Austria

Grand Hall of historical castle, living room, balcony

㋣ハインリヒ伯爵夫妻の帰国と結婚を祝うパーティーに貴族や親戚らが集い賑やかにお酒を楽しんでいる。そこにハインリヒ伯爵が一人大広間へ入ってくる。友人たちが彼に声をかけてゆく。

Celebration for Count and Countess Henrichs’ return.

Aristocrats and relatives enjoy drinking together.

Count enters the great hall alone.

Friends cheer him.

ポトツキー Potzkey 「ハインリヒ伯爵、ご帰国ご結婚 Hainrihi hakushaku, gokikoku gokekkon

おめでとう！ omedetō!

旅の話を聞かせておくれよ」 tabi no hanashi o kikasete okureyo Please let me listen to the story of your journey

伯爵 Count 「やあポトツキ！そうだな、狩りの話はどうだい？ yā Pototsuki! sōdana, kari no hanashi wa dōdai? Ah, Potzkey! How is hunting going?

朝鮮では虎を、 chōsen dewa tora o, I hunt a tiger in Korea and a cheetah in South America!

南米ではチーターを射止めたぞ！」 nanbei dewa chītā o itometa zo!

ポトツキー Potzkey 「ははは！ wahaha! Hahaha

銃の腕は相変わらずだな！」 jū no ude wa aikawarazu dana! Skills of guns are still there!

ナイブベルグ Neivberg 「やっと戻ったなハインリヒ！ yatto modottana Hainrihi! Finally, you came back, Heinrich!

もうクネードルは食べたか？」 mō Kunēdoru wa tabetaka? Did you have Knödl yet?

フランツ Franz 「おかえり伯爵！ちょっと痩せたんじゃないか？ okaeri hakushaku! chotto yaseta nja naika? Welcome back, Count! You lost some weight?

久々に君の歌が聴きたいよ」 hisabisa ni kimi no uta ga kikitai yo I want to hear you sing.

伯爵 Count 「おぉフランツ大公！光栄です！ ō Furantsu taikō! kōei desu! Oh, Duke Frantz! Nice to see you again!

㋣各々に貴族達は伯爵に結婚祝いの言葉をかけていく。そこに光子が大広間に入ってくる。光子に微笑みかける人もいれば冷たい視線を送る者もいる。

Aristocrats are giving congraturatory salutes to the Count

when Mitsuko enters the grand hall.

Some smiles at Mitsuko and others looks at Mitsuko with

icy stare.

Born in Austria

I travelled all over the world

My heart remains in homeland

where the emperor and the land is good



伯爵 Count 「さあ光子、こっちへいらっしゃい。 sā Mitsuko, kocchi e irasshai. Mitsuko, come here.

愛する私の家族を紹介しよう」 aisuru watashi no kazoku o shōkai shiyō I will introduce you to my dear family.

ハンス Hans 「はじめまして、弟のハンスです。 hajimemashite, otōto no Hansu desu. I am the younger brother, Hans.

そして妻のマリエッタです。」 soshite tsuma no Marietta desu. This is my wife, Marietta.

マリエッタ Marietta「どうもはじめまして。東洋人とお会いするのは初めてですわ。

dōmo hajimemashite. tōyō-jin to oai surunowa

hajimete desuwa.

Nice to meet you. This is my first time to meet an oriental

person.

東洋の方もドレスを着るのですね。 tōyō no kata mo doresu o kiruno desune. I did not know a oriental person would wear a dress.

てっきり着物という布を巻いているのかと。」 tekkiri Kimono to iu nuno o maite irunokato. I thought they wear a cloth called kimono.

光子 Mitsuko 「はじめまして herr ハンス、frau マリエッタ。 hajimemashite herr Hansu, frau Marietta. Nice to meet with you, Herr Hans, Frau Marietta.

日本から来た光子と申します。 Nihon kara kita Mitsuko to mōshimasu. I am Mitsuko from Japan.

私はもうオーストリア人ですので watashi wa mō Ōsutoria-jin desunode As I am an Austrian, I'm wearing a dress today.

今日はドレスを着ました。」 kyō wa doresu o kimashita.

伯爵 Count 「マリエッタにも着物を見せたかったよ。 Marietta nimo Kimono o misetakatta yo. I wish you see the kimono, Marietta.

なんとも美しい服なんだ。」 nantomo utsukushii fuku nanda. It is beautiful.

マリエッタ Marietta 「お義兄様は服に無頓着だから。 onīsama wa fuku ni mutonchaku dakara.

光子さんが着てらっしゃるドレスも時代遅れのものだわ。」Mitsuko-san ga kite rassharu doresu mo jidai okure no

mono dawa.

伯爵 Count 「ははは！マリエッタは相変らず流行にうるさいな！ hahaha! Marietta wa aikawarazu hayari ni urusaina! Hahaha, You still care about fanshion.

服のことも光子に教えてやってくれ。」 fuku no koto mo Mitsuko ni oshieteyatte kure. Please give Mitsuko some advice.

㋣光子は伯爵に連れられて家族や親戚との挨拶を続ける。

Mitsuko continues to greet family and relatives.

伯爵 Count 「さあ光子よおいで。挨拶に疲れただろう。 sā Mitsuko yo oide. aisatsu ni tsukareta darō. Come here, Mitsuko. You must be tired.

少し踊って楽しく過ごそう。」 sukoshi odotte tanoshiku sugosō. Let’s dance and enjoy each other.

光子 Mitsuko 「でもこんな大広間で踊るだなんて… demo konna ōhiroma de odoru danante... But, dancing in the great hall….I'm embarrased.

You are out of fashion and the dress Mitsuko is wearing is

out of date.



伯爵 Count 「ははは！気にすることはない。 hahaha! kinisuru koto wa nai. Hahaha! No to worry.

はやくおいで！堂々とすればいいのさ。 hayaku oide! dōdō to sureba iinosa. Please come quickly. Act with confidence.

君は美しいよ！」 kimi wa utsukushii yo! You are beautiful!

伯爵 Count 「Alles walzer ! （さぁワルツを踊ろう）」 Alles walzer! Let's dance waltz!

㋣光子は伯爵に引かれシャンデリアの煌めきの下で踊り始める。

As the Count draws Mitsuko in, Mitsuko and the Count

dance under chandelier light.

㋣周囲の貴族の反応は様々。にこやかな者もいれば、好奇の視線や冷たい視線を送る者、嘲笑う者もいる。

Reactions of aristocrats are all different.

There are some that are smiling and others are mesmerized

and staring with cold stare.

[第二場]　悪の誘惑 Scene 2 Invitation of Evil

㋣ハンスとマリエッタは大広間からバルコニーに移動し二人だけになる。

Hans and Marietta leave the grand hall and move to the

balcony on their own.

ハンス Hans 「兄貴に一目置く諸侯たち aniki ni ichimoku oku shokō tachi Feudal lords, they obey my brother

どいつもこいつも分かっていない doitsu mo koitsu mo wakatte inai Nobody gets it

兄貴は移民を連れてきたんだ！ aniki wa imin o tsurete kitanda! My brother brought back an immigrant!

Coudenhove to the oriental woman, are you?

明け渡そうなんて思ってないわよね？」 ake watasō nante omotte naiwayone?

ハンス Hans 「どういう事だ？」 dōiu koto da? What do you mean?

日本ですら平民だった女よ。 Nihon desura heimin datta onna yo. She is from the working class in Japan.

クーデンホーフ家を乗っ取らせないためにも、 Kūdenhōfu ke o nottorasenai tame nimo,

あなたはカール大公の様に勇敢に戦うべきよ。 anata wa kāru taikō no yō ni yūkan ni tatakau beki yo.

お兄様を撃って一族の名誉を奪い返すのよ。」 onīsama o utte ichizoku no meiyo o ubai kaesu noyo. Shoot your brother and restore integrity of the family.

㋣マリエッタは静かに拳銃をハンスに渡し去っていく。ハンスの目には義務とも野望とも分からぬ光が灯る。

Marietta gives a gun to Hans without a word.

Hans’ eyes are lit up with flames that can be interpreted as

his obligations and desire.

ハンス Hans 「この俺が兄さんを…」 kono ore ga nīsan o… Me…. Hurt my brother….

ー暗転ー Black out

[第三場]　兄弟の確執 Scene 3 Duel of brothers

㋣一人作業をしているハインリヒ伯爵。光子がお茶を持ってくる。

Count is working alone in his study when Mitsuko comes in

with a cup of tea.

光子 Mitsuko 「少しお休みになられたら」 sukoshi oyasumi ni nararetara You should take a break.

㋣光子が伯爵にお茶を渡す。 Mitsuko hands him the cup.

伯爵 Count 「ありがとう光子」 arigatō Mitsuko Thank you, Mitsuko.

光子 Mitsuko 「いつも遅くまで何を勉強なさっているの？」 itsumo osoku made nani o benkyō nasatte iruno? What are you studying so late?

伯爵 Count 「今は本の原稿を書いていたよ。 ima wa hon no genkō o kaite itayo. I was writing.

ブッダ、マホメット、そして日本の神道、 Budda, Mahometto, soshite Nihon no shintō, Buddha, Muhamad, and Japanese Shintoism

旅した国の素晴らしい文化を本にしたいんだ。」 tabi shita kuni no subarashii bunka o hon ni shitainda.

I would like to write about the culture of the wonderful

countries I visited.

㋣そこへハンスが入ってくる。 Hans enters

伯爵 Count 「ハンス。どうした？顔色が悪いな。」 Hansu. dōshita? kaoiro ga warui na. What is going on? You look pale.

An negligent woman becoming a wife of the head of our

family is insane. A woman with no knowledge of our

country

You shoud fight bravely just like lord Karl did and stop her

take over the Coudenhove family.



ハンス Hans 「兄さんどうか nīsan dōka Brother, I need you to think it over.

考えてほしい事があるんだ。」

伯爵 Count 「改まってなんだい」 aratamatte nandai What is it, you act so formal?

ハンス Hans「クーデンホフ家の継承を辞退してもらえませんか、兄さん。」

Could you please give up on succession of the Coundehove

family?

伯爵 Count 「突然どういう事だ？」 totsuzen dōiu koto da? What do you mean by that?

ハンス Hans 「でも東洋人はふさわしくない。」 demo tōyō-jin wa fusawashiku nai. But the oriental person is not suitable

伯爵 Count 「何を言い出すんだハンス！」 nani o iidasunda Hansu! What are you saying!

ハンス Hans 「僕の言葉は届かないようだね。」 boku no kotoba wa todokanai yō dane. You don't understand me, do you?

㋣ハンスは拳銃を二丁取り出す。一丁は伯爵に渡し、もう一丁は自分で伯爵に向ける

Hans takes out two guns.He gives one to the Count and

points the other at him.

ハンス Hans 「兄さん、決闘を申し込むよ」 nīsan, kettō o mōshikomu yo I am offering attaire d'honnoeur

伯爵 Count 「気は確かか！」 ki wa tashika ka! Are you mad?

光子 Mitsuko 「なんて事！」 nante koto! What!

ハンス Hans 「僕は兄さんに躊躇なく引き金が引けるよ。 boku wa nīsan ni chūcho naku hikigane ga hikeruyo. I have no problem pulling a trigger at you.

クーデンホフ家の未来の為ならね」 Kūdenhofu ke no mirai no tame narane For Coundehove’s future.

光子 Mitsuko 「やめてくださいハンス！ yamete kudasai Hansu! Please stop, Hans!

移民の血が問題なのであれば imin no chi ga mondai nanode arebaIf immigrants blood is the problem here, you should shoot

me instead.

私を撃ってくださればいい！」 watashi o utte kudasareba ii !

㋣両手を広げて伯爵の前に立つ光子。 Mitsuko spreads her arms and shield Count.

ハンス Hans 「ははは、見てよ兄さん！ hahaha, miteyo nīsan! Hahaha Look, brother.

クーデンホフ家の男が移民の女と決闘するのか！？Kūdenhofu ke no otoko ga imin no onna to kettō suru

noka!?

The Coundenhove man exercises an affaire d'honneur

against an immigrant woman?

こういうバカげた話になるから移民は嫌なんだ」 kōiu bakageta hanashi ni narukara imin wa iya nanda That’s ridiculous and that is why I hate immigrants!

㋣光子に銃を向けるハンス Hans is pointing the gun at Mitsuko.

ハンス Hans 「僕の信念を証明するよ、兄さん」 boku no shinnen o shōmei suruyo, nīsan Brother, I will commit to my cause.

伯爵 Count 「ハンス！やめろ！！」 Hansu! yamero!! Hans! Stop!

㋣伯爵は慌てて銃を抜きハンスの銃を撃ち落とす。屋敷に響きわたる銃声を聞いて慌てて女中や執事達が入ってくる。

Count shoots his gun and drops Hans’s gun out of the hand.

The gun shot echoes in the estate.

The maid and the butler come inside the room hastily.

メイド Maid 「何事ですか！ nanigoto desuka! What is going on?

ご主人様、大丈夫ですか！」 goshujin-sama, daijōbu desuka! Sir, are you alright!

伯爵 Count 「大丈夫だ。ハンスが興奮してしまってね。 daijōbu da. Hansu ga kōfun shite shimattene. I am alright. Hans got too excited.

ハンス！自分が何をしたか分かっているのか！！ Hansu! jibun ga nani o shitaka wakatte irunoka!! Hans! Do you understand what you have done!?

正気に戻るまではこの屋敷に足を踏み入れてはならない」shōki ni modoru madewa kono yashiki ni ashi o fumi

iretewa naranaiUntil you regain your sanity, he should not step on our land

㋣ハンスは気遣うメイド達の手を振り払い、自ら屋敷を去っていく。去り際に言い捨てるように。

Hans shakes off maid’s hands and leaves the house.

㋣長男リヒャルトと長女オルガとメイドが心配そうに語っている

Richard, the oldest son, Olga, the oldest daughter and Maid

are worried and talking to each other.

リヒャルト Richard 「父さんが心配だ。食事もほとんどしていない。」 tōsan ga shinpai da. shokuji mo hotondo shite inai.I am worried about my father. He has not touched food for

days.

メイド Maid「今朝もスープを一口召し上がっただけです。お体が心配です。」

kesa mo sūpu o hitokuchi meshiagatta dake desu.

okarada ga shinpai desu.

He had only a spoonful of soup this morning. I am worried

about his health.

He rings a bell to call the maid.

He coughs and gives a letter to her. After the maid departs,

he is tired out and sits down.

光子 Mitsuko 「あなたお茶を入れましたよ。」 anata ocha o iremashitayo. Here is a cup of tea for you

㋣伯爵の様子が変なのに気づく She notices Count is not well.

光子 Mitsuko 「あなた！あなた！」 anata! anata! Darling, darling

㋣メイドが入ってきて慌てて部屋を出ていく。 Maid comes in the room and leaves the room in haste.

メイド Maid 「(舞台裏で）旦那様が、旦那様が！早く医者を！」 dannasama ga, dannasama ga! hayaku isha o! (behind scenes) Please call the doctor at once for my

master!

㋣子供たちも入ってくる。伯爵に近寄り Children enter the room and come close to Count.

リヒャルト＆オルガ Richard and Olga 「パパ！パパ！」 papa! papa! Papa! Papa!

と泣き崩れる。 they cry.
