Business & Industry in Anoka County

A noka County sits on the banks of the beautiful Mississippi River. Close to the core cities, the county offers incredibly affordable real estate.Taxes are low and business incentives are

high. There are booming businesses while still maintaining beautiful

woodlands and vast open acres with parks, lakes and creeks.

    Business and Industry

The areas first industry was logging. After building a dam on the Rum River in 1853, pioneers established sawmills, flour mills and factories. Today, approximately 15,000 acres of rich peat soil produce a wide variety of vegetables and more sod than any other county in the nation. The products are sold throughout the U.S. and Canada, with an estimated value of $30 million per year for the areas economy. However, the single biggest contributor to Anoka Countys economy is manufacturing.

Some of the largest employers in the MetroNorth area include Anoka-Hennepin Independent School District #11, Medtronic,

Inc., Pentair, Onan Corporation, Anoka County and Mercy/Unity Medical Centers.

Small business owners and fledgling companies find Anoka County a friendly place to start or expand a business. The Central Minnesota Development Company (CMDC) has been helping companies succeed in the area for many years. The CMDCs mission is to develop new high-tech enterprises. Anoka County United promotes the economic viability of the area by cultivating an environment that allows small businesses to prosper.

    HealthcareMercy Hospital, Coon Rapids

Ranked as the healthiest state in America as stated in the 16th Edition of the Health Care State Ranking by CQ Press, the county of Anoka offers two hospitals with full service emergency services and special health care programs.

Mercy HospitalMercy Hospital, located in Coon Rapids, is a 271-bed non-profit hospital that serves the northern Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. The hospital responds to a wide range of health needs with specialty services including behavioral health services, cancer care, heart and vascular services, orthopedics, neurosciences, and womens and childrens services.

In 1963, the Anoka Community Hospital Association agreed to build a 100-bed hospital located on the border of Coon Rapids and Anoka. Later that year, 2000 volunteers launched a $600,000 fund drive, collecting

donations door-to-door for the hospitals construction. Their efforts were successful and today Mercy Hospital serves the health care needs of residents living in more than 25 north metro cities and towns, including Maple Grove, Osseo, Anoka, Coon Rapids, Elk River and Rogers, just to name a few.

Mercy Hospital will have a new addition to their hospital in November of 2013. The new 120,000 square-foot, four-story medical office building will be located across the street from the hospital and will be conveniently connected by a skyway over Coon Rapids Boulevard. The building will house Virginia Piper Cancer

Institute-Mercy Hospital, specialty care, outpatient surgery services and obstetrics/womens care. Features will include a patient drop-off entrance, ample parking, hands-free entrances, extra-wide corridors, elevators and suite entrances. Plans for the construction support the latest medical technology and incorporate environmentally friendly materials and systems.

Unity HospitalUnity Hospital is located in Fridley and is one of the north metros premier community hospitals, offering leading technology, equipment, procedures, modern facilities, highly skilled

professionals and a sense of community that drives the care delivered each day. Unity Hospital is dedicated to providing quality, cost-effective health care to more than 225,000 households in more than 23 neighboring communities in the northern metro.

Since 1966, Unity Hospital has been improving the health of people in the northwestern Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area. The hospitals top technology and outstanding care continues to serve the residents of its founding communities (Blaine, Fridley, Hilltop, Mounds View and Spring Lake Park) while welcoming new residents from more than 20 additional communities, including the rapidly growing cities of Ham Lake and Lino Lakes.

Unitys care is noted as exceptional by national health care rating groups. Employees and patients often mention the family feel of Unity.

Awards, Accreditations and CertificationsThomson Reuters Healthcare rated Mercy Hospital one of the nations 100 top cardiovascular hospitals 7 years in a row. This award measures performance on key criteria at the nations top performing acute care hospitals.

Mercy and Unity Hospitals Cancer Centers are among 82 nationally recognized for exceeding standard care. Mercy hospital is also a Minnesota-designated Level 3 Trauma Center.
