General Japanese Course at Hokkaido University

1. What is “Hokkaido University Japanese Standards”?

2. Semesters

We offer Japanese language courses which encourage international and Japanese students to study

together and to connect with society. General Japanese Course at eight levels include Introductory

1 to 4, Intermediate 1 to 3, and Advanced. The curricula of Intermediate and Advanced courses are

based on “Hokkaido University Japanese Standards.”

In the latest language pedagogy, the pragmatic use of language is regarded as important in addition

to the knowledge of grammar and vocabulary. We have divided the Japanese language ability

necessary for academic or social life into three aspects: Interaction, Comprehension, and Expression.

For the details of each class, refer to the Web site of Institute for the Advancement of Higher

Levels and Classes in General Japanese Course

Introductory Grammar1-4

Introductory Oral Communication 1-4

Introductory Kanji and Vocabulary 1-2

In the introductory course, students wi l l study basic grammar and vocabulary to develop a good command of Japanese.

Introductory GrammarThis class will cover basic grammar using the fundamental textbooks Minna no Nihongo 1 & 2.

Introductory Oral CommunicationThis class is for those students who are taking, or who have already taken, the course “Introductory Grammar.” Students will practice oral communication, applying what they have learned in “Introductory Grammar.”

Introductory Kanji and VocabularyThis class will study kanji and words necessary for daily life. Two types of classes are offered: one is for students who come from Chinese character cultural areas, and the other is for students who come from other areas.

I n t h e i n t e r m e d i a t e c o u r s e , s t u d e n t s w i l l improve three aspects of the Japanese language:

communication in the Interaction classes, listening and reading in the Comprehension classes, and speaking and writing in the Expression classes. Please select the class, considering what kind of ability you want to improve.

BasicThe students will acquire fundamental skills.

PracticalThis class is for those who are taking, or who have already taken, the “Basic” course. The students will acquire practical skills by participating in class activities in Japanese.

Intermediate

Advanced Interaction:role-playing, debate, etc.

Advanced Expression:

project work, presentation, etc.

Advanced Comprehension:

information retrieval and

analysis, listening to lectures, etc.

Business Japanese

The advanced course also consists of classes focusing on the three aspects of Interaction, Comprehension,

and Expression. The advanced course is divided into classes according to the topics that students will study.Business Japanese class is for those who are planning to work in Japan. The students will study business communication as well as Japanese society and Japanese corporate culture. Select the appropriate classes, considering what kind of topics you want to study.

Level Interaction Comprehension Expression

Advanced

Students will be able:to write and speak appropriately considering their purposes or specific scenes,to logically deliver their idea to those who have different opinions, andto listen to and to summarize other people's opinions
