AnorthiteAnorthite Anorthite [Ca(Al2Si2O8)] Structure TriclinicSpace Group : P-1 (No. 2) a=8.1730 Å b=12.8690 Å c=14.165 Åα=93.113, β=115.913, γ=91.261 Z=8
Mineral ChemistryPure anorthite is a type of feldspar. The triclinic crystal structure comprise a frameworkof linked (Si,Al)-O tetrahedra, with intersticesoccupied by calcium or sodium ions.
In pure anorthite, AlO4 and SiO4 tetrahedra alternateregularly forming a fully ordered structure, andcalciums are located within an irregular cavitybounded by about 10 oxygens. Partial replacementof calcium (2+) by sodium (1+) in anorthite requiresequivalent replacement of aluminium (3+) bysilicon (4+) - regular alternation of aluminiums andsilicons is no longer possible.
Calcium ions as large grey spheres. The aluminosilicate framework is shown with oxygens red, silicons ochre, and aluminium ions yellow spheres.

GrossulariteGrossularite ((GarnetGarnet) )
Mineral ChemistryThe term garnet describes a group of minerals forwhich the general chemical formula is: R2+
3R3+2(SiO4)3. The divalent ions, R2+, may be
Ca, Mg, Fe or Mn; the trivalent ions, R3+, may be Al, Fe, or Cr.
The structure of garnet minerals consists of silicons tetrahedrally coordinated by oxygen. These SiO4 groups link to trivalent ion octahedrato form a framework. Within this framework, divalent ions occupy interstitial sites and arecoordinated by eight oxygens.
Calcium ions are large green spheres. The aluminium-silicon-oxygenframework is shown with small grey, ochre and red spheres respectively.
