Forward/はじめに

The Annual Report of the Thailand Advanced Institute of Science and Technology and

Tokyo Institute of Technology (TAIST-Tokyo Tech) includes information on events and

activities throughout the 2014 calendar year.

A key feature this year has been the augmentation of a strong and confident TAIST program.

TAIST-Tokyo Tech has taken the opportunity to contribute to human resource development

and progress in education and research while actively seeking more diverse ways to

contribute to the collaboration and cooperation with supporters, especially in the industrial

sector. Correspondingly, TAIST-Tokyo Tech has focused on enhancing human resources to

foster engineers and high-level development researchers. This objective has been achieved

through co-advising by Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Tech) professors, the excellent

research staff of the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA),and

highly experienced faculty at the Thai universities. With this, TAIST-Tokyo Tech has also put

emphasis on working towards sustainable educational, research, and social development in

Asia, and working more closely with supporting companies and organizations so as to

become more active and successful.

This is the first time that an annual report is published, with target audiences being the

supporting members, the TAIST Steering Committee on both the Thai and Tokyo Tech sides,

and related organizations.

As a continuation from preceding years, Newsletter Volume 10 - Annual Report 2014

aims to inform the public about the work and activities of TAIST-Tokyo Tech and serves as a

vehicle for assessing and evaluating the work and activities of the organization throughout the

2014 calendar year. This Newsletter can be accessed from the website of TAIST-Tokyo Tech

at: http://www.nstda.or.th/taist_tokyo_tech and the website of Tokyo Tech at:

Vice President’s Welcome/NSTDA Omjai 副長官よりご挨拶

Reflecting upon TAIST-Tokyo Tech's achievements

over the past year, and its ambitious plans for the future, I am struck

by the many ways in which the National Science and Technology

Development Agency (NSTDA) in collaboration with Tokyo

Institute of Technology (Tokyo Tech) in Japan and four leading Thai

universities, namely King Mongkut's Institute of Technology

Ladkrabang (KMITL), King Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT),

Thammasat University by Sirindhorn International Institute of Technology (SIIT), and

Kasetsart University (KU) contribute to our educational, research, and activity support

mission. As the main objective of TAIST-Tokyo Tech is human resource development to

foster and support world-class researchers and high-level engineers, the TAIST-Tokyo Tech

collegiate contribution to educational, research and activity support is significant and set to

grow.

From my point of view, the single most important foundation stone of sustainable

social development at both national and international levels is the quality of education. Since

2007, NSTDA has put its educational resources, researchers, experts, and professors at the

disposal of TAIST-Tokyo Tech. Our students, professors, and staff benefit from TAIST-Tokyo

Tech’s resources. Program Committee members on both the Thai side and Tokyo Tech side

provide intensive, basic, and advanced courses on a master’s degree level through three

programs― Automotive Engineering (AE), Information and Communication for Embedded

Systems (ICTES), and Advanced and Sustainable Environmental Engineering (EnvE) ― and

In September 2014 TAIST-Tokyo Tech hosted its annual graduation ceremony, attended by

our 30 graduate students of the academic year 2013 and 200 guests including professors,

researchers, alumni, supporters, and graduate students' parents and relatives. Generously

funded by our supporters for the past five years and, vigorously supported by our team, this

program has been phenomenally successful, with a total of 131 graduate students as of

December 2014. Amongst them, 34 students are attending further education in doctoral

programs. Others work in educational and research institutes, universities, governmental

organizations, and in the industrial sector.

Overview /TAIST の概要

1. Introduction and history/歴史

TAIST (Thailand Advanced Institute of Science and Technology) is a concept based

on collaboration between NSTDA, partner universities in Thailand, and a foreign institution

to develop Thai human resources. The plan was to have TAIST serve as a virtual institution

and focal point, while NSTDA would provide researchers to act as adjunct professors and

research projects and scholarships for graduate students. The foreign institution or university

would provide a world-class background, expertise and experience, academic instruction and

research advice. Thai universities would provide an academic frame work, academic staff to

oversee and guide students, and degrees to successful candidates. In 2007 the viability of the

idea was clearly demonstrated by the creation of the first TAIST, entitled Thailand

Advanced Institute of Science and Technology and Tokyo Institute of Technology

(TAIST-Tokyo Tech), with the cooperation of Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Tech),

King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang (KMITL), Sirindhorn International

Institute of Technology (SIIT), King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi

(KMUTT) and Kasetsart University (KU). It was expected that several similar collaborations

would be established in the future.

engineers through a combination of advice from Tokyo Tech professors, excellent facilities

and research staff at NSTDA, and highly experienced faculty and other established resources

at Thai universities. At present, the participating universities are KMITL, SIIT, KMUTT, and

KU. More universities from Japan and Thailand are expected to join in the near future.

TAIST-Tokyo Tech works toward sustainable development in the Asia region through

educational, research, and collaborative academic enhancement. The program provides a

great advantage in promoting human resource development not only for universities and

laboratories, but also for supporting companies and organizations in a competitive business

world.

3. Structure of TAIST-Tokyo Tech/ 構成

TAIST lecture courses are taught by a team consisting of a Tokyo Tech professor as

the main lecturer and Thai professors from four leading universities ― KMITL, SIIT,

KMUTT, and KU ― as co-lecturers who supplement the course and carry out exercises.

Some courses are taught as one-week intensive face-to-face lectures given by Tokyo Tech

professors who travel to Thailand. Other courses are either a combination of face-to-face and

distance lectures or completely delivered from Tokyo Tech’s Ookayama Campus in Tokyo or

Suzukakedai Campus in Yokohama.

11. Impressive Messages from Graduates to TAIST-Tokyo Tech

/修了生のメッセージ

Just to let you know, you have made the perfect choice for studying in TAIST! It is perfectfor everyone who desires more knowledge and experiences. This program can offer you more thanyou can think of. The only thing you have to do is to open your mind and accept the challengesbestowed upon you, whether they come in the forms of professors, researchers, laboratory equipmentor even that conference paper on deadline! Just remind yourself that if you can surpass all that stuff, you will never imagine how proud you can be. And it won’t be just you feeling proud, there will beyour parents, friends, best friends, boyfriend (s), girlfriend (s) and whoever else you can think of.

So now, if you have read this far, you might be bored of this “impressive” message I’m trying to deliver. I just want to say fight hard, and become a “Master” with your degree.

All the best,

Mr. Chayangkun SanguanwatanaFourth AE class, KMITL

It was a great honor to participate in the TAISTScholarship Program. It strengthened my academic background, widened my collaborative network, and broadened my professionalperspectives. Most of all, I am so grateful for the hospitality andkind assistance the professors, the staff, and of course, my goodfriends have provided. Thank you.

Mr. Akkharawoot TakhomICTES, SIIT

Dear TAIST Students,

I’m one of seniors who is about to be graduated. Believe itor not, at this very moment I am still editing my thesis publication, but eventually, I will finish it. What I need you to understand is thatyou need to focus on your final objective when you set foot in theTAIST program. When you can see the goal, you will know how toget there. The most important thing here is time management, whichI am not very good at. But now I am getting better with time. Theonly thing you should know about time is that it will never comeback. Moreover, you should also know that if you can spend yourtime wisely, the outcome of your achievement will be such awonderful thing you will remember it your whole life.

Finally, now I have already graduated. Though I felt misery, the friendship of my friendspushed through our course work and gave solace when a thesis was failed. I saw the talent and well-intentioned support of teachers. I thought, “I’m the first batch. Finding a job with the master degreemay be hard.” I believe that I got a job because of this sentence: “I use English to communicate witha Japanese teacher.” The two years of tests taught me that the trouble makes me stronger. Work willbe valuable and useful if we respect and believe. I would like to thank for everyone for pushing methrough this fun experience. Work will be valuable and useful if we respect and believe. I would liketo thank for everyone for pushing me through this fun experience.

Page 33

Formerly, I was just an undergraduate student who didn’t wantto learn anymore. I didn’t want to study for the master’s degree. However, when TAIST-Tokyo Tech team came to organize a roadshow atmy university, it was the turning point in my life. I applied to theMaster’s degree in Advanced and Sustainable Environmental Engineering(EnvE) at TAIST-Tokyo Tech. TAIST financially supported my studiesfor two years, and I passed. I decided to learn because of that freetuition.

But I didn’t even know the life after these were many stories. On the first day of class, I learned with a Japanese teacher. English wasdifficult, but English from Japanese was more difficult. I felt that I couldnot get through it. We had exams in class, vast open-ended tests that Inever thought I could have done. And I had to do almost everything onmy own to complete my thesis.

The TAIST Tokyo-Tech program has given me many valuablethings, including using of English communication in class, studyingwith professors from reputable institutions both from Japan andThailand, doing research with NSTDA researchers, who arespecialists, especially my advisor, the guru of algae, and receiving aMaster’s Degree in Engineering from the Kasetsart University.

The intensive course led me to be alert and concentrate all thetime. Review lessons after class were needed. The exams were heldas soon as we finished a class. Japanese professors gave us insightinto the thinking and behavior of the Japanese people. Also, I had thebest opportunity to go abroad twice through this program. One wasmy first trip abroad. It was a wonderful time for me.

Finally, I cannot thank enough Associate Professor Dr. WilaiChiemchaisri, Dr. Sorawit Powtongsook, Associate Professor Dr.Thongchai Rohitatisha Srinophakun and TAIST Tokyo-Tech’s staff forgiving me the best time in my master’s degree.

Most importantly, I would like to express my sinceregratitude to my advisor, namely Dr. Chowarit Mitsantisuk, for hisconsistent support of my M.Eng. study research. Thanks for hispatience, motivation, enthusiasm, and immense knowledge.Along with his guidance, the thesis had been conducted anddeveloped with the attention and right knowledge. It is hard toimagine not having a good advisor and mentor for my M.Eng.study as I had.

Besides, I appreciated the encouragement, insightfulcomments, and in-depth questions of my thesis committees: Prof. Yasuharu Koike and Ph.D. Pished Bunnun.

Thanks to my fellow CMIT laboratory of KasetsartUniversity for the stimulating discussions, the sleeplessnights we were working together before deadlines, and forall the wonderful moments we had last year.

Last but not the least, I would like to thank TAISTand NSTDA for awarding me with scholarships to continuemy education to the end.

Born in the countryside to a family of agriculturists, PonlapakPhuhinkong, received a bachelor’s degree in Computer engineeringfrom King Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT)and a master’s degree in Information and Communication Technologyfor Embedded Systems program (ICTES) from Kasetsart University(KU) under the TAIST-Tokyo Tech scholarship. My researchinspirations began in my high school days when informationtechnologies contributed to my life, and I got several awards from aninternational research conference. Until now, I have written about 4international publications on disaster hazards by using information fromsatellites.

In the future, I would like to work in an engineering field withan international company collaborating between Thailand and others, bethe leader of the information and communication technology companieswhich can change the world. Inspirations and ideas obtained from theTAIST-Tokyo Tech scholarship can improve potency of economy andindustry structure in my country for near future. In conclusion, Irecognize that this research would not have been possible without thefinancial assistance of TAIST-Tokyo Tech, Geo-Informatics and SpaceTechnology Development Agency (GISTDA) and Kasetsart University(KU).

A Master’s degree inthis program not only provided me the best courses to get a strong foundation in this field, but also putme into classrooms with a good mix of students of diverse backgrounds from other universities forsharing our different knowledge and ideas. This is what I consider as the ideal for studying and living.

Finally, I felt warmth and very happy when I washerein TAIST-Tokyo Tech.

From this course, I gained a lot of knowledge and experiences inthe automotive research field. The research topic is challenging. After Ifinished this course it made me more confident to work on an automotiveengineer. I’m very happy with this course. Lastly, I would like to thank allthe professors from Tokyo Tech, and my Thailand host university andNSTDA including all staff, and lastly my family that stand by me all thetime.

For the two years I have been a TAIST Tokyo Tech Scholarshipstudent, many things changed me. I was provided with both knowledgeand experiences that I have not got from anywhere before. Japaneseprofessors gave me more than the lessons in books. I harvested theattitudes and perspectives of the environmental aspects which is not thesame as other environment schools in Thailand. All of these help me a lotin my work. Especially, my research skill was improved so much. I’velearned to think systematically in doing the thesis. Finally, I would like toexpress my sincere thanks to my thesis advisor Dr. Paweena Prapainainar, lecturer, Kasetsart University who is not only the advisor but also thementor that taught me everything to be a good person.
