Write your story in about 100 words. Your story must begin with this sentence: “CARLA LOOKED AT THE CAR IN SURPRSE”

Carla looked at the car in surprise. She could not believe her eyes when her father parked the car in front of her house. He promised to buy a nice car for her if she passed her graduation examination. At first she thought that he gave his promise to encourage her to study hard for the examination. Therefore, she did not pay attention to his promise. She spent most of her time reviewing her lessons without thinking about the gift her father intended to give her. The graduation examination passed and she had very good results. She was very happy to think about her future job that she was offered by a big company very far from her city. However, she worried that she did not have enough money to buy a car to drive to work. But now her worry has gone away because her father has kept his promise.

This is the part of a letter you receive from an English friend“I know you often go to cinema. Tell me about the last film you saw and whether you enjoyed it”Now write a letter to your friend (100 words)Hi Jo,Thank you very much for your letter. Although I was very busy with my work, I went to the cinema last weekend. I saw the film entitled "He Plays as Beckham does". It was a very interesting film about a successful Vietnamese footballer. He was interested in football when he was at secondary school. Therefore, he spent most of his time playing football with other boys without thinking about the revision for the coming final examination. His parents did not allow him to play football because they thought that he would fail his examination. However, he tried to persuade his parents to permit him to play football as a professional footballer. His parents agreed with his persuasion and now he has become a famous footballer in a Vleague football team. I liked the film very much because the boy in the film was a good example for us to follow. I recommend this film to you and I hope that you will enjoy the film. Why don't you see the film this weekend?Best wishes,Peter

When we arrived there we drank a lot of beer to celebrate the first part of our trip. We were very tired because we had been riding a long way; but, we were very happy with the exciting scenes on the beach. Then we started riding our motorcycles to the top of Hai Van Pass where we took a lot of photographs, looking down on the green valleys. Finally, we stopped at a local festival in Ninh Thuan. In the festival, we participated in some interesting activities and we ate a lot of local strange dishes made by the Champa people.Although the trip was long and tiring, we experienced many exciting things that we will never forget in our lives.

Your teacher has asked you to write a storyYour story must begin with this sentences: “ It was a fantastic party”

2. It was a fantastic party. At this party I met a lot of my old friends. We were very happy after a long time of separation. We drank and talked to each other happily. Some of my friends sang and danced with loud music from a DVD player. I thought the party would not have an end. All of us enjoyed the party until the host’s parents appeared. They looked very angry to see the mess of the party and they started to cry. One by one, we left the party quietly without having enough time to say goodbye to the host and to say sorry to his parents. Accidents can happen at any time even at a party, but all the guests of the party will never forget it.

This is part of a letter you receive from an English friend:“I want to find out about music in your country. Are there many live concerts? What music do you like listening to?”Now write a letter, answering your friend’s questions. (100 words)

3. Dear Jo,I am writing this letter to tell you about music in my country. There are many different kinds of music including royal music, folk music and pop music. Each kind of music has its own characteristics. Royal music used to be played for the Kings and the royal families but now it is played to serve domestic and foreign tourists. Pop music is the music for nearly all the people; therefore, it is usually played in the theaters. If you like live concerts, you can enjoy them in the theaters or even in the streets on special occasions. I like listening to folk music because it is soft and usually performed by professional musicians. Whenever you visit my home-town, I will invite you to a live concert.Best wishes.

This is part of a letter you receive from your pen friend“I’m glad you like learning English. Your teacher sounds really nice – and your friends to too! Tell me all about your English classes”2. Dear Peter,I am writing this letter to tell you about my English teacher and my English classes. I am very interested in learning English because it is useful for my future job. My teacher comes from Australia. His name is Peter. He has worked as a volunteer teacher in Vietnam since 2009. In his late thirties, he is tall and handsome. He has a deep love for his students and a good method of teaching English. There are 30 students in my English class. They come from different provinces in Central Vietnam. Although they are not very good at English, they study very hard. They always participate in all the class activities and share ideas with the teacher. I love my English teacher and classes because they bring me respect and success.

I began to go out and make friends with some neighbors. They were friendly and helpful. I also spent my free time travelling to other places, enjoying better weather. When I visited village in the south of Cambodia I realized that how the local people lived in bad conditions. The children had to work at their early ages to earn some additional money to help their parents. At this moment, I wished to help such unlucky children. I planned to form a charity fund for the children after my trip.

Dear Sir or Madam

I am writing on behalf of Mr and Mrs Stanton who will stay in your hotel during their trip. Your hotel, Hotel Bella Vistal, has been recommended to me by Mr Charles Brown, your regular guest, who has told me quite a lot about the hotel.

I wish to reserve a double room for 7 nights from 16 th November. I would like to have a quiet room with a bathroom and a good sea view. Would you please inform me the cost of the room and let me know if the breakfast is included?

Mr and Mrs Stanton are Australians and vegetarians. Please confirm that you can provide English-speaking tour guides and suitable meals for them.

I would also like you to confirm the arrangement in writing as soon as possible.

I look forward to receiving your reply.

Yours faithfully

People inhabit different parts of the world and lead different types of lives. Their lifestyles change across the various regions on Earth and so do their mentalities. The resources available in their regions, the plant and animal life that is native to their area have a direct impact of their way of living. People all over the world have been divided into two distinct groups by this marked line of difference between an urban and a rural life. Those inhabiting urban areas lead an urban life while inhabitants of rural parts of the world experience a rural living. What is the difference between a rural and an urban living? What are the pros and cons of the two different ways of life? Let us see.

Urban Living

Urban areas are equipped with all the modern amenities. The modern-day facilities like the Internet, telephone, television and satellite communication facilities are widely available in the urban areas. A majority of the households of the urban areas are blessed with this technological advancement. The newly developing shopping complexes, theaters, food malls and restaurants are a commonplace in urban cities. Huge constructions, large housing complexes, skyscrapers are found in most of the urban metropolitan cities. Elevators, escalators, leveled parking areas and towering constructions add to the magnificence of the urban cities.Due to a greater availability of all the modern facilities along with an increase in the number of educational facilities and career opportunities, people of the urban areas lead an economically more stable and a luxurious life.

The increasing attraction of the people towards the urban parts of the world has resulted in crowding of urban areas. The increasing population, majority of which prefers settling in urban cities, has led to an imbalance in the density of human population. Excessive industrialization has invited environmental problems like pollution.

14

Page 15: Luyen Thi B1 Bai Giai

Luyen thi B1 nam 2011, Nguyen Van Tuan, MA.

However, the rise in economic growth that has resulted in self-sufficiency in the common masses has resulted in a self-centered nature of society. While technological advancement has brought the world closer, human beings have gone far apart from each other. Buildings that touch the skies have built walls between people. The rise in prosperity has been eclipsed by the decline in peace.

Rural Living

Rural areas are not crowded with concrete constructions all over. Houses are rather widely spaced with ample room for fields and gardens. Rural areas are some of the only areas fortunate enough to house the greens. People in rural areas live in close proximity of nature. Apart from people, there is room for pets and grazing animals that help maintain equilibrium in nature.

Due to a relatively lesser number of people inhabiting the rural areas, the rural parts are not overcrowded by people. These areas are blessed to have least amounts of pollution. Due to afforestation and ample space for plantations, rural areas have managed to maintain an environmental balance. Pollution is less, also on account of very less number of industries in rural areas.

The stress that results from a fast life in the urban areas is not a part of the peaceful and relatively slow paced life of the rural regions. The life may not be as lavishly led as that in the urban areas, but the people there are generous and their hearts have room for emotions. Rural are the ones where humanity is still alive.

Every coin has two sides to it. While the rural living is deprived of luxury and technology, it is rich in terms of its relationship with 'nature'. The urban life is update in terms of technology and career prospects. However, the falling humane qualities and a disrupted environmental balance shadow the bright future of urban living. Many families and individuals find themselves, at least at some point, questioning the advantages of rural versus urban life. Quality of life is one of the central issues to consider in any comparison between rural versus urban living. While a case can be made for either location as being the best place to live, it is worthwhile to consider how these two options, rural versus urban, are similar and different. Important factors such as the capacity to make general choices, diversity, health, and employment concerns all influence both sides of the comparison and although each both rural and urban living offer great benefits, they both have a seemingly equal number of drawbacks. Rural and urban areas are generally similar in terms of terms of human interaction but differ most widely when diversity and choice are issues.

There are a number of positive as well as negative factors that contribute the overall quality of life in urban centers and if there is any general statement to be made about urban living, it is that there is a great deal of diversity and choice. In urban areas, there are many more choices people can make about a number of aspects of their daily lives. For instance, in urban areas, one is more likely to be able to find many different types of food and this could lead to overall greater health since there could be a greater diversity in diet. In addition, those in urban areas enjoy the opportunity to take in any number of cultural or social events as they have a large list to choose from. As a result they have the opportunity to be more cultured and are more likely to encounter those from other class, cultural, and ethnic groups.

Parents have a number of choices available for the education of their children and can often select from a long list of both public and private school districts, which leads to the potential for better education. It is also worth noting that urban areas offer residents the possibility to choose from a range of employment options at any number of companies or organizations. Aside form this, urbanites have better access to choices in healthcare as well and if they suffer from diseases they have a number of specialists to choose from in their area. According to one study conducted in Canada, “rural populations show poorer health than their urban counterparts, both in terms of general health indicators (i.e. standardized mortality, life expectancy at birth, infant mortality) and in terms of factors such as motor vehicle accidents and being overweight” (Pampalon 421). This could be the result of less reliance on vehicles in urban areas as well as greater emphasis on walking. Despite the conclusions from this study, however, there are a number of drawbacks to urban living as well. Although the life expectancy in cities may be higher, pollution (noise and atmospheric) is an issue that could impact the overall quality of life. In addition to this, overpopulation concerns can also contribute to a decrease in the standard of living.

Rural places do not offer the same level of choice and in very isolated areas and one might be forced to commute long distances to find even a remote selection of the diversity found in urban centers. Still, despite this lack of choice, there are a number of positive sides to rural living in terms of quality of life. For instance, living in a rural area allows residents to enjoy the natural world more easily instead of having to go to parks. In addition, people do not have to fight with the daily stresses of urban life such as being stuck in traffic, dealing with higher rates of crime, and in many cases, paying higher taxes. These absences of stressors can have a great effect on the overall quality of life and as one researcher notes, “People living in rural and sparsely

populated areas are less likely to have mental health problems than those living in urban areas and may also be less likely to relapse into depression or mental illness once they have recovered from these in more densely populated areas”

The lack of daily stress found in cities from external factors (traffic, long lines, feeling caged, etc) has much to do with this.  While there may not be a large number of stores and restaurants to choose from, those in rural areas have the benefit of land upon which to grow their own food, which is much healthier. Although urban populations have large numbers of social networks and networking opportunities, rural communities offer residents the ability to have long-lasting and more personal relationships since they encounter the same people more frequently. While there are not as many schools to choose from and sometimes rural schools are not funded as well as some others, children can grow up knowing their classmates and experience the benefits of smaller classrooms.

One of the drawbacks to living in a rural area, however, is that unlike urban areas, residents do not have the best opportunity to choose from a range of employment options. While they can commute to larger towns, this gets expensive and is not as convenient as working close to their residence. In general, if there is any statement to be made about the quality of life of rural living, it is that there is a greater ability to connect with people and the landscape. The quality of life in urban areas is similar to that in rural areas in that both involve a high degree of socialization, even if on a cursory level. Where they differ most noticeably is in the availability of choices and diversity, especially when vital factors (healthcare, education, and employment options) are concerned.Nowadays, when the technology and industry are well developed, more and more people decide to move to cities and towns. They are aware of fact that such removal is connected with many good and bad consequences. Let us consider advantages and disadvantages of living in a town.To start with, city provides you with a lot of facilities, which are close at your hand. Thanks to widely developed public transport people can easily get to their work place, schools, hospitals and shopping centres, which are almost everywhere. Consequently, living in a city makes your life easier and more comfortable. Moreover, big cities are believed to gives more possibilities to get a well-paid job. For that reason, people are able to change their work place quite frequently and look for better vacancy. In addition, towns always vibrant with life. As a result, there are a lot of places, where you can spend time in an interesting way - having fun in pubs and clubs or visiting theatres or art galleries. However, people, who live in big cities tend to lead very hectic lifestyle. They are always in rush and they do not have enough time for themselves and for developing their hobbies, because they focus on their careers. Secondly, towns are very crowded and as a

result people cannot stand its hustle and bustle. They are fed up with the constant noise and traffic congestion. Additionally build-up area is rather polluted and people can suffer from lack of fresh air. Besides this, people, who live in cities have to live in tiny flats, consequently they do not have enough space and privacy. They also complain about not living close to nature.

Taking everything into account, living in a city has both advantages and disadvantages. Despite many drawbacks like noise, pollution and lack of space, a lot of people still believe that removal to bigger town is their chance to improve their living conditions.

Urbanization greatly increasing these days results in the rising number of people in cities. Some people think that living in a city provides them with better conditions and good environment to develop their career; however, others argue that pollution, traffic jam and rush life in city can considerable harmful for their health. Both views have its own validity.

On the one hand, it cannot be denied that city’s life brings people a lot of advantages. First of all, cities are served with a wide range of services and better quality to compare with people in rural and remote areas. They can easily send their children to educational institutions, go to the big hospital as well as enjoy may entertained services when demanding. Moreover, because of the high competitiveness, the quality of these services is good enough to meet the customer’s requirement. In contrast, it is quite hard for people in other areas to experience these services with the same quality. Another advantage is that cities have a better opportunity to develop their career. Due to the fact that city is the political and economic center, people who lives in city can find and choose their suitable job and accumulate experiences from their well – educated colleagues. Therefore, they obviously have better chance to success than their peers who lives in countryside.

On the other hand, some disadvantages can be seen in city. The first one is traffic jam, which cities have to suffer from it everyday. According to statistics, it is considered one of the most serious problems that cost a lot of money. Besides, environment pollution also endangers people’s health. As a result of industrialization, many factories and industrial centers are build, discharging polluted fuel and garbage causing the air and water pollution. Finally, rush life in city is demonstrated to cause some serious diseases such as stress. People in city who are always busy from morning to night to compete to survive in competitive city environment do not seem to be in time for leisure activities, that is the original reason for developing stress.

In conclusion, living in city has advantages and disadvantages. To choose living there or not depends on characteristics of each person. In my point of view, I prefer living in a city at present when I am young to obtain a good career, but I will leave to countryside to breathe fresh air in my old age.
