From Katie’s Desk…
How Do You Recycle?
We want ALL your newspapers, magazines, folders,
office & school papers, fax and copy paper, envelopes,
shopping catalogs, mail, colored paper, gift wrap, phone
books. We want it ALL!
We make a choice with each piece of paper we
handle: Save, Trash, or Recycle. Sometimes we choose
to let papers turn into clutter around the house…or we
dump them directly into the wastebasket and out to the
curb on pick-up day…or we make the effort to put them
into a recycling receptacle.
We have all heard the statistics about garbage that
ends up in a landfill, remaining in its exact form, taking
up space for years to come. Our world now generates
3x more waste than 50 years ago; 40% of what goes
into our landfills today is recyclable paper.
When we make the effort to recycle paper, it enters
into what could be a never-ending loop of recycling
→paper→recycling. The cycle begins again every time
we purchase something made with recycled paper.
Paper collected from Blessed Trinity’s recycling bins
has about a two week processing time from Paper
Retriever bin pick-up to new product.
This full circle process begins with YOU. Our
Christian practice of stewardship calls us to thoughtful
concern about our world and its natural resources. So
we’re back to the first question: How do you recycle?
Where does your practice fall in the trash vs. recycle
choice?
Some of you already bring your paper here to
recycle. We earn money when you recycle paper in the
green and yellow bins in our back parking lot. Because
of your efforts, our bins weighed in with 3.93 tons of
paper last month. We are paid $5 per ton. Blessed
Trinity Parish has received $723.15 for our recycling
efforts so far. This is money no one had to contribute,
but money available for our operating expenses and
outreach programs.
What if we dreamed bigger? Could each of us
make a commitment today to paper recycling because it
is good for the environment and because it is good for
Blessed Trinity?
Available in some neighborhoods, curbside
recycling is convenient. Some households are already
recycling at city locations. But I am asking that you
begin to think differently about paper recycling. Will
you be willing to train yourself to start a new habit of
recycling for Blessed Trinity? It makes good financial
Disciple of the Week
Eileen Hamblen joined Blessed Trinity, got in-
volved and never looked back. Eileen is active in packing
food for the bountiful basement. She is a Eucharistic min-
ister. She is an active member of the St Vincent de Paul
Society. In addition, Eileen participates in the women’s
ministry events and parish activities. It is hard to imagine
life at BT without her. Thanks Eileen for all that you do.
TICKETS for NIGHT AT THE RACES and WPCA DINNER
& AUCTION are available for purchase this weekend at ta-
ble in the back of church
sense for our parish and costs you nothing at all.
Best of all, everyone can do this! Keep a bag next
to you as you look through your mail and sort what
needs to be kept and what can be put into the recycle
bag. Instead of complaining about the amount of junk
mail that comes into our homes, we can say, “Yea!
Look at all this junk mail! More $$$ for Blessed Trin-
ity!” Bring that bag of paper to church with you each
weekend. Add in your newspapers, too. Any habit
takes time to develop. Are you willing to give paper
recycling at Blessed Trinity a try?
Each household can start small. It just takes get-
ting into the habit of recycling paper and bringing it
here. If we collect mail and newspapers from every
household, what will that mean to our tonnage? We
can dream bigger from there. Grow our tons!
If you have ideas to share on ways we can build
our parish recycling program, let us hear from you. If
you would be willing to pick up recycling from the
homebound or elderly, let me know. I will keep you
posted on how many pounds of paper we recycle each
month. Thanks for your help. Please do your part to
fill those bins!
P.S. By the end of this month, we hope to have two
new collection bins for aluminum recycling next to the
paper collection bins.

CONFIRMATION RETREAT On Sunday January 8, un-
der the guidance of our Confirmation Director, Bill Svo-
boda, our young people gathered at Camp Christopher for
a day of prayer, reflection and time spent with family.
Youth from Trinity High School and St. Joseph Academy
gave witness to their faith. The evening concluded with a
pasta dinner, followed by an enthusiastic Mass. The spirit-
uality of these young men and women was evident
throughout the day. We are glad our parish provides the
proper environment to nourish that spirituality week after
week. Thanks to you, Bill, and also to John Deighton and
Deacon Dick Beercheck.
