the concept of ‘green world’ has become significant in business and

industry, especially developing of products and production process that can save environment and expand the life of the earth. Department research and development of IRPC (Public) Co., Ltd., the company of PTT Group has, the first of the world, invented Green ABS plastic from natural tree rubber under the notion of “Green Concept” producing environmental friendly products with international standard quality.

Green ABS, which is plastic resins by using 4% para rubber as a raw material instead of synthetic rubber, is premium product that is invented to fulfill the needs of Hi-End customers who not only want to produce standard quality products, but also realize the importance of environmental friendly product and people’s quality of life. Its target group is the customers in car industry and appliance/electronics industry. Most of the customers are from Europe, the US and Japan.

Green ABS is one of five innovative items from product research and development of IRPC. The project is called “IRPC Styrenic Imagination World” as its establishment was aimed to produce environmental friendly production of plastic and Styrenic that are internationally standardized in order to respond to the various needs of customers who are in the rapidly changing economy, society and surrounding.

• พอลยรเทน (Polyurethane หรอ PU)จะใชโมเลกลของAlkylAmmoniumChlorideเปนสารตอตานจลนทรย โดยผลการทดลองพบวาสามารถตอตานเชอจลนทรยไดจรงโมเลกลเหลานสามารถผสมเขาเปนเนอเดยวกนกบพอลเมอร ในระหวางกระบวนการสงเคราะหไดผลจากการเตมสารตอตานจลนทรยชนดน ทำใหพอลเมอรแสดงคณสมบตการดดซมนำตำมความแขงแรงและมความสามารถในกระบวนการขนรปดเยยมอกทงสามารถกำจดแบคทเรยชนดGram-positiveไดทงนอปกรณทางการแพทยชนด PU ไดแกอปกรณทางการแพทยทมสวนประกอบของฉนวนกนความรอนหรอฉนวนไฟฟาเปนตน

• พอลคารบอเนต (Polycarbonate หรอ PC) ทางศนยวสดศาสตรของBayer(BayerMaterial Science) ไดพฒนาสารตอตานจลนทรยขน โดยใชอนภาคซลเวอรนาโน(NanoSilver) เปนสารเตมแตงในการควบคมการเจรญเตบโตของแบคทเรยบนพนผวพลาสตกเหลาน ซงสามารถยบยงแบคทเรยไดทงในกลม Gram-positiveเชน Bacillus, Listeria, StaphylococcusเปนตนและกลมGram-negativeเชนE-coli,Salmonellaเปนตนทงนอปกรณทางการแพทยทมกใสสารตอตานจลนทรยชนดน เชน อปกรณในระบบการขบถายปสสาวะและอปกรณภายในทใชในการวนจฉยโรคเปนตน นอกจากนนกวทยาศาสตรและวศวกรจากมหาวทยาลยMSU(MontanaStateUniversity) ไดคนพบวาการใชอนพนธสารประกอบของChitosan จากเปลอกของปและกง ดงรปท 3สามารถเปนสารตอตานจลนทรยได ในการ

ทดลองพบวาสารนสามารถปองกนการเกาะตวสะสมของแบคทเรยและยสตได ดงนนจงอาจจะนำไปพฒนาใชไดกบอปกรณทางการแพทย เชน ลนหวใจเทยมคอนแทคเลนสสะโพกและหวเขาเทยมหรอวสดอปกรณทเกยวกบการปองกนการตดเชอเปนตน ดงนนอาจกลาวไดวาอตสาหกรรมการผลตอปกรณทางการแพทยทใชวสดประเภทพลาสตกสามารถเตบโตไดอยางตอเนองตอไปเนองจากสามารถแกปญหาการตดเชอบนอปกรณไดซงถอวาสามารถตอบโจทยทตองการไดนอกจากนยงอาจจะนำไปสการพฒนาในอตสาหกรรมอนๆ ตอไปเชนอตสาหกรรมบรรจภณฑอาหารประเภทกลองหรอฟลมพลาสตกหากมใชสารตอตานเชอแบคทเรยเชนเตมสารNisinหรอChiorinedioxideเพอชวยยดอายอาหารใหเกบไดนานยงขนเปนตน

there are a variety of materials used to manufacture medical devices, i.e. metal,

plastic, rubber and etc. Above all, plastic seems to achieve greatest popularity for it is inexpensive, light-weighted, multicoloured, and non-toxic. Nevertheless, that some factors cause these materials to contaminate with microbes easily turns out to be their major drawback. The factors - including duration, using manners, or substantial components of the devices themselves – often increase the risk of infection, especially at surgical site, on artificial organs such as prosthetic joints and mechanical heart valves, or even at the inner contact lens. Such microbial accumulation on these devices, as shown in picture 1, is called the Biofilm formation. Therefore, it is essential to develop antimicrobial plastics in order to solve the mentioned problem.

Antimicrobial plastics can be synthesized by Self Assembling Monolayer End groups or SAMEs technology. This technology is

about surface modifying of plastic by atoms or molecules assembling on polymer chain. When adding some chemical substances into plastic, the atoms or molecules of these substances will assemble only one layer (Monolayer) at

the outermost surface of plastic, as shown in picture 2, in order to prevent the colonization of microorganism, such as bacteria, fungi and algae. Currently, selection of which atoms or molecules of antimicrobial agent to apply to SAMEs Technology depends on the kind of

plastic needed surface modifying. Here are some examples. • Polyurethane or PU can get along with the antimicrobial molecules of Alkyl Ammonium Chloride. An experiment found that they successfully prevented microorganism. These molecules can homogenized into polymer during its synthesis process. As a result of adding this antimicrobial agent found that, polymer exhibit low water absorption, excellent strength and processability, an ability

to destroy Gram-positive bacteria. PU medical devices include those with thermal insulator or

electric insulator. • In case of Polycarbonate or PC, the Bayer Material

Science centre has invented antimicrobial agent from Nano Silver particles which are adding agent that help control bacterial proliferation on plastic surface. It can restrain Gram-positive bacteria, i.e. Bacillus, Listeria, Staphylococcus, and Gram-negative ones, i.e. E-coli, Salmonella. Examples of medical devices that can apply to this antimicrobial agent include urinary system ones and internally diagnostic ones. In addition, scientists and engineers from Montana State University (MSU) also found out that derivative compound of Chitosan in crustaceans’ shells, as seen in picture 3, can function as an antimicrobial agent. With it, the colonization of bacteria and yeast is proved to be preventable. Thus, this may adaptable to other medical devices, i.e. mechanical heart valves, contact lens, artificial hips and knees, or those related with antiinfection. Briefly, that medical devices manufacturing industries which rely on materials like plastic keep growing continually is because of their problem solving ability to suppress an issue of infection. Besides, this may lead to an improvement in other industrial fields, such as plastic food packaging for storage container or wrapping film industry, for the use of antimicrobial agent, say, adding Nisin or Chiorine dioxide for longer food preservation.

past several years, oil price crisis and

currency fluctuations have already pushed the world economy to its rock bottom. Then it is no surprise for one to predict that the economy is recovering. Yet investment in offshore economies should be made carefully. The most interesting countries at present and in the future are those emerging economies, aka the Global Emerging Markets (GEMs).

The GEM consists of emerging economies in Asia (Emerging Asia), in Latin America (Emerging Latin), and in Eastern Europe (Emerging Eastern Europe). Compared to other economies in the world market, these economies are less afflicted by the crisis, more resilient, tougher, with higher economic growth ratio, as they reap from greater driving forces of domestic consumption and investment. Their beneficial factors also include the aggregate population of about 3,900 persons, international reserve of 2 trillion dollars in total, and overall GDP of approximately 8 trillion dollars.

As for Thailand, it is regarded one of te global emerging markets. Apart from being a strong exporter of rice, textiles and footwear, the country is rated by the Grant Thornton emerging markets opportunity index as offering 10th greatest level of opportunity to investors.

Although emerging markets have currently become investment optimism, Thai investors and entrepreneurs should bear in mind that a country with high expansion correspondingly carries a high possibility of inflation. As a result, investment in a single emerging economy with high growth is thus highly risky. To mitigate such risk, investing in a business or fund that diversifies its portfolio into different economies is recommended.

April to May 2010, WTI crude oil prices moved along the

range of USD 70-86 per barrel. At the end of May, the oil futures for July delivery closed at USD 74 per barrel, decreasing from the end of March by USD 6 per barrel. Oil prices were volatile and on downward trend, due to several negative demand factors, such as volcanic eruption in Iceland that spread ash clouds over neighboring countries’ airspace and grounded flights across Europe for over a week. These were added by the lack of confidence in the economy of the European Union (EU), especially the excessive public debt problems of PIIGS countries (Portugal, Italy, Ireland, Greece, and Spain), leading by Greece having the public debt exceeding 100% of its GDP. Although Greece economic size is not large to directly affect global economy, the fact that EU had to offer Greece a financial assistance-might pose a domino impacts to others EU countries that were not ready for the one policy issuing by EU. This included Spain, which is one of the first 15 world’s largest economies size with high public debt problem as well. All these factors undermined the economic stability of the EU in general and instigated the continuous depreciation of EURO currency since December 2009 to hit the lowest record in 4 years in May 2010. Although positive factors from various US economic indices suggested that the US economy is recovering, the EU economic slump had a more severe impact on the world market and tended become increasingly aggressive over the last two quarters of this year. This signified the world economic uncertainty, which might in turn cause decreasing-future crude oil demand. Despite positive supply factors from maintenance of several refineries in Europe and America at the beginning of the year, these refineries had resumed their operations in late. From the beginning of this year to ending of May, Naphtha supply were tight due to maintenance of refineries, while demands were high since Naphtha crackers had gained high cracker margin both from olefins and aromatics. However, Naphtha prices tended to fall owing to the pressure of the price of raw materials. At the end of May, Naphtha prices closed at USD 645 per ton, decreasing from the end of March by USD 86 per ton.

April to May 2010, Ethylene prices in Southeast Asia moved along the range of USD 1,025-1,250 per ton, and

closing price at the end of May was USD 1,025 per ton, decreasing by USD 135 per ton from the end of March. Meanwhile, HDPE prices in Southeast Asia during April to May 2010 were between USD 1,150-1,265 per ton, and closing price as of ending May was USD 1,150 per ton, decreasing by USD 80 per ton. The supply was tight due to shortage of raw materials that resulted from maintenance of refineries early this year, accompanied by intermittent production and frequent emergency shutdown of new crackers in the Middle East. Consequently, Ethylene prices were as high as those of HDPE. The situation coerced HDPE producers to reduce their HDPE operating rate because the raw material prices were too high, thereby causing a corresponding decrease in supply. However, as crude oil and Naphtha prices had dropped in consistent with elevated confidence in economic conditions, the resumption of oil refineries, along with the decreasing demand factors in industrial sector due to uncertain raw material prices, including higher inventory of traders; Ethylene and Polyethylene prices had plummeted by USD 80-135 per ton in only one month. Market conditions of Propylene and PP were negatively affected by demand and supply factors, just as Ethylene and Polyethylene markets were. However, given that PP market had been in tight conditions for

a longer period than PE’s, prices of PP in Southeast Asia during April to May 2010 were in the range of USD 1,265-1,390 per ton. As of ending May, PP price closed at USD 1,265 per ton, decreasing by approximately USD 55 per ton from the end of March. When compared to PP, Propylene prices that closed at USD 1,050 per ton had dropped considerably, which was by more than USD 120 per ton. The price situation of PS gained continual support from the rising Benzene prices, which had a healthy demand. Nevertheless, Benzene prices in May had declined in line with the oil prices, causing both GPPS and HIPS prices to decrease under pressure. Then again, PS demand by the manufacturing sector improved upon commencement of high production period. PS prices had thus not fallen drastically in accordance with Benzene and Styrene monomer, which were its raw materials. During April to May 2010, GPPS prices in Southeast Asia fluctuated between USD 1,345-1,445 per ton. The price at the end of May was USD 1,345 per ton, decreasing by approximately USD 65 per ton from the end of March.

Plastic Industry Club, the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI), and the President & CEO of PTT Chemical Plc., delivered a speech at the Asean Federation of Plastic Industries (AFPI) conference which brought together the business leaders from 7 ASEAN countries. The conference, which featured update on latest development, issues and happening on the plastics industry of Thailand, has regained ASEAN business leaders’ confidence over Thailand’s economy and concluded with Bangkok chosen to be the host of AFPI 2011. Mr. Veerasak Kositpaisal, Chairman of Plastic Industry Club of FTI, (2nd from right, middle row) and conference participants, attended the 13th annual AFPI conference on 20-21 May 2010 in Manila, Philippine, which is hosted by Philippine Plastics Industry Association.
