอาเซียน (เออีซี) คุณชนาธิป กลาววา “จากการวิจัยสามารถแบงกลุมออกมาได 5 กลุมอุตสาหกรรม ซ่ึงบางกลุมจะไดประโยชนและแนนอนบางกลุมจะเสียประโยชน คิดวากลุมผลิตสินคาคุณภาพท่ีใชเทคโนโลยีระดับสูงจะไดประโยชน โดยรวมแลวสินคาของเรามีคุณภาพมากกวาประเทศอ่ืนๆในอาเซียน และนักลงทุนตางชาติจํานวนมากก็มีความสนใจประเทศของเรา ตัวอยางเชน ที่ยุโรปเองเทคโนโลยีการผลิตกาวหนามากแตกําลังซ้ือลดลงเขากําลังมองถึงการเขามาลงทุนผลิตในประเทศไทยโดยนอกจากสงกลับไปขายในประเทศของเขาสวนหน่ึงเพ่ือลดตนทุนและยังสามารถขายในภูมิภาคน้ี

Mr. Hironobu Sengoku said: "Our company produces aluminum alloy wheels that we also

export to Japan. Our know-how in this area enables us to use Gravity Die Casting which can produce large numbers of aluminum wheels at one time helping to lower costs and we can also share molds for manufacturing other product parts. The production process for each step requires high-tech machinery, especially for casting and lathes. Our casting machine was custom made for our operation but some parts we imported from Japan. We use only OKUMA lathe machines because they provide the ideal technology that lets us produce various designs using the same machine. This saves time because we don’t need to change to another machine."

Mr. Masakazu Tobiyama mentioned the plant's production capacity. “Before the recent fl oods, we had 5 production lines. In one month, we could manufacture 150,000 aluminum alloy wheels for

domestic sales and export to Japan. However, we can now only open three production lines just for domestic sales. We are going to add one more production line by introducing new technology

from Japan which has never been used before in Thailand. This technology called, ‘Superforming

Technology’, will enable us to manufacturer new designs for lighter and stronger wheels. But we had no plan to increase our capacity before the fl oods. This was because we believed that market

demand would be reduced due to the global economic slowdown.”

Regarding the Japanese perspective on investing in Thailand after the fl ooding, Mr. Hironobu Sengoku said, “Japan has been investing and opening companies in Thailand for a long time because the country has a solid foundation. There are many laws and policies that make it easy for new investors to invest in Thailand. These include BOI policies which help to attract investors to the Kingdom rather than go to other countries.

สําหรับมุมมองการลงทุนในประเทศไทยหลังจากปญหาน้ําทวม คุณเซนโกขุ ใหความเห็นวา “ประเทศไทยมีคนญี่ปุนมาลงทุนตั้งบริษัทในเมืองไทยมานานแลวเพราะมีรากฐานที่ดี มีกฎหมายและหลายๆอยางรองรับ จึงนาจะเปนเรื่องงายสําหรับคนใหมๆที่จะเขามาลงทุน รวมถึงนโยบายการสงเสริมการลงทุนจาก บีโอไอดึงดูดใหนักลงทุนสนใจเขามาลงทุนแทนที่จะไปประเทศอื่นๆ”

Thai Car production hit 2 million in 2012 so the country will be one of the world’s top 10 car producers in a few short years. Currently, Thai manufacturers are in the process of shifting technology to more automated robotic systems. As a machine maker, we have to educate users in this new technology and convince them to invest in automated systems. Automation not only solves labour shortage problems, but also improves product quality in terms of precision. We will use INTERMACH 2013 as a channel to show this and will bring an automated system to the event to demonstrate.

Next year we will launch the ASEAN Technical Center in Bangkok and use the Center as ASEAN’s Hub support for ASEAN countries. The Technical Center will also include a showroom and to host an open house.

The Department of Industrial Promotion (DIP) by the Bureau of Supporting Industries Development (BSID), the Alliance for Supporting Industries Association (A.S.I.A) and UBM Asia (Thailand) have co-organized an event entitled “Empowering entrepreneurs to prepare for the ASEAN Economic Community”. The presentation is one of several activities created to encourage entrepreneurs in ASEAN to participate in the many business building activities at SUBCON Thailand and INTERMACH 2013.

The BOI Unit for Industrial Linkage Development (BUILD) part of the Thailand Board of Investment (BOI) along with the Thai Subcontracting Promotion Association and UBM Asia (Thailand) Co., Ltd. organized a seminar entitled, “The Concept of positive thinking to prepare for the AEC”. It was presented on 12 December, at the Kantary Hotel, Ayuthaya. Leading industry experts expressed their views and shared experiences with entrepeneurs from Ayuthaya, Pathum Thani and nearby provinces.

The seminar was very successful and met the objectives set to promote SUBCON Thailand and INTERMACH. Two further seminars will be held at Korat in January and Chonburi in March.

one industry - large or small all our customers are

equally important."

"We do not give priority to the AEC as ASEAN

countries mostly use machinery from Europe,

America, Japan, Taiwan, Korea and China, each

of which have their own distributors. There are

advantages and disadvantages to free trade.

Thailand is in a group of countries that have high

manufacturing technology such as Singapore and

Malaysia. But Thailand has an advantage in terms

of geographic location. Our central position allows

us to export easily to Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos,

Myanmar and other countries in the area.”

Mr. Sinchai opened by noting that; "Hi-Com

Corporation is an importer and distributor of

Hitachi air compressors and we have been

in business for six years. Our customers are

mainly in the automotive industry i.e. Suzuki,

Nissan, Toyota, along with manufacturers of

spare parts and components for the electrical

and electronic components industries.”

Mr. Silratth said, “Siam Seimitsu - a subsidiary

of the Siriwat Corporation (1976) Ltd. was

Mr. Sinchai said, “ORION is imported from Japan. It is a very high quality product and of course, the price is expensive, so we have to be selective regarding who we off er it to. ORION is popular with Japanese plants, but we don’t usually recommend it to Thai customers. When a customer gives us their requirements and budget we introduce products to meet their needs.”

The main problem will be labor. The Myanmar

workforce has a low labor cost but is not

skilled. The impact on the AEC will also aff ect

capital costs. Thailand's labor wages may be

increased and it is a challenge to fi nd workers

to support growing production and meet

increasing demand.”

Mr. Sinchai said, “The future trend of the

manufacturing industry is both positive and

negative. Many customers are likely to invest

more in Thailand, but problems here include

political instability and natural disasters such

as fl ooding that a lot of people are concerned

about. In general, investors are still hesitant to

invest but the Hitachi group projected that from

now until 2015, sales should increase by 30-40%. Labor cost is our main problem which impacts our customers in the manufacturing industry. If there is an increase in competition reducing costs isn’t always the answer. Depending on the circumstances it is generally better to try to solve problems which will in turn create better opportunities.”

Mr. Silratth said, “I believe that next year the economy will be more stable than over the past few years. More investment in equipment and machinery may not be as strong as this year

because of the replacement of fl ood damaged machines and investors may delay decisions due to global economic volatility.
