Brand Director for CIMA International Ray Perry, who was in Namibia for the

launch, says CIMA understands diversity. “With nearly 160 000 members in 158 countries across Europe, Africa, Asia, the Pacific Rim and the Americas – CIMA is committed to helping our members operate in the global economy, across dif-ferent cultures and multi-nationals.”

Namibia was chosen for its positive out-look on future growth with projects like Vision 2030 and their commitment to education through the Education and Training Sector Improvement Programme. Perry says CIMA will be working closely with government in transforming Namibia into a knowledge-based economy.

Perry notes that professional skills and qualifications will be vital tools in Namibia’s fight against unemployment and cor-ruption. “CIMA’s earn while you learn facilities enable organisations to enhance their skills levels without losing key staff members to outside education facilities. Staff members are given the opportu-nity to upgrade their qualifications while maintaining the ethics and culture of their own companies and still contributing to strengthening the economy.”

Deputy Minister of Finance Mr Tjekero Tweya delivered the keynote address at the launch and welcomed CIMA’s entry into Namibia. Other distinguished guests included the members of CIMA in Namibia as well as the Auditor general, the British High Commissioner, the CEO of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Namibia and senior executives of Namibian companies.

Namibian companies, Perry says, should be urged to develop the skill levels of their employees through CIMA. “We offer the perfect route for organisations to develop their own highly skilled profes-

sional accountants, as matriculants and graduates can also be recruited and put onto projects that offer a career path to the top.”

The first exams will be taking place in November of this year in Windhoek, with the Namibian Accounting College and the Centre for Training and Project Development being the first educational institutions to offer the CIMA qualification.

The launch received extensive press cov-erage in Namibia as well as an 8 minute interview on the newly launched CNBC Africa channel.

KZN open day

CIMA students in KZN recently attended a breakfast with presentations from CIMA, recruitment agents and KZN employers. The morning proved to be fun and a worthwhile experience.

A Learnership is a work-based approach to learning and gaining qualifications

and includes both structured work experi-ence (practical) and structured institutional learning (theory).

Criteria, as set out in the Skills Development Act, indicate that a learnership must:• Include a structured learning component • Include practical work experience Lead to a qualification Relate to an occupation

The Tirisano learnership is registered with Bankseta. The Chartered Institute of Management Accounting (CIMA) provides the structured institutional learning to the learners called the Certificate in Business Accounting.

Thus far the project has proven to be a great success resulting in the following:

In 2005 we had 3 learners on the project and Stephen Malatjie was employed permanently within Finance. In 2006, 6 learners were on the project and both Olayne Manning and Lindiwe Selepe were employed within two

and a half months of being on the project within Exchange Control. Mubanga Changa has decided to continue his studies within the accounting field and has been employed within Equities Operations for vacational work due to his excellent performance whilst on the project.
