I am pleased to present our readers with this TAIST-Tokyo Tech newsletter. For our new readers, I would like to take the opportunity to briefly introduce TAIST-Tokyo Tech. TAIST -Tokyo Tech is a program under the concept of Thailand Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (TAIST), which was established to foster collaboration among NSTDA and partner universities in Thailand and foreign institutes to develop a graduate program to produce world-class researchers and high-level engineers. TAIST-Tokyo Tech is a cooperation of NSTDA,

Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Tech) and four leading Thai universities - King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang (KMITL), King Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT), Thammasat University by Sirindhorn International Institute of Technology (SIIT), and Kasetsart University (KU).

このニュースレターを皆様にお届けすることができ嬉しく思います。TAIST-Tokyo Tech は，世界で通用する研究者やハイレベルな技術者の育成を目的に設立された国

際大学院です。タイ国立科学技術開発庁（NSTDA），東京工業大学（東工大），4つのタイ一流大学（キングモンクット工科大学ラカバン校（KMITL），キングモン

クット工科大学トンブリ校（KMUTT），タマサート大学シリントーン国際工学部

（SIIT），カセサート大学（KU））が連携して運営しています。

In addition, the phase III collaboration will be continued from 2016 to 2021 and Mahidol University (MU) will join the collaboration for a certificate program in 2018. At present, TAIST-Tokyo Tech offers three master’s degree programs:

• Master’s Degree Program in Automotive Engineering (AE) • Master's Degree Program in Information and Communication Technology with

Embedded Systems (ICTES) • Master's Degree Program in Advanced and Sustainable Environmental Engineering

This past year, the TAIST-Tokyo Tech graduation ceremony was held on 21 July 2016 at Thailand Science Park. We joyfully celebrated the graduation of 51 students from 3 programs. In addition, scholarships and Suyama Challenge awards were presented at this auspicious event. 2016 年 7 月 21 日，タイランドサイエンスパーク（TSP）において TAIST-Tokyo Tech修了式を開催しました。学暦 2015 年度は 3 プログラム計 51 名が修了し，皆で盛大

に修了生の門出を祝しました。式典では，東工大同窓生である須山英三氏のご支援

により初めて実施した，「須山チャレンジプロジェクト」の優勝チームの表彰式も

執り行いました。

At TAIST-Tokyo Tech, we develop various activities for students to participate, in order to enrich their physical health and mind as well as skills in various aspects. These include sports day, visits to industry and government research centers, a student exchange program and internship opportunities. In 2016, we launched a new activity called the Suyama Challenge Project. The Suyama Challenge is an innovation contest in which TAIST students work in teams to propose innovative solutions to real-world problems. You can read about all these activities in details in this newsletter.

TAIST-Tokyo Tech では，スポーツデイ，企業訪問，学生交流プログラム等，様々な

アクティビティを実施しています。前述の須山チャレンジプロジェクトもその一つ

です。このプロジェクトは，現代社会が直面する問題に対し，学生チームが科学技

術を用いて解決を目指すイノベーションコンテストです。これらのアクティビティ

については，本ニュースレターに後述します。

Greetings from the New Director of the Tokyo Tech Thailand Office 大即信明新タイ拠点長よりご挨拶

Specially Appointed Professor Nobuaki Otsuki Director, Tokyo Tech Thailand Office I am serving as Director of the Tokyo Tech Thailand Office at Thailand Science Park as of April 2017. My relationship with Thailand began in 1995 through the JSPS-NRCT project. During my 2011 to 2014 tenure as Principal of Tokyo Tech High School of Science and Technology, I worked closely with counterparts at Kasetsart University Laboratory School to develop academic cooperation between our schools. In recent years, I have served as a lecturer in the TAIST-Tokyo Tech EnvE program. 2017 年 4 月から，タイ拠点長としてタイ国サイエンスパーク内の東京工業大学タイ

オフィスに勤務しております。なお，個人的なタイとの繋がりは，1995 年頃より

JSPS-NRCT（タイ国家学術調査委員会）のプロジェクト，2011-14 年は附属高校校長

としてカセサート大学附属高校との協定，ここ数年は TAIST-Tokyo Tech の EnvE プ

ログラムの講師などです。 Thailand is one of the most important countries for Japan. It plays a central role in ASEAN, and there are a lot of human exchanges between Thailand and Japan. For example, on a yearly basis, approximately 1.5 million Japanese citizens visit Thailand, forming the fourth largest number of visitors after those from China, Malaysia and Korea. In the other direction, approximately 1 million Thai people visit Japan, making them the fifth largest number of visitors after those from Korea, China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. As of May 2016, Tokyo Tech had 121 Thai students, which is the third largest group of international students after those from China and Indonesia. Recognizing the importance of these exchanges between our two countries, it is my great pleasure to support educational programs and research collaborations as Director of the Tokyo Tech Thailand Office. I look forward to working with each of you to further strengthen the valuable ties between Thailand and Japan. タイは我が国にとって大変重要な国です。すなわち，タイは ASEAN の中心国であ

り，日本からタイへは年間約 150 万人（中国，マレーシア，韓国に次ぐ第 4 位），

タイから日本へは約 100 万（韓国，中国，台湾，香港に次ぐ第 5 位）の人的交流が

あります。また，本学にも 121 名（2016 年 5 月現在，中国，インドネシアに次ぐ第

3 位）の留学生がおります。このこともあって，タイ拠点において教育プログラム，

共同研究などをお手伝いできることは遣り甲斐のある仕事であり，嬉しく思ってい

ます。タイおよび日本の皆様のご協力を頂き，頑張っていきたいと存じます。

【For new supporters】Overview of TAIST-Tokyo Tech 【新たに加わられた賛助会員様向け】TAIST-Tokyo Tech 概要 TAIST (Thailand Advanced Institute of Science and Technology) is based on the idea of collaboration among NSTDA and partner universities in Thailand and foreign institution(s) to develop Thai human resources. TAIST serves as a virtual institution and focal point. NSTDA provides researchers to act as adjunct professors, assistance with research projects, and scholarships for graduate students. A foreign institution provides a world class background, expertise and experience, academic instruction and research advice. Thai universities provide an academic frame work, academic staff to oversee and guide students, and degrees for the successful candidates. In 2007 the viability of the idea was nicely demonstrated by the creation of the first TAIST, entitled Thailand Advanced Institute of Science and Technology - Tokyo Institute of Technology (TAIST-Tokyo Tech), with the cooperation of Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Tech), King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang (KMITL), Sirindhorn International Institute of Technology (SIIT), King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT) and Kasetsart University (KU).

“TAIST”は，タイにおける人材育成を目的とする NSTDA，タイの大学，海外組織

の連携という構想に基づいています。NSTDA は，学生の修士論文研究の副指導教員

を務める他，研究プロジェクトや奨学金を提供します。海外組織は，世界に通用す

る基礎知識，専門知識，経験，学術指導および研究に関するアドバイスを学生に提

供します。タイの大学は，学生を指導する優秀なスタッフおよび単位を提供します。

この構想は，2007 年に東工大，KMITL，SIIT，KMUTT，KU の協力により TAIST-Tokyo Tech が誕生したことで実現されました。

The main objective of TAIST-Tokyo Tech is to human resource development to foster and support world-class researchers and high-level engineers. TAIST-Tokyo Tech works toward sustainable development in the Asia region through educational, research and collaborative academic enhancement. The program provides a great advantage in promoting human resource development not only for universities and laboratories but also for supporting companies and organizations in a competitive business world.

TAIST-Tokyo Tech は，世界で通用する研究者やハイレベルな技術者の育成・サポー

トを主な目的としています。教育，研究，学術交流によるアジア圏での持続可能な

発展への貢献を目指しており，大学や研究所だけでなく，賛助会企業や関連機関の

皆様にとっても，人材開発の面で大きな利点があるプログラムです。

TAIST-Tokyo Tech lecture courses are taught by a team of Tokyo Tech professors, as main lecturers, and Thai professors from KMITL, SIIT, KMUTT and KU, as co-lecturers who supplement the course and carry out exercises. Some courses are taught as weeklong intensive face-to-face lectures given by Tokyo Tech professors who travel to Thailand. Other courses are either a combination of face-to-face and remote lectures or are completely delivered remotely from Tokyo Tech’s Ookayama campus in Tokyo or its Suzukakedai campus in Yokohama.

TAIST-Tokyo Tech の講義は，主に東工大の教員が担当し，タイの大学教員が協力教

員として補佐や実習を行います。いくつかの講義科目は 1 週間の集中講義タイプで，

東工大の教員が現地で直接指導します。その他の講義科目は，現地での集中講義と

東工大の大岡山／すずかけ台キャンパスからの遠隔講義の組み合わせ，あるいは遠

隔講義のみで構成されています。

TAIST-Tokyo Tech provides three engineering master's degrees programs: Automotive Engineering (AE), Information and Communication for Embedded Systems (ICTES) and Advanced and Sustainable Environmental Engineering (EnvE).

TAIST-Tokyo Tech has established a new certificate program, Rail Transportation (RT). This course will be launched in 2018. Mahidol University will join the TAIST-Tokyo Tech collaboration and provide space and facilities for education course management. Lectures will be given by professors from Tokyo Tech and Railway Technical Research Institute (RTRI), Japan.

現在 TAIST-Tokyo Tech では，自動車工学（AE），組込情報システム（ICTES），環

境工学（EnvE）の 3 つのプログラムを開講しています。マヒドン大学と協力し，

Graduation Ceremony was held on 21 July 2016 at NSTDA Auditorium CO-113. This year, there were a total of 51 graduates from TAIST-Tokyo Tech’s programs in Automotive Engineering (AE), Information and Communication Technology for Embedded Systems (ICTES) and Advanced and Sustainable Environmental Engineering (EnvE). Among the fifteen AE graduates, six students were enrolled at King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT), and nine at King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang (KMUTL). Out of nineteen ICTES graduates, seven students were registered at Sirindhorn International Institute of Technology (SIIT) and twelve at Kasetsart University. For EnvE program, eight students came from Kasetsart University, and nine from SIIT.

2016 年 7 月 21 日，第 8 回 TAIST-Tokyo Tech 修了式が NSTDA で開催されました。

学暦 2015 年度は，自動車工学 15 名，組込情報システム 19 名，環境工学 17 名の計

51 名が修了しました。

Every year, TAIST-Tokyo Tech receives generous support from its sponsors to set up scholarships. This year at the Graduation Ceremony, there was a presentation of the following scholarships. Hino Motors Scholarship: Ms. Pichamol Thirasuppasri was selected from the new students in the TAIST Automotive Engineering (AE) Program to receive the scholarship for 2016. TAKI Scholarship: Mr. Ukrish Vanichrujee and Mr. Sorawit Amornwutiroj, new students in TAIST's Information and Communication Technology for Embedded Systems (ICTES) Program and Advanced and Sustainable Environmental Engineering (EnvE) Program, were selected as the recipients.

式典では毎年，その年の新入生への奨学金授与式も執り行います。今年は日野自動

車奨学金および滝久雄奨学金の授与式を執り行いました。

The TAIST Suyama Challenge Project, an innovation contest, was held for TAIST-Tokyo Tech students for the first time in June 2016. Tokyo Tech's Adjunct Professor Akinori Nishihara presented the best performance team with the award on Mr. Suyama's behalf.

An orientation session was held for new TAIST-Tokyo Tech students on 3 August 2016 at NSTDA Auditorium, Thailand Science Park. On hand to welcome new students were NSTDA executives, faculty members and researchers. In addition to general information, students were also briefed on exciting research projects in fields related to the TAIST-Tokyo Tech courses.

れ，新入生は関係者から大いに歓迎されました。

In addition, new TAIST-Tokyo Tech students also joined an orientation that NSTDA organized for new scholars under various NSTDA programs, namely Thailand Graduate Institute of Science and Technology (TGIST), NSTDA-University-Industry Research Collaboration (NUI-RC), Young Scientist and Technologist Program (YSTP) and TAIST-Tokyo Tech. That orientation was held from 3-5 August 2016 at Cholapruek Resort in Nakhon Nayok Province. It was an excellent platform for TAIST-Tokyo Tech students to meet and form a network with young bright students from other programs.

Dr. Omjai Saimek (NSTDA Vice President), Asst. Limited on 3 February 2016. The team met with Mr. Masahito Kanada, Director and Mr. Kanaphot Tawitchasri, Manager. The purpose of the visit was to present a new year’s greeting, update the company on the progress of TAIST-Tokyo Tech program and express appreciation for the company’s continuous support of the program.

Western Digital (Thailand) Company

On 17 February 2016, Ms. Chantira Mongkolwai (Director of NSTDA Graduate and Professional Program) and Ms. Sutisa Apisiridej (NSTDA Analyst) visited Western Digital (Thailand) and met with Mr. Threerasak Sa-nguanmanasak, Manager, Staffing Center (Thailand) Human Resources Department and Mr. Pricha Leelanukrom, Senior Manager, CSR/EICC Supply Chain. The objective of the visit was to present a new year’s greeting and discuss the internship opportunity for TAIST-Tokyo Tech students at Western Digital (Thailand).

Thanakorn Vegetable Oil Products Company Limited

On 5 April 2016, Ms. Chantira Mongkolwai and Ms. Sutisa Apisiridej of NSTDA visited Thanakorn Vegetable Oil Products to introduce NSTDA’s human resource development program and discuss the company’s plan to establish an R&D laboratory at Thailand Science Park. Thanakorn Vegetable Oil Products is one of the regional leaders in vegetable oil and animal feed products. Its brand “COOK” is a household name for vegetable oil.

2016 年 4 月 5 日，NSTDA の Chantira 氏ら一行は Thanakorn Vegetable Oil Products Company Limited を訪問し，NSTDA における同社の研究所設立について議論しまし

た。同社はベジタブルオイルおよび動物の飼料を製造しており，オイルは”COOK”という名で知られています。

Innovation Group

On 16 May 2016, TAIST-Tokyo Tech administrative team led by Dr. Omjai Saimek, NSTDA Vice President, visited Innovation Group and met with Dr. Banja Junhasavasdikul, President and Director. TAIST-Tokyo Tech team introduced information about TAIST Tokyo Tech program and the meeting included discussions of possible collaboration in human resources development.

Innovation Group is a supplier of a wide range of rubber and polymer products to automotive, electronic, electric and general rubber industries. The company has a research laboratory well equipped with scientific instruments for advanced research in polymers and rubber. Innovation Group also sets up scholarships to contribute to the development of polymer & rubber technology in Thailand.

2016 年 5 月 16 日，NSTDA の Omjai 副長官ら一行は Innovation Group を訪問し，同

社の代表に TAIST-Tokyo Tech を紹介しました。同社はゴムやポリマー製品のサプラ

イヤーで，同社の研究所は最先端の設備を備えています。

Bridgestone Asia Pacific Technical Center Co., Ltd. On 13rd March 2017, Dr. Omjai visited the management team of Bridgestone Asia Pacific Technical Center Co., Ltd. including Mr. Tai Kawasaki, Managing Director, Mr. Sittiporn Aramvit, Senior Human Resources Manager, and Ms. Thatchanok Kieowsaeng General Manager, Human Resource and Administration, General Manager, Finance and Account. Dr. Omjai presented a commemorative plate in appreciation

to Asia Pacific Technical Center Co., Ltd.. The company expressed interest in recruiting TAIST Tokyo Tech students to join the company.

2017 年 3 月 13 日，Omjai 副長官ら一行は Bridgestone Asia Pacific Technical Center Co., Ltd.を訪問し，TAIST-Tokyo Tech の賛助会加入について感謝の意を表しました。同

社は TAIST-Tokyo Tech の学生の採用について関心があるようでした。

Students in the 10th batch of the Automotive Engineering Program visited Polyplastics Company Limited on 27 October 2016. They were greeted and introduced to the work of the company by Mr. Ratcharoj Chareonsak.

同社の業務内容について説明を受けました。

Tokyo Tech and NSTDA organized the Joint Symposium for International Industry-Academia Collaboration on 6 March 2017. The symposium focused on the possibility of future joint research among Tokyo Tech, Thai institutions and Thai companies. Researchers from Tokyo Tech and partner institutions introduced research seeds which would be of interest to industry. Prof. Dr. Toshio Maruyama, Executive Vice President for Education and International Affairs of Tokyo Tech gave the opening remarks, and Prof. Dr. Katsunori Hanamura explained the outline of the program. Prof. Mitsuhiko Oi introduced some examples of Tokyo Tech’s successful collaboration with industry. Researchers of both countries made presentations of research topics in 4 parallel sessions. Dr. Narong Sirilertworakul, President of NSTDA gave the closing remarks. With about 100 participants from both industry and academia present at the symposium, further enhancement of research collaboration between Tokyo Tech and industry in Thailand is expected.

2017 年 3 月 6 日，東工大と NSTDA による産学連携シンポジウムがタイで初めて開

催されました。このシンポジウムは，東工大とタイ企業の将来的な共同研究を目指

すもので，産業界や学術界から約 100 名が参加しました。東工大から産学共同研究

の事例が紹介された他，日・タイ双方の研究者から研究トピックについて紹介され

ました。

National Electronics and Computer Technology Center (NECTEC)

Students of the 10th batch of the Automotive Engineering Program visited the Solar Technology Laboratory and Image Technology Laboratory of NECTEC on 23 November 2016.

2016 年 11 月 23 日，自動車工学第 10 期生が NSTDA の研究所 National Electronic and Computer Technology Center （NECTEC）を訪問しました。

On 15 December 2016, students of the 9th batch of the Information and Communication for Embedded Systems Program visited Smart Machine and Mixed Reality Laboratory, Energy Forecasting and Control Technology Laboratory and Internet Innovation Laboratory.

2016 年 12 月 15 日には，組込情報システム第 9 期生が NECTEC を訪問しました。

Sakura Exchange Program in Science

The TAIST-Tokyo Tech Student Exchange Program offerred a 3-week study trip in Japan to TAIST-Tokyo Tech students. The trip took place from 30 October - 19 November 2016, and ten second-year master's students from TAIST — including eight students from Thailand, one student from Pakistan, and one student from Sri Lanka — participated. The program provided TAIST students with the opportunity to spend about three weeks conducting collaborative research with Tokyo Tech students at the laboratory of the Tokyo Tech faculty member who co-supervises their research.

ACTIVITIES FOR EXCHANGE STUDENTS

Tokyo Tech implemented the TAIST-Tokyo Tech Student Exchange Program 2016 in Thailand. The Tokyo Tech students attended a series of TAIST intensive lectures given by a Tokyo Tech professor, and also participated in internships at NSTDA. The TAIST students and the Tokyo Tech students also made cultural trip. Students from TAIST-Tokyo Tech’s Advanced and Sustainable Environmental Engineering program and two exchange students under this program; Mr. Alexander Grohlich from Germany and Mr. Masaya Kobayashi from Japan, joined a cultural visit to Ayuthaya province on 6 September 2016.

も実施しました。派遣学生は，現地の学生とともに TAIST-Tokyo Tech の講義を受講

した他，NSTDA の各研究室においてインターンシップに取り組みました。休日には

The Suyama Challenge Project is an innovation contest, conceived with the objective of inspiring students to be aware of the world’s problems, to be socially responsible, and to develop teamwork skills. It is intended to foster the development of active, creative, and cooperative TAIST students. The Challenge was initiated and sponsored by Mr. Eizo Suyama, a TAIST supporter and alumnus of Tokyo Tech. In the Challenge, inter-program teams of TAIST students identify real-world problems and propose innovative solutions or mitigation methods using technical knowledge and creativity.

The TAIST Suyama Challenge Project 2016 was held on 22 June 2016 at Thailand Science Park. This is the first time the contest was held. Four teams of students competed in the contest, presenting prototypes such as an identification system of manipulated digital images, a "smart" auto accident alarm system, a wall-climbing robot, and a virtual archery system.

Mr. Suyama and professors from Tokyo Tech joined the event via teleconference from the Ookayama Campus. The creators of the wall-climbing robot were selected for an award for best performance, while the team that created the virtual archery system received an award for best effort. The Suyama Challenge award presentation ceremony was held on 21 July 2016.

ーションコンテストです。東工大の同窓生である須山英三氏のご支援により実現し

ました。

今年は 4 チームが参加し，2016 年 6 月 22 日に作品コンテストが開催されました。須

山氏および東工大の TAIST-Tokyo Tech 担当教員も遠隔会議でコンテストに参加し，

審査を行いました。その結果，ウォールクライミングロボットを製作したチームが

優勝し，優勝チームは 7 月の修了式で表彰されました。

As a TAIST-Tokyo Tech student, I got many new experiences. It was my first time to study with talented professors from both Thailand and Japan, first time to go to Japan with support from TAIST and NSTDA, , etc. In this TAIST program, I got clever new friends from different fields. They all gave me broader perspectives on many things. Because I was a student of TAIST, I also got chances to do challenging things such as being a leader of recreation activities on TAIST sport day, and participating in a science camp and meeting. All these experiences made me grow up and all of these will be my best memories. I would like to say “Thank you for everything”. Thank you to all teachers, staff and friends with good guidance and relationship. They are like my second family and I love TAIST-Tokyo Tech.

TAIST-Tokyo Tech has been providing golden opportunities to Master’s degree students. With those opportunities, they can become excellent engine to drive Thailand forward. In my opinion, there are several benefits for me from TAIST program in that it has opened up my intellectual horizon, given a chance to work with researchers, and helped me get a better job.

First, pursuing the degree has opened up my intellectual horizon. Not only have the instructors come from different countries and different outstanding universities, but also have shown diverse points of view based on different technologies, cultures, and current situation. For example, a professor from Tokyo Institute of Technology explained in EnvE class how to manage nuclear power plant destroyed by tsunami, something which has never taken place

in Thailand. We can learn from him and might have a chance to implement our knowledge on preventing this kind of incident from happening in our country no matter what the cause is.

Second, the program of TAIST has given me a chance to work closely with researchers. That chance has shown me how actual working environment really is. Although I also found it so difficult to complete a given assignment, it made me realize that people can overcome it with teamwork and the right guidance. Moreover, working with researchers also helped me get to know people in the same or related fields and develop social skill throughout seminars and conferences.

Lastly, winning the scholarship from TAIST also helps me get a better job in the future. The scholarship on my resume roughly guarantees my qualification to a certain extent. Furthermore, studying in this program also inspires me to pursue my studies aboard to gain more knowledge to make a better living in the future.

For these reasons, I would like to thank TAIST program for the scholarship and great experience in academic path. The program has shown me a lot of benefits in terms of academics, working experiences and life. Even though my working life now is not as delighted as I have thought, I have a gut feeling that I must look for this kind of opportunity to study aboard and make my life as beautiful as I endeavor to obtain.
