overlayswhy WAFFLE

one facility’s story...In 2012, Shelby Baptist Medical Center—like many others—realized it was over-utilizing low air loss ther-apy beds. The specialty beds were being ordered for at-risk patients not yet exhibiting skin breakdown.

As a result, the medical cen-ter was incurring an average monthly cost of $4,800 for the rental beds — $57,600 annually.

$51.80 Per Bed Per Day.

As the facility looked into support sur-faces, the group came across EHOB and its WAFFLE brand products.

The WAFFLE mattress overlay not only presented itself as a solution for decreasing rental bed costs, but also as a pressure-reducing surface that made it easy to transfer and reposition patients.

Since September 2012, the facility reduced its number of billed days for therapy beds by 62% per month. Using WAFFLE Overlays the facility is now paying 50 percent less for rental therapy beds as opposed to the year prior.Reference:Shelby Baptist Medical Center, AlabamaMatthew Moton, Director of Supply Chain ManagementGinger Bentley, CWCA

Clinical Challenge:To compare the efficacy of different surfaces in the preven-tion of pressure ulcers in relation to: cost, patient comfort and clinical outcome.

Clinical Solution:There was no significant difference in pressure ulcer inci-dence or patient comfort between the control and experi-mental groups. There was, however, a significant difference in cost: $16,086 for the microfluid static overlay and low air loss dynamic mattress (MSO & LALM) vs. $3,364 for the inflated static overlay (ISO).

The Importance of Immersion Immersion is defined as the action of immersing someone or something completely in liquid. On a support surface, it is the depth in which the body sinks into the product. And, in relation to pressure ulcers and patient safety, more immersion is better.

Immersion in tandem with envelopment (how the support surface conforms to the body shape once immersed in the product) was deemed particularly important upon the egress or ingress of the patient, in a NPUAP-sponsored webinar, Bear of a Problem: Who should be sleeping in which bed? In the same presentation the static air overlay recorded the highest level of immersion.

* Mackey, D., Call, E. Bear of a Problem: Who should be sleeping in which bed? National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel Webinar. September 13, 2013.
