At its September 29, 2010 meeting, the Wesley Urban Ministries Board of Directors received notice that Paul Johnson would be stepping down as Executive Director. His last day of work will be November 12, 2010. Paul will be taking on a new role with the City of Hamilton as the Director of Neighbourhood Development Strategies. In this role, Paul will spearhead the City’s efforts to support the evolution of neighbourhood development strategies. Through his work, Paul will develop and create strategic relationships with citizens and neighbourhood communities to better integrate systems and services to focus on the needs of citizens. Paul became Executive Director of Wesley Urban Ministries on March 20, 2000. During his tenure Paul helped shape an organization that truly responds to its mission to “decrease barriers, increase opportunities and be a model and catalyst for social transformation”. He dramatically increased the programming offered at Wesley Urban Ministries in order to better support those in need. Throughout the expansion, Paul also has been a champion of collaboration which has led to a stronger integration of services that often sees Wesley Urban Ministries delivering programs in partnership with many other community organizations. To respond to the needs of children, youth and families, Paul led the expansion of Wesley’s work with children and youth through the implementation of child care and early years services, after school programs, transitional housing for youth and outreach programs to connect vulnerable young people with services and supports. To respond to the needs of homeless men and women, Paul led the development of the innovative Claremont House Special Care Unit which provides health and housing supports to individuals requiring managed alcohol services. Most recently, Paul supported the City’s Shelter Blueprint by managing the closure of emergency shelter beds at Wesley Centre. “We are losing a tremendous leader who embodies the Vision, Mission and Values of Wesley Urban Ministries”, says John Durfey, Chair of the Board of Directors. “While we are sad to see Paul go, we are also excited that he will continue to help this community to move forward. His commitment to collaboration and to neighbourhood development will be valuable assets in his new role”. Recruitment for a new Executive Director will commence immediately.
