Ons het ten spyte van die beperkings wat die bestuur van Covid19-protokolle op ons geplaas het, ‘n uiters suksesvolle eerste kwartaal beleef. Die feit dat ons seuns elke dag kon skool toe kom en daar min onderbrekings was, het genoegsame akademiese tyd geskep. Ons is dankbaar dat sport- en kultuuraktiwiteite weer kon begin en sekere kompetisies, byeenkomste en wedstryde in die eerste kwartaal kon plaasvind.

Die wintersportprogram het met volle ywer begin en ‘n paar hokkie-oefenwedstryde het al plaasgevind. Our u14A, u14B, u16A and u19A hockey teams are taking part in the Cape Town Premier League event over the holidays to be hosted at Constantiaberg Hockey Club in Cape Town from 23 – 26 April. Our u16B, u16C and u19C teams are taking part in the Paarl Gymnasium Festival from 26 – 28 April.

Projekte• Die JF Marais-mediasentrum sal teen die einde van April voltooi wees. Ons is opgewonde ten opsigte van die bydra van

hierdie fasiliteit tot die ontwikkeling en blootstelling van die Paul Rooser. Die fasiliteit sal deur René Walsh wat reeds in Januarie by ons aangesluit het, bestuur word. Kliek hier.

• Die ou motorhuiskompleks langs Novakoshuis word tans omskep in ‘n klein koshuis, Secunda, wat 18 seuns en ‘n diensdoenende onderwyser sal huisves. Vanaf die derde kwartaal sal Secunda bewoon word.

• Op die sonwyser in Gimnasiumplein sal die name aangebring word van alle akademiese personeel wat in diens oorlede is. Die sonwyser is in lyn met die Tuin van Herinnering.

• Die badkamers van Primakoshuis sal vanjaar opgradeer word. Verder beoog ons om die laaste kamers in Nova wat nog nie opgradeer is nie, te voltooi.

• Die bouprojek van die binnenshuise krieketsentrum maak goeie vordering en sal teen die einde van Julie voltooi wees. Die sentrum bestaan uit drie snelboullane, een draaiboullaan en twee balmasjienlane.

Finansiering van Remgro, die Universiteit van Stellenbosch en Paul Roos Gimnasium het hierdie projek moontlik gemaak. The centre will also form part of the main cricket field which will give The Oval an unique cricket stadium feel. Die ou sintetiese oefennette is afgebreek en vervang met vyf nuwe sintetiese nette en die ou turfnette sal vervang word met vier nuwe turfnette. Deel van die beplanning is ook om die nette langs Piet Retiefstraat op te gradeer. These facilitieswill enable us to run a constructive cricket programme.

• Ons vergroot in die Julievakansie drie van ons kleiner klaskamers in die LPR-gebou. Die projek is finansieel moontlik gemaak deur die PRG 150 Trust.

Sy assistente, Audrey, verlep daagliks vanweë ’n uitbuitende verhouding en Seymour wat alles in die winkel moet laat blink se oë verdof omdat Audrey blind is vir sy sjarme

Alles verander in ’n lelike ding … toe ’n plant met ’n eetlus vir bloed … sy kop uitsteek. Hierdie musiekblyspel gee al sedert die jare 80 gehore wêreldwyd hoendervleis en maagpyn van die lag. DEBATINGDebating at Paul Roos Gymnasium started well and has drawn many schools to compete for a place in the provincial trials. The official Boland League has started and is expected to be a tough but enjoyable competition.

Toastmasters began on 24 February and has grown tremendously this year. The gala evening was held on 20 April with eight Paul Roos Gymnasium learners and eight Bloemhof learners.

DEBATPaul Roos het op Woensdag, 14 April, die eerste Paul Roos Interskole Debatsliga aangebied.

Die Wes-Kaap se top sewe debatskole, onder andere DF Malan en Bloemhof, het deelgeneem.

Daar was 28 spanne en altesaam 84 leerders wat tydens die onvoorbereide debatte kom bewys het dat hulle op hul voete kan dink of sink oor, of Suid-Afrika slegs een amptelike taal behoort te hê en, of Suid-Afrika gekwalifiseerde stemreg moet instel.

Baie geluk aan Paul Roos se juniorspan en drie seniorspanne wat almal teen Boishaai skoonskip gemaak het.

Die volgende ronde vind op 19 Mei plaas.

Die PRG-redenaarsspan vir 2021 is goed op dreef met hul

voorbereiding vir vanjaar se redenaarskompetisies. Die span

is tans besig om vir 3 kompetisies voor te berei, naamlik

Radikale Redenaars, ATKV-redenaars en Oppie Tong.

Aangesien al drie feeste vanjaar digitaal plaasvind, word alle

opnames by die skool met ’n standaardagtergrond

opgeneem. Die opnames van toesprake het reeds

vandeesweek begin.

Alexander van der Merwe will be representing South Africa in the 2021 Virtual RegeneronInternational Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in the United States.

Alexander investigated whether people could differentiate between computer-generated and human art and has been selected to represent South Africa in the 2021 Virtual Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in the United States.

Alexander was inspired by an artwork produced by a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) computer algorithm, entitled Edmond de Belamy, from La Famille de Belamy, which sold for a staggering $432 500 (about R6,3 million at the time) at a Christie’s art auction in New York in October 2018. Thousands of artistic images are fed into the GAN network to “train” it to produce artistic images that are so realistic, it is difficult to tell it apart from human artwork.

“I am really interested in Artificial Intelligence, and when I read about an artwork produced by a computer selling for $432 500 at an art auction, I thought, can it therefore be that computers can use artificial intelligence to have an imagination – a characteristic that only humans should have? Answering this question has far reaching implications for how we view computers’ role in society,” said Van der Merwe.

Alexander explored whether machine learning algorithms can create art that is imaginative and creative enough to fool people into believing that the art was created by a human, using a sample size of 480 participants.

Eskom Expo Academic Director Krishnie Naidoo explained that the young scientist researched a very topical field that is rapidly expanding in the age of Artificial Intelligence – machine learning.

“AI is no longer about programming robots to do household chores. Alexander has ventured into the lesser known field of machine learning for the creative arts. Can computers learn how to reproduce human art through a set of algorithms or can human art only be created by humans? Is creativity exclusively a human competence? Can humans tell the difference between human art and computer-generated art? Will machine learning alter our constructs of the fine arts, which are humans expressing creativity, emotion, skill, and intelligence? This also has implications for the creative arts as a multi-billion dollar industry. Hence the significance of Alexander’s research goes far beyond just machine learning and art,” said Naidoo.

Eskom General Manager of Risk and Sustainability, Andrew Etzinger, said: “Eskom supports Eskom Expo for Young Scientists in highlighting the emerging trend of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics (STEAM), due to the natural and mutually beneficial relationship between science and the arts. This was explored by Alexander’s understanding of both machine learning and the creative arts, as he sets out to represent the country in the largest science fair in the world, Regeneron ISEF”.

The Regeneron ISEF event will occur in the week of 16 to 21 May 2021, and learners in grades 9 to 12 will compete for nearly R73 million in awards, prizes and scholarships. Each year, more than 1 800 young scientists from around the world earn the right to compete at Regeneron ISEF by winning a top prize at a Society for Science-affiliated local, regional, state or national science fair.

SOCIETASSocietas is back in full swing! Die Paul Roosers het hierdie

kwartaal nie net die sonskyn geniet terwyl hulle hul tyd

opgeoffer het om hulle gemeenskapsdiens te doen nie, maar

het ook terselfdertyd hulle gemeenskapsure en Superman-

balkies verdien. Learners tackled trash this term by taking part

in our weekly river clean-up, and we headed out to Strand to

pick up litter on the beach. Die Graad 10-leerders het

ook vanjaar se eerste waarderingsprojek aangepak. Gift

hampers were made and donated to the brave men

and women of Stellenbosch Fire and Rescue. 'n Nuwe projek is

ook hierdie kwartaal saam met Boots for

Life geloods. Learners donated their second-hand togs and

athletic shoes to this worthy cause that aims to make a

difference in the lives of underprivileged athletes. ’n Groot

dankie aan almal wat gehelp en bygedra het tot die sukses van

al hierdie projekte.

ATLETIEKMet 'n verkorte program weens COVID-19 moes daar buite die boks gedink word

en die graad 8's het hulle eie atletiekdag by die skool en Markötter gehad. Hierdie

was 'n geleentheid om verborge talente te ontdek en ook vir die afrigters om

die hoë kaliber atlete te identifiseer. Daar is by die HJS Top Seuns byeenkoms

deelgeneem en 3 uit die 4 toekennings vir individuele prestasies is deur PRG-

atlete gewen. Oliver Reid, Joshua Acker en Jared Africa het die aand

behoorlik gewys waartoe hulle in staat is.

Daar is 8 PRG-atlete vir die Bolandspan by ASA-kampioenskappe gekies wat

tussen 7 en 11 April by Dal Josaphat Stadium, Paarl gehou is.

JARED AFRICA

MUURBALMuurbal het hierdie kwartaal reeds op 1 Maart begin. Ons is tans besig met proewe om die skool se ranglys te bevestig om gereed te wees vir kwartaal 2, wanneer die muurbal-ligawedstryde afskop.

Sommige van ons spelers het aan die Boland-proewe deelgeneem. Die volgende spelers is opgeneem in die Boland o.16 span: Eon Rossow en Caleb Waugh. Caleb is tans nog net o.15.

Die volgende leerders is opgeneem in die Boland o/19 span: Wouter Kühn, Liam Swart en Ruben Moolman.

Hierdie leerders gaan Boland by die Inter Provincial Tournament (IPT) wat plaasvind op 26 tot 30 Junie verteenwoordig.

MOUNTAINBIKINGThe mountainbiking kicked off with a bang in 2021. Cycling is one of the sports that was least affected by Covid 19.

The PRG MTB boys were very busy and participated in various disciplines across the country. Herewith the top 5 results below:

SKAAKWe successfully hosted two tournaments:COVID-19 Chess Challenge which was hosted on 27-28 February 2021 at Markötter, was a huge success. We had to adhere to strict lockdown level 3 restrictions. Eighteen Paul Roosers participated in this tournament. The Elite-section was fiercely contested with Alexander Van der Merwe in third place. The Prestige-section was one of the strongest fields seen lately in the u/15 rating band, with Philip Coetzee winning this section. Third place was awarded to Dawid Nieuwoudt and Markus Nel in fourth place.

Die Weskaap Geslote kampioenskap is op 27 – 28 Maart gehou. Alexander van der Merwe het met ‘n sterk vertoning die vierde plek behaal en is ook as die beste junior in die kampioen-afdeling aangewys. Dawid Nieuwoudt het die Prestige-afdeling, met ‘n telling van 6 uit 6 gewen.

Achievements of the season

Dewalt Grové played in the Cubs week for the Cobras at Stellenbosch.

Dewalt Grové received his 50th cap for PRG u/19A.

Roan Hall took a hattrick vs. Parel Vallei and ended with figures of 9-3-5-10.

WATER POLOAs a result of Covid 19 related restrictions, it was very difficult to get any formal school water polo training and matches going in the first term. However, members of the PRG water polo teams were able to start their pre-season training on 15 January under the club banner. This was a legal alternative offered via Swimming South Africa, the sport’s national governing body.

While it was not possible to play inter schools games, various teams were lucky enough to be involved in various friendly club matches. This gave the boys something to train for during the week and enabled them to enhance their skills. The term culminated in the u19A side being invited to the St Andrews shield club tournament where we participated as The Winelands Schools Water Polo Club. This enabled the team to get in seven competitive matches over the weekend, a great opportunity to continue to learn and grow. The team ended in 5th place.

We are forever hopeful that we will have a school season towards the end of the third term and as such, have commenced with our winter water polo programme. Hopefully the opportunity will present itself to participate again as a school and measure ourselves against the best teams in the country.

SWIMMING

Whilst we weren’t able to have any inter school

galas due to Covid, the PRG swim team has

been training hard boosting its largest numbers

in resent years. This, accompanied by a great

set of results at the recent SA senior and junior

nationals, indicates that swimming at PRG is

healthy and competitive. We are ever hopeful

for future galas later in the year.

Verskeie Paul Roos-tennisspelers het deelgeneem aan die WP Kavaliers/Boland-tennisproewe en het die skool met trots verteenwoordig nadat hulle vir die WP Kavaliers-spanne verkies is vir ‘n wedstryd teen die Cape Metropole.

ZEST FRUIT GERRIE BERNER TENNISDie afgelope naweek was dit die jaarlikse Zest Fruit Gerrie Berner Toernooi en die Paul Roos 1ste Tennisspan was onstuitbaar. Die PRG-span het hul titel by die 16de Zest Fruit Gerrie Berner Toer met sukses verdedig en die titel vir die 4de jaar agtereenvolgend gewen deur Grey College in die finaal met 4 - 0 te verslaan!

Paul Roos is verteenwoordig deur Carl Roothman, Ernst Gouws, Stephen Claassen, Johan van Wijk, Leonardo Sola, Willem de Waal en Jake Downie.

Die skole wat vanjaar deelgeneem het, was Paul Roos, Grey College, Waterkloof, Affies, Kearsney College, Clifton High, Outeniqua, Oakdale, Stellenbosch en Paarl Boishaai.

Paul Roos het 1ste in hul groep geëindig met Clifton High 2de. In die ander groep was Grey College 1ste met Paarl Boishaai 2de. In die semifinaal het PRG vir Boishaai met 4 - 0 geklop en Grey College vir Clifton High met 4-1.

Paul Roos het dus saam met Grey College na die finaal deurgedring. In die finaal het PRG met Grey College afgereken en met 4 - 0 gewen. Die 4 punte is ingesamel deur die dubbelspunt te wen en die volgende 3 enkels-wedstryde is gewen deur Willem de Waal, Leonardo Sola en Johan van Wijk.

Paarl Boishaai het 3de gekom deur Clifton High met 4 - 0 te wen.

GHOLFPRG en Boland skolegholf was die kwartaal volstoom op koers met liga-wedstryde. Ons het 4 spanne wat weekliks wedstryde speel en goed vaar. Ons het 4 wedstryde gewen en met 1 hou teen HJS Paarl vasgeval.

Vrydagmiddae is daar ‘n oefengroep van + 10 spelers wat na Devonvalegaan om oefenrondtes as deel van PRG Gholf te speel. Van hierdie spelers sal mettertyd soos hulle vorder ook in spanne opgeneem word.

PRG se nuwe Gr8-gholfspelers vaar baie goed. Nicolas en Andries van der Vyver is in die o.15 WP-span opgeneem en Rynhardt van Zyl in die Boland o.15-span!

PRG skryf ook 4 spanne (16 spelers) in vir die Boland Gholf Skole-kampioenskappe wat op 12 April by Boschenmeer gholfklub plaasgevind het. PRG se 1ste span, Jack Brugman, Daniel Joubert, Nicolas van der Vyver en Gerard Hartman behaal ‚n derde plek in die spanafdeling! Jack Brugman en Alix Engelbrecht behaal ook n tweede plek in die individuele afdeling.
