Mori-J (Mori Koichiro) is a master of perfor-

mance and illusion-style dance. The Fukuoka-

born performance artist started out in Japan,

I am going to write some words I never

thought I’d write: Of all the places I’ve ever

left, Fukuoka is by far the most recent.

After 16 years in Fukuoka, 19 in Japan,

and 20 in Asia, I decided to call it quits

and move back to what some might call my

home country. I certainly wasn’t the first to

gaijin to leave and I know I won’t be the last,

but after a certain number of years here one

becomes known as a “lifer”. I crossed that

barrier long ago, yet I left anyway. Many were

shocked I decided to leave – including myself.

What made me leave? There are days I

don’t know how to answer that, because it

is so easy to remember why I stayed: I never

lost the sheer joy of participating in another

culture. Japan is so different from any other

place I have ever known, and yet despite the

difference it is surprisingly easy to live here.

I have friends who stayed here one or

two or three years, and they

promptly departed after

having ticked the mental box

“overseas experience”. Many

years later they still regret-

ted having left before tiring

of living in Japan. I never did

that; realizing early on what

a precious opportunity I had,

I swore I’d never leave until I

had drunk my fill of being here.

I am happy to say that,

for me, the glass of wonder

in Japan is still topped to the

brim. But I could never escape

the feeling that closing time

would nevertheless soon be

upon me. As a teacher, I was

very aware of the demograph-

ic time bomb that is darkening

自分がこんなことを書くことになるだろうとは、今まで考えたこともなかった。ここ福岡を最後にアメリカに帰

るってことをね。　16 年間を福岡で過ごし、日本での生活は通算 19 年、アジアでくくると 20 年間を外国の地で過ごしたことになるが、ついに母国へ戻る決意をした。もちろん、日本を去る外国人は僕が最初でも最後でもない。長らく滞在する外国人は、周囲からも “居住者 " として

認識されるようになるが、その境界線をとっくに超えた今さらの帰国宣言に周囲は驚いた。そして僕自身も。　なぜ帰国を決心したのかって？その問いに対する答えは難しいけど、どうしてこれほど長く滞在したかった理由は簡単さ。異文化への途切れることのない好奇心に尽きる。日本という国は、僕が知るどの国よりも異文化圏なのに驚くほど暮らしやすい。2,3 年滞在した友人たちは「そろそろ帰国の時じゃない？」

と、心の奥底から聞こえてくる声を無視できずに帰国するけど、後になって、もう少し長くいれば良かった、なんて後悔してる。ともあれ、今まで僕にはそんな声すら聞こえなかったんだ。今までは ...　しかし、日本との縁を感じながらも、ついには去るべき時が自分にも迫っている感覚から逃げ切ることができなかった。英語教師として教壇に立ちながら、年々生徒数が減少し多くの学校が閉校を余儀なくされる現実を目の当た

myself to a country and a people I don’t fully

understand after so long away. I want to test

myself in a new way, to see if I can still reach

deep inside and find the wherewithal to suc-

ceed in an entirely new place. With the world

economy being what it is, it’s a heckuva time

to be testing this theory, but the same rest-

lessness that drove me to Japan is pushing

me in an entirely new direction. And I am pow-

erless to resist it. I will always be back to visit

whenever I can, and everyone and everything

from my time in Japan lives in my heart still.

With fond remembrance I raise my glass to

you – and with the time difference, you’d bet-

Japan’s future. Every year the number of

students decreases compared to the year

before. The result is that I have seen several

schools close, including not a few that I used

to work for. Even the ones I worked for that

survived seemed pressed. Each year’s group

of students usually seemed a tad less capable

than the previous year’s, because the pool of

students that each school was drawing from

was constantly growing smaller.

With precious little job security and limited

employment opportunities beyond my chosen

profession, I worried a little more each year.

Would declining enrollments push me out of

the job market against my will?

I also had my children to think about. The

rationale for my employment was that Eng-

lish was a critical need, so much so that Japan

employed large numbers of native speakers. If

English were truly so crucial, how could I deny

my own children a chance to live full-time in

an English-speaking environment?

I know English teachers in Japan whose

children cannot speak English well. I did not

want my children to fall into the same trap.

Though my daughter spoke reasonably well,

her reading ability was low. After one year

in U.S. fifth grade, however, she quickly pro-

gressed from a reading level of nearly zero all

the way to National Honor Society. And I watch

her, and my two sons, with satisfaction, know-

ing they are making their own adventures.

Don’t think for a moment that I don’t miss

Japan. I have an absolute laundry list of things

I miss and can’t be replicated where I live: tops

among them would be hot springs, the moun-

tains of Kyushu, and that thrill of stumbling

across a unique gem of a restaurant or inn

tucked into a little valley. Most of all, I miss the

friends I made during my time in Japan. Find-

ing a small number of like-minded friends who

could help me out when I didn’t know what to

do, or commiserate with me when things were

going badly, was one of the greatest joys of

living in Japan. Life abroad is an intense expe-

rience; when you share that experience with

your best friends, you’ve got friends forever.

But now in my middle age (and yes, I have

to face that too!) I have decided that I want

another adventure. This one is to reintroduce

りにし、僕が教えていた学校も例外ではないと感じていた。外国人としての限られた選択肢の中において貴重で安定した職に恵まれてはいたけれど、日々不安は募るばかりだ。自分の意志に反して、このまま職を失うのではないか？そして子供たちの将来も心配だった。日本では英語のネイティブスピーカーの採用を増やしているのを見ても分かるよう、これからの就職には英語力が必要不可欠だ。その事実を鑑みると、子供たちは英語圏の環境に置くべきではないのか？概して日本に滞在する外国人講師の子供たちは英語力に乏しい。もちろん自分の子供たちにはそうなって欲しくなかった。英語での日常会話には不自由しなかったが読解力が十分でなかった娘にいたっては、5 年生からア

メリカの学校に転入させ、今ではネイティブと同等レベルに追いついた。子供たちが各々の力でたくましく、新しい環境に順応していく姿を誇らしく見守る父としての自分がいる。　日本が恋しくないかって？もちろん恋しいさ！恋しいものを挙げていったらキリがないし、そもそもとって代わるものもがないからね。例えば、温泉や九州の山々。渓谷にひっそりとたたずむ宿屋や食事処。そして何よりも日本にいる友だち。心を許せる友だちと出会い、過ごした時間は何にも勝る。困った時には寄り添い、励ましてくれた仲間たちのおかげで、最高の時間を過ごすことが出来た。海外での張りつめた生活の中で同じ思いを分かち合える友人に恵まれる、それはつまり、

人生における親友を得ることだ。　しかし中年となり（これも無視出来ない現実）、次への挑戦に気持ちが固まってしまったのだ。今回は母国への帰郷。長く離れていたため慣れないことばかりだし、感覚もずれてる気がする。それでも新たな場所でどこまで自分の根を張ることができるか試してみたいんだ。自分なりの方法でね。世界中が不況に喘ぐ中、こんな呑気なこと言ってられないのかもしれないが、僕を日本へと突き動かしたのと同じ、あの「ソワソワした感じ」には抵抗できない。日本には帰りたいときにいつでも帰れる。日本でのすべてはいつでも僕の心にある。まだ朝早いけど、時差があるからはじめるよ。大好きな日本へ、カンパイ！

In Fukuoka

Francine Méoule, the new Director of the Institut français du

Japon – Kyushu, is keen to get started in her new role bridg-

ing France and Kyushu through culture. Francine has spent

nine years of her career in Asia and loves it! She sees much

potential in Fukuoka and Kyushu and thinks the institute could di-

versify to include more pop culture such as manga and technology.

She plans to visit many places around Kyushu to familiarize herself

with the region and develop networks from which the institute can

initiate new events and also broaden awareness of their existing ac-

tivities. In addition to events by French artists and musicians and a

monthly cinema night at Nishitetsu Hall, the institute also operates

the area’s largest French language school complete with a resource

library of books and DVDs. This year marks the 30th anniversary of

sister city relations between Bordeaux and Fukuoka. The institute

has many events already planned, details of which can be found on

their website in French and Japanese. On a personal level, Francine

is looking forward to biking around the city, joining a yoga school

and getting settled in!

これは国内でのHIV感染者・エイズ患者の報告数と保健所での検査数のグラフ。平成23年はHIV感染者1,056名、エイズ患者473名（過去最多）の計1,529名。8年連続1,000名を超え，依然として高い水準で推移しております。福岡市では平成23年はHＩＶ感染者32名、エイズ患者10名の計42名(過去最多）でした。この報告数は検査を受けた人だけが対象なので、自分が感染していることを知らずに生活している人はもっと多くいるといわれています。

This graph shows reported cases of HIV infection, AIDS patients and number

of HIV tests at health centers in Japan. There were 1,056 cases of HIV

infection and 473 cases of AIDS reported for the year 2011, for a combined

total of 1,529 cases. For the past eight years, the number of cases of HIV and

AIDS has been over 1,000 per year. In Fukuoka City there were 32 cases of

HIV infection including cases of AIDS a combined total of 42 (a record high).

And that's not all – these �gures count only those who were tested. That

means there are more people going about their daily lives without knowing

that they have been infected.

12月 1日は世界エイズデーです。世界エイズデーイベントとして、中央区保健福祉センター（中央保健所）でHIV抗体即日検査を実施します。日時：12月 1日（土）、2日（日）受付時間：両日とも14:00 ̃ 15:00場所：中央区保健福祉センター（中央保健所）中央区舞鶴 2-5-1（あいれふ 5階）受付人数：両日とも先着50名（予約不要、無料、匿名）※ 結果は採血をして約 1時間後に直接本人にお渡しします。※ 感染の可能性のある日から約3ヶ月経ってからの検査をお勧めします。

discrimination and prejudice against HIV-infected people or AIDS patients.

1942 年 11 月 2 日が命日の詩人・童謡作家・歌人北原白秋を偲び、故郷である柳川で行われる幻想的な祭り。60 回目を数える今年も、ほおずき提灯やあんどんで飾られた 80 艘ほどのどんこ舟が約 1,000人を乗せ、川岸で演奏される白秋の童謡や歌曲の響きのなか夜の柳川をパレードする。秋の夜空を鮮やかに彩る花火も見逃せない。

16 世紀の終わりに始まったとされる唐津神社の秋祭り。三日間で約 50 万人が訪れる大祭は日本三大くんちの一つだ。獅子や龍などをかたどった 14 台の曳山はどれも華やかで勇ましい。見どころは３日の御旅所神幸（おたびしょしんこう）。唐津神社を９時半に出発し、西の浜明神台まで巡行した14 台の巨大な曳山が勢いよく砂地へ曳き込まれ、一堂に会する曳き込みは見逃せない。

◊ Park and Ride trialPark and Ride is a means for using the trans-

portation system in which people drive and

park at the nearest train station or bus stop

and transfer to public transportation. The ob-

jective is to reduce traffic congestion and CO2

emissions. It is now being conducted as a trial

for people who drive to work in the Tenjin and

Hakata areas. They will drive and park at the

parking lot at the Aeon Kashiihama Mall, and

take an urban expressway bus from a nearby

stop to work. Their only requirement is to pur-

chase a book of coupons to use the parking lot,

which costs ¥5,000 a month. Other than that,

the system is free. The trial will be conducted

from Nov.1 this year to Apr. 30 next year. The

service is available from 06:00~23:00. Inter-

ested people should apply at the information

booth on the first floor

of the Aeon Kashii-

hama Mall.

◊ Oyster Season is comingThe Miyaura district

on the west side of

Hakata Bay, known for

many years as Karato-

mari, is the only oys-

ter-producing area in

the city. One of the fa-

mous fall attractions

of Fukuoka is the oyster huts where people can

enjoy eating the large Ebisu oysters roasted

over charcoal. The huts open on Nov.1 at 13:00.

◊ name the new Gate in HakataA new gate to welcome tourists to the city

and serve as a new symbol for Hakata is

being built at 1 Hakataekimae, in front of

Jotenji Temple, and is slated to be finished

in 2013. It is designed in the image of the

Hakata of the Middle Ages, when the city

flourished as a center for trade. The de-

sign was modeled after a gate that stood

during the Edo period. It is to be a wooden

structure covered in tile and about eight

meters high. A solicitation for the new gate

name will be held from Nov. 1~22. Include

all the required information and send your

entry by postcard, fax, or e-mail. View the

contact the Hakata Ward Area Promo-

tional Division by telephone (419-1010) or

fax (434-0053).

Nagahama, Chuo Ward. There will be plenty

of rice, vegetables, fruit, chicken and other

eggs, meat, dairy products, and seafood

products for sale. Also, oysters, tempura,

chikuwa, and other products will be cooked

and sold on-site.
