TOPDo Right to Do WellAs we continue to grow in size and complexity, it is important that we understand that the core values of Jebsen remain fundamental to the way we do business. The promise of our organisation is always the same over the past 120 years; we operate to maximize the opportunities in all of our businesses, but we do it in a compliant and transparent manner, taking responsibility for our actions. Acting with integrity means doing the right thing, even when no one is looking, and even if means forgoing some financial gain.

Success in Jebsen has many facets and reflecting on the work done in 2015 it is evident that is our environment of continuously striving to improve our businesses, trying to be better than the competition and satisfying the needs of our customers and consumers, that allows us move forward in each of our Business Units. Recently, we have seen some immediate fallout in all of our markets; yet, I am pleased to report that despite these continuing headwinds, we achieved improved operating results and a full-year turnover of HK$14.7 billion (RMB 12.4 billion).

Jebsen Consumer continues to invest in its omni-channel strategy, but at the same time is ensuring that we remain relevant to our key business partners in Hong Kong, by contributing exciting and profitable products to their sales outlets. In China our focus remains on building our retail presence with Dyson, Braun and Oral-B as we move from a department store centric model towards shopping malls. Looking forward we are confident that consumption power will remain reasonably strong in 2016.

In a similar fashion, Jebsen Industrial is adapting to the changing times. Its transformation from a distributor to a value adder in the B2B industry is being led by business-wide innovation. To complement its strong portfolio of cinematic and broadcasting solutions, Jebsen Industrial has established JCineCare Service Centre to provide unique technical services for the very complex lenses we sell. Its self-owned brand for the food industry, Weiwanjia, also continues to introduce innovative new products for the health-conscious consumer.

Under Jebsen Beverage’s leadership, Blue Girl Beer enjoyed its 10th year as the top beer brand in Hong Kong by volume and value in 2015. The brand also saw a 50% year-on-year growth in Southern and Eastern China. Being exclusive distributor for Anheuser-Busch InBev in Hong Kong and Macau, Jebsen Beer has opened up new market of draft beer to our portfolio, with over 1,200 draught beer taps installed throughout Hong Kong in 2015. Recently named "2015’s Best Wine Dealer" by Vinehoo.com, Jebsen Fine Wine is preparing to celebrate its 25th anniversary through a series of activities and a continued commitment to enriching its product offerings. Building on a quarter century of leadership, it has launched Jebsen Wine Estates, the

portfolio of our own wine brands from all major producing regions around the world.

Jebsen Motors, which celebrated sixty years of collaboration with Porsche last year, has always looked ahead—rapidly adapting to market changes to maintain its position as the industry benchmark of professionalism. In 2015, this included the continuous investment in facilities and people, optimising its sales and aftersales workforce, enhancing operational efficiency and exploring new opportunities in e-commerce

and social media to engage and connect with customers. The result was an 11% increase in the delivery of Porsche cars, but maybe more importantly,

our centers collectively rank highest in the nationwide ranking system of Porsche China including earning the top dealer position.

These are just examples of the work being performed every day throughout our organisation which underline our motto of ‘Success Breeds Success’. However, I believe the performance of our businesses has been possible not only because of our adaptability and innovation, but also because of our strong reputation and brand of being a

responsible organisation. I am confident that these values will continue to guide us towards a brighter, sustainable future for all.

Having proven Dyson’s popularity with Chinese department store shoppers, Jebsen Consumer continues to grow the brand’s presence in Mainland China with the opening of three unique Dyson stores in Hangzhou, Chengdu and Shanghai.

Hangzhou’s MixCity Shopping Mall is home to the world’s first Dyson concept store, which offers a bright, cheerful environment, attractive displays and a comprehensive range of Dyson products to deliver an enhanced shopping experience directly to China’s increasingly sophisticated consumers. The opening of the store on January 26, 2016 was officiated by Mr Carsten Brenker, Business Development Director of Jebsen Consumer and Ms Maggie Chung, Deputy General Manager of Jebsen Consumer (East China). The event was simple but momentous as it marks the next chapter in Jebsen Consumer’s marketing strategy for Dyson—to expand beyond department stores and into lifestyle retail malls.

At the same time, Jebsen Consumer has also brought the first Dyson concept shop-in-shop to Chengdu IFC mall and the first Dyson Beacon Store to Jiuguang Department Store in Shanghai.

What does 2016 hold for Blue Girl Beer?

Jebsen Fine Wines have been awarded the honour of ‘2015’s Best Wine Dealer’ by Vinehoo.com.

A series of Chinese New Year festivities of Blue Girl Beer were held across main cities in Greater China in February.

The year is set to be an exciting one for Blue Girl Beer and its fans as the brand celebrates its 110th anniversary and its 10th year of being Hong Kong’s number one beer! Blue Girl Beer began the year with a fun ‘mobile phones first’ social media initiative. Riding on the popularity of food snaps, the campaign invited fans to visit designated restaurants and upload onto Facebook or Instagram a mealtime photo of their dish with Blue Girl Beer. Participating fans stood to win HK$1,000 cash prizes. The brand also ushered in Chinese New Year with consumers in Hong Kong and Mainland China. In putting together its event calendar for the rest of the year, Blue Girl Beer may also be inspired by its fans’ WeChat ‘wishlist’—from exhilarating watersports and a Blue Girl Beer plane to rooftop parties and music concerts!

By listening to its consumers’ voice, Blue Girl Beer continued to beTaiwan’s top three imported beer and enjoyed a 50% year-on-year growth in southern and eastern China last year. In 2015, Jebsen Beer has also been appointed by Anheuser-Busch InBev to be the exclusive distributor in Hong Kong & Macau markets for nine of its international beer brands in Hong Kong and Macau. With this firm foundation, the business unit is looking forward to an exciting and rewarding 2016!

Jebsen Fine Wines is enjoying a great start to 2016, having been named "2015’s Best Wine Dealer" by Vinehoo.com. The wine e-commerce retailer based in China, which is also a popular online sharing portal for wine connoisseurs in the country, used a combination of consumer votes and grading by industry experts to determine the winners. This accolade is timely recognition of Jebsen Fine Wines’ 25-year market leadership in Greater China, which comes from its agility in responding to market changes and consumer trends. Most recently, in recognition of growing consumer interest in enjoying wine at home and in restaurants, Jebsen Fine Wines is growing its reach with the establishment of the Jebsen Wine Estates brand. Jebsen Industrial recommends scientifically proven marine collagen for glowing skin. Dry skin becomes a common problem for many people. To battle tightness and the appearance of fine lines, beauty experts often recommend the use of collagen supplements. While collagen is a naturally occurring protein in the human body, it is lost with time. By the age of 45, only 30% of collagen remains. Similar to replenishing calcium for strong bones, replacing lost collagen can be an essential step to stay youthful.

Working with Weishardt, a family-run French company, Jebsen Industrial has brought NatiCol®, a range of marine hydrolysed collagen that promotes anti-ageing, healthy joints, hair care and more, to China. Made from 100% natural marine collagen, NatiCol® features easy solubility, with neutral taste and smell and excellent clarity and colour. While it can be dissolved in

water and directly consumed, NatiCol® also offers great versatility in application—it can be used in oral beauty supplements, chewing gum, candy and even flavoured drinks.

Precision Positioning J ebsen Log i s t i c s once aga in demonstrated its industry capabilities with the successful completion of a hoisting and positioning job for an MTRC K-1667 car body shell on December 28, 2015.

Faced with a 7,000kg vehicle body that was over 20m long and 3m high, Jebsen Logistics had to define a strategy to move the unit without causing damage and complete this in three hours so as to minimise impact on the MTRC workshop and bus operations. With its experience and expertise, Jebsen Logistics chose to utilise two 30-tonne hydraulic mobile cranes with two sets of certified spreader beam and lifting gears. The team was also aware that positioning accuracy of the bogies and bolster installation was mission-critical. Jebsen Industrial now offers the advanced technology needed to produce carbon fibre composites—an increasingly important material for aircraft manufacturing. Compared to traditional aluminium, carbon fibre composites are 40% lighter but incredibly strong for their weight. Firm in its belief that the availability of next-generation materials like carbon fibre composites is a key growth driver for China’s aviation market, Jebsen Industrial is partnering Kroenert to bring advanced film coating and impregnating machines to the local market. This is essential in the production of carbon fibre prepregs, which, in turn, are needed to make composites. Kroenert from Germany has extensive experience in producing coating

The Jebsen Building Products team has been successfully showcasing the powerful performance of Deflecta concrete bacteria control to customers in China. The solution combats mould growth, which is an inherent problem in food and beverage manufacturing environments due to high humidity. Budweiser’s recently expanded greenfield brewery in the Foshan Sanshui district and the Heinz-Foodstar condiments plant in Shanghai’s Jinshan Industrial Zone have both benefited from Deflecta’s effectiveness.

Deflecta’s solution not only provides an effective and long lasting finishing to protect the wall and ceiling from mould and moisture ingress, it is also able to reduce the frequency of cleaning and maintenance cost of the plants in long run.

The brand behind premium brands Collaborated with Business Management Review (BMR), a leading business publication in Greater China, Jebsen Group organised a series of forums to the BMR Management Club and distilled insights on how it has built a strong brand for itself by helping countless premium brands find success in Greater China.

These values have allowed the Group to grow into a leading marketing and distribution organisation that is serving Greater China well.

Changing Times, Changing Needs “China is a very interesting country. This is truly where the only constant is change,” said Mr Helmuth Hennig, Group Managing Director. In his opinion, part of the Group’s success comes from its willingness and ability to embrace change. The Group has been agile in staying abreast with market conditions and consumer trends. What has not changed, however, is its commitment to China.

“One of the reasons why brands choose to partner with us is because we take a holistic view of the market. Our business partners understand that we have the capabilities to market them as part of a complete solution — not just a single brand or product. This is a very powerful way to enter and grow in China.”

“To achieve this, we have to invest in understanding each principal’s needs and strengths. We analyse this in market context in order to find the best way to match the two. A successful match creates a win-win situation for our principals, for Jebsen and for customers.”

He added, “All our brands — whether principal brands or in-house, self-owned ones — are specifically targeted at China’s rising middle class and the premium segment. This gives us focus and a very clear direction.” This focus is also apparent in the way the Group organises itself. Within each of its four strategic business units, the Group partners with anchor principals and their leading brands to establish its market leadership in different industries.

Jebsen Group’s core purpose is to enrich people’s lives by providing a choice of quality products and services. From over a century ago when it first brought BASF’s indigo dye to China, its 120-year journey was made possible by agility, innovation and resilience.

Jebsen Industrial: Moving up the value chain From the Group’s trading roots, Jebsen Industrial has blossomed into a fully-fledged business partner covering distribution, manufacturing, sales and marketing, business development and industrial services. It also stands out with self-owned brands.

“In the film & media industry, we launched the JCineCast brand in 2015 to offer a multi-brand and multi-channel experience directly to professional and prosumers in Asia,” shared Mr Maximilian von Stillfried, Managing Director of Jebsen Industrial. “We have also used our in-house expertise to develop self-owned brands like Weiwanjia for the health-conscious consumer.”

Jebsen Beverage: Brand experience is key In the premium beverage segment, Jebsen has also held its ground since it acquired Blue Girl Beer in 1906. The premium lager’s lasting appeal is something that Mr Michael Glover, Group Director and Managing Director of Jebsen Beverage, credits to its heritage.

“The beer and wine segment is actually quite traditional. New brewing techniques or technology aside, I believe that communicating our brand message is the most important,” he said. Mr Glover also believes that it is critical to understand consumers from every angle, for instance where people are consuming the beverage or where people are buying the beverage; so that the team can accurately deliver the brand experience to relevant consumer touch points at right time.

Jebsen Motors: Dealing exclusively with Porsche Jebsen is perhaps best known for introducing the first Porsche car to Hong Kong in 1955. In 2001, it brought the luxury German sports car brand to Mainland China as well. Today, Jebsen is one of the world’s largest Porsche dealer groups.

“From 40 cars a year to over 9,300 sold in 2015, our 60-year journey with Porsche has seen us grow from a car importer to a car dealer focus on providing premium services. Growing market demand in China calls for a strong service network and we will continue investing in expanding our network to support Porsche and Porsche enthusiasts in China and Hong Kong,” said Mr Alfons Mensdorff-Pouilly, Marketing & Business Development Director of Jebsen Motors.

Jebsen Consumer: Selling brands, not products“We do not sell products — we sell content and services,” said Mr Albert Chan, Managing Director of Jebsen Consumer. This innovative thinking has helped Jebsen Consumer evolve from just a distributor to an omni-channel, CRM-focused business. J Select, the Group’s multi-brand lifestyle retail brand is an excellent example of Jebsen Consumer’s online-to-offline strategy.

“With three physical stores in Hong Kong and a strong online presence at www.jselect.hk and China’s Tmall (jebsen.tmall.com), this self-owned brand demonstrates how Jebsen Consumer is expanding both upstream and downstream to better serve customers,” he said.

Giving back to the community Being entrenched in the communities it serves means Jebsen is also committed to giving back—often in creative ways.

“Life is Art is a programme that focuses on bringing art to the lives of the young. In Hong Kong and Shanghai, we are working with autistic children while in Beijing and Guangzhou, our focus is on migrant children. We are also deeply invested in Project Morning Star, a sight- saving mission with Orbis to deliver better eye-care to rural China. We encourage our staff to participate in our CSR activities and, by doing so, are engaging them on a different level. Every employee can take part in enriching other people’s lives through volunteerism,” shared Ms Bianca Wong, Group Human Resources & Corporate Communications Director.

Into a sustainable future As a mid-sized enterprise and a 120-year-old family business, Jebsen has always been prudent in its business decisions and will continue to do so. “Jebsen Group does not look only at today’s success. As a family business, we have to see beyond that. We strive to be an ever-green business, to leave a legacy for the next generation,” said Mr Hennig.

Jebsen Group, a pioneer and leader in corporate citizenry, has closed 2015 with as many as six industry accolades for its efforts in environmental conservation, philanthropy and staff well-being.

In July, it received the “Social Caring Organisation 2015” pledge by Social Enterprise Research Institute for outstanding commitment in enhancing social awareness of CSR among corporates and individuals. Human Resources magazine awarded the Group with an “Excellence in CSR Practices (Bronze)” as part of its HR Innovation Awards 2015 in October. It also received its third consecutive CarbonCare® Champion Label 2015 from Carbon Care Asia for continuing to invest in two climate friendly projects and purchasing 6,702.12 tonnes of carbon credit to achieve carbon neutrality yet again.

For clocking 2,882 volunteer hours in 2014/15, Jebsen received “The Hong Kong Volunteer Award (Corporate Award) 2015 – The Highest Participation Gold Award” from the Agency for Volunteer Service. Its Project Morning Star, in collaboration with ORBIS, was selected as “the Best Case of Innovative Public Benefit” in a 2015 CSR Case Competition organised by China Association of Enterprises with Foreign Investment (CAEFI) under the Ministry of Commerce and China WTO Tribune. Ending the year on a high note, Jebsen was also awarded the “Responsible Brand Award 2015” at the China Charity Festival, an influential annual event in the field of philanthropy in China.

These accolades serve to reinforce the Group’s commitment to CSR and to its sustainable development in Greater China.

Award-winning efforts

Jebsen Group received a series of CSR Awards and Recognition across the region in 2015.

In 2016, Jebsen Group will continue to pursue an active CSR strategy to make a positive impact on society and the environment.

When the five-year programme for Project Morning Star, a collaboration between the Group and Orbis that began in 2011, will conclude, the new next-generation Orbis Flying Eye Hospital will be in use and 800 more eye doctors and other medical professionals will have received training. To date, the Group has invested over RMB 5 million in Project Morning Star, with some RMB 3 million used to support project sites in Gansu, Heilongjiang, Guangdong and Yunnan. The project has already provided about 400,000 people in rural China with sight tests, treated 150,000 patients and conducted 12,000 eye surgeries for free. More than 100 Jebsen employees have also joined eight field trips to the project sites and witnessed the impact Orbis has made to the beneficiaries.

Doing good is a way of life

Jebsen’s Life is Art programme, launched in mid-2015 to create a brighter future for the young through art, has been successful in engaging volunteers to care for needy children. Through a series of volunteer events, more than 80 Jebsen employees brought art to 100 participating children.

In Beijing and Guangzhou, this came in the form of the Group’s Shutterbug Club activities where children from migrant families learnt the art of photography. This culminated in a charity photo exhibition and carnival in January in Guangzhou while the session for Beijing is expected to be held in May. In Hong Kong, Jebsen organised an Art Jamming Class in collaboration with Heep Hong Society. The children’s masterpieces were proudly exhibited at Park Central (January 9-10) and The Pacific Mall (January 23-24) in Hong Kong. Jebsen’s Shanghai staff partnered with Hands On Shanghai for a Djembe Drum Class, which led to the children putting on a show-stopping charity concert at Shanghai Wuliqiao Community Cultural Centre in January and cheerful performance at Jebsen’s Shanghai Annual Dinner on Feb 23.

Having touched the lives of so many children in such a meaningful way, Jebsen is excited to continue its Life is Art programme in 2016!

It is far from an easy task, especially when there are many misconceptions surrounding their work.

“Some auditees think that less is better when providing information to GIA. However, internal auditors are trained to look for red flags. If auditees are not completely open and transparent with us and inconsistencies are found, we will naturally take this as a red flag and probe deeper,” shared by Ms Cheng.

So while GIA needs to be an independent and objective function, Ms Cheng encourages her team to build trust-based relationships with their auditees. On one hand, this helps auditees feel more comfortable about raising potential concerns. It also helps GIA gain a better understanding of the strategies and risk factors of each business unit and function and give value adding recommendation.

“Cultivating an open and transparent culture is important on GIA’s journey — not just enforcing compliance, but also helping to solve the problems that matter most.”“However, to be able to deliver, GIA must also have the right resources. This starts with people. I regularly review my team’s skillsets, look for gaps and identify the best way to bridge these gaps, whether through additional training, new talent or co-sourcing,” shared Ms Cheng, “I believe that internal audit is a valuable function for the Group and its effectiveness can be maximised when management and GIA work in collaboration to achieve business alignment.”

Communicating the right values As Group Chairman, Mr Hans Michael Jebsen said, ‘integrity and decency are the pillars on which we stand’. As a result, in addition to the traditional assurance function, GIA is tasked to help promote the importance of ethics and compliance.

“GIA works with Group Legal to conduct legal compliance training for different business units, particularly when new laws and regulations are implemented, such as the Competition Ordinance in Hong Kong. We also collaborate with Group Human Resources to develop a practical and engaging Code of Conduct as well as corresponding training programme with case studies on ethical dilemmas that employee may encounter. This is aimed at providing actionable guidance to help our people navigate gray areas and understand the importance and advantages of compliant practices,” she said.

Jebsen Group has a Speaking Up policy that encourages people to report suspected illegal, unethical or inappropriate conduct via a confidential Malpractice Reporting Channel ([email protected]) which is monitored by Ms Cheng daily, and reports are directly made to the Board. All correspondence through the channel will be kept strictly confidential and information are reviewed independently to ensure objective investigation and protection to the whistleblowers.

As the first runner-up in the 30th Best Apprentice Competition organised by the Automobile Training Board under Hong Kong’s Vocational Training Council (VTC), Mr Marco Leung won himself not just a notable industry accolade, but also a rare opportunity to visit the Volkswagen plant in Shanghai—yet another valuable learning experience.

“I enjoy competitive running. Before each competition, I train hard, hoping to outdo my previous record, even by a little. It was with the same attitude that I represented Porsche Centre Hong Kong in the competition,” said Mr Leung.

Having joined Jebsen Motors as an Apprentice in November 2012, Mr Leung’s diligence won him a promotion to Body Technician by August 2015. He felt that the competition was a good opportunity to benchmark himself against industry peers after almost three years of growing and developing with Jebsen Motors.

“The competition was divided into two categories. I participated in the Vehicle Body Repair/Painting division. As I focus on body servicing and maintenance in my daily work, I realised that I was lacking in body painting skill. During lunchtime and after work, I proactively sought guidance from my body & paint colleagues. Everyone was very supportive and I am thankful for their generous help and advice,” shared by Mr Leung.

I believe dedicated service is the best way to continuously engage our customers, and sustain long-term relationships with both our partners and customers.

In the words of… Sai Choi Siu, Sales Manager, Jebsen Automotive Technik

“I joined Jebsen on February 1, 1989, so it has been 27 years. I have always been proud of being a Jebsen employee. I believe that when you are working in a team with Jebsen spirit, you will never think of leaving. My first role with Jebsen was as a Site Inspector, coordinating and supervising contractual works at the various housing sites where we supplied and installed Junkers and Hitachi gas appliances. I also had a role as Service Adviser, where I supported our technicians in servicing the equipment. I was later promoted to Sales Manager for Gas Appliances until 2006 when Junkers pulled out of the Asian market. Since then, my work has been focusing on automotive parts.

Many people have asked for my ‘secret to success’. My answer is simple: always work hard and strive for excellence.

Success Breeds Success

I believe dedicated service is the best way to continuously engage our customers, and sustain long-term relationships with both our partners and customers. So in February 2016, when I received a call from a customer who was having trouble with his Junkers gas water heater, which Jebsen no longer represents, I still felt that it was my duty to visit the customer and fix the problem, fully understanding the inconvenience of not having a gas water heater in the cold weather. I immediately went to the customer site within the day and helped him repair the gas water heater. I hope the customer will be satisfied with our service and continue to choose and trust Jebsen products and services.”

challenging construction projects in the country’s recent history.

Over 40,000 litres of paint were used to shop-paint 4,000 tonnes of steel, amounting to 21,900sqm of steel work. A three-coat paint system was applied to some areas with tricky steelwork designs. Prior to the application of coatings, however, a consistent blast profile and surface cleanliness are crucial to maximise the longevity of the corrosion protection.

“We selected GMA Garnet abrasive for this project as we are assured of its consistent high quality. The availability and consistent supply of garnet delivered to us has helped us manage our surface preparation works smoothly. Three hundred tonnes of GMA Premiumblast abrasives were used in this project and GMA was a reliable supplier from the beginning to the end,” said Mr Luke Wibberley of Ferro Clean.

The abrasive blasting company was among the first to recognise the value of GMA Garnet’s high-performance abrasive, converting from silica sand to GMA Garnet in 1970.
