About Japanese Language Courses

The Japanese Language Programme offers courses to help students who need assistance in improving with their communication skills in Japanese. The aim of our programme is to ensure their smooth transition to life abroad, and ultimately, to support their progress toward achieving success in academic, personal, and social areas. In our programme, we offer two types of courses. 1) Special Preparatory Intensive Japanese Course (KENSHU) 【Daytime】

The KENSHU course in Japanese Language and Culture is offered to students who were placed in it by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), and to research or graduate students at TMDU who wish to study Japanese intensively. This course is for those who have no or little background of Japanese.

2) General Japanese courses 【Evening】

In these Japanese courses, students learn the Japanese language that they need for day-to-day usage and for their academic career.

If you are interested in taking one of these courses, read the following description carefully. Should you have any questions, please contact the programme coordinator at kokusai.adm (at) tmd.ac.jp or drop by International Exchange Section on the fourth floor of the Building #1, West.

学生の声 Voices of students (2016-2017)

It has always been my impression that the Japanese people highly valued patriotism. This idea urged me to learn about their history, culture, and more importantly language. I had several feedbacks that living in Japan will be quite a challenge because in order to do so, one must first learn Nihongo which is very different from Filipino and English.

When I arrived in Japan, I realized that in order to adapt to Japanese living conditions, it was a necessity to learn Nihongo. TMDU Institute of Global Affairs' Kenshu course offered an intensive language program designed to introduce Japan's culture through their native language. It covered the very essence of how to live and think like the Japanese do and assisted us in transitioning smoothly through our life in Japan. Aside from vocabulary, grammar, and conversations that are expected to be learned in a language course, the professors likewise introduced history, culture, customs, and even style by having off-campus studies such as visiting museums, life safety centers, and cities that emulated traditional Japanese living. We only had a small group which is an important factor to create interest and

interaction between students. Truth be told, it's not only Japan's culture that we get to learn but other countries as well! The professors made it a point to create an avenue for fun interaction that stimulated my desire to continuously learn. Aside from this, the schedule and activities were carefully planned and of course were followed diligently. Exercising punctuality in schedules was important for the successful completion of the course.

Learning Nihongo in Kenshu course was not an easy road but one that was definitely worth it. I am now able to read and understand Nihongo which is helpful in daily living. At some instances also engage in simple conversations! The professors, and classmates included, had a contribution to each and everyone's learning. The intensive Japanese language course gave me the inspiration to strive hard to advance my learning of Nihongo. To conclude, I had one of the best learning experiences in Kenshu course.

Kathtyn Lizbeth Lucena Siongco (キャサリン リザベス ルセナ ションコ / The Philippines / Global Health Entrepreneurship) To me, the importance of living and learning in another country gives me more concrete experience, discovering a new country and Japanese culture makes me expand my horizons as well as improve my personal development. I had never studied Japanese language in my life before, so I totally thought that learning Japanese language would be a real headache and unnecessary effort. Then, after spending my first months in Japan I realized that learning Japanese can help tremendously to communicate, assuming that Japanese language is really useful not only to speak with others but to establish deep connections and cross- cultural friendship, so I decided to challenge myself and enroll in to the course.

Starting from Basic Japanese, with the guidance of young and experienced teachers, learning Japanese not only became fun but also interesting to be in contact with students from different countries, furthermore, in the course I learned about Japanese culture, traditions and customs, as well as interesting places and traditional food.

I truly believe that learning Japanese language makes me more independent, from ordering my own food at the restaurant until communicate with my professors in my department. I am happy when I speak, read, write and even make jokes in Japanese with my fellows. Now I am ready to take Intermediate Japanese course!

Learning a foreign language is not an easy thing and seems impossible. There three different writing systems and different usage of words and grammar depending on the situation and subject you speak to. The day I landed on Japan I witnessed various kinds of scriptures all along the way, it installed my fears to learn the language even though I was enthusiastic. But it’s worth learning, extremely beneficial and practically useful to interact and mend with the culture.

I’m a doctoral student and I enrolled for lectures in language course at Tokyo Medical and Dental University. In Japanese, teacher is called as “Sensei” and my sensei is always follows up assessing my improvement in daily basis, correcting grammar parts with patience for my repeated mistakes so I always thanks them for pushing me through hard times.

Gripping the meanings of vocabularies correctly is very vital in learning Japanese. As an Indian person, I had much trouble with learning Japanese KANJI. But as we know, practice makes it perfect so for the future learners it’s better to focus on practicing the vocabularies and writing kanji letters in a right way. Grasping the exact meaning of words is necessary.

Studying something about Japanese culture and making Japanese friends helped me mastering Japanese language better. In many cases, Japanese use KEIGO, honorifics, to express their respect for other people. For instance, when a person mentioned himself, he says “boku” to his friends, “watashi” to his boss or senior people, and “watakushi” in formal cases to express his respect for the audiences. Japanese say “itadakimasu” before eating their meals to express thanks to all people who have done something for getting the meals ready for eating.

The difficulties commonly encountered by language learners are pronunciation. I couldn’t even correctly pronounce some words with “tsu” “ryu” during my period of learning, which made native speakers misunderstand me. In Japanese, “R” is pronounced like “L” in English. That confused me for for a while.

Pronouncing correctly, gripping the meanings of vocabularies, and learning a different culture are the essentials for mastering a foreign language. There is nothing to lose in learning Japanese, and everything to gain.

Araveti Sandeep Kumar (アラヴェティ サンデエプ クマル / India / Cariology and Operative Dentistry) Learning foreign language is one of my hobbies, it opens a door to get to know new cultures, lifestyles and people. After English, I choose Japanese as my next language, which is familiar to me in my childhood through manga, anime. Having 4 years to stay in Japan, I promise myself to use this time to learn Japanese seriously. The Japanese courses provided by TMDU satisfy my expectation as well as give me relaxation time.

Speaking Japanese fluently is a must for me to enjoy life fully in Japan. Remembering when I first arrived, I had lots of difficulties for just going around or buying necessary things because I could barely say my thought. Now my life is easier as I can express my thought in simple way. As time passes, I believe I can communicate well with others and start a journey to make new friends. The language courses inside university are convenient for me as I can take the classes while save time to do research.

On the other hand, Japanese class is a relaxation activity rather than self-compulsion. Indeed, after long time reading articles, taking the class allow me to reduce stress by talking with others and using another part of the brain. “Learning the language is learning the culture”, in fact, I not only learn Japanese culture but also from Thailand, China, UK from my classmate, at the same time, sharing my own country’s culture, Vietnam.

Japanese is a beautiful language but it is also effortful to conquer. However, I always think of it as my hobby, my leisure activity or even a short escape of busy life in the department. I am waiting for a day that I can use Japanese fluently so that I can explore this beautiful country.
