As Muhammad Ali reached the end of a speech given to graduates, urging them to use their education to change the world, a student called out to him through the applause, asking for a poem. Ali responded with the brief but powerful statement: ”Me... We!” Archbishop Desmond Tutu put forward a similar ethos when he stated: “I am because we are.”

The world is full of slogans and soundbites boasting “reassuring” phrases. But Ali and Tutu were speaking of something deeper. In fact, Desmond Tutu’s words were intended to encapsulate a very special South African philosophy: Ubuntu, a word which, roughly translated, means “human kindness”. It is this spirit of interconnectedness that inspired the way we worked together as musicians on this recording.

As artists we believe that, in the famous words of John Donne, “no man is an island”. More than that, we believe that we are at our most human when we interact with others. Every meeting between two or more people creates something, brings out our humanity – sometimes for good, sometimes for evil. We are all interconnected, and that connectedness brings with it a responsibility to one another, a responsibility to make that connection valuable and equal.

So it is that our collaboration is one founded on a sense of fairness and equality, with every musician given freedom, creating an atmosphere of creative fairness and balance. To echo Ali’s words, “Me” represents myself, my musical ideas, my instruments. “We” consists of the collaboration with my friends and fellow performers: Barbara, Bill, Judith, Karoline, Bernhard and Axel. This is how the balance was achieved, and it permeates every moment of these recordings. My intention was to give each of my fantastic colleagues as much freedom as possible. Every musical nuance, every drop of talent, should be audible. Thus, reflecting the Ubuntu philosophy, we are a collective. We! I am because we are.

Als Muhammad Ali am Ende einer Rede an Absolventen einer Universität jene dazu aufruft ihre Ausbildung zu nutzen um die Welt zu verändern, ruft ihm ein Student aus dem Applaus heraus zu und bittet ihn um ein Gedicht. Ali antwortete mit einer ebenso kurzen, wie kraftvollen Aussage: “Ich….Wir!“ Erzbischof Desmond Tutu brachte das gleiche Ethos zum Ausdruck, indem er sagte: “Ich bin - weil wir sind”.

Die Welt ist voller Schlagwörter und prägnanter Zitate, die sich mit „beschwichtigenden Phrasen“ schmücken, jedoch sprechen Ali und Tutu von etwas tiefer Liegendem. In der Tat sind Desmond Tutus Worte dazu gedacht eine sehr spezielle südafrikanische Philosophie zu vermitteln: Ubuntu, ein Wort das grob übersetzt in etwa „Menschenliebe“ bedeutet. Es ist dieser Geist der Vernetztheit, der die Art, wie wir als Musiker an dieser Aufnahme zusammen gearbeitet haben, inspiriert hat. Als Künstler glauben wir, ganz im Sinne der berühmten Worte von John Donne, dass „niemand eine Insel ist“. Mehr noch glauben wir, dass wir als Menschen dann ganz bei uns sind, wenn wir mit anderen interagieren. Jedes Zusammensein von zwei, oder mehreren Menschen schafft etwas, und bringt unser Menschsein zum Vorschein – manchmal zum Guten, manchmal zum Bösen. Wir alle sind miteinander verbunden und es ist diese Verbundenheit, die eine gegenseitige Verantwortlichkeit mit sich bringt, einer Verantwortlichkeit, die diese Verbindung so kostbar und gleich macht.

So kommt es, dass unsere Zusammenarbeit in einem Sinn für Fairness und Gleichheit gründet, jedem Musiker Freiheit einzuräumen und dabei eine Atmosphäre schöpferischer Freiheit und Balance schafft. Um Alis Worte zu wiederholen, „Ich“ repräsentiert mich selbst, meine musikalischen Ideen, sowie mein Instrument. „Wir“ begründet sich in der Zusammenarbeit mit meinen Freunden und Musikerkollegen: Barbara, Bill, Judith, Karoline, Bernhard und Axel. Auf diese Art haben wir eine Balance erzielt, die jeden Moment dieser Aufnahmen durchdringt. Meine Absicht war es meinen fantastischen Kollegen so viel Freiheit, wie nur möglich zu geben. Jede musikalische Nuance, jedes Quäntchen Talent sollte hörbar sein. Auf diese Weise, im Sinne der Ubuntu-Philosophie, sind wir ein Kollektiv. Wir! Ich bin, weil wir sind.

Alors que Mohamed Ali concluait un discours devant des étudiants, les exhortant à mettre à profit leur éducation pour changer le monde, l’un d’eux l’interpella au milieu des applaudissements et lui demanda un poème. Ali répondit par cette déclaration brève mais puissante : « Moi… Nous ! ». Une philosophie similaire à celle de l’Archevêque Desmond Tutu quand il déclarait : « Je suis parce que nous sommes. »

Le monde est plein de slogans et de petites phrases « réconfortantes ». Mais Ali et Tutu évoquaient quelque chose de plus profond. La phrase de Desmond Tutu cherchait en fait à encapsuler une philosophie sud-africaine particulière  : Ubuntu, un mot que l’on peut traduire par « bonté humaine ». C’est cet esprit d’interdépendance qui a inspiré notre collaboration musicale sur cet enregistrement.

En tant qu’artistes, nous croyons comme John Donne qu’« aucun homme est une île ». Plus encore, nous pensons que nous sommes fondamentalement humains lorsque nous interagissons avec les autres. Chaque rencontre, entre deux personnes ou plus, crée quelque chose et met en valeur notre humanité - parfois pour le meilleur, parfois pour le pire. Nous sommes tous interconnectés, et cette connectivité apporte avec elle une responsabilité mutuelle, la responsabilité de rendre ce lien précieux et égal.

C’est pourquoi notre collaboration est fondée sur un principe d’équité et d’égalité, à travers la liberté accordée à chaque musicien, créant une atmosphère d’équilibre et d’équité créative. Pour reprendre les propos d’Ali, « Moi » me représente, mes idées musicales, mes instruments. « Nous » se compose de la collaboration avec mes amis et collègues artistes : Barbara, Bill, Judith, Karoline, Bernhard et Axel. Ainsi sommes-nous parvenus à cet équilibre qui imprègne chaque instant de ces enregistrements. Mon intention était de donner à chacun de mes formidables collègues autant de liberté que possible. Chaque nuance musicale, chaque goutte de talent, doit être audible. Ainsi, et reflétant la philosophie Ubuntu, nous sommes un collectif. Nous ! Je suis parce que nous sommes.

Barbara Dennerlein is an award-winning jazz organist who has received particular acclaim for her work on the Hammond organ. The All Music Guide to Jazz hailed her as “the most interesting jazz organist to emerge during the 1980s”, and Barbara reached No.7 in a readers’ poll taken by DownBeat Magazine in 2009. In

2013, Barbara was awarded a recording of honour [Ehrung durch Aufnahme] in the Hammond Hall of Fame. A true virtuoso of the instrument, Barbara plays a Hammond B3 organ for this recording, and appears courtesy of Bebab Records.

Barbara Dennerlein ist eine preisgekrönte Jazz-Organistin und erregte mit ihrer Arbeit an der Hammond Orgel besondere Aufmerksamkeit. Der “All Music Guide to Jazz” hat sie als “interessanteste Jazz-Organistin der

1980er Jahre” gefeiert und Barbara erreichte im Jahre 2009 den siebten Platz in der vom DownBeat Magazine durchgeführten Leserumfrage. Im Jahre 2013 wurde Barbara in die Hammond Hall of Fame durch Aufnahme ehrenhalber ausgezeichnet. Wie eine wahre Virtuosin auf diesem Instrument spielt Barbara in dieser Aufnahme auf der Hammond B3 Orgel. Diese Aufnahme erscheint mit freundlicher Genehmigung von Bebab Records.

Bill Ramsey is a legendary German-American singer and actor whose output in both fields is at once prolific and critically acclaimed. A friend of Gert’s for some 30 years, Gert was Bill’s bassist from 1984-1989. Bill’s distinctive voice is imbued with warmth and vitality, as well as a flexibility perfectly suited to jazz. Yet he defies categorisation,

with an output of some 50 singles, 24 LPs, 18 CDs, 28 feature films, as well as countless radio and television programmes. How many people in the German-speaking arts could call themselves a jazz star, pop star, and movie star all in one? Very few! Bill’s youthfulness also stems from his great sense of humour. “Is Bill,” Gert wonders, “83 or 38? I must check…”

Bill Ramsey ist ein legendärer deutsch-amerikanischer Sänger und Schauspieler, dessen Produktion in beiden Feldern für ihre Ergiebigkeit gelobt, wie auch von der Kritik umjubelt wird. Als langjährige Freunde (an die 30 Jahre) war Gert

von 1984-1989 Bills Bassist. Die unverwechselbare Stimme von Bill ist durchdrungen von Wärme und Vitalität, und mit seiner Vielseitigkeit auch perfekt für Jazz geeignet. Trotzdem entzieht er sich mit seiner Produktion von 50 Singles, 24 LPs, 18 CDs, 28 Spielfilmen, als auch zahlreichen Radio- und Fernsehsendungen jeglicher Kategorisierung. Wie viele Menschen in der deutschsprachigen Kunstszene können sich gleichzeitig als Jazz-, Pop-, und Filmstar bezeichnen? Sehr wenige! Bills Jugendlichkeit erwächst aus seinem großen Sinn für Humor. “Ist Bill 83, oder 38 geworden?” fragt sich Gert “Ich werde es wohl überprüfen müssen”.

le bassiste de Bill de 1984 à 1989. La voix distinctive de Bill est imprégnée de chaleur et de vitalité, ainsi que d'une souplesse parfaitement adaptée au jazz. Il défie pourtant toute catégorisation, avec une œuvre comprenant quelques 50 singles, 24 albums, 18 CD, 28 longs métrages et d’innombrables programmes de radio et de télévision. Combien de personnes dans le monde artistique germanophone sont à la fois star du jazz, pop star, et star de cinéma tout en un ? Très peu ! Karoline Höfler is another artist whom Gert has known for 30 years. She met Gert as a student at FMW in Frankfurt when he was a bass and ensemble teacher there. A double bass virtuoso, Karoline is described by Gert as the “subtle motor of Ubuntu”.

Karoline Höfler ist eine weitere Künstlerin, die seit rund 30 Jahren mit Gert in Kontakt steht. Sie traf Gert, damals Bass- und Ensemblelehrer an der Frankfurter Musikwerkstatt, als Studentin in Frankfurt. Als Bass-Virtuosin wird Karoline

von Gert als der “raffinierte Motor von Ubuntu” beschrieben.

Karoline Höfler est une autre artiste que Gert a connu depuis 30 ans. Elle a rencontré Gert en étudiant à FMW à Francfort quand il était bassiste et enseignant. Une contrebassiste virtuose, Karoline est décrite par Gert comme le « moteur

Axel Pape is an outstanding drummer whose exceptional musicianship and sense of rhythmic drive form the backbone of the band, alongside his creative contributions to the music’s structure and style.

Bernhard Hering is a master of percussion, playing the vibraphone and marimba on this album. His Klangraum studio is a hub for television and film music recordings, and as a composer the last 20 years have brought him numerous successes. Gert describes Bernhard as having a superb instinct for the crucial musical moment: “he is a humble,

great musician”.

Bernhard Hering spielt als Meister des Schlagzeugs das Vibraphon und die Marimba auf diesem Album. Sein “Klangraum-Studio” ist eine Drehscheibe für Fernseh- und Filmmusikaufnahmen und die vergangenen 20 Jahre als Komponist

haben ihm bereits zahlreiche Erfolge beschert. Gert beschreibt Bernhard als jemanden, der einen hervorragenden Instinkt für die entscheidenden Momente der Musik hat: “er ist ein bescheidener, großartiger Musiker”.

Judith Erb is already acknowledged to be a singer of great skill and nuance. Her career encompasses jazz, pop, experimental and electronic music, combining live and studio work with coaching and adjudicating roles. She has also been working on a volume of modern song for the publisher Josef Weinberger Verlag in Frankfurt.

Judith Erb ist bereits als Sängerin von großem Geschick und feinen Nuancen bekannt. Ihre Laufbahn umfasst Jazz, Pop, experimentelle und elektronische Musik. Hierbei kombiniert sie das Arbeiten auf der Bühne, wie auch im Studio

mit dem Coachen und dem Beurteilen von Rollenausschreibungen. Desweiteren arbeitet sie an einem modernen Liederband für den Josef Weinberger Verlag in Frankfurt.

Judith Erb est déjà reconnue comme une chanteuse de grand talent et toute en nuance. Sa carrière englobe jazz, pop, musique expérimentale et électronique, combinant performances live et studio avec ses fonctions de coach

et de juge. Elle a également travaillé sur un volume de chansons modernes pour l'éditeur Josef Weinberger Verlag à Francfort.

Gert Zimanowski is a musical polymath who combines his roles as composer and lyricist with his own inimitable jazz performances on soprano saxophone and keyboards, as well as the Sansula (a type of kalimba), and the slit drum. Gert plays a Yanagisawa-soprano sax with ‘Saxxpoon’.

Gert Zimanowski ist ein Musiker-Philosoph, der seine Rolle als Komponist und Texter mit seinen eigenen unnachahmlichen Jazz-Auftritten auf dem Sopransaxophon und dem Keyboard, wie auch dem Sansula (einer
