Welcome to our school....

Hot from the oven! Scone making with 5/6M was a big hit with all our visiting Grandparents.

And weren‟t they so delicious! Thank you, Mrs Mackay and our

budding chefs from Year 6 who made Grandparents Day so special

by providing the Devonshire Tea for all our visitors.

Thank you also to those doting grandparents who came along to our

celebrations. The day was especially enjoyable as we were able to

showcase our school and were thrilled with the number of grannies

who were able to attend. Another tradition is born!!

Student attendance is most important. When a student is absent

parents must send in a note of explanation, preferably the day the

child returns or ring the office as a verbal explanation is also

acceptable.

Currently our admin staff is spending a great deal of precious time

following up absences by sending home letters for the previous

week‟s absences this has allowed parents at least 7 days to respond.

Thank you to those parents who do respond with any queries about

absences but some parents are ignoring this letter and that means

that the absence is recorded as unjustified. Unjustified absences

remain on each child‟s attendance records until they complete their

schooling.

This week we are including Absence Explanation slips with the

letters which may be helpful for parents to return expediently.

Over the past week we have had our new water tank and outside

energy efficient lighting installed which was part of our National

Solar Schools Program – funding $13,210. We will have more

effective lighting for our OUTDOOR Movie Night around the

ablutions block and the old metal tanks have been removed from the

front end of the timber building.

We have invited the whole community including surrounding schools

the evening.

Tony Chu has volunteered to do our promotional video of students

learning and having fun at school role-playing various scenes about

our community. This will be very entertaining on the Movie Night.

All money collected for the cost of tickets, raffle prizes and food

will go directly to the school and teachers are carefully making

decisions and planning how best to spend the money to improve

learning at our school.

Yr4/5/6 EXCURSIONS for 2012

It‟s been quite a difficult process this year with so much discussion

about the Yr 4/5/6 excursions for this year and for subsequent

years.

The organising school only booked for Yr 5/6 to participate in the

Canberra Excursion. After concerns were highlighted by our staff

and parents it was decided that the change process needed to be

implemented correctly to provide adequate time for evaluation and

future planning. Yr 4 was to be included again but the organising

school was unable to change the booking for them to be included.

Consequently, we needed to provide a relevant learning experience

involving an overnight stay for all our Yr 4 students.

This is the plan:

1. Yr 5/6 students will definitely be going on the Canberra

Excursion and it‟s booked for 19/20/21 September which

is the last week of Term 3. They will not be going to the

snow. See attached note for further information about

paying a deposit to book a place for your child to

participate.

2. It is anticipated that Yr 4 will be going on an overnight

excursion to Blue Mountains/Jenolan Caves during the

year. I will update you as soon as I receive confirmation of

costs and the intended itinerary from the bus company.

We are a proud SunSmart School and thanks to our caring P&C we

have sunscreen available for students to use before they go to

lunch each day.

The slap timber bench now has a special name, The SunSmart

Bench, and this is where the sunscreen can be accessed.

If you do not want your child to use this sunscreen due to allergies

etc., please contact the office. Currently we don‟t have any families

who have indicated their child is not to use it.

A senior student has the responsibility to squirt a small amount on

the tips of fingers and each child can apply it to their nose and

cheeks. Students are expected to wash their hands and then

proceed to the lunch area.

Please note that all students will be required to attend school on

the first Monday of next term, 23 April as the School

Development Day has been moved to the last day of that term,

Friday 29 June.

COMING EVENTS

Combined Easter Scripture – this is now being held the first

Tuesday of Term 2, April 24 from 2 – 3pm. All welcome to attend.

Special Education in Ethics

Following the December 2010 amendment of the NSW Education

Act 1990, students who don‟t attend Scripture classes in NSW

public schools now have a legal right to receive philosophical ethics

classes (known as Special Education in Ethics) as an option to

supervised „private study.‟

As a school we are currently exploring the options of introducing an

ethics class for interested students from Years 5 and 6, with a view

to extending this to include Years 3 and 4 later in 2012. The ethics

classes that make up the curriculum are inquiry based. Children use

dialogue and discussion, learning how to think about ethical matters

through the give-and-take of reasoned argument. The classes are

delivered by Primary Ethics which is a not-for-profit organization

staffed by volunteers.

Before we can establish an ethics class at Central Mangrove, we

must have an Ethics Coordinator. This is a volunteer role,

responsible for liaison between the parents in a school community,

the ethics teacher, the principal of the primary school and Primary

Ethics. It requires 1-2 hours per week of administration and

communication, which can be done at times to suit the coordinator.

Anyone interested in volunteering to become our Ethics Coordinator

should look at www.primaryethics.com.au for a full description of

the ethics classes, the volunteering opportunities and the

recruitment process. Kulnura Primary School have been running an

ethics class since May 2011, and the coordinator there is happy to

discuss the role with any interested parties. Please contact Lorene

Alexander if you would like to take up this offer. Or for any

further comments or questions about the ethics class.

Shared Lunch –Thursday 5 April

On the last day of this term, Thursday 5 April, all students will

enjoy a class shared lunch. Notes will be sent home closer to the

date for parents to prepare the shared lunch menu for this day.

Please provide enough food for only the small group your child is in

as we don‟t want too much waste on the day. Please provide healthy

choices and not include soft drink – think of „waste free‟ ideas. Due

to limited space and time we cannot place food in the refrigerator

or heat meals up - all food will need to be sent to your child‟s

classroom. This WILL NOT be a mufti day.

Term 2 After School Sport Program (AASCP)

Applications are now being accepted for our Term 2 After School

Sport Program (AASCP). New enrolment forms will be sent home

with students currently enrolled in the program. Extra enrolment

forms are available from the school office. Please return forms by

the end of term 1. Sessions will commence Week 2 of Term 2.

IN THE SPOT LIGHT Grandparent’s Day

On 2 March we had a Grandparent‟s Day at our school. The

grandparents came along to see what

we were doing. The year 6 students

made scones with jam and cream for

the grandparents and they loved the

scones. Class 2/3AH did a song called

„When I‟m 64‟ and the grandparents

loved this also. We then concluded the

Assembly with Advance Australia Fair

and a special grandparent‟s song.

By Charlie 5/6M

On 2 March we had our Grandparent‟s Day. The day started for the

grandparents at 12:00pm.

Before tennis year 6 students made scones. We put flour, cream

and lemonade in a bowl and mixed it. Then we rolled it out and made

it into circles using glasses. Then we put them into the oven.

While we were at tennis the grandparents watched us play. Mark,

our coach welcomed them and talked about his grandparents.

Next, year 6 prepared the scones at Kid‟s Kitchen. We put on jam

and whipped cream. They were now ready to talk to the

grandparents. They were drinking coffee and tea. They really

enjoyed the scones. We had 2 left over for every student in our

class.

Next was the Assembly. It was the same as all the others except

we had a special song for the grandparents.

They all enjoyed the day very much and they loved our scones. The

day was a hit!

By Oliver 5/6M

Australian Rugby League (ARL) Development Day On Wednesday, 7 March Laurie and Jason from the ARL school

development team visited our school and each child attended a free

sports lesson. The lesson provided opportunities for the students to

develop their hand and eye coordination, ball passing skills and even

tackling skills. A big thank you to Laurie and Jason for a great

training and fitness lesson.

Harmony Day – 21 March

Students to wear sports uniform on this day.

Harmony Day is a day to celebrate the cultural diversity of

Australia. The theme for this year‟s Harmony Day is:

Sport – play - engage – inspire!

All Australians regardless of background are encouraged to plan or

participate in a sporting event to celebrate s sense of belonging,

acceptance and an understanding of different cultures.

At CMPS on this day all students will be participating in handball

competition. While students in years 4, 5 and 6 will also participate

in a Futsal workshop.

Can you help? Any volunteer assistance to work in our

school gardens would be greatly appreciated. Please

contact the school office or return attached return slip if

you can spare an hour or two to help improve our school garden

beds.

Library News........ Thank you to all of the

students who are bringing a

library bag to protect the

books they are borrowing. I do

use recycled plastic bags for those who have forgotten but being a

sustainable school we do not encourage continued use of these.

Library bags are available from the uniform shop or office for $7

or the CMPS enviro friendly shopping bags are also from the office

for $1.

Book Mobile visits the school on Wednesday 2.30pm – 3.30pm during

odd weeks. They have a great range of books, CD‟s and audio books

for loan. This service is for any members of Gosford Library. Please

let family and friends know as it is also for the community.

Poetry Party

We are officially CONNECTED! Some student s from 4/5/6 took

part in a video conference with author Libby Hathorn recently and

were guided through a poetry writing session for 1hr. This

opportunity was only available to 2 schools and CMPS showed they

were worthy participants. We hope to publish the poems titled “I

am a tree...” for you to read. Please return permission notes so that

your child can participate in any future video conference

opportunities.

I‟d also like to thank Sarah, Nicole, Nicky, Deb, Kylie, Linley, Jane

and Sharon for offering to assist with library tasks. There are

some bags of books ready to be covered containing all supplies but

they are too heavy (and valuable) to send home on the bus with

students. If you are able to collect them from school, just ask at

the office if I am not in and they will get them for you.

Our new library monitor roster is in place and over 20 students

form 4 teams which attend the library during lunch time to carry

out several important jobs. These include;

story time for infants, returns and loans,

shelving, PRC, shelf care and games. They have

shown great enthusiasm and those who show

consistency from 5/6 will be eligible to wear a

monitor badge.

Trapped By Oliver „Bam‟ the Iron Gate closed and the witch locked me up with the

shiny gold key!

She screeched, “You‟re TRAPPED,” as she ran off to her steaming

cauldron!!! Her curly frazzled hair seeped into the mixture she

stirred with her callous filled hands. She looked over me with her

blood shot eyes like a lion does a buffalo!! Getting out is going to be

a challenge.

The Strange phone call By Stephanie

“Hello” I said

“Please come to my place at two o‟clock” said a deep voice.

“Why and where, where is it” I asked.

He had already hung up. I was frozen in confusion. I put back the

phone. I waited until one o‟clock and rang back.

“I know it‟s you. At the front of my place is a surf board. I‟m on the

street called „Mummy Street‟” Beeeeeep. He hung up again.

At 1:45 I walked to his street.

“AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH”I screamed “Help me HEEEEELP”.

Parenting Insights by Michael Grose

7 ways to make this year your child‟s best year ever at school.

A new school year means a fresh start for students, Regardless of

your child‟s performance, they start school with a clean slate. A

break offers students the chance to begin new habits and adopt

new behaviours.

Here are 7 ideas to help make the most of the fresh start and

make this year your child‟s best year ever at school.

Commit your child to going to school every day on time

One of the most important things you can do to ensure your child

has a bright future is to make sure he or she goes to school every

day – and gets there on time. Kids spend more time asleep than at

school, so we need to maximise every day to get full value.

Help kids start each day well!

A good night‟s sleep, a healthy breakfast and some words of

encouragement from you will help set a positive tone for a day of

learning. That may mean that you adjust your managing routines so

that kids have plenty of time to get up, eat and get ready for the

day.

Establish work and study habits

The most successful students are those that develop regular study

habits that suit their lifestyle, their study style and their school‟s

expectations. Find out the work expectations from your child‟s

school and help them establish a work routine that matches.

Make sure your child gets enough sleep

Many children and young people are sleep-deprived, which impacts

on their well-being and their learning. A good night‟s sleep

consolidates learning, as well as assists future learning. Children

need between 10-12 hours of sleep each day, while teens need a

minimum of 9 hours. Help kids get sufficient sleep by having a

regular bed-time and get-up time each day. Have 45 minute wind-

down each night, and remove screens and mobile phones from

bedrooms.

Encourage kids to exercise

Kids today get less exercise than those of past generations, which

is an impediment to learning and mental health. Health professionals

recommend a minimum of 60 minutes exercise per day for kids of all

ages. Encourage kids to play sport, promote fee and active play and

look for ways to make moving part of their daily lives.

Page 6: Lore ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer adipiscing elit€¦ · ethics class for interested students from Years 5 and 6, with a view to extending this to include Years 3 and 4 later

Page 6

Term 1- Week 8

Focus on being friendly

School are very social places, requiring kids to negotiate many

different social situations each day. Encourage kids to be open and

tolerant; to be friendly; to be involved in plenty of activities and to

be social risk-takers.

Develop self-help skills

Successful students are often well organised, self-directed and

self-motivated. You can foster organisational skills and self-

direction by developing simple, age-appropriate self-help skills

related to their everyday lives. Such skills as making lunches,

packing school bags, and organising after school schedules can be

great lessons that impact on how kids perform at school.

At the start of the school year kids are most likely to adopt

changes than at any other time. Make the most of the opportunity

by focusing on two or three areas and you will find that the rest will

fall into place.

Bullying advice

Schools have a zero tolerance of bullying, but with mobile devices

such as phones and laptops, bullying can follow children past the
