    We have the honor to present youin brief, at this ceremony, the careerand profile of Professor Stefan Hell.Stefan W. Hell is a scientific mem-

    ber of theMax Planck Society and adirector at the Max Planck Institute

    for Biophysical Chemistry inGttingen, where he currently leadsthe Department of NanoBiopho-tonics. He is an honorary professorof experimental physics at the Uni-versity of Gttingen and adjunctprofessor of physics at the Univer-sity of Heidelberg. Since 2003 he

    Profesorul Stefan Hell este celcare a deschis un domeniu nntregime nou n fizic, cel alnanoscopiei optice.     Professor Stefan Hell is the one

    who opened an entirely newdomain in physics, the optical

    nanoscopy. His exceptional works

    are spadework in the domain of

    super-resolution optical microscopy

    with broad applications in nano-

    sciences and nano-technologies. Dr.Hell has a definite contribution in

    breaking the resolution limit

    imposed by the diffraction and

    represented by the mathematical

    formula discovered by Abbe in

    1873. The exceptional discovery of

    professor Hell has huge imply-

    cations in this moment in life

    sciences research. Certainly, this

    will contribute to a successfully

    understanding of the nanoscopic

    scale phenomena studied in mate-

    La 23 decembrie 1962, la Arad s-anscut copilul Stefan Hell, care lapuin peste 30 de ani avea sdevin o celebritate incontestabiln lumea tiinei. i-a petrecutcopilria n comuna Sntana undea urmat cursurile colii generale,

    ntre 1969 i 1977. S-a nscris laliceul Nikolaus Lenau dinTimioara n 1977, ale cruicursuri le-a urmat pn n martie1978. i-a manifestat interesulpentru tiinele exacte nc dincursul colii generale, fiind

    puternic ncurajat de ctre prini.n aprilie 1978 a plecat n Ger-

    mains of life sciences. The impor-

    tance of this discovery is funda-

    mental for medical research. The

    fact that the invention of professor

    Hell was followed by an explosion

    of publications in journals of great

    prestige and the apparition of

    new investigation techniques

    based on this discovery clearly

    highlights its value.

    In December 23, 1962 the childStefan Hell was born in Arad andin his early 30s he become an

    incontestable celebrity in scienceworld. He spent his childhood inSantana village where he fol-

    lowed middle school between1969 and 1977. In 1977 he went tohigh-school Nikolaus Lenau inTimisoara and he attended thehigh school until March 1978. He

    proved high interest for exactsciences since middle school,

    being encouraged by his parents.In April 1978 he moved with hisparents in Ludwigshafen, Ger-many, where he followed thehigh-school courses until 1981,when he graduated. During highschool he was remarked not justfor his knowledge in physics and

    mania mpreun cu prinii,stabilindu-se la Ludwigshafen,unde a urmat cursurile de liceu,susinnd bacalaureatul n 1981.

    n liceu s-a impus, ajungnd ntop, nu doar prin cunotinele ndomeniile fizicii i matematicii,dar i n cele ale limbii germane,lingvistica i etimologia devenindun hobby al su, n ncercarea dea descoperi legturile ntre

    cuvinte derivate din diferitelelimbi germanice i schimbrilefonetice.

    n perioada 1981 - 1987 a urmatcursurile Facultii de Fizic laUniversitatea din Heidelberg. Laaceeai universitate a obinut titlul

    de doctor n fizic, n anul 1990,cu calificativul maxim (summacum laude).

    Activitatea tiinific a profe-sorului Hell a nceput devreme, nperioada facultii, i s-a mani-festat prin interesul fa derezoluia microscoapelor optice.Din pcate, nu a gsit un sprijin ncadrul universitii pentru acestdomeniu, care n acea period nuera privit ca unul de interes. Dupobinerea titlului de doctor, oare-cum dezamgit de dezinteresul

    fa de acest domeniu, fiind lipsit

    Between 1981-1987 he attendedthe courses of Physics Facultyfrom Heidelberg University. Here

    in 1990 he obtained the doctoraltitle in Physics with Summa CumLaude.

    The scientific activity of professor

    Hell begun early in faculty and

    was manifested by interest in the

    domain of optical microscopyresolution. Unfortunately he

    didn't find in University any

    support for this domain, which at

    that time was an uninteresting

    domain. After he obtained his

    doctoral title, disappointed by thelack of interest regarding this

    domain and having no financial

    resources, he spent a couple of

    months in solitude probably to

    find solutions and to crystallize

    his ideas. In a short time being

    financially supported by his

    publicat n Optics Letters.Microscopul 4Pi reprezint primamare realizare a lui Stefan Hell,dat fiind c aceasta a condus laobinerea unei rezoluii de ordinula 100 nm, aceasta reprezentnd ombuntire de cteva ori a celei

    obinute n microscopia confocal.mbuntirea rezoluiei s-a fcutcu ajutorul a dou obiective pla-sate n opoziie, care au focalizatlumina pe aceeai arie. n acest fel,probele plasate n aria comundin planul focal pot fi iluminatecu lumin coerent din ambelepri, iar lumina reflectat sau defluorescen poate fi colectat ncantitate mult mai mare icoerent. n aceste condiii, unghiulsolid folosit pentru iluminare idetecie se apropie de cazul ideal.Este de remarcat faptul c aceast

    first 4Pi microscope, which was

    patented by him in 1991. He

    presented the experimental rea-

    lization of his invention in 1994 in

    an article published in Optics

    Letters. 4Pi microscope is the first

    great achievement of Stefan Hell;

    because this microscope has a

    resolution of the order of 100 nm,

    this represents an improvement ofseveral times of that obtained in

    confocal microscopy. The reso-

    lution improvement was obtained

    using two microscope objectives

    placed in opposition, which

    focused the light on the samearea. In this way, the samples

    placed in the common area of the

    focal plane can be illuminated

    with coherent light from both

    sides, and the reflected or

    fluorescent light can be collected

    in a greater quantity and

    coherently.

    Under these conditions the solid

    angle used for illumination and

    detection is closer to the ideal

    case. It is remarkable the fact that

    these exceptional achievements of

    cercettor Stefan Hell a fostobinut n ciuda unor dificultifinanciare deosebite. Astfel, dein acea perioad Consiliul

    German al Cercetrii iniiase unprogram pentru dezvoltarea denoi tehnici microscopice cuaplicaii n biologie, Stefan Hellnu a avut ansa obinerii unorfonduri, dei era doctor n fizic.Neavnd un laborator propriu i

    fr un mentor care s-l sprijine,el nu a ntrunit criteriile necesarepentru a obine finanare.Singurul lucru pozitiv n aceaperioad a fost faptul c a obinutun grant post-doctoral, ntre 1991i 1993, la Laboratorul European

    de Biologie Molecular dinHeidelberg, care i-a oferit posi-bilitatea de a-i publica primelerezultate. Dei acestea au fostdeosebit de valoroase, n Ger-mania nu a putut obine mai mult,la acea vreme. n baza ajutoruluidat de un prieten finlandez, aintrat n contact cu un profesordin Finlanda care, la acea vreme,lucra n domeniul microscopiei cufluorescen aplicat n cercetrimedicale. Astfel, a obinut un postde cercettor principal n cadrulgrupului de microscopie cu baleiaj

    laser la Universitatea din Turku,

    young researcher Stefan Hell were

    obtained despite of great financial

    difficulties. Although at that time

    the German Research Council

    initiated a program for new

    microscopy techniques develop-

    ments with applications in

    biology, Stefan Hell could not

    obtain any founds. He did not

    meet the requirements because he

    had no laboratory and no guidingprofessor. The only positive thing

    at that time was that he obtained a

    post-doctoral grant between 1991

    and 1993 at European Molecular

    Biology Laboratory from Hei-

    delberg, where he could publishhis first results. Although these

    results were very valuable, he

    could not obtain more in Ger-

    many. With the help of a Finland

    friend he contacted a professor

    from Finland who was working at

    that time in the area of fluo-

    rescence microscopy for medical

    research applications. Here he got

    the job of senior researcher in

    laser scanning microscopy group

    at the University of Turku, where

    he worked between 1993 and 1996

    unde a lucrat n perioada 1993 -1996, cu o ntrerupere n 1994,cnd s-a aflat la Londra, n Depar-tamentul de Inginerie al Univer-

    sitii Oxford. n aceast perioad,Stefan Hell a fcut o descoperireteoretic excepional, constnddintr-un principiu n baza cruiarezoluia n microscopia optic atrecut bariera dat de limitareadatorat difraciei. Acesta a fost

    momentul n care rezoluia optic,descris de relaia lui Abbe iconsiderat ca fiind de netrecut, afost depit de tnrul cercettornscut n Romnia. Aceastdescoperire teoretic se afl labaza unei realizri practice de

    excepie, care aparine, de ase-menea, lui Stefan Hell. Este vorbade microscopia cu baleiaj laserbazat pe golirea prin emisiestimulat (STED - stimulatedemmision depletion). Prin intro-ducerea conceptului de golireprin emisie stimulat, StefanHell a iniiat un domeniu decercetare absolut nou nmicroscopie, n cadrul cruia s-aajuns la o rezoluie de ordinulnanometrilor.

    Ca ntodeauna n cazul marilor

    genii, Stefan Hell a exploatat unlucru aparent simplu, obinnd

    time Stefan Hell did an

    outstanding theoretical discovery

    consisting of a principle that

    makes possible the overcoming of

    diffraction limit by the optical

    resolution. In this way, the young

    researcher born in Romaniapassed the optical resolution

    described by Abbe and con-

    sidered to be unbreakable. This

    exceptional theoretical discovery

    stands at the base of an

    experimental achievement ofStefan Hell. It is the laser scanning

    microscopy with Stimulated

    Emission Depletion (STED). By

    introducing the concept of

    stimulated emission depletion

    Stefan Hell initiated an entirely

    new research domain in

    microscopy, which led to a

    resolution of order of nanometers.

    As always happens in the case of

    greatest minds, Stefan Hell

    exploited an apparently simple

    thing obtaining fluorescence

    optical microscope equipped with

    a laser scanning system with two

    beams, one for excitation neces-

    sary for obtaining fluorescence

    from an area of the sample (for

    which resolution is limited by thespot size on the sample) and

    another beam (sent in the same

    area in the moment when the

    molecules are in an excited state)

    which is tuned on the fluorescent

    emission wavelength. The secondbeam having a longer wavelength

    that that of excitation is designed

    to achieve a stimulated de-

    excitation in a similar way with

    stimulated laser emission. Before

    focusing on the sample the beam

    which attains the depletion passes

    through an optical interference

    device (phase plate) that realizes

    an interference minimum in the

    middle of the beam, modifying

    the beam shape into a doughnut

    shape. In this way, the intensity of

    au fost fr rezultat, probabil dincauza faptului c nu a fostneleas importana descoperirii.

    Lucrarea privind aceast excep-ional descoperire a fostpublicat n revista Optics Express

    n anul 1994. Ulterior, n modsigur cu mare regret pentru

    the depletion beam will be zero in

    the middle. Thus, the already

    excited area will be de-excited in

    the exterior edge and the

    spontaneous emission which

    gives the fluorescence signal will

    be emitted just from the central

    part of the beam. By increasing

    the intensity of the stimulating

    depletion beam, the depleted zone

    will increase and the central partof the beam (from which we

    obtain fluorescence signal) will

    decrease. Thus fluorescence signal

    can be obtained from a small zone

    of several nanometers, which is

    well below the diffraction limit.The attempts of young Stefan Hellto publish in Nature or Science histheoretical results regarding theresolution improvement by usingstimulated emission depletionwere unsuccessful, probably be-

    cause the importance of hisdiscovery was not understood.The work regarding thisexceptional discovery waspublished in Optics Express in1994. After this, with great regretfor loosing the priority of

    publishing an exceptionaldiscovery, both Nature and

    n ciuda descoperirii teoreticeepocale pe care a fcut-o nFinlanda, cercettorul Hell s-aconfruntat din nou cu probleme

    financiare, de aceast dat legatede finanarea cercetrii n Fin-landa, ceea ce l-a determinat sapeleze din nou la institutele iuniversitile din Germania. Deaceast dat, Tom Jovin, la aceadat director la Institutul MaxPlank pentru Chimie Biofizic din

    Gottingen, l-a numit conductorulunui grup de cercetare format dintineri. Revenit n Germania, atrecut la realizarea practic ainveniei sale, construind microsco-pul de super-rezoluie n perioada1999 - 2000. n 2002 este numit

    director la Institutul Max Planckpentru Chimie Biofizicicondu-ctorul departamentului de Nano-Biofotonic.

    La Institutul Max Planck a creatun grup de cercetare de excepie,format din fizicieni, chimiti,

    biologi i ingineri. Rezultatelecercetrilor pot fi ntlnite n mare

    Despite the importance of his

    discovery he made in Finland,

    researcher Hell faced some new

    financial problems regarding the

    research in Finland. Thus, he

    searched help from institutes and

    universities from Germany. This

    time, Tom Jovin who was thedirector at Max Planck Institute

    for Biophysical Chemistry from

    Gottingen appointed him leader

    of a young research group. In

    Germany he managed to build his

    super-resolution microscopeinvention between 1999 and 2000.

    In 2002 he was appointed director

    at Max Planck Institute for

    Biophysical Chemistry, being the

    leader in the Nano-bio-photonics

    department.

    At Max Planck Institute hecreated an exceptional researchgroup composed by physicists,chemists, biologists and engine-ers. Their many research results

    can be found in the most im-portant journals. Wherever are

    numr n cele mai prestigioasereviste de specialitate. Pretutin-deni unde sunt ntlnii cerce-ttorii care i-au desfurat

    activitatea n grupul lui StefanHell, sunt recunoscui ca unii demare valoare.

    n ceea ce privete activitateaacademic, un fapt remarcabileste c n anul 1996, la vrsta de34 de ani, a primit cel mai nalt

    grad academic la Universitateadin Heidelberg: habilitation.

    n prezent este profesor laFacultatea de Fizic a Universitiidin Heidelberg i profesor onori-fic la Facultatea de Fizic a

    Unversitii din Goetingen. Ar fide remarcat faptul c a avut pro-puneri foarte tentante de la douUniversiti de mare prestigiu:Kings College din Londra iUniversitatea Harvad. Pe ambelele-a declinat, n dorina de a lucrala Institutul Max Planck.

    n ceea ce privete activitateapublicistic, se poate spune cntre cercettorii de mare valoarecare lucreaz n domeniul reali-zrii de tehnici microscopiceoptice sau n cel al aplicaiilor

    acestora, prof. Stefan Hell poate ficonsiderat cu certitudine un lider

    A remarkable fact is that in 1996at age 34 he received the highestacademic degree at HeidelbergUniversity: habilitation.

    Today he is professor at Faculty ofPhysics in Heidelberg University

    and honorary professor at Facultyof Physics in Gottingen Univer-sity.

    It is remarkable that he receivedsome proposals as a professor attwo universities of great prestige:Kings College from London and

    Harvard University. He refusedboth, wishing to work at MaxPlanck Institute.

    Regarding his publishing activity,it can be saying that professorStefan Hell certainly is an

    uncontested leader among thegreatest researchers who work inoptical microscope techniquesdomain or in their applications.

    It is a common thing that the

    activity results of the group led by

    Stefan Hell from Max Planck

    Institute to be published in jour-

    de necontestat. Publicarea rezulta-telor tiinifice de ctre grupul dela Institutul Max Planck, condusde profesorul Hell, n cele mai

    prestigioase reviste, Science iNature, a devenit un lucruobinuit.

    n urma cercetrilor efectuate,profesorul Stefan Hell a publicatpeste 200 de lucrri tiinifice nreviste de specialitate de presti-

    giu. A enumera cele mai valoroaserezultate obinute de ProfesorulHell i publicate n reviste tiini-fice este un lucru de o dificultateextrem, dat fiind numrul mare alacestora. Oricare dintre acesteapoate fi considerat ca referin n

    domeniu.

    Printre revistele de prestigiu ncare a publicat lucrrile sale aenumera doar cteva: Nature,Science, Optics Expess, Rev.Scientific Instruments, J. Appl.Letters, J. Opt. Soc. Am. A.,Nature Biotechnology Appl. Phys,Physical Rev, Phys. Rev. Letters,

    Journal of Cell Biology, NatureMethods etc.

    After his researches, Stefan Hell

    published more than 200 scientificpapers in prestigious journals. It

    is very difficult to count the most

    valuable results published in

    scientific journals because they

    are so many. Any of them can be

    considered as a domain reference.

    Among the prestigious journals in
