Just across the road is the magni�cent Hotel Palazzo built in the �rst half of the 1800s.GIOVANNI FATTORI MUSEUMThe museum is located in Villa Mimbelli, a 19th century residence, that now houses works of art by painters from Livorno and Tuscany including large paintings by Giovanni Fattori and other Macchiaioli as well as leading exponents of the post-Macchiaioli and Divisionisti.LIVORNO ACQUARIUMThis is the largest aquarium in Tuscany. Here you can explore various ecosystems, art and science.THE NAVAL ACADEMYThis military university was inaugurated in 1881, it is the Academy for Italian Navy o�cers and provides a high level of technical training. The impressive complex is located on the sea front in Viale Italia.ARDENZAThis is a residential area with bathing establishments on the seafront. The Casini d’Ardenza parade of houses and historic Baracchina Rossa bar are amongst the most elegant buildings in Livorno.MONTENEROThis sanctuary, built in the 17th century, is famous the world over. It is dedicated to the Madonna delle Grazie and has a wealth of interesting ex-voto, dedicated by people giving thanks for the Madonna's intercession. Visitors can enjoy a pleasant ride on the funicular that leaves from Piazza delle Carrozze up to Piazza di Monten-ero to take in the wonderful view of the city and coastline.
BUS ITINERARY Continuing along the seafront you reach the Antignano district with lovely houses in liberty style. The coast road continues to Quercianella and Castiglioncello past the Romito cli�s that a�ords some of the most beautiful sea views in Italy.

PIAZZA GRANDEVIA GRANDEThis is the main city street and dates back to the 16th century. It is the heart of the city and is full of �ne shops.PIAZZA COLONNELLAThis square frames the statues of sea monsters. The pair of statues were built after the second world war from a 1629 design by Pietro Tacca, the originals are in piazza S.S Annun-ziata a Firenze.THE FOUR MOORS STATUEThis is another statute by Pietro Tacca dedicated to Ferdi-nando I de’ Medici. At its base there are four chained moors who symbolise victory against pirates.THE MEDICI BASTIONSThere are many bastions around the city that were placed at intervals around city’s pentagon shaped walls. The plan was made by Buontalenti for the Medici.THE OLD FORTRESSThe Medici had this fortress built in 1521 to defend the port. It is one of Livorno’s symbols and the tower inside dates back to 1077.VIA SAN GIOVANNIIt connects the city centre to the port. On one side we can see the Palazzo del Portuale, the seat of the "LEM-Livorno Euro Mediterranea" foundation.PIAZZA DEL MUNICIPIOThis is the town square, �anked on one side by the City Hall between the old customs house (now the Chamber of Commerce) and the Grand duchy Palace that today houses the Provincial government.VIA DELLA VENEZIAThis is one the oldest city streets and runs through the Venezia district it is intersected at various points by charac-teristic canals.SCALI ROSCIANOAlong this road, which runs alongside one of the city’s canals, rises the Palazzo Rosciano. It was built in 1672 for a leading trader from Liguria, Giuseppe di Pietro Rossano, and is now occupied by the Livorno Port Authority. PIAZZA DEI DOMENICANIThis square is home to the Church S. Caterina da Siena designed by the architect Giovanni del Fantasia, it was built between 1720 and 1753. The baroque church with its tall cupola is one of the landmarks of the historic “Venezia” district. On its �anks you can still see the remains of the old San Pietro fort.

PIAZZA GRANDE Three of the city’s most important buildings can be found in this central square: the Duomo, Palazzo Grande and behind these the City Hall. The square’s beauty and harmonious ensemble was an inspiration to Inigo Jones, the father of English renaissance architecture, when he designed London’s Covent Garden.VIA CAIROLIThis road leads from Piazza Grande to Piazza Cavour, and contains several banks, the imposing post o�ce build-ing and Palazzo della Galleria. PIAZZA CAVOURIt was designed by Luigi De Cambray Digny in 1828. It is located on the Fosso Reale, [Royal Canal] half way between Piazza Grande and Piazza Attias to which it is connected by the bustling roads of Via Ricasoli and Via Cairoli.VIA RICASOLIIt is Livorno’s catwalk with its fashionable shops contain-ing leading Italian brands and is the favourite street for Livorno’s young window shoppers.PIAZZA ATTIASIt was built as recently as the end of the 20th century. It is one of the favourite meeting places for Livorno’s youngsters. There are large department stores and shops around the square.PIAZZA DELLA VITTORIAKnown to locals as Piazza Magenta, in its centre you can see the Church “Santa Maria del Soccorso” which dates to 1924, and connects Piazza Attias to Via Magenta.VIA GOLDONIYou can reach Via Goldoni from Piazza Attias or Corso Amedeo. Halfway down the road is the beautiful Teatro Goldoni that is the city’s cultural centre.
PIAZZA GRANDE In the direction of Piazza della Repubblica, walking along Via degli Avvalorati and the canal that skirts the New Fortress a short way down is Via della Madonna, a pedestrian area with boutiques, restaurants , craft shops and the market. VIA DELLA MADONNA It gets its name from the Church of the Madonna built in 1607 by the architect Alessandro Pieroni. A short distance away is the Greci Uniti church and the remains of the Armenian Church. This is a pedestrian area with boutiques, restaurants , shops and the central market.PIAZZA CAVALLOTTIIt is home to the bustling market with specialist stores and fruit and vegetable stalls. This is a charming, colourful market and one of the most characteristic in the city.VIA BUONTALENTIThe covered Mercato delle Vettovaglie, a large liberty style building, designed by Angiolo Badaloni, was �rst opened to the public in 1894. In front of the market are numerous stalls with clothes and household products.PIAZZA DELLA REPUBBLICAWalking along Scali Bettarini, at the back of Mercato delle Vettovaglie, we reach Piazza della Repubblica, built in 1847 by the architect Bettarini. Il is called the “Voltone” (large vault) and covers the Fosso Reale for over 200 metres. At the end on the right are Piazza and Via Garibaldi.PIAZZA E VIA GARIBALDIPiazza Garibaldi is home to a charming little clothes market that includes stalls with di�erent products and is skirted by a number of shops. The New Fortress provides a scenic backdrop to this square.PIAZZA DEL LOGO PIOGoing back along via degli Avvalorati we return to Piazza del Municipio. Taking Via del Porticciolo and Via della Venezia we reach Piazza del Logo Pio. Here there is the Chiesa dell’Assunzione della Vergine di San Giuseppe built in 1716, designed by Giovanni del Fantasia. On one side of the square is Viale Caprera with a newly restored canal and typical trattorie.BOTTINI DELL’OLIOIt is one of the most characteristic buildings of the “Venezia” district, built in 1698. The constructions were originally used as oil warehouses and have now been converted for cultural shows and exhibitions. AMERICAN MARKETReturning to the port, to the front of the Stazione Marit-tima terminal is the historical market that was set up after the second world war to sell sought after military and imported goods.FISH MARKETOn Saturday mornings this characteristic market is used for the sale of organic and non-organic products from the countryside around Livorno.
VIA BORRAIt was built at the beginning of the 1700s and was lined with the most beautiful period buildings in the heart of “Venezia”. Via Borra is named after the Governor Alessandro Dal Borro.PALAZZO HUIGENS Built in the 18th century by Edoardo Brassart, for Antonio Huigens. Important guests include 1706 the Grand duke Cosimo III de’ Medici in 1706 and in 1709 King Frederic 4th of Denmark. PALAZZO DELLE COLONNE DI MARMOThis building, with its impressive marble façade, was built at the beginning of the 1700s. It was designed by Giovan Battista Foggini, one of the leading architect of his times.SCALI DEL PONTINOThis is a busy district lying between “Venezia” and Piazza della Repubblica that contains numerous old small warehouses that have been converted into stores and craft workshops. FORTEZZA NUOVAThis fortress dates back to 1591, when the architect Buon-talenti was commissioned by the Grand Duke to design a new urban plan for the city of Livorno.PIETRO MASCAGNI MUSIC CONSERVATORYIt was founded in 1953 and since 1978 has acquired status as an o�cial State conservatory. It is a higher education institution for artistic and musical disciplines. It is housed in Palazzo della Gherardesca that was built between 1845 and 1861 following the designs of Alessandro Gherardesca.THE CISTERNONEAlso known as the Gran Conserva, it is a monumental cistern built in 1842, in neoclassical style, by the architect Pasquale Poccianti and supplies Livorno with its water.

BY CARFrom the south on the A12 Genova-Livorno-Rosignano motorway take the “Livorno”, exit. If coming from the north on the A11-A12 Firenze-Pisa-Livorno motorways (both connected to the A1 and the Brennero via the A1) again take the "Livorno" exit. Then take the S1 road and follow directions for “Porto di Livorno” or “Imbarchi”. The port of Livorno is connected to the Firenze-Pisa-Livorno highway.BY TRAINFrom Livorno Centrale station take a bus as far as Piazza Grande; from here it is about a 10 minute walk to the Cruise and Stazione Marittima passenger terminals. There is a shuttle service from the Infopoint in Piazza Grande. There are also taxis from the station to Piazza Grande.BY PLANEThe nearest airport is “Galileo Galilei” International in Pisa (18 km from the port of Livorno). From here it is possible to reach Livorno by taxi, rent-a-car or by train from Pisa station to Livorno Centrale station. The “Amerigo Vespucci” international airport in Florence is 80 km away. This airport has rail connections to Florence's central Santa Maria Novella railway station and from which visitors can catch direct trains to Livorno Centrale.
