    ÇRÉ GADÄDHARA AND ÇRÉ NITYÄNANDA

posted by New Çré Haridäs Niväs, Spain

…After having the darçan of Lord Jagannätha, Nityä-nanda and his associates joyfully went to see Gadä-dhara. Who has the power to describe the love that Nityänanda and Gadädhara felt in Their hearts?

At Gadädhara’s home there was a very enchanting Deity of Lord Gopénätha, Who was directly Nanda-Kumära. Lord Caitanya had personally embraced Him. On seeing that Deity, the blasphemers forgot their wrong ideas.

And Nityänanda, seeing the threefold-bending Gopé-nätha holding a flute to His mouth, shed tears of joy which had no limit.

On learning that Nityänanda had come, Gadädha-ra stopped reading Çrémad-Bhägavatam and imme-diately went to see him. They gazed at each other’s beautiful faces, and embracing each other’s necks, both of them wept.

After offering namaskär to each other, they sang each other’s glories. They both said,”Now my eyes are purified” and “Now My life has become successful.” External consciousness was no longer present in the bodies of the two Lords who were floating in an ocean of bhakti-änanda.

On seeing this display of prema-bhakti, the devotees in the four directions fell to the ground overcome by great happiness.

How wonderful was the préti between Nityänanda and Gadädhara! They would not speak about any-thing disliked by the other. Also, Gadädhara Paëòit took a vow of not looking at the face of anyone who criticized Nityänanda or who had no love for Nityänanda’s svarüpa. Then the two Lords calmed somehow and sat down to sing the auspicious glories of Lord Caitanya. After that, Gadädhara requested that Nityänanda take his meal there.

Nityänanda had (actually) come there to accept a meal from Gadädhara, bringing from West Bengal fine white rice suitable for Lord Gopénätha. He also brought two beautiful red garments, and placed it all before Gadädhara.

Nityänanda said,”Gadädhara, cook this rice and offer it to Lord Gopénätha for His pleasure.” Seeing the rice, Gadädhara Paëòit smiled and said,”With my eyes I have never seen such rice. O Gosäïi, did you bring this rice from Vaikuëöha to give it to Lord Gopénätha? Lakñmé alone should cook this rice. Then Lord Kåñëa will enjoy it, and after Him, the devotees.”

After happily praising the rice, Gadädhara offered the two divine red garments to Lord Gopénätha, placing them on His graceful body. Contemplating Lord’s beauty, he was immersed in bliss.

  • Then, in order to cook, he gathered some wild spi-nach (çäka). Originally there was no çäka there, but by divine arrangement it appeared. He gathered the çäka and began to cook. He also picked some soft leaves from a tamarind tree and placed them in a pot of salted water. Then (apart from rice) he prepared the seasoning called amla.

After the fortunate Gadädhara finished his cooking, he placed the prepared meals in front of Lord Gopé-nätha. At that moment the joyful Lord Caitanya arri-ved, chanting “Hare! Kåñëa! Kåñëa!” with His beau-tiful mouth.

He called out, “Gadädhara! Gadädhara!” At once Gadä-dhara offered obeisances at His feet. Smiling, Lord Caitanya said, “Gadädhara, why did I not get an invi-tation from you? You and I are not quarreling. Even though not invited, I have come anyway. Nityänanda brought the ingredients, you did the cooking, Lord Gopénätha bestowed His mercy, and I will accept My share of the remnants.”

Hearing Lord Caitanya’s merciful words, Nityänan-da and Gadädhara plunged in an ocean of bliss. Ga-dädhara happily brought the prasädam and placed it in front of Lord Caitanya. Its fragrance was spread-ing everywhere. Again and again Lord Caitanya de-votedly bowed down before it.

Lord Caitanya said, “Divide it into three equal parts. Then we will sit down together and honour the prasädam.” Sitting down, Lord Caitanya greatly enjoyed the rice brought by Lord Nityänanda. Seated at His side, the two Lords (also) honoured the prasädam. Lord Cai-tanya happily praised the rice and the seasoning.

He said,”This food is very fragrant. It must be de-votion to Çré Kåñëa personified. It cannot be any other way. Gadädhara! How wonderful is your cook-ing! I have never tasted çäka like this. Gadädhara! How marvellous is your cooking, your vegetable of tamarind leaves! I think you have cooked this in Vaikuëöha. How can you hide this fact from Me?”

Joking and laughing in this way, the three Lords tas-ted the nectar of premä as they were eating. Only the three of them knew their préti, but Lord Caitanya did not reveal it quickly anywhere. After some time the three Lords finished eating and left, after which the devotees took Their remnants.

Anyone who hears or reads about this blissful ho-nouring of prasädam will attain kåñëa-bhakti, obtai-ning thus Çré Kåñëa. Those on whom Gadädhara casts His merciful glance will be able to understand the true nature of Nityänanda, and those who lovingly cherish in their heart the true nature of Nityänanda will know Gadädhara.
