Planet SummerOdessa is entering the summer season. This is traditionally the time of rest in the city near the sea. Odessa’s beaches are full of vacationing people who have been missing the sunshine. The time for swimming in the sea is now. Some choose to swim in the day, under the parching sun, and some choose to do it at night — in the noctilucent water under the moon. Beach football, volleyball, competitions, entertainment and amusement make the summer time in Odessa unforgettable, not to mention the romance and the languishing sensibility of the city beaches. Odessa is a summer city. It is exactly that – refreshed by the marine water, illuminated by the hot summer sun, praised by enamored poets and writers, filled with aromas of acacia trees, it will stay in the memories of nonrandom guests, who always become its friends and admirers.

The city was populated by merchants, artisans and adventurers — mainly bachelors, who got into a port town in search of earnings and here, having acquired different types of property, understood that in their lives came the time to arrange families. Here came the turn of natural selection — beautiful women came to Odessa from very different countries and became citizens of the city. There is turbulent mixture of southern emotion, northern languor, western refinement and eastern sweetness in the blood of Odessa women. Add the wonderful climate and sea — they do not let our beautiful women get out of shape. There is also the port, due to which women living in Odessa have always replenished their wardrobe with the most fashionable outfits.

§ «Europe Day» festivities were celebrated in Odessa. The key event was an expo-fair titled «Europe Day-2012». The official opening ceremony of the exposition in the Odessa city garden was attended by members of the regional authority, city administration as well as diplomatic missions.

§ The Preparation department for foreigners of the Odessa University held Open Doors Days. Students viewed presentations about departments of ONU — a total of 25 fields of study. There are approximately a hundred students from Azerbaijan, Algeria, Angola, Cote d’Ivoire, Great Britain, Guinea, Iran, PRC, Mali, Mexico, Turkey, Syria, Turkmenistan studying at PDF today. Over 400 foreigners that graduated PDF are presently students of the I.I. Mechnikov ONU.

§ The first diplomatic club in Ukraine was opened on Gagarin Plato Square in Odessa. The reception house for foreign diplomats, accredited or visiting Odessa is situated in the former villa of Prince Gagarin. The opening ceremony of the diplomatic club was attended by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Konstantin Grishenko.

§ The visa center for obtaining Polish nationality and Schengen visas will open on the 21st of May at 125 Bolshaya Arnautskaya Street in Odessa. This message is made public by the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Odessa.

§ The most lengthy music festival in Europe this year will start off on the 28th of June in Gribovka (Odessa Region). The Summer Sound Griboffka International Music Fest'12 is expecting 100 thousand guests, which will come to enjoy the shows of world-known stars, including the best

trance project of the world in the past 5 years — the British team Above & Beyond.

§ The Odessa Railroad is starting to run 4 additional summer trains on the 27th of May. The directions affected are Odessa — Lviv and Odessa — Kharkov.

§ The Odessa airport has announced a new direction — a straight flight Odessa — Munich. The weekly Saturday flight in the direction Munich — Odessa is introduced due to the tourism attraction of our city for Germans as well as other Europeans.

§ The Odessa International Cinema Festival will be attended by a prominent British film-maker, writer and scriptwriter Peter Greenaway. He will conduct a training session for members of the summer film school about new opportunities of cinema and talk about his new film «Goltzius and the Pelican Company».In addition, American film-maker Todd Solondz and the grandson of Charley Chaplin are honorary guests of the Film Festival. § Administrators of 18 leading Polish higher education institutions and their Ukrainian colleagues gathered for a «round table» meeting at the I.I. Mechnikov ONU. Rectors, deans and councilors from academic institutions of the two countries discussed standards of higher education, future steps of Ukrainian-Polish educational cooperation and student exchange programs. «Students from Poland may not be numerous in Odessa Region, but the quality of their education here is excellent», – noted Consul General of the Republic of Poland in Odessa Joanna Strzelczyk.

First of all, a person who is speaking loudly in a bus is associated with a drunk, aggressive person or one who does not sustain common precepts of decency. Second, many people do not want other people to hear their conversations. Such style of communication is typical of many countries in the world and has its roots not only in Eastern Europe.

I followed the footsteps of my father — he is also a wrestler. I was at first interested in kick-boxing, but my father insisted that I chose wrestling. For ten years I can't imagine myself without sport.I was a winner at regional competitions in 2002–2005. The first time I became champion was in 2006 when, after defeating a strong opponent, I won the gold of the Championship of Turkey among juniors (14–17 years of age). Then I defended my title in

2007. I became the champion of Eurasia in Azerbaijan in 2008 within the category under 69 kilograms. In 2009 and 2010 I was the champion of Tukrey again… My father taught me that a sportsman should not know the word «impossible». I trained 5–6 hours per day, 4 days a week. I jogged on Saturdays and Sundays. Unfortunately, I seriously injured my shoulder a year ago. My doctor prohibited any professional sport activities for the period of recovery. But I'm still a sportsman at heart. I studied in college simultaneously with doing sports; I know Mathematics and Physics quite well.I chose Odessa for obtaining education because it is close to home. I can visit my parents quite often. I want to enter the Odessa National Marine University and become a broker. I have my parents to thank for my fate in many respects, and I am very grateful to them.

Biology has been as relevant as ever in the past two centuries. ONU is named after one of the foremost biologists who has

worked here — the Nobel Prize winner Ilya Mechnikov. I. M. Sechenov, A. and V. Kovalevskys, L. Tsenkovsky, A. Bogomoletz,

D. Zabolotny, F. Kamensky, B. Hafkin, and other no less remarkable scientists, biologists and microbiologists have

studied and worked at ONU. J. Ivanovski discovered viruses in Odessa in 1898. Today the Biology Department includes a Botanical Garden, a Zoological Museum, a Hydrobiological

Station, as well as research laboratories and production centers, in which students, postgraduates and trainees study and may

engage in research work. Graduates of the Biology Department are working in all fields of the science, related to the production 

of living organisms, medicine and biotechnology.

«The Turkmen of the world» have been helping youth from Turkmenistan in gaining higher education in our brotherly Ukraine for eleven years. There are 10 000 of my countrymen studying here now. The community is quite large (to take in regard the fact that Turkmenistan's population is a little over 5 000 000 people and its territory is almost 500 000 square kilometers — V.P.). The Turkmen are mainly studying in the higher education institutions of Kharkov, Kyiv, Lugansk, Dnepropetrovsk, Poltava, Ivano-Frankovsk and, of course, the beauty called Odessa.Which specialties are the Turkmen university entrants interested in?There is a construction boom in our country now. Builders are highly in favor in Turkmenistan. Ukrainian builders are especially valued. They have recently built a unique engineering construction — the bridge over Amu Darya. The subterranean portion of the structure reaches 105 meters in depth — this project could have been completed only by Ukrainians. Besides construction, the traditional sector of our economy is oil and gas development — here Ukrainian specialists also help and it is important to note the aid from the unique in the former USSR region, Ivano-Frankovsk National Technical

University. Further by popularity follow the polytechnic specialties, education studies (especially — teaching foreign languages), IT and pre-school education. Why do the Turkmen choose Ukraine for obtaining higher education?There are several reasons why the Turkmen choose to study specifically in Ukraine. First of all, it is the quality and low price of education. Multiskilled specialists are prepared here, which is very important in Turkmenistan. Second, the climate — the difference in median temperatures between Ukraine and Turkmenistan is not greater then 5–6 degrees Celsius. Third, our systems of secondary education are very similar because of the USSR's heritage. There are almost no psychological or language barriers for Turkmen in Ukraine as students are still studying Russian in schools. One would think that Turkey would be a better choice because of the similar language, but Turkmen meet more adaptation issues and take more time to get used to Turkey then to Ukraine. I am sure that the cooperation in the field of education between our two countries will continue to develop.

From the 1880’s till 1991 (110 years) the Turkmen and Ukrainians were united by first the Russian Empire and then the USSR. The head of the humanitarian organization «The Turkmen of the world» Niyazmurat Halliyev told us about the Turkmen youth that want to obtain education in Ukraine.

How long have you been working in the field of education?It has been eight years since our organization started helping Chinese university entrants to gain a higher education in Ukraine. There are now over 2 000 Chinese students in Odessa. It is quite a few, but there have been even more. Many Chinese students have successfully graduated from Odessa higher education institutions, obtained honors diplomas, and found good jobs in their Motherland.What kinds of knowledge are more valuable in PrC?Ukrainian graduates are generally valued, aside from professional skills, for a high level of knowledge in the Russian language. A Ukrainian higher education diploma has a high status in our country. Diplomas of the Odessa Marine University and the I.I. Mechnikov University are especially valuable. It is not rare that the very first

workplace offers a salary of one thousand USD per month to these graduates.What more, other than education, attracts Chinese youth to Odessa?First of all, it is the architecture. Starting with 2005 «ARMAN EDUCATION» has been overseeing all stages of education that Turkish students go through in Ukrainian higher education institutions. At this time there is not one university in Odessa that does not render education to our members. There are over 300 members now.Which Ukrainian cities and higher education institutions do the Turkish choose?You are correct in that question — it is first about cities, and then about institutions. The city where the education institution is located is very important for Turkish students. It is not surprising that they have lately been gaining interest in the very colorful and culturally developed Lviv. This is a sort of the latest fashion. It is traditional that the Turkish study in Kharkov, Donetsk, Zaporozhe, and, of course, Odessa. With time Turkish entrants discover for themselves new cities, ones where their countrymen haven't been studying yet.Why is Turkish youth so actively traveling abroad for education?It takes only a two-hour flight from Istanbul to Odessa. That is less than from one side of the largest city in Europe (Istanbul) to the other by taxi. Turkish higher education institutions can offer their services only to 400 000 students. Over a million are forced either to work or to travel abroad for obtaining a higher education. Besides, there are over 40 million people in our country that are younger than 35. Therefore, one who does not enter a university at the first try has even lesser chances of it the next year — there are limitations at the legislative level. Ukraine is one of our partners in the issue. Our government puts all efforts into helping students study abroad.

What is the procedure of nostrification for Ukrainian diplomas in Turkey?It is quite simple. There is a list of specialties, which are accredited in Turkey. A Ukrainian diploma is legitimate without limitations within those. There are 12 such specialties, accredited from the I.I. Mechnikov ONU — this is a very high indicator (other Odessa higher education institutions range from 4 and lower). There are 75 students from Turkey here now. They are guaranteed a job from our government as soon as they graduate. The following fields of study are especially popular among Turkish students — IT, law, foreign languages and international economic relations. Many graduates continue cooperation with Ukrainian partners — they become trading representatives of Turkish companies in Ukraine, establish stores or restaurants.Could you tell us about the attitude towards Ukrainians from Turkish students?It is a very interesting question. You know, at first many of our students consider Ukrainians to be non-emotional, even cold people. With time they change this first impression. It is also interesting that international marriages between Turkish and Ukrainian citizens are quite common. For example up to 40 couples decide to enter into matrimony according to the data of the Consulate General of Ukraine in Istanbul.In conclusion, thank you for the interesting responses and keen remarks. Our joint effort is to help people from Turkey who want to come to Ukraine in order to study in one of the Odessa's higher education institutions.When some foreign school graduate chooses a higher education institution abroad, he will surely be offered assistance from middlemen, which will deal with documents, legitimization and all other things that will let the student to have an easy trip, to get acquainted and to start education. We help students obtain an invitation from the university that they have chosen. This invitation goes a long way — from Odessa, through Kyiv, to Turkey. There, a student prepares his or her set of documents and goes through a medical examination.We, on our part, prepare the necessary documents here, in Ukraine. When the student comes here, everything will be provided — the documents, the residence card, he won't need to spend time in the long queues…

What is the difference between you and other middlemen?We charge much less for our services. This is good because it is a reason for trust. Where a lot of money is involved, there is never mutual trust. But it is also bad because this imposes limits — we cannot afford to expand as actively as our competitors, and also we are unable to afford active advertisement in Turkey. However, we take care of our students constantly, and besides, we let them into the community and help those who used the services of other middlemen. Those who use our services come to Ukraine through us and automatically become the members of the community of Turkish students. From their contribution we transfer funds to their membership cards, which is also advantageous for them. We also offer good discounts for quality restaurants, so this should also be taken into account!

foreign students continuing education at Odessa I.I.Mechnikov National University in 2012-2013 academic year before leaving for vacations have to obtain temporary residence permits.For this purpose they have to submit the following documents to the Institute of International Education:•­­information about results of the exem period;•­­receipt about payment of tuition fees for the period of permit execution•­­residence certificate•­­passport document and copies of its pages with personal data, visa, resistration and/or copy of immigration card (if available)•­­notarized translation into the Ukrainian language of passport document page with the personal data•­­personal standard application (is filled by the student personally at IIE)•­­4 photographs  3.5 х 4.5 cm on mat paper•­­receipt about payment of state taxTemporary residence permits are handed out under condition of the students' personal signatures and on thier presentation of their passport documents; into the passport documents special standard stamps about obtaining such permits are placed. The term of the permit execution is 15 days.After obtaining the permit of temporary residence students have to register their place of residence (be registered by passport officer) within a 10-day term, to get a corresponding standard stamp on

the permit and submit it into the IIE centre of passport-visa support.In case if students' place of residence or conditions of their stay in Ukraine change, they have to inform IIE of it within a 7-day term.If there are no reasons for prolonging terms of validity of the temporary residence permit, a foreign student has to withdraw from residency and to leave Ukraine within a 7-day term. The permit is submitted into IIE. In case if a student decides not to return to Ukraine after the vacation, he or she has to send the permit together with a written application about intentions not to continue studies to IIE.Exit out of and entry to Ukraine of foreign students is realized only on condition that they have the temporary residence permit. A student has to inform the Dean's office of the Institute of International Education about his or her travel in Ukraine and about plans of leaving it not shorter than 7 days prior to the planned trip. How does a foreigner continue education in Ukraine?In the case that a foreign entrant plans to continue studying at the I.I. Mechnikov ONU on the basis of a bachelor's, specialist's or master's diploma, which was obtained outside of Ukraine, the nostrification (legal approval) by the Ministry of Education and Science, Youth and Sport of Ukraine is necessary for the documents. The procedure must be completed during the first year of education.ONU supports its students by offering consultation and organization assistance in this process.

Where does a foreign student live?All foreign students, postgraduates and trainees of Odessa national Mechnikov university are provided with an accommodation in a hostel if they wish.Usually these are rooms for 2–4 people with common kitchen and sanitary facilities. They are very cheap (for example, in ONU foreign students pay only 240 hrivnas per month). The hostels are conveniently located near classrooms — usually in 5–10 — minute walk from the university. Each hostel is provided with gyms, libraries, canteens. It is especially nice to live in the hostels in Frantsuzskiy Boulevard — they are located not only near the university but also near the sea. Near the hostels sport complex of ONU is situated, it has pitches, gyms with training devices, running tracks.

Which sciences are for postgraduates and trainees?All the branches of education for post-graduate studies available at the I.I. Mechnikov ONU are listed at the IIE website (imo.onu.edu.ua) in the «For postgraduates» section of the «Fields of study» menu.

The life of a normal Ukrainian is bisected in to separate stages by two big holiday periods — the New Year and the May holidays. It has historically came to be that starting with the 25th of December till the 19th of January and from the end of April till the 9th of May Ukrainians are prone to festivity. In Russian the etymology of this word is indicative — PRAZDNOVAT — means to rest from work, LINGER. But Ukrainians don't really linger — they MARK celebrations. May holidays are especially MARKABLE and by that REMARKABLE. One hundred years ago only one «May» holiday was celebrated — easter. Then pervomay was added — at first these holidays were opposed to each other, but in time they confidently placed themselves nearby in Ukrainian calendars. During the existence of the USSR PERVOMAY was marked by general demonstrations.mayovka is a traditional celebration of the pervomay with turning to nature and cooking the traditional meat dish — Shish Kebab. This dish came to Ukraine from the South, from Arabic and Turkish countries, but it gained such popularity that now it is considered national food. The word comes from the Turkish siskebap, where sis means skewer and kebap means roast meat. Deliscious shish kebab may be made of lamb, pork, veal or even poultry. The rest is entirely up to an individual. Some people make

marinade of vinegar, some — of spices, and some don't make any marinade for meat at all. But the outcome is always outstandingly delicious. The dish is festive and remarkable.The tradition of meeting with friends and relatives outdoors in May existed for a very long time. At different times it was connected with different ideological reasons, but it always resulted in communication between people. During these days people always turned to nature. One leaves the hospitable walls and all the comfort of civilization, becoming similar to a primeval human by making a fire of logs in order to feel oneself a part of the huge or little social unity. And the main point is that mayovka may be held not only on the 1st of May, and not even only in May. The author knows of occasions when mayovkas were held in October and November. The only unbreakable law is that mayovka must bring a good, SPRING MOOD!

Foreigners always notice the features of a foreign culture more clearly than its local citizens. The locals often follow many of their traditions without contemplation, automatically. Let’s look at one of such Ukrainian traditions — MAYOVKA — from a different angle.

Lectures, credits, exams are already behind, we can breathe in deeply and look forward to something that is ahead, and ahead there is only rest, new friends and summer gatherings. A lot of foreign students are going home to tell their nearest and dearest about their achievements, and maybe, about adventures which have taken place in our city. But some of them still strive to stay in Odessa and continue their adventures.So, the question arises, where can we have a good time? It's wonderful that we have an opportunity to obtain not only a good education, but a good rest in our city. First of all, of course, we recommend you to go to the beach! How can we spend the summer without the sea? If you prefer spending your time actively, then by means of a ball, smile and sport enthusiasm you will have no difficulty in organizing a group of volleyball players, and find new friends. But remember, it is undesirable to stay under the sun from 12 to 15.00. Even during rest you need to take care of your health.Walking along the beach makes you very hungry. If you miss your national cuisine, we have good news for you: it's not a problem for our city. There are Turkish, Georgian, Japanese, Chinese, Italian, Spanish restaurants in Odessa, all to your taste.After having a meal, take a walk about the romantic centre of our city. Do not think that you have already been everywhere. Odessa is

a city that surprises you every day.When time is closer to the evening we think of famous entertainment centre Arcadia. It's the place where all young people gather to relax and have fun. If you enjoy noisy companies, this suggestion is just for you. But do remember that while having a rest, we should think about our health. Do not do anything that you will be ashamed to tell your children about later.For those who prefer a quiet atmosphere we strongly recommend visiting Odessa theatres. We are sure you will be pleased! The theatre is the place, where you can not only enjoy Russian and Ukrainian languages, but also to get to know our culture more.So, enjoy your rest, gain stamina for the new academic year. We hope you will spend your summer in a cheerful and positive way!
