Iceland Mourns the “Death” of Its First Melted Glacier

冰島為第一條消逝的冰河哀悼

Environmental and Earth scientists in Iceland have officially declared the death of one of the country’s

400 glaciers, and global warming is to blame. Rising temperatures have melted so much of the

glacier—known as Okjokull—that it is no longer considered to be a glacier. A bronze memorial marker

was placed on the glacier’s former site to commemorate its existence and warn future generations of the

need to act to slow climate change.

Also known as the “Black Death,” it was spread by fleas, which would pass the disease from

developed painful swollen lumps called “buboes” in their necks. Unfortunately, new case of

Global Education Levels Show Little Change

全球教育水準變化不大

Despite increased investment in education in OECD countries, a recent survey shows students’

achievement in math, science, and reading has changed little over the past two decades. However,

disappointing as these results are, they reflect the growing challenges facing educators as populations

grow and families migrate from the countryside to cities. While wealth appears to play a role in student

success, spending more on improving teacher performance may balance things out.

Although Taiwan has tried to become more international over the years, its efforts to become more

friendly to foreigners ran into a problem with Taipei’s new YouBike program. The popular

bike-sharing system briefly excluded foreigners, saying that only ID numbers from Taiwanese

citizens could be accepted. Eventually, the mayor of Taipei stepped in and made it possible for

foreign residents and tourists alike to be able to use YouBikes in Taipei.

Past studies on how humans communicate asked volunteers to judge whether they were chatting with

“Love,”“compassion,” “human,” “mercy,” “please,” “empathy,” “emotion,” “humanity,” and “alive”

were the top choices for words that sum up human existence.

Italy Hit Hard by Coronavirus

On January 30 of 2020, Italy reported its first two COVID-19 cases. Less than 2 months later, the

number of infected individuals in the country has increased dramatically to almost 28,000. In fact, Italy

now has the highest number of cases among all European nations. What is worse, public health experts

expect this number to continue rising.

In response to the crisis, The Prime Minister of Italy has declared a state of emergency. In a move

that started with the Northern region of Lombardy, the whole country has now been placed on lockdown.

This means cities like Milan and Venice, normally crowded with tourists, are closed off to outsiders.

Businesses catering to foreign visitors, like hotels and tour companies, have been hard-hit by this sudden

loss of income. As a result, many workers have been laid-off or put on unpaid leave.

The emergency restrictions affect Italy’s entire population of 60 million. Large public gatherings are

forbidden, with people advised to stay home. When going out, a one-meter distance should be maintained

from others. Anyone with symptoms like cough or fever is required to isolate himself or herself at home

immediately to avoid infecting others. The health-care system is already struggling under the heavy

burden of all the patients needing treatment. Doctors and nurses are exhausted and medical equipment

and hospital beds are in short supply.

Most Italians are putting on a brave face to cope with the difficult situation. Not all Italians are

adapting well to the new restrictions on their activities, however. Prisoners started fires and damaged jails

to protest authorities cancelling prison visits from family members.

While it keeps the virus under control, the government must also struggle to contain the spread of

fake news. Social media users have posted false rumors about armed soldiers in the streets and claims

about miracle cures for the virus that are not scientifically proven. Knowing lies and rumors can frighten

the populations, the government is calling for everyone to remain calm and hoping the virus’ spread can

be slowed by these measures until a cure is found.

2020年 1月 30日,義大利通報了新冠肺炎最早的兩個案例。不到兩個月,義國感染人數遽增
