Like dogfighting, cockfighting is now illegal in every state, with most states specifically prohibiting anyone from being a spectator at a cockfight. As of 2013, 41 states have passed felony cockfighting laws.

BUT THEY WANT TO FIGHT…RIGHT?
Cockfighters claim that gamebirds are vicious, tenacious, and do not need to be trained to fight. They claim they are just doing what comes natural and are just setting the venue.
In reality, the gamebirds are products of centuries of breeding for specific gameness and fighting qualities. The birds are subjected to a rigorous training Keep before a scheduled fight. Birds that don’t make the cut are culled. Former gamebirds can make wonderful companions and help keep the tick and bug problem down in your yard.

BASIC TERMINOLOGY

• Runner – a bird who does not fight or attempts to flee from his opponent.
• Keep – Rigorous feeding schedule and training program to condition a bird before a fight. Approximately two weeks. Keeps vary and are closely guarded.
• Pit (Arena) – Usually 15 to 20 feet square. Unlike dogfighting, pits are not required. The only requirement is the area is cleared, level, and the boundaries and score lines are clearly defined.
• Check Weight – The exact weight a bird is to be fought. Most birds are fought 2 and 3 ounces of one another. Just like a dog match, birds are weighed just before the fight.
• Catch Weight– birds fought without weight limits. These are typically “Shaker Birds” a bird who weight 6 pounds, six ounces or more.

Each crime scene is different and may require a different approach to processing the scene. However there is a basic crime scene protocol that should be adhered to in all crime scenes. These basic functions or tasks are as follows:
1. INTERVIEW2. EXAMINE3. PHOTOGRAPH4. SKETCH5. PROCESS
Sketching the crime scene is the fourth step in the protocol. A rough sketch or diagram is completed by the investigator/crime scene technician to demonstrate the layout of the crime scene along with the location of victim(s) or evidence.
