PREFACE
This handbook is designed to serve as a reference for parents, students, and faculty of Our Lady of the Snows School. It is
written to fulfill the needs of those concerned with providing a fine education within our Catholic tradition.
Familiarity with its contents will facilitate the everyday functioning of our school and enable us to ensure the continuation
of an excellent education within a Christian atmosphere.
SCHOOL PHILOSOPHY AND MISSION
Continuing the legacy of The Sisters of Saint Joseph, our mission at Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Academy
is to move with the Spirit to bring about God’s reign and seek to promote justice, to live lives of non-violence
and to respond to the needs of our time – uniting all in God’s love. We believe it is our responsibility to
recognize and develop the unique gifts of each child entrusted to us as we welcome children of all religions and
cultures to our school community, and we reach out to them with understanding and respect.
Our vision is the preservation of our strong Christian environment and high academic standards – an
environment that fosters the spiritual, academic, social, and physical development of the individual.
Spiritually, we deepen the awareness of God’s presence by helping our students know Jesus. Our school
stresses personal responsibility as well as concern for others. Programs and activities throughout the year
encourage students to become involved in the loving service of others in need.
Academically, we adhere to the current standards set forth by New York State and the Diocese of Brooklyn.
The physical and social needs of our students are considered throughout the day based on their ages, to
insure that we both challenge and attend to these important areas of development.
We will also continue to work conscientiously to realize our ideals in a community that are contemporary,
enthusiastic, unbiased, and open to the future.
POLICY OF NON-DISCRIMINATION
Our Lady of the Snows School admits students of either sex or any race, color, national or ethnic origin to all rights,
privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school.
Our Lady of the Snows School does not discriminate on the basis of sex, race, color, national or ethnic origin in the
administration of educational policies, admission policies, and athletic or other school administered programs.
Effective 2016-2017 School Year
Dear Parents & Guardians,
You’ve all read the headlines and seen the news stories: food allergies are a growing concern in schools across America.
Millions of children - children who are perfectly healthy and normal in every other way – must watch every single bite
they eat, or risk suffering a severe or even life threatening reaction. In fact, food allergies claim an estimated 150 lives
and are responsible for more than 125,000 emergency room visits each year. A major health issue such as this must be
taken very seriously, and it has always been the policy of this school to make the safety and well-being of our students
our top priority.
Many students in our school have serious peanut allergies - the food allergy that claims more lives each year than any
other. A child with a serious peanut allergy can suffer a reaction merely by touching a peanut-containing food.
Therefore, we are putting the following safety guidelines into effect:
- Please do not send any peanuts, peanut butter or foods containing peanuts to school. This includes all snacks
and lunches.
- Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Academy will be a peanut free school.
This is a learning process for all of us, but we trust that you understand how deeply important it is to respect and adhere
to these guidelines. If throughout the course of the year you have any questions or concerns about food-allergy-related
issues, please do not hesitate to contact either one of us.
Wishing you and your family a safe and healthy school year.
Sincerely,
Mr. Joseph Venticinque Ms. Nellye Estevez
Principal Assistant Principal
I. SCHOOL ADMINISTRATIVE POLICIES and PROCEDURES
ARRIVAL
Students in Grades K-8 should arrive in the school yard between 8:00 and 8:10 a.m. Parents are not permitted in the yard.
From 7:30 a.m to 8:45 a.m. 258th Street is closed except for school buses. On 259th Street between Union Turnpike
and 80th Avenue there is a "Stop and Drop" policy in effect from 7:55 a.m to 8:10 a.m. Cars should enter from Union
Turnpike and exit onto 80th Avenue.
The designated area to drop off students is from the school yard gate to the convent gate. Parking is not permitted on
either side of 259th Street. Parents should not park in the bus stop on Union Turnpike.
Nursery and Pre-K students enter the building on 258th Street at the door near the schoolyard when the teacher opens it at
8:20 a.m. Parents are asked to stand away from the doors and fence near the building so students may proceed into the
building from the school yard.
ATTENDANCE
Under the School Laws of New York State, parents are responsible for their children's regular attendance and punctuality.
ABSENCES: When children are absent, parents should do the following:
1. Parents should call the school office (718 343-1346) before 8:00 a.m. to report their child absent. Please leave a short
message — name, grade, reason for absence.
2. When the child returns, a note of explanation and date(s) of absence(s) must be given to the teacher. Such notes are
important and are kept on file as per State mandate. It is an illegal absence if a child remains out of school except for
illness or a serious family matter. (Please use the form at the end of this handbook.)
3. When a child is absent, arrangements should be made with a "classroom buddy" to obtain homework and class work.
During a lengthy illness, schoolwork can be obtained by contacting the homeroom teacher.
4. Please notify the nurse (718 347-5134) of any fracture or sprain. A doctor's note or completed orthopedic form should
accompany the student upon returning to school.
Excessive absences are a matter for consultation between the homeroom teacher and the parents.
Parents should not send a child to school if s/he has had a fever, or has vomited within the past 24 hours, has a rash
not seen by the doctor and reviewed by our nurse, or shows any other symptoms of illness.
No child in attendance will be permitted to leave school without a prior, written request signed by a parent and submitted
to the school office for approval. An authorized adult must sign the early dismissal book and pick up the child.
Should a child become ill during the day, the parent or the person designated as person to call in case of emergency will
be contacted. An authorized adult must come to the school to pick up the child and sign the early dismissal book.
LATENESSES
We ask parents to please help us in this regard. Habitual lateness forms a pattern that lasts through life. A child who is
consistently late causes disruption to a class already in progress. A student in grades K - 8 is considered late when s/he
is not in the building/school yard by 8:10 a.m.
A late student may enter class after signing the late book and obtaining a late pass from the school office.
GRADES 4-8 - FIVE (5) lateness’s will result in a detention until 4:10 p.m. Parents will be informed of the date
that the detention is to be served.
PLEASE NOTE: If the City School Bus is late, your child will be marked late without penalty.
CANCELLATION OF SCHOOL
If there is a possibility of school being closed because of weather conditions, please go to the school website at
www.OLSSCHOOLFP.org OR WWW.OLSCAFP.ORG
1. If All New York City Public Schools are closed.
- All schools in the Diocese of Brooklyn and Queens are closed.
- Then Our Lady of the Snows School is closed.
Please do NOT call the school, convent, or the rectory. General rule: if a student comes to school, s/he stays for the
day unless instructed otherwise by the National Weather Service or Civil Defense.
CUSTODY ISSUES
Divorced or separated parents must file a court-certified copy of the custody section of the divorce or separation decree
with the principal's office. The school will not be held responsible for failing to honor custodial arrangements without
proper documentation in the student's file.
CHANGE OF ADDRESS OR TELEPHONE NUMBER
It is very important that every student's records be kept up-to-date regarding address, telephone number (cell, home and
work), and person to contact in case of emergency. Please notify the school immediately of any changes during the school
year.
DISMISSAL
Children in grades K-4 will be dismissed by their teachers to the schoolyard on Union Turnpike, students in grades 5-6
will be dismissed on 259th Street, and students in grades 7-8 will be dismissed on 258th Street. Nursery and Pre-K
students will be dismissed from the door on 258th Street near the school yard. The office will try its best but cannot be
responsible for relaying messages regarding who will be picking up a child or if s/he is to take the bus or not. Parents
should write a note to the classroom teacher if there are any changes.
Parents of students in grades K-4 should wait in the schoolyard for students. Parking is not permitted on either side of
258th Street or in the School or Convent parking lots. On rainy days, the same dismissal policy applies.
Parents are never allowed to double-park while waiting for their children. Students should not be encouraged to jaywalk
or dash between cars. Everyone should listen to and obey the instructions of the crossing guard and the school safety
patrol. Orange safety cones are put out on 258th Street at 80th Avenue and at Union Turnpike/258th St. between 2:30 and
3:15 p.m. please do not move them or drive around them. They are there for the safety of all pupils and parents.
PLEASE NOTE: If a student is enrolled in any after-school activity, s/he may not leave early without a parent
excuse note.

SUPPLIES
School supplies are sold in the school office daily. A price list is available in school office. Every attempt should be made
to send in exact change. Anything to do with offensive language or pictures is banned in this school. Therefore, any
unsuitable paraphernalia such as book covers, clothing, pencil cases, pens/pencils, folders, schoolbags, lunch boxes, toys,
magazines, books, etc., bearing the above stated cannot be brought to school.
TELEPHONE USAGE
Students may only use school telephones with consent of the administration or nurse. They are not permitted to call for
forgotten homework, projects, gym uniform, etc. Use of electronic devices and cell phones by students during the school
day is not permitted, and they will be confiscated if used at the wrong time (see cell phone section). The school office
cannot be responsible for getting messages to students except for family emergencies.
TRANSPORTATION
The New York City Office of Pupil Transportation has set the following requirements for eligibility for transportation for
students in grades K-8. (Chancellor's Regulation A: 801)
Distance Between
Grade: School and Pupil's Home: Generally Eligible For:
K-2 1/2 mile or more Free transportation
3-6 1 mile or more Free transportation

7-8 1 1/2 miles or more Full-Fare Metro Card
7-8 1/2 mile to 1 1/2 miles Half Fare Metro Card
A Metro Card is provided for use on public transportation only. The Metro Card Program is sponsored by the MTA, not
the Board of Education, and therefore is subject to change without notice. If a student is not taking the school bus home
on a particular day, written notification from home must be submitted to the homeroom teacher that morning.
PLEASE NOTE: If a student does not conduct her/himself properly on a bus, the student may have their riding
privileges suspended by the school administration. In such cases, the student’s parent will become responsible for
seeing that her/his child gets to and from school safely.
VACATIONS
Parents are asked not to take children out of school for family vacations. Please check the school calendar you receive in
September and schedule vacations for the long periods of time when school is closed. If an extreme family emergency
arises that necessitates an absence from school, please inform us in writing as soon as possible. A yearly tentative
calendar is posted on the school website for your convenience.
VISITORS TO SCHOOL
Class time is very important to both students and teachers. Therefore, interruptions should be seldom and only with proper
notice. As you enter the school there is a sign posted that all visitors must stop in the school office. The principal will
determine whether or not an individual will be given permission to visit a classroom. Appointments with teachers can be
arranged by writing to the teacher so that they can be scheduled at a mutually convenient time.
FOR SECURITY PURPOSES No student or anyone else should ever prop a door open or allow anyone access to
the building by any other door other than the main entrance.
II. SCHOOL FINANCIAL OBLIGATIONS
Our Lady of the Snows School relies upon tuition and fees to meet its financial obligations. Prompt payment of tuition and
fees is therefore critical to the school. Please note that report cards, records and transcripts will only be released when all
accounts are paid in full. Parents and guardians are considered as agreeing to all financial regulations and obligations of
the school when they enroll a student. Tuition is a yearly fee divided into 10 convenient payments.
Failure to pay tuition in a timely manner adversely impacts our entire schools’ ability to provide a
quality education. If tuition payments are not up to date by the first and/or second marking period, the
student will be asked to transfer to another school. Students may not be eligible to participate in school
trips, social events, school activities, graduation events, etc. if tuition payments are not up to date. A
student will not be permitted to return to Our Lady of the Snows School for the next school year if all
financial obligations are not satisfied.
TUITION AND FEES: 2017 - 2018 - Grades Nursery - 8 is posted on the school website. It is found at
https://olscafp.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/8.pdf
For the convenience of our families, the yearly tuition is broken down into ten (10) monthly payments, due on the first of
each month either by check or money order (NO CASH ACCEPTED) as follows:
Payment # Payment Due Payment # Payment Due
1 June 1 6 January 1
2 September 1 7 February 1
3 October 1 8 March 1
4 November 1 9 April 1
5 December 1 10 May 1
Any tuition payment not received by the payment due date will be subject to the following late fees: Grades Nursery - 8 $25 if not received by the 7
th of each month.
In order to receive your child’s report card at the end of each trimester, the following payments need to be received:
December – 4 payments March – 8 payments June – Tuition paid in full
If you anticipate a problem meeting the tuition payment, please inform the school in writing or meet with Mr. Venticinque
prior to a missed payment.
All families (Nursery Full day to 8) are required to do service or pay $50.00 extra each month. In addition, all families are
required to fulfill their Parent Service Commitment or pay a fee depending on the day the service is missed. Any returned
checks will incur a $20 processing fee. After two checks have been returned by the bank because of insufficient funds or
other reasons, only money orders will be accepted for future payments. Post-dated checks will not be accepted. As of May
15h, personal checks will no longer be accepted for the current school year, only bank checks and money orders.
By enrolling your child you are entering into an agreement to pay the total tuition charged based on the fee assessed. The
expectation is that tuition will be paid in full by May 1. Tuition will be charged on prorated under the discretion of the
principal and board of directors.
FUND RAISING
In order to keep tuition increases at a moderate pace, fund raising is a necessity. Each family is required to do some type
of service for our school according to the Parent Service Commitment Form signed at registration. In addition, throughout
the school year, there are several optional fund-raisers sponsored by the school, the Home School Association, and the
Student Council. It is expected that each family will support these fundraisers to the best of their ability and use their Fare
Share money for H.S.A. sponsored events.
III. SCHOOL HEALTH PROCEDURES
ACCIDENTS IN SCHOOL
In the event of any accident involving a student, a report must be filed. Any witness involved should submit a signed
report. All students are enrolled in a student accident insurance plan.
INSURANCE
School accident insurance is paid for by the school at the beginning of the school year. The insurance protects pupils
traveling to and from school, on school sponsored and supervised trips and while in gym class. The coverage is from
September 15, 2016 to September 15, 2017. Parents are encouraged to check their policies for children's coverage and
take advantage of a voluntary 24 hour coverage plan. If interested call Willis Insurance Company at (212) 915-7740.
DOCTOR AND DENTIST APPOINTMENTS
Parents are expected to make every effort to schedule doctor and dentist appointments outside of school hours. However,
when this is not possible, students will be excused for these special appointments. A note must be brought to the principal
in the morning by the student asking permission for the student to be signed out early. The parent must sign the early
dismissal book when picking up the student.
EMERGENCY INFORMATION (STUDENT)
Emergency Information forms are kept in both the school office and the medical room. It is extremely important that we
have an up-to-date telephone number to reach one of the parents. Most hospitals will not treat minor patients unless a
parent or guardian is actually present to give permission. Any allergies, daily medication, or known medical problem
should be noted on the bottom line (in red ink) of the Emergency Information form and the school nurse should be
informed in a separate letter ASAP.
EMERGENCY CONTACT PROCEDURES
In the event of an accident, first aid is administered immediately and every effort is made to contact the family. If family
contact cannot be made, the family physician is called. If the family physician is not available, other family, guardians, or
individual contacts (as provided on Emergency Contact Card) are called. The success of this procedure depends upon
accurate and up-to-date information. Please notify the school administration to report a change of family physician or
home or business telephone numbers.
IMMUNIZATION
No child will be admitted to any school in New York City unless the child has received proper immunizations. When new
children apply, verification of immunizations for measles, mumps, rubella (MMR), diphtheria, polio, HIB, HepB, and
Varicella is required, along with dates and results of TB(Mantoux) and lead screening tests. All children born after
January 1, 1994 are required to receive the Tdap immunization upon entering 6th grade.
MEDICATION
If a student needs to take medication during school hours, the nurse must be notified. Medication cannot be administered
UNLESS the nurse has a completed 504 Form on file. The 504 Form must be completed by your child's physician and
signed by the parent. No medication will be accepted or stored in the school without the proper paperwork. Please note
that medication cannot be given for episodic illnesses, such as a 10-day course of antibiotics. Medications are dispensed
for chronic illnesses only. Please contact the school nurse should you need the 504 Form. (718 347-5134). A new form
must be submitted every year. Every effort should be made to dispense medication before the child comes to school
and/or after the child returns home. Students are not permitted to carry medicine such as Tylenol or any prescription
medication in their lunch box, school bag or on their person.
IV. SCHOOL SAFETY PROCEDURES
CRISIS MANAGEMENT PLAN
Our Lady of the Snows has in place a "Crisis Management Plan" for extreme emergencies. From time to time, the
students, faculty, and staff will practice these important safety precautions during the school day. Misbehaving during
these drills is a serious infraction.
Evacuation The safety and welfare of our students and staff continue to be our highest priority. As we have communicated to you before, we practice safety drills throughout the year to help staff and students understand emergency procedures. We want to make our families aware that in case of an emergency where it is necessary to evacuate the building, our students will be provided shelter at a neighboring school. In the event of such an emergency, we would let parents know that their children are at the evacuation site through our parent alert system on OptionC. Our evacuation site is: Middle School 172 81-14 257
th Street
Floral Park, NY 11004
EMERGENCY PROCEDURES
In emergency situations, directions would be given over the public address system by the administrator on how to
proceed.
— If it is necessary to evacuate the building, the designated fire routes would be followed unless directed otherwise by the
administration.
— If it is necessary to lock down, a coded message would be made over the public address system by the administration.
In such an eventuality, all students should be in a locked room, the bells would be shut off, administrators would clear the
halls, and the police would be notified. A coded all clear announcement would be made by the school administrator once
it was determined that the emergency situation was over.
— If it was necessary to go to a safe area away from the school, the fire evacuation procedure would be used but
instead of remaining outside the school, our students and staff would proceed to a designated safe area.
FIRE DRILLS
Fire drills at regular intervals are required by law and are an important safety precaution. It is essential that, when the first
signal is given, everyone obeys orders promptly and clears the building by the prescribed route as quickly as possible. The
teacher in each classroom will give the students instructions. No running or talking will be permitted during the fire drill.
No one is to return to the building until the signal is given. Misbehaving during a fire drill is a serious infraction.
V. SCHOOL UNIFORM REGULATIONS
The primary focus of an OLS education is the spiritual, moral and emotional development of the student. A uniform code
has been established to allow students to focus their attention on their primary educational responsibilities, to establish a
serious and professional atmosphere for learning, and to teach an appropriate and modest manner of dress.
A neat appearance and dress according to the school regulations is required at all times in school and traveling to and from
school. Students not properly dressed for school will not, at the discretion of the administration, be permitted to attend
class and, the parent will be contacted to bring appropriate clothing.
Students are not permitted to wear a long sleeve shirt under short sleeve polo. Only white t-shirts may be worn under a polo.
Both students and parents are responsible for the uniform code being adhered to, and for understanding completely the
reasons for its existence. Repeated violations of these regulations will result in suspension until such time as the student's
parents have been to the school personally to see the Principal. The Principal reserves the right to make the final decision
as to whether an article of clothing meets the standards established and to update/change the uniform code at any time.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Physical education classes are mandated by State Law. Attendance is compulsory unless a doctor's note certifying
disability is presented to the Gym Teacher/principal. Our Lady of the Snows School believes that physical education is an
important part of the educational experience. The development and maintenance of a healthy body is essential for physical
well-being and good mental health.
We also believe that attitude development is an important part of education. We attempt to create an atmosphere for the
development of leadership, sportsmanship, and congeniality through our physical education program. Students must wear
the uniform prescribed for gym classes. Boys and girls wear sneakers, white socks, regulation navy blue shorts, and the
regulation grey t-shirt both with school logo. Students wear their gym uniforms to school on gym days. In cooler weather,
navy blue sweat pants may be worn and a navy sweatshirt may be worn over the light blue polo shirt. ONLY the school
logo may appear on the sweat clothes. The CYO logo is not part of the OLS uniform.
No student will be admitted to class or be allowed to participate in gym class unless s/he is in proper uniform. We
recommend that the student's last name be placed in large letters inside all gym clothes, especially the sweatshirt.
VI. SCHOOL ACADEMIC POLICIES and PROCEDURES
BOOKS
All books should be covered at all times with neat, clean book covers, and should be carried to and from school in a
waterproof carrier of suitable size. Rolling backpacks are not permitted. As a general rule, students are not permitted to
make any marks in a textbook. Lost or damaged books must be paid for by the student.
HOMEWORK
Homework is generally assigned as supplemental work, to make up incomplete assignments or as research which cannot
be completed in school. The actual experience of doing homework independently is a lesson of value to the student. The
amount of homework necessary will vary according to subject, type of class, grade level, and the individual student.
Parents can assist by providing a quiet place to work free from distractions, establishing a time schedule, and showing an
interest in the work and its completion. Homework is given four (4) nights a week and at the teacher's discretion on
weekends. Homework may not be done in school. Each student, in grades 4-8, will receive a planner in September to use
throughout the year. All other students should have a durable assignment pad or notebook to copy down homework, and
parents should check the planner or assignment pad each night.
The length of time spent on homework each night (including studying every night) should be as follows:
Grades 1 - 3 30 - 45 minutes
Grades 4 - 6 45 - 90 minutes
Grades 7 - 8 90 - 120 minutes
Acceptable assignments are neat and carefully completed. Parents should not correct the work or improve it in any way.
Projects should be written or typed according to the directions given by the teacher using the student's own vocabulary.
Plagiarism, either from a book or computer program, is not acceptable. It is the responsibility of the parent to check
notebooks and workbooks weekly.
INTERIM REPORTS/DEFICIENCY REPORTS
Midway through the first and second trimesters, a report is sent home to parents of students in Grades K – 8 to indicate
your child's strength or weakness in each subject area.
MARKING CODE
An explanation of the marking code is given on the Report Card. In general, it can be summarized as follows:
A+ = 97-100
A = 93-96
B+ = 89-92
B = 85-88
C+= 81-84
C = 77-80
D+ = 74-76
D = 70-73
F = Below 70 is a failing grade
Honors at graduation (Gold Cord) are awarded to students who maintain a 95 Average, with no mark below 90 in Grades
7 and 8, with satisfactory conduct, effort, and a minimum of "3" in minor subjects. Students in Grades 7 and 8 must count
Spanish as part of the requirements for honors.
PARENT CONFERENCES
Parents or guardians must attend the general class meeting held in September where the teacher explains class procedures
and expectations. At the end of the first and second trimesters, individual conferences will be arranged for the teacher to
report on the child's progress. Parents must contact the teacher with a brief note to arrange a conference at any other time
during the school year. The principal will not meet with any parent unless the parent has first met with the teacher. A
conference will then be arranged with the parent, teacher, and principal.
VII. “OTHER” STUDENT PROCEDURES/POLICIES:
BIRTHDAYS
We ask parents to cooperate in celebrating your child's birthday in school by using the birthday pass provided by the
teacher. A treat can be sent into school that is wrapped and will be given out at the end of the day. This would include a
small toy, pencil or a fun item. Students are NOT permitted to have fast food (pizza, Burger King, McDonald's, etc.),
lollipops, goody-bags, soda, or juice. No organized birthday party or visits will be allowed.
TREATS
From time to time, the school has given students treats on special days, such as bagels. It is the responsibility of the
parent to contact the teacher if, due to an allergy or any other reason, you do not want your child to participate.
LUNCH
Students eat lunch in the White Room or the classroom (Grades N-8). In order to promote an overall sense of fairness,
parents may not bring "Fast Food" (pizza, Burger King, McDonalds, etc.) into school or the classroom on any given day
for any children.
As a general rule, lunch should be brought to school with your child in the morning. Students may have a drink only
from a thermos, water bottle or a juice box. Glass bottles, jars, cans, soda, or plastic squeeze bottles are not permitted.
Plastic bags or wax paper may be used. These rules are necessary to comply with New York City recycling laws. Students
are not permitted in the bathrooms at lunch time. If there is an emergency, the student should come to the office.
In good weather students go to the school yard Monday through Friday. Students are not permitted to run in the school
yard. A game of tag (and/or other physical contact game) is not an acceptable activity in the yard. Students who do not
follow the rules will have to stand by the wall, sit at the office and will not be permitted to play.
There may be consequences to marking codes such as the following:
• receiving a grade of "zero" on any assignment which has been copied or where a
student permits another student to copy.
• receiving a grade of "zero" on any assignment which has been plagiarized from
another source.
• receiving a grade of "zero" on any quiz or examination on which a student has
cheated.
• Forgery, lying, or other deceptions will result in the need for a parent conference,
detention, suspension, or in grave situations, at the discretion of School Administration,
expulsion from the school.
RECYCLING
In accordance with New York City law, recycling containers for paper, plastic, metal, and juice boxes will be available in
each classroom, as well as a regular trash container. We expect everyone to use the proper container at all times for
disposing of waste. Students who do not comply will be asked to stay after school and perform community service to help
improve the school.
VIII. EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES/SUPPORT SERVICES
Clubs
Extra-curricular clubs will be offered in 10/8 week cycles. Many different clubs will be offered across all grade levels.

learning process. All students are expected to participate. However, students can be denied participation in a field trip
if s/he fails to meet academic or behavior requirements. A schedule (date, departure time, return time, and cost) will be
sent home prior to the trip. Each student must have a signed permission slip from his/her parent in order to participate in
the class field trip. Verbal permission from a parent is unacceptable. The only acceptable permission slip is the one
provided by the teacher or in this handbook If you misplace the one sent home by the teacher, copy this and send it in with
your child prior to the day of the trip.

absence will be recorded.
OUR LADY OF THE SNOWS CATHOLIC ACADEMY CODE OF CONDUCT
Learning can best take place in a safe and orderly environment. Our Lady of the Snows School has a long-standing set of
expectations for conduct on school property and at school functions. These expectations are based on the principles of
civility, mutual respect, citizenship, character, tolerance, honesty, and integrity. These expectations are the foundation for
creating a climate where we can accomplish our mission, “To provide a quality education that prepares all children for a
successful future.”
The school recognizes the need to define clearly these expectations for acceptable conduct on school property, to identify
the possible consequence of unacceptable conduct, and to ensure that discipline when necessary is administered promptly
and fairly.
The “Code of Conduct” is designed to promote safety through high standards of behavior, and it is important that you and
your student become familiar with our school policies. The “Code of Conduct” includes all policies related to student
conduct and discipline. There are serious consequences for breaking rules of conduct, and these consequences are outlined
in the following pages of the OLS Student Code of Conduct. These policies have been modeled on the Diocese of
Brooklyn Anti-Bullying Policy, the NYC Department of Education Citywide Standards of Intervention and Discipline
Measures and the NYS Code of Conduct guidelines and other sources.
We ask that you review the OLS Student Code of Conduct as a family and become familiar with our policies.
Any behavior, which is viewed by the school administration as detrimental to the education process, to the safety of
other persons, or to the reputation of Our Lady of the Snows School, could be considered grounds for serious
disciplinary action and may result in suspension or expulsion. The principal is the final recourse in all disciplinary
situations and may waive any and all regulations for just cause at her discretion.
Honesty and integrity are cornerstones of the human community. As a Catholic community, Our Lady of the Snows School students realize it is only through honesty and integrity, combined with tolerance and compassion, that they can lead each other
on an honorable Christian path. With this in mind, the students must pledge to stand strong in their fundamental commitment to:
Honesty: Honesty in the area of academics means doing your own work and properly crediting the work of others. Any
behavior that compromises the integrity of a student's work is dishonest and constitutes cheating. Cheating involves giving
or receiving unauthorized assistance on an exam or assignment, copying others' work, misusing calculators, study aids or
data.
Plagiarism is a form of cheating that involves, but is not limited to, copying words, ideas, opinions or arrangements of
materials from publications or the Internet without proper and accepted citation.
Truthfulness: Telling the truth means being open, honest and not attempting to deceive peers, parents, teachers and school
personnel.
Respectfulness: Respecting others means having proper regard for others and their property. Proper regard involves being
considerate, courteous, and conscientious in our words and actions.
Tolerance: Tolerance means, if not understanding, recognizing and respecting the difference in others beliefs, customs,
practices and individuality
IX. STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES [CODE OF CONDUCT]
ANTI-BULLYING/HARASSMENT
Bullying, bias-based harassment /intimidation are intentional, repeated, hurtful acts (physical, verbal, written) committed by one
or more persons towards another person or persons. It usually involves an actual or perceived imbalance of power which can be
physical, emotional or verbal. The behaviors include but are not limited to:
Physical: physical violence, stalking, threats, aggressive or menacing gestures, exclusion from peer groups which is
intended to humiliate or isolate the target (relational bullying)
Verbal: taunts, teasing, derogatory language, derogatory jokes, name calling, slurs, spreading rumors
Written: written or graphic material including graffiti containing comments or stereotypes that are electronically written and
transmitted via internet, social messaging sites, blogs, instant messaging, text messages, cell phone, and webcams. This
would also include forwarding such messages if received. This generally constitutes “cyber bullying”.

CELL PHONE and OTHER ELECTRONIC DEVICES
I-Pods, I-Phones, Blackberry phones and any similar audio/visual units interfere with the daily operation of school. The school
cannot be responsible for lost, misplaced or stolen items. Therefore it is prudent to leave these devices at home if not needed for
any lessons. The use of a cell phone in school during school hours is not permitted. If your child needs to carry a turned off cell
phone you must complete the CELL PHONE REQUEST form at the end of this handbook.
It is understood that all essential calls must be made from the school office, that the cell phone may never be used during school
hours, must be turned off at all times, and must be kept in the school bag in the closet during the school day.
Failure to adhere to the above stated rules will result in the confiscation of the cell phone.
The use of cameras (cellphone or tablet , iPad) or video equipment in the building requires the permission of the
administration.
If a cell phone goes off, is found in a student’s possession, or is being used in any way, they will be required to serve
2 days detention. A parent or guardian must come up to get the phone from the principal’s office.
CONDUCT IN THE SCHOOL BUILDING
Students are expected to maintain a standard of behavior and decorum that reflects the philosophy and mission of the
school. All members of Our Lady of the Snows community work to foster a deep sense of respect and appreciation in our
students for the uniqueness and talents of others. Most importantly, students are challenged to recognize God in each
other. Therefore, all their words and actions must reflect this spirit which enables our community to flourish. Students'
conduct must always show respect and concern for their teachers and fellow students. In addition, all students' actions
should indicate a serious attitude toward learning and an appropriate sense of focus and study. Students' behavior must
follow a pattern that contributes to the positive and productive atmosphere of the school: yelling, pushing or shoving,
running or loitering in the corridors and lavatories during the day is prohibited. Inappropriate displays of affection are
considered in poor taste and are not acceptable in the building or on school grounds. Students are expected to accord all
teachers and staff members the respect that their position demands. Belligerence or insubordination are among the most
serious offenses and are therefore totally unacceptable. Engaging in verbal abuse, profanity or obscenity, including
inappropriate gestures, demonstrates an extreme lack of respect and are therefore not tolerated. The unauthorized taking of
the property of another (stealing) will result in the need for a parent conference, detention, suspension, or expulsion from
the school.
CONDUCT OUTSIDE THE SCHOOL
Students who attend Our Lady of the Snows School are expected to exhibit behavior in keeping with Catholic values at all
times. Conduct in any community public buildings, on streets, buses, at athletic contests and after school functions must
always exhibit respect for the rights of others.
CONDUCT ON THE INTERNET
Students who attend Our Lady of the Snows School are expected to exhibit behavior in keeping with Catholic values at all
times. Students remain responsible and accountable for their actions for the use of communication devices and social
networks. Bullying and harassment, including emails, text, social postings and video/photo postings are unacceptable.
Internet and cell phone services, as well as the use of social networking and media sites (e.g. Face-book, Twitter) are to be
used in accordance with Our Lady of the Snows School philosophy of respect.
BLOGGING
The term BLOGGING means the keeping of an online log or journal. All bloggers must be at least 16 years of age;
however, there is no way to ensure that persons under the minimum age will not have access. Safety of our students is
paramount. They can and will be held responsible for things they write about OLS that can be detrimental to our
reputation. We reserve the right to discipline students for off-school conduct that is untrue about staff and other students.
Any violation of the Student Code of Conduct is an offense toward oneself and the other members of the school
community. In all cases a student violating the Code will be called upon by the teacher, administrator, or staff
member and subject to discipline.
The school reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to determine and assess an appropriate response to conduct
(whether comprised of an individual act or a series or pattern of acts or conduct), up to and including suspension,
expulsion and refusal to re-invite a student to return for an ensuing academic year. Nothing in this Code of
Conduct, the Student Handbook, or any other written or verbal statement from the school or any of its employees,
representatives or agents is intended in any way to limit or restrict the school’s ability, authority and discretion to
determine an appropriate response to any conduct on the part of any student.
GUM CHEWING
Chewing gum is inappropriate in an educational institution. Also, when gum is not disposed of in a garbage receptacle, it
has damaging effects on property. Therefore, no gum chewing is permitted in school or on the school grounds.
LOITERING
Loitering interferes with the rights of others and is therefore unacceptable on any block or corner near the school and/or
church. Violators will be subjected to any disciplinary action deemed necessary and appropriate by the school.
VANDALISM
Basic to the philosophy governing Our Lady of the Snows School is an intrinsic respect for the rights of others. Students
are urged to exercise this respect with regard to school property. Each student should realize that any vandalism, including
graffiti done to school property is directly related to increased costs. Any student vandalizing the school's property,
including lavatories, will be responsible for the repair-costs and subject to suspension and/or dismissal.
DISCIPLINARY PROCEDURES/PENALTIES
Disciplinary action, when necessary, will be firm, fair, and consistent so as to be the most effective in changing student
behavior. In determining the appropriate disciplinary action, school personnel authorized to impose disciplinary penalties
will consider the following:
1. The student's age.
2. The nature of the offense and the circumstances,
which led to the offense.
3. The student's prior disciplinary record.
4. The effectiveness of other forms of discipline.
5. Information from parents, teachers and/or others, as
appropriate
6. Other extenuating circumstances.
As a general rule, discipline will be progressive. This means that a student's first violation will usually merit a lighter
penalty than subsequent violations.
Penalties
Students who are found to have violated the school's "Code of Conduct" may be subject to the following penalties, either
alone or in combination at the discretion of School Administration.
1. Oral warning
2. Written warning
3. Written notification to parent
4. Detention
5. Suspension from transportation – Director of
Transportation, Principal
6. Suspension from athletic participation – Gym
Teacher, Principal
7. Suspension from social or extracurricular activities
8. Suspension of other privileges

10. In-school suspension
11. Removal from classroom by teacher
12. Short-term (3 days or less) suspension from school
13. Restitution for stolen or damaged property
14. Expulsion
STUDENTS WITH IESP
The admission process for students into Our Lady of the Snows School in the Diocese of Brooklyn, who have already
been identified as having special needs, begins with a review of the students’ records. Before admitting a student the
school evaluates the students’ needs to determine if the school has the ability to provide appropriate resources and
support. The administration of the school reviews the documentation, conducts an interview, and makes admission
decisions. The IEP must be presented at time of initial admission interview.
VOLUNTEERS
Our Lady of the Snows School has been greatly assisted by many wonderful and generous volunteers. Volunteer services
are an invaluable aid that helps us to be a well and alive community of believers working together for the good of all. All
volunteers must sign the Register Book when entering and leaving the building. The Register Book is located outside the
office. Thank you and God bless you.

As a parent or guardian of the above named student. I have read the Our Lady of the Snows School acceptable usage

has taken precautions to screen controversial or objectionable material. However, I realize that it is impossible to ensure
that no objectionable material can be accessed and I will not hold Our Lady of the Snows School responsible for material

IPad, NOOK & E-READER USE
We have created this policy collaboratively as a staff based on our sincere desire to balance a variety of issues created by
the use of personal technology in school. We recognize the inherent usefulness of devices such as eReaders and tablet
computers. It is our goal to ensure the ability of students to use them for legitimate academic purposes, while avoiding the
potential for distraction and abuse.
1. All e-Readers & Tablets, I-Pads , smart phones must have cellular and network capabilities disabled (turned off) while the device is at school. 2. e-Readers& Tablets must be used at appropriate times in accordance with teacher instructions. The e-Reader must not
be a distraction for the student or those around him/her nor be a source of any classroom disruption.
3. e-Readers & Tablets are not to be used during lunch, middle-school breaks, or during playground/recess time.
4. The student is responsible for knowing how to properly and effectively use their e-Readers & Tablets.
5. Any apps, websites , books, or any other content that are not in good taste will risk students permissions to use devices.
I agree to abide by the policies of Our Lady of the Snows School Student Handbook & Acceptable Use Policy. I
understand that the School reserves the right to access, review, monitor, audit, log and intercept computer/technology use
at all times and without notice. I understand that the use of technology at Our Lady of the Snows School is a privilege that
can be revoked at the discretion of the school’s faculty & administration.
Parents/Guardians by agreeing to the terms of this handbook, you recognize that you are solely responsible for the content
on their child’s eReader or tablet. Books and other digital media must comply with grade level literature guidelines and
the student Technology Acceptable Use Policy. Parents are solely responsible for checking this content. Failure to comply
with this policy may result in the revocation of eReader privileges. You and your child (student) are also solely
responsible for the use and location of this device at all times. The parish, school, principal, staff, faculty and other
students are NOT responsible for any device brought to the school.
PROMOTION AND RETENTION
The principal, teacher, and parent, will discuss all promotions and retentions. The final decision is based upon a total
evaluation of the student's growth in all areas of development. Specific criteria for retention are as follows:
1. The student has failed to pass the major subjects on his/her grade level.
2. The student has failed to achieve satisfactory scores on a standardized test in reading, mathematics, and language arts.
3. The student has not demonstrated acceptable effort in achieving academic success. The type of behavior that would
indicate unacceptable effort might be failure to complete school homework assignments and projects, consistent
inattention to classroom instruction, and lack of preparedness for school assignments. Parents will be notified in March if
there is a possibility of their child being retained.
The principal, after consultation with the parents and teacher(s) will have the right to make the final decision on
the placement of students.
PRINCIPAL’S AUTHORITY
In accordance with the school’s philosophy and values and in situations where policies and procedures have not been
established, the principal has the authority to determine and invoke actions or disciplinary consequences regarding
students, non-students and parents/guardians. The principal has the authority to: - 1. Amend, revise or change school
practices, procedures, regulations and other guidelines. Changes are communicated through written notices sent through
students and/or electronically, and verbal announcements, when applicable. 2. Determine what is appropriate behavior or
dress becoming a student or non-student. The principal is the final recourse in all matters of discipline and school related
matters and may waive any disciplinary rule for just cause at his/her discretion.
DISCIPLINE
Any behavior, which is viewed by the school administration as detrimental to the educational process, to the safety of
other persons, or to the reputation of Our Lady of the Snows School, could be considered grounds for serious disciplinary
action and may result in suspension or expulsion. The principal is the final recourse in all-disciplinary situations and may
waive any and all regulations for just cause at their discretion. Every student has a right to be in a calm learning
atmosphere and feel safe, secure, and happy in school.
Students will come into the building quietly and continue in good order on the stairs and in the halls. Once the bell has
been rung in the hall all students are expected to be silent. Failure to adhere to the above rules will result in detention.!
Students should report a bullying situation to the classroom teacher so that students exhibiting demeaning behaviors
receive immediate correction. The use of any electronic devices during school hours to text, cheat on a test or assignment,
or otherwise communicate with others will be grounds for suspension. Cheating on tests, forging a signature, etc. are
serious violations. A repeated serious infraction could result in suspension from school. Suspension will be given at the
discretion of the teacher and principal. Parents must meet with the principal before a student can be reinstated in school.
As a last resort after other means of motivation and correction have failed, a student may be expelled. If a student brings a
razor, box cutter, knife or sharp instrument to school s/he will be subject to expulsion.

RESPECT
Respect is a quality we aspire to and want to instill in our children. This continues to be our theme for this school year.
We believe as teachers and as parents we need to set good examples of mutual respect in school relationships both at
home and in school. We ask parents to make an appointment with your child's teacher if there is a problem or
disagreement. If a teacher's conference either by phone or in person does not offer resolution, a further meeting with the
parent, teacher and principal will take place.
