Production companyA production company essentially helps to create the film- it assists in the budgeting, scheduling, scripting, casting and more. The company usually looks over the film from when it’s just an idea to the completion. They are responsible for finding a director and the majority of acting talent required. However, they are also responsible if anything were to go wrong on the filming, for example an actor being injured or property being damaged. An Independent production company is a company such as Archers Mark. Independent film companies have less money than major film companies as they are not as well known as major companies which therefore big films will not hire them.

Independent films are films that are made outside of major studios like 20th Century Fox and Warner Brothers. Some independent films are only shown in a select number of theatres. Many people believe that independent films are more creative and quirky than major films because they are not mass- marketed so they are not made for a specific audience. Also, independent films have a much smaller production budget than films from a major studio. On the other hand major film production companies are companies that own a lot of money which therefore have more money to spend on things such as actors and settings. Some major UK film production companies are on this websitehttp://www.televisual.com/blog-detail/The-UKs-top-40-film-production-companies_bid-356.html

Production company logoThis is my production company logo I have created for my film opening. I have chosen to use the screaming face silhouette as it relates to my film genre. The name "scream team" is very catching and memorable which is why I have chosen to use it. The screaming face resembles peoples reaction to the type of film my production company will make (which is mainly horror.) I have used a shadow font to make the title look more effective. Also I have chosen to have the production name in red as it resembles blood which is a typical convention of horror films.  Also I have used only one picture on the logo as other major film company logos have only used one image so it doesn't look overcrowded and not memorable. I will add this logo into my film opening to show the target audience who has made the film and I will most likely have it shown at the start of my opening as this is typically what happens in other film openings. Below i have given examples of other film companies. I have taken their idea of using a black background as it stands out more than the other company logos. I have used the typical dark background like the companies below so that the text and image stands out. Also i have taken their idea of using a short and snappy title for my production logo so it is memorable.

Film distributionA film distributor is a company or individual responsible for the marketing of a film. The distributor may set the release date of a film and the method by which a film is to be exhibited or made available for viewing. A distributor may do this directly, if the distributor owns the theaters or film distribution networks, or through theatrical exhibitors and other sub-distributors. A limited distributor may deal only with particular products, such as DVDs or Blu-ray, or may act in a particular country or market. The standard release routine for a movie is regulated by a business model called "release windows". The release windows system was first conceived in the early '80s, on the brink of the home entertainment market, as a strategy to keep different instances of a movie from competing with each other,[allowing the movie to take advantage of different markets (cinema, home video, TV, etc.) at different times. In the standard drill, a movie is first released through movie theatres (theatrical window), then, after approximately 16 and a half weeks, it is released to DVD (entering its video window). After an additional number of months it is released to Pay TV and VOD services and approximately two years after its theatrical release date, it is made available for free-to-air TV.

Momentum pictures The film distribution company that I would use for

my film would be Momentum Pictures. Momentum Pictures (also known as Alliance Films UK and formerly Alliance Communications UK and Alliance Atlantis UK) is one of the leading independent motion picture distributors in the UK and Ireland. It releases approximately 20 theatrical films a year, with several dtv releases. Momentum pictures is a well known film distribution company around the world. They are well known for making horror movies. Recently that have made a film named “Sinister” which is in the genre. It has been quoted by famous critics that it is one of the best horror movies to ever be filmed. This is one of the main reasons I would pick this company as they have previously created famous horror movies. A lot of their horror films they have previously distributed have made a lot of money which is another reason why they would be a good company to distribute my film. Some of the films that they have distributed in the same genre as my film are, Sinister, The Woman in Black, House at the End of the Street and Grindhouse. I have chosen to use a major film company as they are well known and can get the film to be known world wide.

FundingAll films are funded by different ways. My film will be funded by the BFI. The BFI was founded in 1933. They are a charity governed by a Royal Charter. They combine cultural, creative and industrial roles, bringing together the BFI National Archive and BFI Reuben Library, film distribution, exhibition at BFI Southbank and BFI IMAX, publishing and festivals. They award Lottery funding to film production, distribution, education, audience development and market intelligence and research. They support filmmakers in the UK who are emerging or world-class and are capable of creating distinctive and entertaining work. They have £15 million a year to invest across the development, production and completion of feature films. Being supported by the BFI means more than just being given funding. It means that your project can be assisted at every step of the journey by their team, who can offer advice and practical help with many aspects of developing and producing your film. They welcome applications for all kinds of film - from commercial mainstream to experimental, from genre movies to personal stories, from documentaries to animation to live-action fiction.

Film TitlesI have added in titles to my film opening as it is a typical generic convention of any genre film. No matter what genre the film is you will definitely see titles in the film opening. Film titles are there to inform the audience about who was involved in the production and distribution stages of that film. I have presented the titles in my film opening by using a black background with red and white writing over the top. I did this because it looks more professional than “swirly” font writing. Also I didn’t use eye catching fonts because it wouldn’t fit in with my genre. I used a more creative font for the actual title of my film as it is the main title in my film opening. I learnt that certain fonts don’t fit in with the horror genre by looking at previous horror movies and copying what types of fonts they have used.

A title from my film.

Influential filmsThere have been many different films that have influenced in the production of my horror films. I watched a range of horror movies before creating my opening sequence to see what could give me ideas when creating my film. One of the main films that played a major role in influencing my film is ‘Orphan.’ I have used their idea of using a young girl but changing the fact she will be the victim in my film not the villain. Using a young girl immediately grabs your attention because it is unusual to see someone young in a horror movie. I have also taken their costume ideas. I have dressed my victim in similar clothes the girl in Orphan would wear at night time. My film has also had influence from the film House of Wax. I have used their idea of using a stereotypical “dumb blonde” to be the victim. I have done this because the audience will known in advance that because she is the stereotypical “dumb blonde” that she will die and therefore can look away if they are squeamish.
