At LAC we generally make it possible for all students to attempt NCEA. By contrast most other schools ‘siphon off’ students into non-NCEA classes to make their results look better. Highlights of LAC’s 2012 NCEA results included: An overall NCEA pass rate of 87% for Y11-13 students Y11 L1 NCEA pass rate- 74% Y12 L2 NCEA pass rate- 94% Y13 L3 NCEA pass rate- 93% Y13 University Entrance pass rate- 78% 42% of the Y12 class achieved NCEA L2 with an endorsement of either Excellence or Merit We encourage our current Y11-13 students to make good academic decisions so that they can improve on these results in 2013. PLUS – CONGRATULATIONS TO THE FOLLOWING

Nathan Best

Nathan was a graduate of LAC in 2009. He has since gone on to complete a Bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts, and his final presentation for his degree has been loaned to the college; it is displayed on the wall of our main corridor. Nathan took on the theme of design in Creation with his final assignment, and even his non-Christian tutors were forced to award him excellence for his work. Nathan believes there is strong evidence in the world around us to build our faith in a Creator God. Nathan, and his girlfriend Breanna, have set up their own design and photography business called AVODAH. Well done, Nathan!

Jay Llauder

Jay (Year 9) represented the Manawatu in the New Zealand Swimming Nationals. He is the fastest in the Manawatu in the Y12-13 group in all swimming categories. Currently, Jay is the New Zealand title holder for his age group in the 50m, 100m, 200m breast stroke and 50m butterfly. In the NZ Nationals he broke several personal records.

Talia Baken

Talia (Year 10) entered the North Island Taekwondo Championships this year. She received first place in the Poomsae, which combines technique, flexibility and power to carry out a series of techniques demonstrating her skill in these areas.

CHRISTIAN RELIGIOUS EDUCATION IN LOCAL SCHOOLS This year we have a number of Year 13 students again teaching CRE [Christian Religious Education] at two of the local schools, Kairanga and Riverdale. Each Friday morning during Terms 2 and 3, the students, working in pairs or threes and under the supervision of the classroom teacher, will teach primary-aged students for 30 minutes. The schools are delighted with the calibre of our students and the passion that they bring into the classrooms. When asked why they wanted to make such a commitment, some of the students’ responses were as follows: “I’m doing this because this is my chance to play an important part in a child’s Christian walk. Hopefully I will plant a seed that sprouts faith in them. ” (Isaac Dyer) “I feel compelled. Something inside me says I’ve got to do it.” (Dylan Hutchinson)

“’Jesus said ‘Let the children come to me’, and we want to show the love of Jesus to the future generation of the church. This also may be the only opportunity for these children to hear the gospel”. (Amy Richter, Amie Rampton, Rebecca Cayzer)

NEW LEARNING SUPPORT ROOM

Over the year end, the old photographic darkroom was

transformed into the new Learning Support room. The

old Learning Support room will be incorporated into the

refurbished Food Technology room when work begins

on that at the end of Term 3.

Special thanks to the proprietors and Mr Roger Marshall

for all the effort that has gone into creating a larger,

comfortable and more user-friendly room for everyone

who uses Learning Support.

‘BEYOND THE SEARCH’ DVDs

Adventist media has brought out a 12 DVD set called Beyond the Search. These are excellent high-interest DVDs that tell the Christian story and answer life’s big questions in a documentary format. So far the production has won 14 international awards for this series. The college library has a set and parents are welcome to take DVD’s out individually. (Get your student to bring one home for you!) More information and trailers for each DVD can be viewed at: www.beyond.info

DID YOU RECEIVE THIS NEWSLETTER IN THE MAIL

AS A PRINTED GREYSCALE COPY?

If so, this is because you have not provided us with an email address to send it electronically, which is our preferred method to save paper, printing costs and time. Students are no longer being provided with paper copies to take home. If you are able to have the newsletter sent via email you will receive it the same day it is produced, and in full colour. It is also worthy of note

that other communications to parents/caregivers are also often sent by email. Please send your email address to [email protected] to be added to our distribution list. Much appreciated, thank you.
