마음의 치유법

나는 장회준 작가를 어린 시절부터 알아왔다. 그는 나와는 동향이다. 장회준은 아주 어렸을 때부터 재능을 지닌 똑똑한 어린 소녀였다. 그리고 아주 오랜 세월이 흘렀

고 장회준이 어디에서 무엇을 하는지 나는 까마득히 잊고 있었다. 그런 그를 우연찮게도 나는 얼마 전에 또 만나게 되었다. 그리하여 나는 그의 화실을 들르게 되었다.

뜻밖에도 창가의 작업대 위엔 그 옛날 내가 낸 첫 시집 ‘칠년의 기다림과 일곱 날의 생’이 놓여 있었다. 우윳빛 가을햇살이 가득히 쏟아져 들어오는 창가로, ‘그네를

타고 있는 어린 소녀’의 조각작품이 보였다. 미완성작품이었다. 새벽까지 장회준의 손끝에서 조물조물 빚어졌을 그 ‘그네 타는 소녀’는 어린 시절의 장회준이 틀림

없었다. 아아, 그렇구나. 나의 친구 외사촌 누이인 장회준은 우리가 대학을 다닐 때 저렇게 어리디 어린 단발머리 소녀였었다.

그가 끓여내 온 커피를 마시며 우린 많은 이야기를 나누었다. 이야기를 나누면서 내 시야에 들어오는 조각 작품들, 그리고 구석구석에 널려있는 캔버스 그림들을 보

았다. 대부분의 작품들이 그가 오래오래 살아왔을 도회지와는 너무나도 거리가 멀었다. 가만히 들여다보니 성장한 지금의 자신, 자신의 아이 그리고 어린 시절의 꿈같

은 모습들이 대부분이었다. 그리고 고향의 소소한 자연물들이 주된 모티브로 되어 있었다. 그랬을 것이다. 그것으로 나는 뚜렷이 어떤 이미지를 떠올릴 수 있었다. 또

한 이해할 수 있었다.

색채는 청색이 기조를 이루고 있었다. 생기 넘치는 색상 속에 흐르는 건 어딘가 모르게 고요하고 깊은 사색이 담겨 있었다. 그건 여성만이 가질 수 있는 섬세함이고 그

리움 같은 꿈이었다. 통각의 아픔을 깨고 나온 한 마리 새의 소슬함이었다. 그 소슬함 속에는 어쩌면 관조적 자연관이 존재하고 있었다. 장회준의 조각와 그림은 동양적

자연치유의 염원이 간절히 담겨 있었다. 장회준 만의 고독한 치유법이 그의 그림 안에 나팔꽃처럼 오롯이 피어 있었다. 그건 보이지 않는 울림이었다.

‘세상의 골목을 빠져나온’ 한 사람. 그가 마침내 당도한 꿈의 세계. 그건 안식이고 자유이고 보다 깊고 너른 자연에의 회귀였다. 익숙한 사물에서 우린 장회준의 아

름다움을 읽어내고야 만다. 새를 무심코 바라보는 소녀. 사이프러스 나무처럼 솟아오른 머릿결에 바람처럼 걸려있는 초승달. 망원경과 창가의 화분과 멀리 내다보이는

나무와 하늘. 빛나는 숲에 고요히 누워있는 여인. 평화로이 잠든 소녀. 나무 곁에 서서 무슨 소린가 귀 기울이는 소녀. 그리고 흰 꽃송이를 품고 솟아오르는 물방울 물

방울들. 젊은 여인 곁의 어린 소년 하나. 무엇인가를 깊이 사색하는 소녀. 그리고 청색 꽃잎의 문양 속에 푸른 이파리를 쓴 소녀의 명상. 나무 중간에 비스듬히 떠서 모

락모락 김 서린 찻잔을 들고 잠들어 있는 구름 여인. 초승달에 앉은 여인과 한 남자 그리고 흐르는 구름 두 조각. 바람 이는 나무에 서 있는 여인. 무슨 소망의 단지일까,

가슴에 꼬옥 항아리를 품고서 먼 곳을 향해 그리움을 날리는 한 여인의 초상……나는 장회준의 조각와 그림 속에 담긴 이 이야기들이 무엇을 이야기하는지를 이해하게

되었다. 그랬다. 누구든 이 그림들을 보면 아주 간결하게, 아주 고요히, 그 마음의 결이 흘려주는 꿈의 이야기를 듣게 될 것이다. 그리하여 자신도 어느 새 자연의 소리

에 귀 기울여 순결한 마음의 치유를 경험하게 될 것이다.

조각와 그림이 같은 이미지로 대비된 그의 독특한 구성을 나는 주목한다. 평면과 입체의 세계는 동시적이면서 또한 이중구조적인 현실이자 꿈일 것이다. 이것이 장회

준이 우리 모두에게 던져주는 그리움의 메시지임을 나는 깨달았다.

장회준은 이제 그가 꿈꾸는 세계를 마음 깊이 이해하고 그 세계의 사물 하나하나를 아프게 껴안고자 한다. 나는 그것이 비록 고통스러운 현실일지라도 그것들을 한없

는 사랑으로 아름답게 품어주기를 바란다. 개인전을 진심으로 축하한다.

Healing of a heart

Growing up in the same town in Inje, I have known artist Hoejoon Jang from her childhood. I recall Hoejoon was gifted and smart even as a little girl. And many years have passed. She was long forgotten and I didn’t even think to look up where and what she might be doung after all these years. It was only recently when I coincidentally ran into her and stopped by her atelier. I was surprised to see my poetry book, ‘Seven Years of Waiting and Life of Seven Days’, which was published a long time ago, sitting on her work bench alongside a bright small window. There was an unfinished sculpture work, ‘A Little Girl on a Swing,’ under the warm milky autumn sunshine through the window.I could imagine Hoejoon must have been shaping the little girl with her fingertips until the dawn, and I didn’t have any doubt that the little girl on the swing must be the little Hoe-joon. Indeed... Cousin of my friend, Hoejoon was a little girl with bang hair just like the sculpture when I was a college student.We chatted a lot over freshly brewed coffee. While we talked, I enjoyed many of her sculptures and paintings on canvas, scattered casually on every corners of the atelier. Most of her works didn’t seem to fit the landscape of the city where she must have spent most of her life. Looking deeper into her works, they were representation of a grown up Hoejoon, her kid and her dreams of young age. And her main motif was small and ordinary peices of nature that can be found in her home town. Right, just looking at them, I was able to conjure up a clear image and simply understood. Most of them were based on greenish color. Tranquility and meditation was flowing through its vibrant color. It is a delicacy or dream of longing only a woman could dream. Solitary of a bird, just got out from its own shell after relentless painful cracking, it must be. The solitary or loneliness was drawn by her meditative way of viewing the nature. Her sculptures and paintings carry the desire of oriental natural healing deep inside. Her own healing therapy, lonely but unique, was there like a blooming morning glory. It was the invisible resonance. A man out of ‘the alley of the world. Where she has reached at last is the world that can only exist in a dream. It must be solace, freedom as well as returning to wide and deep nature. You should be able to find her definition of beauty from her works made out of ordinary stuffs. ‘A girl staring at a bird’ ‘A Crescent moon hung on a hairdo raised like a Cyprus tree’ ‘A telescope and a flowerpot by the window, deep sky and a tree seen far away through the window’. ‘A woman lying down quietly in the glowing woods’ ‘A girl fallen asleep with peace of mind’. ‘A girl leaning on a tree and listening to something.’ ‘Waterdrops blooming with white flower bud’. ‘A little boy by a young lady ’ ‘A mediating girl’. ‘A sleeping lady with a steamy teacup on a cloud tree’. ‘A lady on crescent moon and a man with floating clouds’ ‘A lady on a windy tree’ ...... Could be a pot full of wishes, a lady holding the pot and sending her longing far away… I figured out what Hoejoon was trying to tell us with her sculptures and paintings. Indeed, just by looking at these paintings, you will be able to hear the story of the dream on her heart, and so that you will hear the voice of the nature, then experience the healing of your innocent heart. Paintings and sculptures coexist in the worlds of plane and solidity to represent both reality as well as a dream. I realized it is the message of longing which Hoejoon tries to deliver.Hoejoon deeply understands the world she is dreaming of and then she is now trying to painfully embrace even the smallest things in that world. I wish she will bear them with endless love even though it is painful reality. Hoejoon, I sincerely congratulate you on the exhibition from my heart.
