Kunstfilme, die man nur selten im Lichts pielhaus sieht, verwandeln einen Sommer lang die große Open Air- Leinwand in ein Kunstkino. Sechs Programme befördern die Zuschauer*innen zwischen Himmel und Hölle, lassen die Welt auf dem Kopf stehen, zeigen uns Hollywoodstars, wie wir sie sonst nicht kennen oder lösen jedes Narrativ auf — Filme, in denen die Zeit still zu stehen scheint, die bildgewaltig sind, die Wiederholung feiern oder aus gefundenem Material Neues schaffen.

A whole summer long, art films that are rarely shown at the cinema will transform the large open-air screen into a veritable Art Cinema. Six programs transport viewers to places somewhere between heaven and hell, turn the world upside down or make it stop turning altogether, celebrate repetition, create something new from found material, or dissolve every narrative.

5� JAMES BENNING

Farocki (2014), 77 min

Ein Stück Himmel als Hommage an den 2014 verstorbenen deutschen Filmemacher Harun Farocki: eine gewaltige, sich so langsam wie bestimmt daher-rollende, strahlende Wolke. Die in einer einzigen Kamera einstellung gedrehte Szene ist so verlangs-amt, dass schon die kleinste Veränderung der Natur erschei-nung zum Ereignis wird. Der Avantgarde- Filmemacher Benning erinnert — ganz im Sinne Harun Farockis — an die Utopie des Kinos: Die Welt genauer be trachten, um sie sinnstiftend zu verändern.

This piece of heaven pays tribute to German filmmaker and close friend of Benning’s, Harun Farocki, who died in 2014. A massive cloud rolls by slowly, radiant and ever-changing. In one uninterrupted shot, the naturally gradual pace of the clouds’ movement render even the slightest change to this slice of life remarkable. In the spirit of Harun Farocki, avant-garde filmmaker Benning reminds us of the utopia of cinema and the notion that observing the world closely is able to initiate meaningful change. Fear Chamber nimmt die Zuschauer*innen mit auf eine unheimliche Slasher-Reise ins kollektive Unterbewusst sein mithilfe der Filmgeschichte: Eine verrückte Achterbahnfahrt durch die Unterwelt, collagiert aus über 200 (Horror-)Filmen.

Fear Chamber takes the audience on an uncanny slasher journey to the collective subconscious through film history. A crazy rollercoaster ride down into the underworld in a collage of footage from over 200 (horror) movies.

Kopfüber, vorwärts, rückwärts. Irritation, Bewegung, Illusion und Orientierungsverlust. In ihren beiden Filmen kippt die Künstlerin die Kamera um 180 Grad und schickt sie auf die Reise durch Landschaften, in der Himmel und Erde vertauscht erscheinen.

Head over heels, forwards, backwards. Irritation, movement, illusion, and loss of orientation. In her two films, the artist tilts the camera 180 degrees and sends it on a journey through landscapes in which heaven and earth appear reversed.

Die Künstlerin und Musikerin knüpft an die zahlreichen Alice im Wunder land Motive aus Illus-trationen, Fotografien, Comics, Animations- und Spielfilmen an und verarbeitet sie zu einem ein drücklichen visuellen Sog. Kombiniert mit assoziativen Text-splittern lässt sie einen Remix von Zitaten aus Lewis Carrolls Roman und Texten des französischen Philosophen Foucault entstehen.

The artist and musician combines the numerous Alice in Wonderland motifs taken from illustrations, photographs, comics, animation and movies and assembles them into magnetic visuals. Combined with associative text fragments, the artist creates a remix of quotations from Lewis Carroll’s novel and texts by the French philosopher Foucault.

Eine vertikale Kamerafahrt führt vermeintlich durch ein 10-stöckiges Bürogebäude und präsentiert die nahezu identischen Arbeits räume. Jedes Setting deutet eine eigene Geschichte an, in der die beiden Künstler oft auch als Statisten auftauchen um typische Büroalltags szenen durchzuspielen.

A vertical dolly shot seems to transport viewers through a 10-story office building, passing a series of seemingly identical rooms. In each setting, a different story is implied as the two artists appear as extras who stage typical scenes from office life.

Aus den bekannten Hollywood-Filmen Dirty Harry, Die Hexen von Eastwick und Basic Instinct hat Candice Breitz drei Kurzfilme destilliert, die ausschließlich aus jenen Szenen bestehen, in denen die Hauptdarsteller*innen (Clint Eastwood, Jack Nicholson und Sharon Stone) zu Wort kommen. Die von der restlichen Handlung isolierten, chronologisch aneinandergereihten Stimmen-Samples erzählen eine neue, eigene Geschichte — eine über das Kino und seine Stars.

Out of the well-known Hollywood films Dirty Harry, The Witches of Eastwick, and Basic Instinct, Candice Breitz has distilled three short films which consist solely of those scenes in which the leading actors (Clint Eastwood, Jack Nicholson, and Sharon Stone) have their say. Isolated from the rest of the plot, the chronologically strung-together voice samples tell a new story of their own — one about cinema and its stars.

Siegfried A. Fruhauf versteht seine Arbeit als ein Erforschen und Untersuchen des Mediums Film mit filmischen Mitteln. Ob aus Found Footage-Fragmenten, „Filmabfällen“, vorgefertigtem oder auch digitalem Bildmaterial — das filmische Endprodukt verweist stets auf den Kontext von verwendeter Technik und Material. Unter dem Titel Und sie bewegt sich doch! hat der Experimentalfilmer und Künstler ein kosmisch rauschendes Programm seiner Arbeiten für das Kunstkino zusammengestellt.

Siegfried A. Fruhauf sees his work as an exploration and study of the medium of film using cinematic tools. Whether made from fragments of found footage, “film waste,” prefabricated or digital image material – the final film product always refers to the context of the technology and material used. In Und sie bewegt sich doch! (And yet it moves!), the experimental filmmaker and artist has put together an abstractly fantastical program of his works for the Art Cinema.
