El Second Harvest Food Bank

T he Second Harvest Food Bank is an organization that was formed in order to serve and help thousands of peo-ple every month, to provide food for the whole family, in our city we have this organization and a group of people

who help to meet throughout the whole goal of this company.

Also, one of the organizations in our community, Alfa & Omega Church, is committed to helping and serving the Spanish speaking community (They also serve those who speak English). The Food Supply team led

by Rosemary Ruiz, contributes monthly to this noble cause, to gather all the food needed, manage, and ultimately distribute to each household or person who has enrolled in this process.

The way to sign up is very simple you just have to fill the form, have it delivered, to be eligible every month for your food; this service is free of charge, totally free. The only require-

ment needed is a proof of address and if you have proof of income, plus anyone with Food Stamps (SNAPS pro-gram) automatically qualifies for this service.

This program takes place at the end of each month, and for

those who are regis-tered, they receive calls a day before to come and retrieve their food.

The essential thing is to not miss the op-portunity to be part of this great benefit, applications are

Asimismo, una de las organizaciones de nuestra comu-nidad, La Iglesia Alfa & Omega, se ha avocado ayudar y a servir a la colectividad de habla hispana (y tambien los que hablan ingles). El Equipo de Distribucion de

Comida, liderado por Rosemary Ruiz, contribuye mensualmente con esta noble causa, para juntar toda la comida necesaria, ad-ministrarla, y finalmente repartirla a cada grupo familiar o persona que se ha inscrito en este proceso.

La manera de inscribirse es muy sencilla solo tienes que llenar el formulario que se te entregue, para poder optar mes a mes por tu comida. Este servicio es sin costo alguno, totalmente gratuito. El único requerimiento es una

verificación de domicilio y si cuentaS con un comprobante de in-gresos, ademas toda persona que tenga Food Stamp (programa SNAP) califica automáticamente con este servicio.

Es importante recalcar, que este programa se realiza a finales de cada mes, y para aquellas personas que estén inscritas se les hace un llamado con anterioridad para que asista el día y hora seleccionada a retirar sus alimentos.

HOW YOU CAN START FORMING CREDITCOMO COMENZAR A FORMAR CRÉDITO

M e da gusto estar nue-vamente con ustedes mis queridos amigos,

y como lo prometí en la edición an-terior, ahora vamos a tocar el tema de “Como crear crédito y como limpiarlo y mantenerlo.

Una de las cosas que es primordial para poder obtener una casa es

obtener un préstamo bancario, ya que la mayoría de la gente no cuenta con dinero disponible en las cantidades que se necesitan para comprar una casa. Tendríamos que pasarnos toda una vida ahorrando para que al final de ella pudiéramos decir “ya tengo lo suficiente para comprar mi casa”, pero entonces ya no la podríamos gozar.

Para que el préstamo pudiera ser otorgado, el prestamis-ta, lo primero que ve es

como esta nuestro crédito al abrirlo y es donde a veces nos topamos con el primer obstáculo. A veces por pensar que es mejor comprar las cosas al contado nunca formamos crédito y cuando nos sentamos con un prestamista, este nos dice: “No le podemos otorgar el préstamo porque no ha formado crédito y no sabemos como va usted a respond-er a los pagos mensuales ya que nosotros nos basamos en el crédito formado y usted no lo tiene”. Esta es una frustración grande porque aunque nuestra vida este en orden y siempre hayamos pagado a tiempo nuestras obligaciones cotidianas (renta, luz, teléfono, Direct TV etc.)

los presta-mistas no ven eso, sino lo que esta escrito en el historial crediticio. En este caso nos tendríamos que esperar a que pasara todo un ano para formar un buen crédito.

Hay varias maneras para comenzar a formar crédito que son efectivas, sin

llegar a endeudarse, una de ellas es obteniendo la llamada tarjeta de crédito segura y la otra a través de un CD bancario. Yo estaría dispuesta a ayudarles a comenzar a formar su crédito para que en un futuro cerca-no pudiesen obtener ese préstamo tan necesario para obtener su casa. Simplemente tienen que llamarme y haremos una cita en la cual abrire-mos su crédito y de ahí partir. Estoy totalmente disponible en ayudarlos a comenzar a obtener crédito para que el prestamista pueda tramitarles ese préstamo tan deseado y necesario para poder comprar su casa. Nueva-mente les recuerdo que mis servicios son totalmente gratuitos.

El próximo mes hablaremos de cual es el mínimo crédito que deben tener para comenzar

el trámite de un préstamo y como es que podríamos limpiar su crédito en caso que este estuviese dañando y mantenerlo.

and it is when we often face the first obstacle. Sometimes by thinking that buying everything cash we never form credit and when we sit down with a mortgage broker he tells us “We cannot grant you a loan because we will not know how you will keep up with your monthly payments as we base our decision on your credit and you don’t have any”. This is a big frustration as even if everything in our lives is in order and you are paying

your duties on time (rent, utilities, telephone bills, Direct TV, etc.) the lenders do not see that but what is written on your Credit History. In this case we will have to wait for a full year to develop good credit.

There are several ways that are effective to start forming credit, without going into

debt. One of them is to get a secure credit card and another one is to go with a bank CD. I will be more than happy to help you in starting to form credit so in a near future you will obtain that necessary loan to get your home. Simply call me and we will set an appointment, we will open your credit and go from there. I’m totally available to help you to start obtaining your credit so the mortgage broker can start processing your loan, so necessary to purchase your home. Next month we will talk about what’s the mini-mum credit score that you

should have to start the process of getting a loan and also how you can clean your credit history in case that this will be damage and to maintain it in good standard.

A Mexican native born in the city and state of Queretaro, has been influencing our community since

1966.From a very young age she prepared herself by studying foreign languages such as English and French. She graduated from a prestigious university in Mexico in pharmaceutical science and biology. Once she arrived to the USA she volunteered in a free commerce program and she worked her way up by involving herself with the world trade center of New Orleans. This opened several doors for her and she was able to travel to 17 coun-tries in 5 different continents. One of her greatest accomplishments is to be one of the first Latin women to receive the key of the city of Lafayette for her involvement in the United Nations in 1999. Estela is not only well known for her dedication to our community but also for her love for Mayan history, which showcases a vast collection of artifacts. Her collections are mostly composed of Mayan instruments as old as 1,500 years old. But she shared that some of her favorite items are her eccentric mask, 24k gold pieces, precious gemstones and even a fully dressed mannequin with royal Mayan attire. Estela shared that her artifacts will be displayed at the Light Center on December 21, 2012, when the Mayan calendar officially ends. Also she is a well involved member of ACLA and is looked up as a socialite in the state of Louisiana for her close connections with mayors and governors here in the state.

Is truly an Honor to our Hispanic community for her dedication to her work

through the decades and her perseverance not only to preserve HISTORY but TO MAKE HER OWN HISTORY.

Una nativa mexicana nacida en la ciudad y estado de Querétaro, ha estado influyendo nuestra comunidad desde 1966. Desde su corta edad, ella se preparó

y estudio diferentes leguas como inglés y francés. Se ter-minó graduando de una prestigiosa universidad en Ciencias Farmacéuticas y Biología, una vez que llegó a los Estados Unidos, se envolvió como voluntaria en un programa de libre comercio y pronto subió de posición al involucrarse con el World Trade Center de Nueva Orleans. Esto le abrió varias puertas, y tuvo la oportunidad de viajar a 17 países en 5 diferentes continentes. Estela considera que uno de sus mayores logros es ser una de las Primeras

Mujeres Latinas en recibir la llave de la ciudad de Lafayette por su participación en las Naciones Unidas en 1999. Estela no sólo es conocida por su dedicación a la comunidad, sino también por su amor por la historia Maya. Ella tiene una vas-ta colección de artefactos que com-ponen principalmente instrumentos Mayas con una antigüedad de aprox-imadamente 1,500 años, pero

ella nos compartió que algunos de sus artículos favoritos son sus máscaras excéntricas, piezas de oro de 24kilates, piedras preciosas e incluso un maniquí con vestidos y atu-endo real maya. Estela nos compartió, que sus artefactos se expondrán el 21 de diciembre de 2012 en el cen-tro de luz, cuando el calendario Maya termina oficialmente. Asimismo, está muy involucrada con ACLA y es consid-erada una mujer de sociedad en el estado de Louisiana por sus relaciones cercanas con los alcaldes y gobernadores del estado.

Es un verdadero honor para nuestra comunidad hispana por su dedicación a su tra-

bajo a través de las décadas y su perseverancia no sólo para preser-var la HISTORIA, pero también CREAR SU PROPIA HISTO-RIA.

La paciencia que todos debemos tenerThe patience we should all have

El avance de los tiempos, la ciencia y la tecnología, nos han vuelto un mundo

microondas, en donde todo lo queremos mas rápido, al in-stante, hasta el punto en el que las nuevas generaciones cre-cen sin tomarse el tiempo para pensar, meditar en el desarrollo de un problema matemático porque todo lo responde una calculadora, una computadora o un teléfono sin necesidad de esperar.

Pero o que no ha cambiado a través de nuestra vida es que cada uno tenemos

diferentes pruebas, unas mas duras que otras, con diferente duración de tiempo, en donde se desarrolla en nuestro interior una purificación, una mayor fe y algo que es de suma importan-cia, y que necesitamos todo el tiempo llamada PACIENCIA.

En 1 Pedro 1.6, esta escrito que debemos ALEGRARNOS,

aunque ahora estemos por un corto tiempo afligidos en diversas pruebas. Para nues-tra razón es una locura, pero la clave es que dice que es “poco tiempo”. O sea que la prueba tendrá fin, tiene fecha de expiración, y cuando po-demos entender esto, se activa una virtud tan importante y necesaria como la PACIENCIA.

PACIENCIA viene del latín “PATI “ que significa “SUFRIR” ,y a partir de

aquí se usa la palabra para denominar a los enfermos de los hospitales como pacientes o aquellos que sufren.

Pero el fruto de la paciencia no es quedarnos pa-sivos, sino que el seguir

con perseverancia y correcta actitud hasta alcanzar la rec-ompensa. LA PACIEN-CIA es un rasgo de madurez, un desarrollo de sensibilidad

mayor. Es la que nos hace pasar toda situación sin derrumbar- nos. Se ve en lo mas sencillo, desde hac-er una larga fila para que nos atiendan, o una cita medica, o un viaje largo con niños en el trafico, en donde escogemos desesperarnos o aprovecha-mos para hacer algo útil como hablar y escuchar a nuestros hijos o leer un libro o meditar en nuestra agenda. LA PA-CIENCIA ayuda a nuestra CREATIVIDAD, nos lleva a aprovechar mejor el tiempo.

La paciencia nos hace VALIENTES. Cuando tenemos un tiempo corto

para enfrentar los problemas, tendemos a desesperarnos, a irritarnos, a gritar y genera-mos un caos pero sin lograr un resultado. Lo que debemos hacer es enfrentar el problema, Gedeón, David y otros perso-najes de la biblia tuvieron que marchar a la batalla y enfrentar al enemigo. No queda de otra mas que hacerse valiente y PERSEVERANTE.

CREATIVIDAD, PER-SEVERANCIA, VAL-ENTIA,Y SENSIB-

ILIDAD son el resultado de activar la paciencia en nosotros y esta virtud solo la conseguimos con la ayuda del Espíritu Santo quien nos prepara para recibir después de ese corto tiempo, después de la prueba, al gran recompensa, LA VICTORIA.

times, science and technology have turned us into a micro-wave world, where we want everything fast, instantly, up to the point where the new gen-erations grow up without taking the time to meditate in the de-velopment of a math problem because everything responds to a calculator, computer or even their pone, without having to wait.

But what hasn’t changed in our lives is that each one of us has to go through

trials, some tougher than others, with different durations where in our inner self we get to develop a purification, a greater faith and something that is of the uttermost importance and that we need all the time: PATIENCE.

In 1st Peter 1.6,it is written that we should REJOICE even though we

might, for a short time, afflict-ed in different trials. For our reason this is madness, but the key is that it says “for a

short time”. This means that the trial will come to an end, it has an expiration date and when we are able to understand this, a virtue is activated, that is so important and

necessary: PATIENCE.

PATIENCE comes from the Latin word “PATI

“ which means “TO SUF-FER”, and hence the reason

why the word is used to name the sick at the hospitals: PA-TIENTS, or those who suffer.

But the fruit of patience is not to remain passive, but to continue with persever-

ance, and the right attitude until we reach the reward. PA-TIENCE is a trait of maturity, a development of a greater sensi-bility. It is what gets us through every situation without falling apart. You can see it in the simplest things, such a making a line as we wait to be helped, or at a doctors appointment, or in traffic with our children, where we choose to become desperate or make the best of it by talking with our children, reading a book or catching up wit our schedule. PATIENCE helps our CREATIVITY and thus helps us make the best of our time.

PATIENCE makes us BRAVE. Whenever we have a short time to

confront problems, we tend to loose patience, to become irritated, to scream and gen-erate chaos but without any result. What we should do is to confront the problem. Gideon, David and other Bible charac-ters had to march into the battle and face the enemy. There’s nothing else left but be brave and be perseverant.

PORQUE CELEBRAR EL DíA DE ACCIóN DE GRACIASWHY WE SHOULD CELEBRATE THANKSGIVING

para hacer una fiesta no necesitamos excusa, pero esta es una buenísima razón para celebrar.

El día de Acción de Gracias es un excelente recor-datorio de una de las actitudes mas importantes que debemos mantener SIEMPRE: La gratitud. El ser agradecidos trae dulzura y sazón a la vida, nos ayuda a superar dificultades y a revivir esperanzas. Sobre todo nos ayuda a enfocarnos en lo BUENO que hay en lugar de ver solo lo malo.Celebremos el día de Acción de Gracias PORQUE:

1. Estamos agradecidos que tenemos un Dios miser-cordioso que es fiel. (Esta fue la razón por la cual el

Presidente Lincoln estableció como fecha oficial de Ac-ción de Gracias el ultimo Jueves de cada Noviembre).

2. Estamos agradecidos por cada bendición de la que gozamos en el presente: familia, amigos, traba-

jo, negocio, salud, (enumerarlas para valorarlas…)

3 . Es una oportunidad para compartir en familia y amigos,

muchos tienen el día libre y podem-os ir de visita.

4 . Aprovechamos a comer una comida excepcional (El tradi-

cional pavo y todo lo que le acom-paña).

5. Podemos ver juntos los me-jores partidos de Futbol Ameri-

cano.

6. Se disfruta del buen clima afuera: haciendo deporte, en un

picnic o simplemente disfrutando el paisaje.

7. Es el mejor tiempo para hacer compras con grandes rebajas (¡Viernes Negro!).

8. ¡Es el inicio oficial del tiempo de Navidad!

of the most important attitudes that we should AL-WAYS have: Thankfulness. Being thankful bring sweet-ness and spice to life, it helps us overcome difficulties and revive hope. Above all it helps us focus on the GOOD instead of the bad.

Let’s celebrate Thanksgiving Day BECAUSE:

1. We give thanks that we have a merciful God who is faithful. (This was the reason President Lincoln estab-

lished a Thanksgiving official day every last Thursday of each November).

2. We give thanks for every blessing we have pres-ently: family, friends, work, business, health (you

should list them to be reminded…..)

3. It’s an opportunity to visit with family and friends, since most people have

the day off we can get to see them.

4. We get to eat an exceptional meal (The traditional turkey and everything

that comes with it!)

5. We can watch together the best Football games.

6. We can enjoy the great weath-er outside: playing sports, a picnic, or

simply by enjoying the scenery.

7. It’s the best time to go shop-ping with great sales (Black Friday!)

8. It is the official start of the Christmas season!

ue algunos de los inmigran-tes a este país deben mejo-rar modales, costumbres y

hábitos, lo sabemos. Que tenemos que aprender de la historia, cultura, idiosincrasia, lo sabemos y que todos debemos de aprender bien su lengua, el Ingles, lo sabe-mos. Pero el no saber todo eso y el tener que aprenderlo; no nos convierten en seres inferiores. Ni mucho menos denigra nuestra condición de ser seres humanos.

Los Hispanos somos una rica mezcla de culturas y razas: blan-cos, negros, amarillos, indios y mestizos. La mezcla de todas estas culturas y colores de piel, nos hicieron poseedores de UNA DIVERSIFICACION DE LOS VALORES DE LA RAZA HUMANA y ESTAMOS ORGULLOSOS DE ELLO. Entonces porque reducir a la sola condición de inmigrante todos nuestros valores, si los Hispanos también al igual que todos, hemos contribuido con nuestro esfuerzo, trabajo y talento a Enriquecer a América?

Estados Unidos es una nación formada por inmigrantes. Luisi-ana es el mejor ejemplo de ello. Sus bases culturales tienen sus orígenes en diferentes culturas: Francesa-Acadiana, Española-Canaria, Oeste de África e Inglesa. Todas estas, mezcladas con las culturas nativas o autócto-nas, forman la verdadera y real cultura del estado.

Los descendientes de estas prim-eras culturas son ahora ciudada-nos Norteamericanos, pero todos ellos son descendientes de inmi-

grantes, los cuales vinieron a estas tierras buscando nuevas oportunidades en sus vidas.

Los que ahora también somos inmigrantes, y como los primeros migrantes de otras culturas, hemos venidos a estas tierras en busca de nuevas oportunidades. Nuestros hijos al igual que las de todos, son descendientes de migrantes. Ellos están naciendo y nacerán en Norteamérica, por lo que también son ciudadanos

norteamericanos. Al igual que todos lo han hecho, ellos tratarán de mantener sus raíces culturales y trabajarán por hacer de este país el más desarrollado, multicul-tural, pero sobre todo el más justo y democrático del mundo.

Nosotros venimos en paz y con la real intención de integrarnos social y culturalmente. Solo les pedimos que nos lo permitan, que sean amables y respetuosos con nuestra comunidad, sus hábitos y cultura como nosotros somos con la suya, ello es integración y ello enriquece a América.

ners and better their habits, we know. That we need to learn the history, culture and idiosyncrasy, we know and that above all we need to learn the English language very well, we know. But not know-ing all of that and having to learn it, does not make us beings of an infe-rior quality. It does not lessen our condition as human beings.

Hispanics are a rich mix of cultures and races: white, black, yellow, Indian, and mixed. This mix is what makes us a DIVERISTY OF VALUES IN THE HUMAN RACE and WE ARE PROUD OF IF. So, why reduce to the condition of “immigrant”, all of our values, if we as Hispanics, just as everyone else have contributed with our effort, work and talent to enrich America?

The United States is a nation of immigrants. Louisiana is the best

example. Its cultural foundations are rooted in different cultures: French-Acadian, Spanish-Canarian, West African, and Eng-lish. All these are mixed with the native or indigenous cultures, and form the true and real culture of the state.

The descendants of these early cultures are now U.S. citizens, but they are all descendants of immigrants who came to this

country seeking new oppor-tunities for their lives.

Those of us who are now immigrants and, as the first migrants from other cultures, have come to this land in search of new oppor-tunities. Our children are like everyone else’s, descen-dants of immigrants; they will be born in America and will also be American citizens. As everyone else has done, they will try both to maintain their cultural roots and to work to make of

this country the most developed and multicultural, but especially the most righteous, and demo-cratic one in the world.

We come in peace with the inten-tion of social and cultural integra-tion. We only ask everyone to allow us to integrate, to be kind and respectful to our community, its habits and culture, just as we respect everyone else’s. This is integration and that enriches America.

REÍR CURAPROBLEMAS COMO:

adepresión, angustia, falta de autoestima e insomnio, así como prob-

lemas de relación. Cuando reímos se mueve el diafragma, los pulmones mueven doce litros de aire, en vez de los seis habituales, lo que mejora la respiración. Se fortal-ece el corazón, facilita la digestión al hacer vibrar el hígado, evita el estreñimiento, mejora la eliminación de la bilis y estimula el bazo. Baja la hipertensión aumentando el riego sanguíneo, ya que se rela-jan los músculos lisos de las arterias, lo que se reduce la presión arterial y se tonifican los músculos del rostro (una carcajada continúa activa casi todos ellos). Por si fuera poco las carcajadas generan una sana fatiga que elimina el insomnio.

INTERESANTE:

Especialistas descubrieron que la risa es un buen medicamento, renueva la energía del enfermo y le estimula ante su padecimiento y los enfermos de sida o cáncer tienen una mayor resistencia mientras mejor es su estado anímico (Canadá, en Ottawa, atienden con risoterapia).

AL REÍR EL CEREBRO HACE QUE NUESTRO CUERPO SEGREGUE

ENDORFINAS:

Las endorfinas, específicamente las encefalinas, tienen la capaci-dad de aliviar el dolor. Por ejem-plo, si al cabo de unos segundos desaparece el dolor producto de

un golpe, porque el cuerpo reaccionó sintetizando las endorfinas necesarias para atenuarlo. Las endorfinas envían mensajes desde el cere-bro hasta los linfocitos y otras

células para com-batir virus, bacte-rias y desempe-ñan otras funcio-nes, como el equilibrio entre el tono vital y la depresión, algo tan sencillo como estar bien o mal; y provocan un estado de euforia

una sensación de felicidad.Lo mejor de todo es que para segregar endorfinas no es nece-sario trotar o batir un récord, solo hay que reír, estar de buen humor... y eso es fácil, sola-mente hace falta decidirse. Asimismo, se dice que un minuto de risa diario equivale a 45 minutos de relajación.

Experts discovered that laugh-ter is good medicine, renews the energy of a patient and boosts them in their condition

and cancer and Aids patients have greater resistance as their mood gets better (Canada, Ottawa, they treat with l a u g h t e r therapy).

AS WE LAUGH THE BRAIN CAUSES THE BODY TO RELEASE

ENDORPHINS:

Endorphins, specifically ence-falines, have the capacity to relief pain. For example, in just a matter of seconds the pain disappears product of a blow because the body reacted synthesizing the endorphins necessary to reduce it. Endor-phins send messages from the brain to the lymphocytes and other cells to fight viruses, bacteria, and perform other functions, the equilibrium between vital tone and depres-sion, something as simple as being well or not; and cause a state of euphoria a sense of happiness. The best of all is that to secrete endorphins you don’t need to trot or beat a record, just laugh and be of good cheer... and this is easy all you need is to decide to do it.
