Read the passage below carefully and answer the questions that follow.

The dugong is a slow, graceful creature that lives under the sea. It lives in shallow tropical

waters. It is largely found in the Great Barrier Reef, Australia. Dugongs are believed to have come

from North Africa. They are also known as ‘sea cows’ because they graze on sea grass on the ocean

floor.

The dugong can live up to 70 years. Its body is grey and bronze. It has a darker colour on top

than below. Its head is round with small eyes and a large fleshy snout. The dugong swims slowly

using its whale-liked fluked tail. Its front flippers are used for balancing and turning in the water. The

dugong surfaces to breathe every 8 minutes. It grazes on sea grass and marine algae. As it has poor

eye sught, it finds sea grass using coarse bristle that cover its snout. However, it has a sharp hearing.

It communicates with many sounds like soft squeaks, chirps and loud barking sounds.

Over the years, the number of dugongs is becoming less. Dugongs are dying off due to the

loss of sea grass from pollution. Therefore to protect these creatures, 16 dugongs sanctuaries have

been set up in the southern Great Barrier Reef, Australia.
