Stephan Balleux is the current artist in resi-dence at Wardlow studios in Fitzroy. He is Bel-gian artist, based in Berlin. His finely executed

paintings, very flat and smooth in themselves,

feature detai-led represen-

tations of smears, globs and whorls of thic-

kly applied paint. His work has been com-pared to Glenn

Brown and Ger-hard Richter. However Balleux goes further than the pop and historical references of Brown. As he explains in this interview, while he continues and extends Richter’s ex-plorations of the processes of painting, his work demonstrates more faith in the reality and power of images and the possibi-lity for a painting to be “alive”.

Walking around and through the ICA in Boston over the wee-kend, I could help but be drawn to the overhang of the building. While from the outside it’s one of the defining marks of the building it was what I experienced inside that left me wanting to talk further about it. Inside the overhang there’s two spaces that I saw. The first was a large room to sit. Giant windows give a good view of the water. The second space was quite special. There’s a bunch of iMacs descending towards the water like a lecture hall. But instead of a white board, the front of the room is defined by water. If I were to ever have the chance to make a working space near water, this is exactly what I’d want. It was such a unique and calming experience. Sitting down the silence sounded like music. If only all spaces could aspire to such a level of sound design.

Ecolean PackagingEcolean PackagingEcolean is a new packaging alternative dubbed as “A Lighter Approach to Packaging”.

“Lightweight packaging is our answer to the demands of the liquid food industry and con-sumers asking for modern and clever packa-ges. By using a mini- mal amount of

raw material we create a lightweight package w h i c h c o m -b ine s l o w e n v i -r o n -m e n -t a l impact

w i t h c o n -s u m e r c o n v e -n i e n c e . S a v i n g resources is saving the envi-ronment . That is why lightweight packaging has be-c o m e

a heavyweight argument.

The unique, pitcher-looking design has a gene-rous face for consumer communication. It has a perfect surface for really high-quality print. Colours and sharpness will do justice to any communicative intention and will certainly draw the attention of a fast moving consumer.

Saving resources is no longer just a matter of loo-king at the waste end of a package life cycle. Equa-lly important are the resources used at its beginning.

Ecolean uses less raw material from the start. Our pac-kaging material is made from a thin plastic film, part plastic (PE and PP) and part chalk (40% by weight), one of nature’s own material. That adds up to a truly lightweight package that takes less energy to produce.

Low waste volumes also save considerable resour-ces in the waste handling process. Light and thin as the packaging is, you will find resource-saving argu-ments for it throughout the whole product life cycle.”

Ecolean products are currently sold in over 30 coun-tries around the world, not yet here in the Uni-ted States, but lets hope it makes its way here soon.the packaging is, you will find resource-saving argu-ments for it throughout the whole product life cycle.”

A cool concept created by Antrepo Design, a D size battery S&P1 shaker. These are the last members of “ the I’m not product series” ( other part of series: TunerTime, Minutuner, TimeTuner. )

Material used is stainless steel and glass, the power indicators on the sides corre-late to the amount of spices left in the shakers, before refill time. The color op-tions are Red&Turquoise or Black&white.
